Abstract:Abstract Background The deformation of oral and maxillofacial region leads to not only the damage of morphology and function, but also a series of aesthetic and psychological problems, severely affecting the quality of life of patients. Oral tissue engineering refers to developing biomaterials for repair or regeneration, with the application of tissue engineering technologies. This has become an area of increasing prominence. Current biologically inert materials are insufficient to fulfill clinical requirements. Therefore, tissue-engineered biomaterials with bioactive, even bionic properties are desperately needed. Main body The complexity of the anatomy and the diversity of tissue types of oral and maxillofacial region pose great challenges to the regeneration, in the aspects of both biomaterials and manufacturing technologies. Biomaterials in clinical practice or research have evolved from natural materials to synthetic materials, from homogeneous materials to multiple composite materials. And now composite materials have increasingly demonstrated their advantages in terms of physicochemical and biological properties over conventional materials. In terms of manufacturing, traditional coating, sintering, and milling technologies can no longer satisfy the requirements for high-precision bionic structures of oral-tissue-engineering biomaterials. Scientists have turned to biofabrication technologies such as microfluidics and additive manufacturing. Short conclusion This review aims to summarize the noteworthy advancements made in biomaterials of oral tissue engineering. We outlined the current biomaterials and manufacturing technologies and focused on various applications of these materials that may be connected to clinical treatment and research. We also suggested the future direction of development for biomaterials in oral tissue engineering. In future, biomaterials characterized by precision, functionalization, and individualization will be manufactured through digital, microfluidic, and 3D printing technologies. Graphical abstract

Abstract:In the paper, we summarize the developmental process of biomedical materials, and put forward the development direction of bio-medical material in the future. Third-generation biomedical materials possess two properties: degradation and bioactivity, and it can help the body heal itself once implanted. Reproduction of tissue and organ in tissue engineering is a rapidly advancing filed that opens new and exciting opportunities of regenerative medicine and biomedical materials.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To analyze the progress in biological tissue engineering scaffold materials and the clinical application, as well as product development status.METHODS:Based on extensive investigation in the status of research and application of biological tissue engineering scaffold materials, a comprehensive analysis was made. Meanwhile, a detailed analysis of research and product development was presented.RESULTS:Considerable progress has been achieved in research, products transformation, clinical application, and supervision of biological scaffold for tissue engineering. New directions, new technology, and new products are constantly emerging. With the continuous progress of science and technology and continuous improvement of life sciences theory, the new direction and new focus still need to be continuously adjusted in order to meet the clinical needs.CONCLUSION:From the aspect of industrial transformation feasibility, acellular scaffolds and extracellular matrix are the most promising new growth of both research and product development in this field.

Abstract:Biomedical materials have received increasing attention in recent decades and have been used in medical applications to advance patient care, such as prosthetic implants, tissue repair and regeneration, drug delivery systems, pharmaceutical or biological therapy products, and sensitive diagnostic technologies. Among different types of biomedical materials, nonferrous metals and related materials (NMRMs) are important and attractive candidates. The updating of biomedical NMRMs and devices heavily relies on original research and application-oriented innovation. Here, we provide recent research findings and succinct insights into the developments in NMRMs for biomedical applications in China, including the use of titanium, magnesium, copper, zinc, cobalt, zirconium, hafnium, niobium, rhenium, tantalum, tungsten, silver, gold, platinum, palladium, their alloys and compounds, rare earths, high-entropy alloys, and liquid metals. Finally, the literature review concludes with several possible directions of NMRMs for new and future developments in biomedical engineering.Graphical abstract

Abstract:The interaction of biomaterials and tissues has been the focus of biomaterial science for many years and formed the foundation of the subject of biocompatibility. The research about biomaterials provides better basis for biomedical devices by the understanding of biocompatibility phenomena. In this paper, over 50 years of experience with such devices is analysed and it is shown that, in the vast majority of circumstances, the sole requirement for biocompatibility in a medical device intended for long-term contact with the tissues of the human body is that no harm should be brought to those tissues. Only a few bio-active biomaterials has been applied successfully in clinics. This artical gives a review on the application of biomaterials in tissue engineering,sophisticated cells, drug and gene delivery systems and in biotechnology. Interactions between biomaterials and tissue components is discussed as well.

Abstract:In recent years, China has made great progress in basic nanomedicine, nanotoxicology and nanobiology research. Nanotechnology has been continuously applied in biomaterial and medical device, more and more medical devices applying nanomaterials are developed and manufactured. In order to gain more comprehension and accurate understanding of the research and industrial development in nanobiomaterial medical devices, this study reviewed the common nanomaterial in medical devices and the regulatory situation of nanomaterial medical devices at home and abroad, and discussed the current challenges in biological evaluation of nanomaterial medical devices, with a view to providing ideas for the safety evaluation and research of related products.

Abstract:<p>In the field of biomaterials for healthcare applications, <i>Advanced Healthcare Materials</i> (AHM) has become one of the leading journals. Since 2011, AHM keeps bringing the latest research results in biomaterial science aimed at promoting human health. Nowadays, bibliometrics, of which methodological approaches can quantitively and qualitatively analyze the research performance of journals or subject fields, has attracted considerable attention among the scientific community. A general bibliometric overview of the research performance of AHM is presented. With the aid of Web of Science Core Collection database and VOSviewer software, the annual publication, the most prolific and influential authors/countries from AHM is identified. In addition, the most cited documents and keyword cooccurrence network analysis allow to recognize the major research topics in AHM. At last, the summary of current research trends based on AHM bibliometric analysis, several considerations for the clinical translation of biomaterials, and prospects to advance the field are also proposed. This editorial presents major research trends in the field of engineered materials for healthcare applications.</p>

Abstract:The surface design of biomedical materials is becoming more and more important in the fields of tissue engineering, biomedical devices, biosensing and detection, and biochips. In-depth understanding of the properties of materials, especially the surface properties, has a certain guiding role in the development of biomedical materials. Among various methods of surface modification based on biomaterials, photochemical modification is very simple and efficient, and has the advantages of spatiotemporal controllability and non-invasiveness. Based on this, in recent years, photochemical modification has become one of the hot research fields in the interface modification of biomaterials. This review first simply introduces the recent development of photochemical modification methods on biochemical surface, then mainly focuses on tissue regeneration materials (extracellular matrix biomimetic surfaces, stiffness-controllable hydrogel films, patterning and gradient surfaces, photo-responsive smart surfaces), 2D droplet microarrays surfaces, high-throughput biochip and other applications. Finally, this article points out the current shortcomings of photochemical surface modification and the future development trend of this field is also proposed.

Abstract:Titanium and titanium alloys have widely been used in biomedical applications as main substitutes for hard human tissues. To better meet the needs of safety, comfort, and durability of titanium and titanium alloys after implantation in the human body, the surface modification treatment of titanium and titanium alloys has become a research hotspot. In this review, based on the basic properties and existing problems of titanium and titanium alloys, the methods of surface modification for titanium and titanium alloys are introduced to improve their mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and bacteriostatic/antibacterial properties. Furthermore, the current challenges and prospects have been presented in this paper.

Abstract:▪ Abstract Since its inception just over a half century ago, the field of biomaterials has seen a consistent growth with a steady introduction of new ideas and productive branches. This review describes where we have been, the state of the art today, and where we might be in 10 or 20 years. Herein, we highlight some of the latest advancements in biomaterials that aim to control biological responses and ultimately heal. This new generation of biomaterials includes surface modification of materials to overcome nonspecific protein adsorption in vivo, precision immobilization of signaling groups on surfaces, development of synthetic materials with controlled properties for drug and cell carriers, biologically inspired materials that mimic natural processes, and design of sophisticated three-dimensional (3-D) architectures to produce well-defined patterns for diagnostics, e.g., biological microelectromechanical systems (bioMEMs), and tissue engineering.

Abstract:As a fundamental feature of solid surfaces, wettability is playing an increasingly important role in our daily life. Benefitting from the inspiration of biological paradigms and the development in manufacturing technology, numerous wettability materials with elaborately designed surface topology and chemical compositions have been fabricated. Based on these advances, wettability materials have found broad technological implications in various fields ranging from academy, industry, agriculture to biomedical engineering. Among them, the practical applications of wettability materials in biomedical-related fields are receiving remarkable researches during the past decades because of the increasing attention to healthcare. In this review, the research progress of materials with specific wettability is discussed. After briefly introducing the underlying mechanisms, the fabrication strategies of artificial materials with specific wettability are described. The emphasis is put on the application progress of wettability biomaterials in biomedical engineering. The prospects for the future trend of wettability materials are also presented.

Abstract:Abstract Nowadays, biomaterials have evolved from the inert supports or functional substitutes to the bioactive materials able to trigger or promote the regenerative potential of tissues. The interdisciplinary progress has broadened the definition of ‘biomaterials’, and a typical new insight is the concept of tissue induction biomaterials. The term ‘regenerative biomaterials’ and thus the contents of this article are relevant to yet beyond tissue induction biomaterials. This review summarizes the recent progress of medical materials including metals, ceramics, hydrogels, other polymers and bio-derived materials. As the application aspects are concerned, this article introduces regenerative biomaterials for bone and cartilage regeneration, cardiovascular repair, 3D bioprinting, wound healing and medical cosmetology. Cell-biomaterial interactions are highlighted. Since the global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019, the review particularly mentions biomaterials for public health emergency. In the last section, perspectives are suggested: (i) creation of new materials is the source of innovation; (ii) modification of existing materials is an effective strategy for performance improvement; (iii) biomaterial degradation and tissue regeneration are required to be harmonious with each other; (iv) host responses can significantly influence the clinical outcomes; (v) the long-term outcomes should be paid more attention to; (vi) the noninvasive approaches for monitoring in vivo dynamic evolution are required to be developed; (vii) public health emergencies call for more research and development of biomaterials; and (viii) clinical translation needs to be pushed forward in a full-chain way. In the future, more new insights are expected to be shed into the brilliant field—regenerative biomaterials.
