Abstract:Biomedical polymers have been extensively developed for promising applications in a lot of biomedical fields, such as therapeutic medicine delivery, disease detection and diagnosis, biosensing, regenerative medicine, and disease treatment. In this review, we summarize the most recent advances in the synthesis and application of biomedical polymers, and discuss the comprehensive understanding of their property-function relationship for corresponding biomedical applications. In particular, a few burgeoning bioactive polymers, such as peptide/biomembrane/microorganism/cell-based biomedical polymers, are also introduced and highlighted as the emerging biomaterials for cancer precision therapy. Furthermore, the foreseeable challenges and outlook of the development of more efficient, healthier and safer biomedical polymers are discussed. We wish this systemic and comprehensive review on highlighting frontier progress of biomedical polymers could inspire and promote new breakthrough in fundamental research and clinical translation.

Abstract:Biomedical polymers play a key role in preventing, diagnosing, and treating diseases, showcasing a wide range of applications. Their unique advantages, such as rich source, good biocompatibility, and excellent modifiability, make them ideal biomaterials for drug delivery, biomedical imaging, and tissue engineering. However, conventional biomedical polymers suffer from poor degradation in vivo, increasing the risks of bioaccumulation and potential toxicity. To address these issues, degradable biomedical polymers can serve as an alternative strategy in biomedicine. Degradable biomedical polymers can efficiently relieve bioaccumulation in vivo and effectively reduce patient burden in disease management. This review comprehensively introduces the classification and properties of biomedical polymers and the recent research progress of degradable biomedical polymers in various diseases. Through an in-depth analysis of their classification, properties, and applications, we aim to provide strong guidance for promoting basic research and clinical translation of degradable biomedical polymers.

Abstract:Utilization of polymers as biomaterials has greatly impacted the advancement of modern medicine. Specifically, polymeric biomaterials that are biodegradable provide the significant advantage of being able to be broken down and removed after they have served their function. Applications are wide ranging with degradable polymers being used clinically as surgical sutures and implants. In order to fit functional demand, materials with desired physical, chemical, biological, biomechanical and degradation properties must be selected. Fortunately, a wide range of natural and synthetic degradable polymers has been investigated for biomedical applications with novel materials constantly being developed to meet new challenges. This review summarizes the most recent advances in the field over the past 4 years, specifically highlighting new and interesting discoveries in tissue engineering and drug delivery applications.

Abstract:The interface between material science and ophthalmic medicine is witnessing significant advances with the introduction of biopolymers in medical device fabrication. This review discusses the impact of biopolymers on the development of ophthalmic devices, such as intraocular lenses, stents, and various prosthetics. Biopolymers are emerging as superior alternatives due to their biocompatibility, mechanical robustness, and biodegradability, presenting an advance over traditional materials with respect to patient comfort and environmental considerations. We explore the spectrum of biopolymers used in ophthalmic devices and evaluate their physical properties, compatibility with biological tissues, and clinical performances. Specific applications in oculoplastic and orbital surgeries, hydrogel applications in ocular therapeutics, and polymeric drug delivery systems for a range of ophthalmic conditions were reviewed. We also anticipate future directions and identify challenges in the field, advocating for a collaborative approach between material science and ophthalmic practice to foster innovative, patient-focused treatments. This synthesis aims to reinforce the potential of biopolymers to improve ophthalmic device technology and enhance clinical outcomes.

Abstract:Application of PAMAM functional biomedical materials in the field of biomedicine. Over the past decade, significant advancements have been achieved in the field of biomedicine, particularly in the treatment of critical illness. However, there remain numerous challenges and barriers persist in drug delivery, medical imaging, diagnosis, and treatment. Poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers have emerged as promising candidates for the development of functional biomedical materials due to their advantageous properties, including ease of preparation, controllable size, abundant cavities, water solubility, modifiability, and biocompatibility. This article presents a comprehensive review of the synthesis, application, and potential toxicity of PAMAM functional biomedical materials, exploring the role, significance, and potential applications of PAMAM dendrimers in detail. The aim is to provide a valuable reference for the future development of biomedical materials and to inspire further discoveries in the field of polyamide functional materials.

Abstract:To adapt to the changes in nature, living systems adjust their structure and function according to the environmental conditions. Scientists are inspired by nature and try to create materials that can change their behavior depending on the situation, just like living organisms do to survive. The idea of intelligent materials comes from natural biological systems, which follow a mechanism of sensing, reacting, and learning. Smart polymers, also known as stimuli-responsive, are a group of materials that possess the ability to respond to specific stimuli by undergoing reversible changes in their properties. Smart polymers have amazing features that come from their flexibility and responsiveness. They can change their molecular structure and function to suit different external stimuli or environmental changes. These materials are like living systems that adapt to their surroundings. Smart polymers have unique and highly desirable properties that make them attractive for a wide range of applications in medicine. This article reviews provides a comprehensive review of the recent advances in smart functional polymers, exploring their responses to various stimuli, be it physical, chemical, or biological. It also discusses some of the most advanced medical applications of these polymers, showcasing their transformative potential as materials that dynamically adjust to their environment.
Opportunities and challenges for the development of polymer-based biomaterials and medical devices

Abstract:Biomaterials and medical devices are broadly used in the diagnosis, treatment, repair, replacement or enhancing functions of human tissues or organs. Although the living conditions of human beings have been steadily improved in most parts of the world, the incidence of major human's diseases is still rapidly growing mainly because of the growth and aging of population. The compound annual growth rate of biomaterials and medical devices is projected to maintain around 10% in the next 10 years; and the global market sale of biomaterials and medical devices is estimated to reach $400 billion in 2020. In particular, the annual consumption of polymeric biomaterials is tremendous, more than 8000 kilotons. The compound annual growth rate of polymeric biomaterials and medical devices will be up to 15-30%. As a result, it is critical to address some widespread concerns that are associated with the biosafety of the polymer-based biomaterials and medical devices. Our group has been actively worked in this direction for the past two decades. In this review, some key research results will be highlighted.

Abstract:Degradable polymers (both biomacromolecules and several synthetic polymers) for biomedical applications have been promising very much in the recent past due to their low cost, biocompatibility, flexibility, and minimal side effects. Here, we present an overview with updated information on natural and synthetic degradable polymers where a brief account on different polysaccharides, proteins, and synthetic polymers viz. polyesters/polyamino acids/polyanhydrides/polyphosphazenes/polyurethanes relevant to biomedical applications has been provided. The various approaches for the transformation of these polymers by physical/chemical means viz. cross-linking, as polyblends, nanocomposites/hybrid composites, interpenetrating complexes, interpolymer/polyion complexes, functionalization, polymer conjugates, and block and graft copolymers, are described. The degradation mechanism, drug loading profiles, and toxicological aspects of polymeric nanoparticles formed are also defined. Biomedical applications of these degradable polymer-based biomaterials in and as wound dressing/healing, biosensors, drug delivery systems, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine, etc., are highlighted. In addition, the use of such nano systems to solve current drug delivery problems is briefly reviewed.

Abstract:The latest progress in shape-memory polymer for biomedical engineering applications was summarized in this paper. The mechanism responsible for shape memory effect was analyzed in reference to the polymer structure. Also introduced and reviewed were the characteristics of some shape-memory polymers (polyurethane polycaprolactone and polylactide) and their applications in medical engineering.

Abstract:Polyurethanes (PU) have properties that make them promising in biomedical applications. PU is recognized as one of the main families of blood and biocompatible materials. PU plays a vital role in the design of medical devices in various medical fields. The structure of PU contains two segments: soft and hard. Its elastomeric feature is due to its soft segment, and its excellent and high mechanical property is because of its hard segment. It is possible to achieve specific desirable and targeted properties by changing the soft and hard chemical structures and the ratio between them. The many properties of PU each draw the attention of different medical fields. This work reviews PU highlighted properties, such as biodegradability, biostability, shape memory, and improved antibacterial activity. Also, because PU has a variety of applications, this review restricts its focus to PU's prominent applications in tissue engineering (TE), cardiovascular medicine, drug delivery, and wound healing. In addition, it contains a brief review of PU's applications in biosensors and oral administration.

Abstract:Advances in regenerative medicine and in modern biomedical therapies are fast evolving and set goals causing an upheaval in the field of materials science. This review discusses recent developments involving the use of biopolymers as smart materials, in terms of material properties and stimulus-responsive behavior, in the presence of environmental physico-chemical changes. An overview on the transformations that can be triggered in natural-based polymeric systems (sol–gel transition, polymer relaxation, cross-linking, and swelling) is presented, with specific focus on the benefits these materials can provide in biomedical applications.

Abstract:Synthetic biodegradable elastomers, such as polyesters and polyurethanes have revolutionized biomedical therapeutic strategies and devices. Driven by innovations in chemical synthesis and processing technologies, a series of biodegradable elastomers and corresponding devices with controllable properties and various functionalities have been developed. In this review, we have summarized the recent progress in synthesis, process technologies, and biomedical applications of biodegradable elastomers. Particular emphasis is on the molecular design for biodegradability, elasticity, and the newly developed functionalities including self-healing, antibacterial, fluorescence, and shape-memory of biodegradable polyesters and polyurethane as well as their corresponding processing strategies. Subsequently, the recent progress of biodegradable elastomers in different biomedical applications is reviewed. A comprehensive conclusion and outlook pointing out emerging research directions, future challenges and potential solutions complete this work.

Abstract:In this review article, we focus on the various types of materials used in biomedical implantable devices, including the polymeric materials used as substrates and for the packaging of such devices. Polymeric materials are used because of the ease of fabrication, flexibility, and their biocompatible nature as well as their wide range of mechanical, electrical, chemical, and thermal behaviors when combined with different materials as composites. Biocompatible and biostable polymers are extensively used to package implanted devices, with the main criteria that include gas permeability and water permeability of the packaging polymer to protect the electronic circuit of the device from moisture and ions inside the human body. Polymeric materials must also have considerable tensile strength and should be able to contain the device over the envisioned lifetime of the implant. For substrates, structural properties and, at times, electrical properties would be of greater concern. Section 1 gives an introduction of some medical devices and implants along with the material requirements and properties needed. Different synthetic polymeric materials such as polyvinylidene fluoride, polyethylene, polypropylene, polydimethylsiloxane, parylene, polyamide, polytetrafluoroethylene, poly(methyl methacrylate), polyimide, and polyurethane have been examined, and liquid crystalline polymers and nanocomposites have been evaluated as biomaterials that are suitable for biomedical packaging (section 2). A summary and glimpse of the future trend in this area has also been given (section 3). Materials and information used in this manuscript are adapted from papers published between 2010 and 2015 representing the most updated information available on each material.

Abstract:Biodegradable and biocompatible biomaterials have offered much more opportunities from an engineering standpoint for treating diseases and maintaining health. Poly(ester amide)s (PEAs), as an outstanding family among such biomaterials, have risen overwhelmingly in the past decades. These synthetic polymers have easily and widely available raw materials and a diversity of synthetic approaches, which have attracted considerable attention. More importantly, combining the superiorities of polyamides and polyesters, PEAs have emerged with better functions. They could have improved biodegradability, biocompatibility, and cell-material interactions. The PEAs derived from α-amino acids even allow the introduction of pendant sites for further modification or functionalization. Meanwhile, it is gradually recognized that the chemical structures are closely related to the physiochemical and biological properties of PEAs so that their properties can be precisely controlled. PEAs therefore become significant materials in the biomedical fields. This review will attempt to summarize the recent progress in the development of PEAs with respect to the preparation materials and methods, structure-property relationships along with their latest biomedical accomplishments, especially for drug delivery and tissue engineering.

Abstract:Recent decades have seen great advancements in medical research into materials, both natural and synthetic, that facilitate the repair and regeneration of compromised tissues through the delivery and support of cells and/or biomolecules. Biocompatible polymeric materials have become the most heavily investigated materials used for such purposes. Naturally‐occurring and synthetic polymers, including their various composites and blends, have been successful in a range of medical applications, proving to be particularly suitable for tissue engineering (TE) approaches. The increasing advances in polymeric biomaterial research combined with the developments in manufacturing techniques have expanded capabilities in tissue engineering and other medical applications of these materials. This review will present an overview of the major classes of polymeric biomaterials, highlight their key properties, advantages, limitations and discuss their applications. © 2014 Society of Chemical Industry

Abstract:Biomaterials that interface with biological systems are used to deliver drugs safely and efficiently; to prevent, detect, and treat disease; to assist the body as it heals; and to engineer functional tissues outside of the body for organ replacement. The field has evolved beyond selecting materials that were originally designed for other applications with a primary focus on properties that enabled restoration of function and mitigation of acute pathology. Biomaterials are now designed rationally with controlled structure and dynamic functionality to integrate with biological complexity and perform tailored, high-level functions in the body. The transition has been from permissive to promoting biomaterials that are no longer bioinert but bioactive. This perspective surveys recent developments in the field of polymeric and soft biomaterials with a specific emphasis on advances in nano- to macroscale control, static to dynamic functionality, and biocomplex materials.

Abstract:With the growing importance of optical techniques in medical diagnosis and treatment, there exists a pressing need to develop and optimize materials platform for biophotonic applications. Particularly, the design of biocompatible and biodegradable materials with desired optical, mechanical, chemical, and biological properties is required to enable clinically relevant biophotonic devices for translating in vitro optical techniques into in situ and in vivo use. This technological trend propels the development of natural and synthetic polymeric biomaterials to replace traditional brittle, nondegradable silica glass based optical materials. In this review, we present an overview of the advances in polymeric optical material development, optical device design and fabrication techniques, and the accompanying applications to imaging, sensing and phototherapy.
