Abstract:Biomedical materials have received increasing attention in recent decades and have been used in medical applications to advance patient care, such as prosthetic implants, tissue repair and regeneration, drug delivery systems, pharmaceutical or biological therapy products, and sensitive diagnostic technologies. Among different types of biomedical materials, nonferrous metals and related materials (NMRMs) are important and attractive candidates. The updating of biomedical NMRMs and devices heavily relies on original research and application-oriented innovation. Here, we provide recent research findings and succinct insights into the developments in NMRMs for biomedical applications in China, including the use of titanium, magnesium, copper, zinc, cobalt, zirconium, hafnium, niobium, rhenium, tantalum, tungsten, silver, gold, platinum, palladium, their alloys and compounds, rare earths, high-entropy alloys, and liquid metals. Finally, the literature review concludes with several possible directions of NMRMs for new and future developments in biomedical engineering.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Nanocrystalline (NC) metallic materials have better mechanical properties, corrosion behavior and biocompatibility compared with their coarse-grained (CG) counterparts. Recently, nanocrystalline metallic materials are receiving increasing attention for biomedical applications. In this review, we have summarized the mechanical properties, corrosion behavior, biocompatibility, and clinical applications of different types of NC metallic materials. Nanocrystalline materials, such as Ti and Ti alloys, shape memory alloys (SMAs), stainless steels (SS), and biodegradable Fe and Mg alloys prepared by high-pressure torsion, equiangular extrusion techniques, etc., have better mechanical properties, superior corrosion resistance and biocompatibility properties due to their special nanostructures. Moreover, future research directions of NC metallic materials are elaborated. This review can provide guidance and reference for future research on nanocrystalline metallic materials for biomedical applications.

Abstract:Entering 21st century, the metallic biomaterials are revolutionizing. New kinds of metallic biomaterials represented by biodegradable metals, nacocrystalline metals and alloys, and bulk metallic glasses, had been explored as implantable biomaterials, and correspondingly the nature of metallic biomaterials are shifting from the bio-inert (with stainless steel, Co-based alloys and Ti alloys) to bio-active and multi-biofunctional (anti-bacterial, anti-proliferation, anti-cancer, etc.). The newly-emerging 3D printing technology and thin film technology had been applied to the advancing manufacture and intelligence of the medical devices made of metallic biomaterials. In this paper, the current research status of the revolutionizing metallic biomaterials had been reviewed, and the future research and development tendencies for newly-developed metallic biomaterials towards bio-functionalization, composite and intelligence are also proposed.

Abstract:In the paper, we summarize the developmental process of biomedical materials, and put forward the development direction of bio-medical material in the future. Third-generation biomedical materials possess two properties: degradation and bioactivity, and it can help the body heal itself once implanted. Reproduction of tissue and organ in tissue engineering is a rapidly advancing filed that opens new and exciting opportunities of regenerative medicine and biomedical materials.

Abstract:The biodegradable metals have great potential for the biomedical applications, which could be gradually degraded, absorbed, or excreted in the human body, avoiding the removal though secondary surgery. Zinc-based alloys are novel series of degradable metals for medical applications, and they are gaining lots of attention in the research field of absorbable metals. Zinc-silver (Zn-Ag) alloys show superior mechanical strength, good biodegradability, biocompatibility, and antibacterial properties, which render them to be potential candidates for biomedical applications. In this paper, we reviewed the development of Zn-Ag alloys in terms of mechanical properties, degradabilities, biocompatibilities, antibacterial properties, and potential applications in dentistry.

Abstract:During the last two decades, a great amount of researches have been focused on biodegradable metals. Technologies from alloy design to melting, manufacturing and processing, from microtube to stent laser processing and drug eluting coating have been improved and optimized continuously. Biodegradable metallic stent has evolved from a concept to a real product and generated three branches of material system. A large amount of animal tests and clinical tests have been carried out to investigate biodegradable magnesium stents. Results of clinical study have indicated that the magnesium stent is feasible, with favourable safety and performance outcomes. More importantly, Biotronik won CE Mark for Magmaris bioresorbable stent in 2016. Researches of biodegradable iron stents are still in the stage of animal tests. The nitrided iron stent possesses excellent mechanical properties. Results showed a good long-term biocompatibility of nitrided iron stent in rabbit and porcine model. Biodegradable zinc stent has only been introduced in recent years. Only a few in vivo studies have been reported with zinc wires implanted in rats. Results showed a good degradation behavior and biocompatibility of zinc wires. In this paper, the current research status of biodegradable metallic stents is reviewed, and the future research and development in mechanical property optimization, drug eluting and intelligence is proposed.

Abstract:Defects, defects and dysfunctions caused by disease, surgery or aging are among the most important threats to human health. Although organ transplantation and surgical reconstruction rehabilitation treatment measures have saved or prolonged a small number of lives, they still have shortcomings and limitations. Biomedical polymer materials have great potential in bone tissue engineering, and with the progress of material science, molecular biology, medicine and other fields, their application in bone tissue engineering is becoming more and more extensive. This paper introduces the types and polymer properties of biomedical polymer materials in bone tissue engineering, and introduces and prospects the current development of biomedical polymer materials in the field of bone tissue engineering.

Abstract:Highlights • Mg alloy stent should target for thinner struct thickness meanwhile with enough radial supporting strength. • Fe based stent should move to high efficient absorption, conversion, metabolism, elimination of its degradation products. • Zn alloy stent should strive to improve mechanical stability, creep resistance and biocompatibility. • Future R&D directions of metallic BRS should move towards new materials, smart stent, and multiple biofunctions. In contrast to polymer bioresorbable stents (BRS) that exhibited suboptimal performance in clinical trials due to their deficient mechanical properties, metallic BRS with improved mechanical strength have made their way into the clinic and have demonstrated more promising results. In the roadmap of research and development of metallic BRS, magnesium and iron based biodegradable metal stents had been clinically used, and the zinc based biodegradable metal stents had been trailed in Mini-Pigs. In this mini-review paper, we demonstrate the current technology levels and point out the future R&D direction of metallic BRS. Magnesium based BRS should target for decreasing struct thickness meanwhile balancing with enough supporting strength. Iron based BRS should move towards high efficient absorption, conversion, metabolism, elimination of its degradation products. Zn based BRS should strive to improve mechanical stability, creep resistance and biocompatibility. Future R&D directions of metallic BRS should move towards new materials such as Molybdenum, intelligent stent integrated with degradable biosensors, and new stent with multiple biofunctions, such as NO release. Abstract:Many materials are used in the field of medicine and dentistry. In this section, current metallic, ceramic, and polymer materials in medicine and problems of them are explained and future materials to solve the problems are prospected. A hard biomaterial is defined first against soft biomaterial and the necessity of biosis–abiosis intelligent interface between hard materials and living tissue is demonstrated. Tissue compatibility of titanium and surface treatment for hard tissue compatibility including its current problems, basis of materials research sometimes left behind, and hard materials for regenerative medicine, are discussed. In addition, medical use of metals, ceramics, and polymers are finally explained.

Abstract:Bacterial infection caused by biomaterials is a very serious problem in the clinical treatment of implants. The emergence of antibiotic resistance has prompted other antibacterial agents to replace traditional antibiotics. Silver is rapidly developing as an antibacterial candidate material to inhibit bone infections due to its significant advantages such as high antibacterial timeliness, high antibacterial efficiency, and less susceptibility to bacterial resistance. However, silver has strong cytotoxicity, which can cause inflammatory reactions and oxidative stress, thereby destroying tissue regeneration, making the application of silver‐containing biomaterials extremely challenging. In this paper, the application of silver in biomaterials is reviewed, focusing on the following three issues: 1) how to ensure the excellent antibacterial properties of silver, and not easy to cause bacterial resistance; 2) how to choose the appropriate method to combine silver with biomaterials; 3) how to make silver‐containing biomaterials in hard tissue implants have further research. Following a brief introduction, the discussion focuses on the application of silver‐containing biomaterials, with an emphasis on the effects of silver on the physicochemical properties, structural properties and biological properties of biomaterials. Finally, the review concludes with the authors' perspectives on the challenges and future directions of silver in commercialization and in‐depth research. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Presently, special metallic materials (titanium and a number of its alloys, stainless steels, magnesium alloys, etc.) are extensively used for the manufacturing of many medical tools and devices and choosing the appropriate material is of vital importance as it determines the success and safety of the medical devices for their application. Recent years witnessed active research and development to improve the mechanical and functional properties of these biomaterials using their nanostructuring by means of severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques. The specific nanostructural features induced by SPD processing in metallic biomaterials significantly contribute to their performance, which has been evidenced in a series of investigative activities conducted lately to improve existing metallic biomaterials and explore potential for their production capability. This paper presents a review of these works and considers the scientific principles of achieving a higher level of properties in the metallic biomaterials as well as related challenges and uncertainties, which forms the basis for the production of a new generation of medical implants with improved design and increased biofunctionality.

Abstract:Medical magnetic nanomaterials refer to magnetic nanomaterials owning specific biological effects and therapeutic functions which are promising in clinical medicine. A good case in this point is the iron-based magnetic nanomaterials. As the only inorganic nanomaterials approved by FDA for clinical use, iron oxide nanoparticles play a vital role in fundamental research and clinical application of nanomedicine. This feature article mainly focused on the state-of-art of iron oxide nanoparticles on the basis of our own works. The following sections were included in this feature article: Preparation and magnetic property, biological effects, assembly and future development, which was intended to clarify the particularity, importance and complexity of magnetic nanomaterials applied in clinical medicine. Although thermal decomposition method can get iron oxide nanocrystals with better morphology, coprecipitation method is more suitable for the use in clinic. This issue will be emphasized. Superparamagnetism is a prominent advantage of magnetic nanomaterials for medical applications, which is closely related to their size and morphology. The biological effects of iron oxide nanoparticles are versatile and can be regulated by chemical composition, morphology and surface modification. In recent years, some new biological effects of iron oxide nanoparticles still have been found, such as the enzymatic effect. Another outstanding property of magnetic nanomaterials is that the collective property can be regulated by control of assembled structures and interactions between the nanoparticles without changing the property of monomers. Here, the magnetic field-controlled assembly of magnetic nanoparticles and the property regulation will be discussed in detail. In the future, we should firstly further investigate the synthesis of medical magnetic nanomaterials of high performance and expand the clinical applicability. Certainly, the new clinical nanodrugs should be developed. Then, the biological effects of magnetic nanomaterials in the presence of magnetic field should be explored deeply, from which we may discover some new paradigms for the clinic. Finally, the novel characterization techniques and strategies for diagnosis and treatment should be developed. We believe the magnetic nanomaterials will make the society more glorious.

Abstract:In recent years, zinc alloys have shown great potential as orthopedic plant materials because of their excellent biocompatibility, osteoinductive and biodegradation activities in vivo. The physiological function, degradation rate and mechanical properties of pure zinc were introduced in this review. Taking the gap between the above indicators and the clinical needs of orthopedics as the clue and the alloy elements as the classification basis, the existing achievements of researchers to improve the properties of zinc-based materials by changing the microstructure of materials and triggering the corresponding strengthening mechanism, and using the physiological synergistic function of added elements were expounded in this paper. The standard formulation, alloy design improvement and the introduction of new technologies such as additive manufacturing in the field of medical zinc based materials were discussed in order to meet the diversified needs of clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract:Because of the excellent mechanical properties , biocompatibility and reasonable prices , biomedical metallic materials are widely used in the manufacture of vascular stents , heart valve membrane , artificial joints and other body implants . However , the physiological environment in the body is very complex , the long-term embedding of the metal implants may result in corrosion or some nonspecific effects . The properties of medical metal surfaces may decay , which can cause serious injury to human body . By means of the self-assembled monolayer ( SAM ) technology , the physical and chemical properties of the medical metal surfaces can be modified , and through the SAM medium , some functional materials can be grafted on the metal surfaces , which can largely improve the stability and compatibility of implants in the body , and find wide applications in promoting cell adhesion , improving hemocompatibility , inhibiting bacteria growth , and constructing drug delivery coatings . This paper reviews the progress in the application of SAM in biomedical metallic materials.

Abstract:Functional gradient materials (FGMs), as a modern group of materials, can provide multiple functions and are able to well mimic the hierarchical and gradient structure of natural systems. Because biomedical implants usually substitute the bone tissues and bone is an organic, natural FGM material, it seems quite reasonable to use the FGM concept in these applications. These FGMs have numerous advantages, including the ability to tailor the desired mechanical and biological response by producing various gradations, such as composition, porosity, and size; mitigating some limitations, such as stress-shielding effects; improving osseointegration; and enhancing electrochemical behavior and wear resistance. Although these are beneficial aspects, there is still a notable lack of comprehensive guidelines and standards. This paper aims to comprehensively review the current scenery of FGM metallic materials in the biomedical field, specifically its dental and orthopedic applications. It also introduces various processing methods, especially additive manufacturing methods that have a substantial impact on FGM production, mentioning its prospects and how FGMs can change the direction of both industry and biomedicine. Any improvement in FGM knowledge and technology can lead to big steps toward its industrialization and most notably for much better implant designs with more biocompatibility and similarity to natural tissues that enhance the quality of life for human beings.

Abstract:Titanium and titanium alloys have widely been used in biomedical applications as main substitutes for hard human tissues. To better meet the needs of safety, comfort, and durability of titanium and titanium alloys after implantation in the human body, the surface modification treatment of titanium and titanium alloys has become a research hotspot. In this review, based on the basic properties and existing problems of titanium and titanium alloys, the methods of surface modification for titanium and titanium alloys are introduced to improve their mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and bacteriostatic/antibacterial properties. Furthermore, the current challenges and prospects have been presented in this paper.

Abstract:Bulk metallic glasses have unique properties including high strength,high hardness,high wear-corrosion resistance,high fatigue resistance,low elastic modulus,ect.,which are different from crystalline alloy's.When they are used as structural materials in a large scale,people recognize the importance and feasibility of biomedi-cal research on bulk metallic glasses.Based on the toxicity consideration of elements,five groups of bulk metallic glass systems,including Ti based,Zr based,Fe based,Mg based and Ca based bulk metallic glasses are selected,and the la-test research progress on the biomedical application of them and the future research direction and potential clinical applications are proposed.

Abstract:Introduction of metals as biomaterials has been known for a long time. In the early development, sufficient strength and suitable mechanical properties were the main considerations for metal implants. With the development of new generations of biomaterials, the concepts of bioactive and biodegradable materials were proposed. Biological function design is very import for metal implants in biomedical applications. Three crucial design criteria are summarized for developing metal implants: (1) mechanical properties that mimic the host tissues; (2) sufficient bioactivities to form bio-bonding between implants and surrounding tissues; and (3) a degradation rate that matches tissue regeneration and biodegradability. This article reviews the development of metal implants and their applications in biomedical engineering. Development trends and future perspectives of metallic biomaterials are also discussed.
