Abstract:Objective To assess the effectiveness of indirect hemagglutination assay(IHA) in predicting schistosomiasis epidemics. Methods Schistosomiasis epidemic control data were collected from 2007 in 19 counties that reached the control criteria, 32 counties that arrived at transmission control, and 9 counties that reached transmission interrupting criteria in Anhui.Correlation between positive incidences of schistosomiasis screening by IHA and the infection rates of population in epidemic control areas were calculated for comparing the positive incidence and its 95% CI of schistosomiasis screening among different epidemic areas. Results In the epidemic control areas, there was a positive correlation between positive incidence of schistosomiasis screening by IHA and infection rates of the population (rs=0.687, P=0.001), and the difference was significant in areas regarding the epidemic control areas, transmission control and interrupting (x2=3373.28, P=0.000).In serum dilution by 1∶10, the 95%CI of positive rate was from 9.48% to 9.94% for epidemic control areas, from 2.71% to 3.03% for transmission control areas, and from 0.78% to 1.02% for transmission interrupting areas. Conclusion Positive rate of schistosomiasis by IHA appears to decrease with the decline schistosomiasis prevalence in population. This suggests that screening by IHA can to a certain extent reveal epidemic status of schistosomiasis in certain areas.
