Abstract:Background Livestock and poultry bones are by-products produced during meat processing and slaughter, represent valuable sources of highly nutritious natural substances. Despite their nutritional richness, technological limitations have hindered the optimal utilization of these resources. So it is necessary to identify and explore effective processing technologies for livestock and poultry bone in order to address the growing demands of the food industry. Scope and approach This review focuses on various innovative technologies that can be applied to produce or process livestock and poultry bone-based foods. The selected technologies include high pressure-temperature technology, enzymatic hydrolysis technology, Nano-micro pulverization technology, thermal reaction technology, fermentation technology, instant catapult steam-explosion technology, physical field processing technology, microencapsulation technology and separation technologies. Further, the advantages and disadvantages of each technique mentioned above are discussed in detail. In addition, this review also provides insights into the major types of nutrients and bone products derived from livestock and poultry bones. By addressing the technological aspects and presenting a comprehensive overview of the available methods, this review aims to contribute to the advancement of efficient and sustainable practices within the food industry. Key findings and conclusions It is necessary to consider integration of various technologies in which selected processing methods are combined for processing livestock and poultry bone foods. Research carried out by many researchers have proven that integrated processing technologies are more effective in producing desirable livestock and poultry bone-based foods. Notably, enzymatic hydrolysis technologies remain a prominent and focal point for research and applications in the processing of nutrients from livestock and poultry bones. Further exploration of the health effects of livestock and poultry bones nutrients on the human body is necessary to lay the groundwork for the development of functional foods derived from livestock and poultry bones. Physical field-assisted processing technology is gaining attention in the research of livestock and poultry bone processing technology. Future studies must address critical aspects, including environmental impact, cost-effectiveness, production efficiency, and the implementation of robust process control and monitoring mechanisms. By considering these factors, we can ensure the technological advancement of livestock and poultry bone processing as well as the development of sustainable and efficient practices in the broader context of food production.

Abstract:Hydrothermal processing (HTP) of poultry feed including pelleting, extrusion and expansion, have a considerable impact on feed hygiene, nutrient availability as well as on intestinal morphology and microbiota.While hydrothermal processes are effective strategies for hygienizing of the feed contaminated with non-spore-forming bacteria, processed feed is at the risk of recontamination, particularly during the cooling process. However, the impact of hydrothermal treatments on gut microbiota can be mostly confined to lactobacilli and their main metabolite, lactate, in the proximal part of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), particularly crop.The effect of HTP on nutrients availability is equivocal. The effect of hydrothermal processes on macro-nutrients such as starch, fat and protein is mostly negligible. However, most of vitamins (Vit), enzymes and anti-nutritional factors (ANF) e.g. enzyme inhibitors, lectins and phytate are prone to be reduced.The impact of hydrothermal treatments on starch gelatinization of feed is not substantial and gelatinization does not play a considerable role in starch digestion of a processed feed. Ileal starch digestibility of a processed feed is greatly dependent on the starch and non-starch polysaccharides profile of the feed ingredients, processing variables and their interactions.In contrast to the common believe, there has been no clear indication showing that, the beneficial impact of HTP on protein digestibility is through protein denaturation. Pelleting process seems to have no beneficial impact on amino acid (AA) digestibility. However, depending on the ingredients composition of the diet, the probability for improving AA digestibility by expansion and extrusion (HTST) processes can be considerable, especially when ingredients with high concentration of ANF are treated. Furthermore, the putative deleterious impact of the HTST processes on AA digestibility of poultry feed, through AA degradation and Maillard reactions, seems to be not pertinent.The harmful impact of the processes on the other thermolabile nutrients such as Vit cannot be ignored. There seems to be a lack of consistency in the effects of hydrothermal treatments on absorption, retention and deposition of minerals (Min) in poultry feed.Higher feed intake (FI) and passage rate (PR) usually coincide with feeding a hydrothermally processed diet. Increase in FI and PR, adversely affect nutrient availability for poultry. The direct effects of processing variables on starch, fat and protein digestibility, Min bioavailability and retention as well as digestive dynamics of starch and protein appear to be largely confounded with indirect impact of HTP through FI increment.The hydrothermal treatments, particularly the HTST processes, seem to increase fiber solubility and digesta viscosity which could lead to a negative impact on nutrient digestibility. However, reduction of ANF by these processes can have a positive impact on nutrient digestibility. Therefore the final outcome of HTP in terms of nutrient digestibility, is principally dependent on feed formulation, chemical composition of the feed ingredients or/and final feed, presence and concentration of ANF as well as hygiene status of the feed.

Abstract:Abstract Soybean meal (SBM) is a significant source of protein for poultry due to its high concentration of protein and amino acids profile. The primary objective of SBM processing is the reduction and deactivation of anti-nutritional factors (ANFs) to enhance nutrient digestibility. However, eliminating ANFs does not necessarily correlate with increased protein and amino acid content. Several processing methods, such as soaking, cooking, and commercial techniques, improve SBM protein digestibility. To sustain feeding qualities, soybeans must undergo heating to remove inherent chemicals that interfering with poultry digestion. However, both under and over-processing can impair meal digestibility. Extrusion heating significantly contributes to protein and starch digestibility while reducing certain ANFs. Thermomechanical and enzyme-assisted procedures reduce heat-resistant proteins more efficiently than extraction methods, producing soy protein concentrate (SPC) and fermentation. These techniques reduce ANFs in SBM, activating digestive enzymes and alleviating digestive tract pressure, leading to decreased endogenous protein deficits. Exogenous enzyme supplementation is a biotechnological approach for enhancing the nutritional content of SBM and certain other protein-rich products. However, different processing methods not only affect protein digestibility but also impact poultry production, gastrointestinal health, and the environment due to higher nitrogen excrement. Ammonia (NH 3 ) emissions, are a significant environmental concern in chicken farming, resulting from uric acid production during protein consumption. It has a negative impact on the environment and the health of birds/humans. This review investigates the impact of several processing techniques on the digestibility of SBM protein and the reduction of N 2 regarding one health concept. Future research should focus on identifying optimal processing methods maximizing protein digestibility while minimizing environmental nitrogen impacts.

Abstract:<p>Food powders are ubiquitous in people's daily life and food industry production with numerous advantages. With the increasing use of food powder in the world, it is increasingly important to understand the processing methods of food powder and the changes in physicochemical properties after processing in order to control the processing conditions and the quality of final products. Among the many processing methods for food powders, superfine grinding technique is an emerging and useful tool for superfine powder manufacturing with some unique and promising properties, which has made the technique successfully applied in food processing over the recent decades. This review highlights the information of the main superfine grinding methods in the field of food processing and the changes in performance after superfine grinding treatment. Also, potential challenges, promising opportunities, and perspectives of this technology are covered in the review. This review will provide theoretical foundation and guideline for superfine food powder processing, which can provide new approaches and ideas for the high‐value utilization of food raw materials as well as the food design.</p>

Effects of granular feed on reproductive metabolism of breeding pigeons, intestinal development and microbiota of squab pigeons-A double-edged sword

Abstract:Pigeons like to eat raw grains, but meat pigeon enterprises often use compound feeds instead of raw grains to feed breeding pigeons to increase economic efficiency, which may change the pigeon's dietary behavior, and consequently lead to health and welfare problems. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of granular feeds on the health of high-yielding breeding pigeons and squabs in lactation. The results showed that, compared with raw grain group, the provision of granular feed resulted in lower total feed intake without affecting the weight of lactating breeding pigeons. Meanwhile, reproductive metabolism was improved and no oxidative stress was observed, which indicated that granular feeds had a positive effect on breeding pigeon's health. However, granular feed adversely affected jejunum development in squabs, compare wtih raw grain group, the growth rate of squab was reduced. Sequencing of the 16 s rRNA gene revealed that granular feed induced intestinal microbiota dysbiosis in the squabs. The use of granular feed reduced the relative abundance of gut microorganisms in functional categories related to lipid and energy metabolism, resulting in a decrease in the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacterium, Ligilactobacillus, Atopobium, and an increase in that of inflammation-related Limosilactobacillus, which likely inhibited squab intestinal development and growth. Although the use of granular feed can improve breeder metabolism, it affect the composition of the microbial community and gut development of squabs. Therefore, the use of granular feed in production should be more careful to avoid causing growth obstruction of squab.

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the effects of enzyme-bacteria co-fermented feed on broilers, the basal diet (BF) was pretreated by microbial enzyme co-fermentation, and then different proportions of BF were replaced to study its effects on growth performance, nutrient metabolism and cecal microflora of broilers.Methods: Four hundred and eighty 1-day-old broilers were randomly divided into 6 groups. The control group was fed with BF, and groups 1 to 4 were treated with dried fermented feed (DFF) instead of 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% the BF, and group 5 was treated with wet fermented feed (WFF) instead of 10% the BF, named BF, 10% DFF, 15% DFF, 20% DFF, 25% DFF, and 10% WFF, respectively. The trial period was 42 days.Results: The results showed that the average daily feed intake and average daily gain of 10% DFF, 15% DFF, and 10% WFF groups were significantly higher than those of the control group at 22 to 42 days and 1 to 42 days (p 0.05). At the same time, the nutrient apparent metabolic rate and cecal microbial abundance of each treatment group had an increasing trend (p>0.05).Conclusion: In conclusion, the feed fermented by enzyme and bacteria had a potential promoting effect on the growth performance and nutrient digestibility of broilers.

Effects of different processing techniques of palm kernel cake on processing quality of pellet feed, nutrient digestibility, and intestinal microbiota of pigs

Abstract:The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of extrusion, fermentation, and enzymolysis of palm kernel cake on processing quality of pellet feed, nutrient digestibility, and intestinal microbiota of pigs. First, the pretreatment parameters of extrusion, enzymolysis, and fermentation of palm kernel cake were optimized. Then, PKC after three processing techniques were used to prepare pellet feed. A total of 160 crossbred piglets (Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire) with an average body weight of 28 ± 0.5 kg were used in an 8-wk feeding experiment. Pigs were randomly assigned to five treatments with four replicates per treatment and eight pigs per replicates. The five experimental groups were as follows: basal diet group (whole corn-soybean meal), 10% PKC group (PKC), 10% extrusion PKC group (PPKC), 10% enzymolysis PKC group (EPKC), and 10% fermented PKC group (FPKC), respectively. At the end of the experiment, four pigs from each treatment (randomly collected one pig per pen) were sacrificed by administering a pentobarbital overdose, the gut and blood samples were collected for the quantification analysis of microbiota, hematological parameters, and apparent total tract nutrient digestibility. The results showed that all three processing techniques significantly decreased the contents of crude fiber of PKC (P < 0.01), pulverization rate (P < 0.01), powder content (P < 0.01), and increased the hardness and gelatinization starch of pellet feed (P < 0.05) compared to PKC group. In addition, PPKC significantly improved the dry matter, crude protein, and ether extract content, blood indices and average daily feed intake compared to PKC group (P < 0.01), while the parameters were similar among FPKC, EPKC, and control group (P > 0.01). Furthermore, all three processing techniques significantly increased the Lactobacillus and decreased the Escherichia levels in feces or gut compared to PKC. Collectively, extrusion, fermentation, and enzymolysis of PKC had positively enhanced the pellet quality, growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and gut microbiota, extrusion exhibited a superior feeding effect compared to fermentation and enzymolysis.

Abstract:The advantages of using granular mixed fodders in comparison whith the loose сompound feeds have been analyzed in the article. A detailed analysis of the production of granulated feed in the world and in Ukraine for the last ten years has been presented. The article is dedicated to the justification of the use of granulation technology in the feed industry. The advantages and disadvantages of granulation technology are presented, as well as the structural scheme of the traditional technology of production of granulated mixed fodders with the receipt of granules grains is considered. The detailed analysis of technological processes of the traditional technology ofgranulated mixed fodders production with the receipt of granule grains with the description of technological regimes of each process has been given. The main disadvantages of traditional technology of granulated feed production have been considered and possible solutions of these problems are presented. As the development of the feed industry is characterized by the intensification of technological processes aimed primarily at improving sanitary quality, the methods of preliminary wet-heat preparation of mixed fodder, in particular, the application of expansion to the granulation process, have been presented as the basis for further development of the advanced granulation technology. The advantages of using expansion, the principle of the expander and the technological features of the process have been considered. The generalization of the conducted analytical and experimental studies allowed to develop the advanced technology of granulation in the form of a blend granulated crumb, which will increase the output of finished products. The technology for the production of granulated сompound feed in the form of a blend granulated crumb and expanded crumb have been presented in the article. The description of technological processes and technological regimes (moisture of products, use of sieves, vapor pressure, steam consumption, duration, etc.) have been presented too. The physical and microbiological characteristics of granulated and expanded feed, as well as granulated grains and expanded grains are given.

Abstract:Existing studies in the field of application of the granulation process have proven the effectiveness of this process in eliminating the disadvantages that loose compound feeds have. The technology of granulation of compound feeds allows to ensure stable uniformity, improve sanitary and hygienic indicators, increase nutritional value, increase shelf life, as well as minimize losses during its transportation and distribution. Due to the growth in the production of compound feeds, continuous improvement of the equipment, machines and technologies used in granulation is required. We have made a comparative analysis of granulators for various types of indicators: economic, technical, technological, energy efficiency indicators. Three approaches were used to compare them: the rank approach, the standardization method, and the dimensionality reduction method. As a result, the optimization of the obtained results was carried out and, summing up the results of all three methods, the feed granulators were noted, which are the best in terms of the totality of all the parameters studied.

Abstract:Many fibrous ingredients incorporated in poultry feed to reduce production costs have low digestibility and cause poor growth in poultry. However, all plant-based fibers are not equal, and thus exert variable physiological effects on the birds, including but not limited to, digestibility, growth performance, and microbial fermentation. Several types of fibers, especially oligosaccharides, when supplemented in poultry diets in isolated form, exhibit prebiotic effects by enhancing beneficial gut microbiota, modulating gut immunity, boosting intestinal mucosal health, and increasing the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) in the gut. Recently, poultry producers are also facing the challenge of limiting the use of antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) in poultry feed. In addition to other alternatives in use, exogenous non-starch polysaccharides digesting enzymes (NSPase) and prebiotics are being used to provide substrates to support the gut microbiome. We also conducted a meta-analysis of different studies conducted in similar experimental conditions to evaluate the variability and conclusiveness in effects of NSPase on growth performance of broilers fed fibrous ingredients. This review presents a holistic approach in discussing the existing challenges of incorporating high-fiber ingredients in poultry feed, as well as strategies to fully utilize the potential of such ingredients in improving feed efficiency and gut health of poultry.

Abstract:Due to the shortage of poultry feed ingredients and the resultant continuous increase in their prices, researchers have been looking for their alternatives. Agricultural wastes and by-products (such as wheat bran, rice husk, sour cherry kernel, palm kernel, cassava pulp, rapeseed meal, and corn meal) are among such alternatives, although they cannot be used directly due to their high crude fiber content. Fermentation is an evolving process that converts complex substrates into simpler molecules using bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms. It improves the nutrient content of feed ingredients. It is also used to ferment agricultural waste materials in order to improve their nutritional value, so they can be utilized as broiler feed. Moreover, it can provide an inexpensive feed source to poultry industry and convert waste materials into a useable product. Different bacterial and fungal strains are employed for fermentation. This review focuses on the use of fungal fermented agricultural waste-based feed and its effects on broiler chicken growth performance, gut morphology, and gastrointestinal tract microecology.
Effects of extrusion processing on nutrients in dry pet food

Abstract:Abstract Extrusion cooking is commonly used to produce dry pet foods. As a process involving heat treatment, extrusion cooking can have both beneficial and detrimental effects on the nutritional quality of the product. Desirable effects of extrusion comprise increase in palatability, destruction of undesirable nutritionally active factors and improvement in digestibility and utilisation of proteins and starch. Undesirable effects of extrusion include reduction of protein quality due to e.g. the Maillard reaction, decrease in palatability and loss of heat‐labile vitamins. Effects of extrusion processing on the nutritional values of feeds for livestock have been well documented. Literature results concerning effects of extrusion on dry pet foods, however, are scarce. Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the effects of feed systems in parent pigeons on the growth performance, carcass characteristics, organ index, and serum biochemical parameters of squabs. A total of 60 pairs of parent pigeons were selected and divided into 2 groups randomly. The parent pigeons were fed with two feed systems that were whole grains plus granulated feed (WGG) and complete-formula granulated feed (CFG) for 21 d. The results showed that CFG diet could increase carcass yield, heart index, content of trypsin, and growth hormone of squabs (P < 0.05), but decrease feed intake, gizzard index, b* value, malondialdehyde concentration, and uric acid concentration significantly (P < 0.05) comparing with WGG diet. There were no significant differences among the 2 groups in feed intake from d 1 to d 21, abdominal fat yield and body weight changes of squabs and parent pigeons (P > 0.05). It can be concluded from these observations that CFG was beneficial to squab which could improve digestive enzyme and antioxidant ability in the serum, so the CFG should be suggested in practice.

Abstract:In this study, a coarse cereal compound powder (CCCP) was prepared through enzymolysis, fermentation, and joint treatment with 10 coarse cereal types as raw materials. Using 10 evaluation indices, namely the scavenging capacity of 1,1‐diphenyl‐2‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH•), 2,2′‐azino‐bis‐(3‐ethylbenzthiazoline‐6‐sulfonic acid) (ABTS+), hydroxyl (OH•) and superoxide anion (O2–), the Fe2+ chelating capacity, the content of anthocyanin, flavone, soluble dietary fiber, reducing sugar and protein, antioxidant activity, and functional components of CCCP prepared by different methods were compared. Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed to establish a quality evaluation model of CCCP. Then, the effects of different treatments on the microstructure of CCCP were investigated. Two principal components (PCs) were extracted from PCA, with a cumulative contribution rate of 97.014%. In addition, the analysis of thermodynamic properties indicated that the initial gelatinization temperature of CCCP decreased after enzymolysis and fermentation and that it was easier to gelatinize. Particle size analyses revealed that different treatments could reduce the sample particles to different degrees. The average particle size in the three study groups decreased. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that after different treatments, the samples were destroyed to different extents, which facilitated easy dissolution of active substances. Fourier‐transformed‐infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed that the changes of CCCP functional groups after fermentation and joint treatment were more significant than those after enzymolysis. Practical Application In this study, enzymolysis and fermentation techniques were used to improve the antioxidant activity and functional components of CCCP, and the effects of different treatments on the microstructure of CCCP were investigated. The bioavailability and nutrient composition of CCCP could be significantly improved by pretreatment, provide useful reference for the development of beneficial ingredients in cereal meal products and the application of different pretreatment methods.

Abstract:Abstract This research aimed to investigate the effects of supplements containing fermented feed made from Citri Sarcodactylis Fructus by-products (CSFBP-Fermented feed) on the growth performance, immunological function, and gut health of broilers. 1080 cyan-shank partridge birds aged 47 days were chosen and casually distributed to four groups, each with 6 replicates and 45 birds per replicate. The experimental groups were provided with 1% (group T2), 3% (group T3) and 5% (group T4) of CSFBP-fermented feed in the basic diet, while the control group (group T1) received the basic diet. The findings revealed that supplementation with CSFBP-Fermented feed reduced ADFI and FCR and improved ADG in birds ( P < 0.05). MDA levels in the serum of birds fed CSFBP-fermented feed were lower than in the control group ( P < 0.05). The CAT activity in the serum of broilers increased after supplementation with 3% CSFBP-Fermented feed ( P < 0.05). Supplementing broilers with CSFBP-fermented feed enhanced VH in the ileum, jejunum, and duodenum ( P < 0.05). The addition of 3% CSFBP-Fermented feed decreased CD in the jejunum ( P < 0.05). The addition of 3% and 5% CSFBP-Fermented feed increased the mRNA expression of ZO-1 and Occludin in the jejunum of broiler chickens and reduced the mRNA expression of IL-6 ( P < 0.05). The addition of 3% CSFBP-Fermented feed increased the mRNA expression of Claudin in the jejunum of broiler chickens and reduced IL-1β mRNA expression ( P < 0.05). Compared to the control group, all experimental groups exhibited decreased mRNA expression of TNF-α and INF-γ in the jejunal mucosa of the birds ( P < 0.05). According to research using high-throughput sequencing of microorganisms' 16S rDNA, and an analysis of α-diversity found that supplementing broilers with 3% CSFBP-Fermented feed decreased the number of bacteria in their cecum ( P < 0.05). Bacteroidota was higher in all groups after supplementation with CSFBP-Fermented feed. At the genus level, after addition with 3% CSFBP-Fermented feed, the abundance of Bacteroide and Prevotellaceae_Ga6A1_group were higher than the control group (33.36% vs 29.95%, 4.35% vs 2.94%). The abundance of Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group and Fusobacterium were lower than the control group (5.52% vs. 7.17%,0.38% vs. 1.33%). In summary, supplementing the diet with CSFBP-Fermented feed can promote the growth of performance by enhancing intestinal morphology, and barrier function, as well as modulating intestinal inflammatory factors and microbial composition in broilers.

Abstract:The modern development of animal husbandry and poultry farming is impossible without compound feed, which is balanced in terms of energy indicators, nutrients and biologically active substances. The presence of biologically active substances in the rations of animals leads to an increase in the cost of compound feed, which affects the cost of livestock products. However, an insufficient amount of biologically active substances leads to the occurrence of diseases that exclude the possibility of further effective use of animals. Probiotic feed products based on live cultures of microorganisms are used to ensure the body's need for biologically active substances of farm animals. Probiotic feed supplement EnzActive based on active yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is widely used in feeding farm animals. This supplement is able to increase the assimilation of nutrients by blocking the negative impact of harmful microorganisms on the condition of the mucous membranes of the gastrointestinal tract, on the processes of digestion and removal of the end products of metabolism. Based on theoretical and experimental data, a structural scheme for the production of granulated compound feed using EnzActive probiotic feed additive is proposed, which involves stepwise dosing and mixing of microcomponents with EnzActive probiotic feed additive, further mixing with prepared and dosed components of compound feed to ensure high uniformity of EnzActive distribution in the finished product. The technology for the production of granulated combined feed products using the EnzActive probiotic feed additive has been developed, which allows for the production of highly homogeneous finished products with a fixed stable composition that meets the physiological needs of farm animals. The physical properties of loose and granulated compound feed with the EnzActive probiotic feed additive were experimentally determined, which indicate that, compared to loose, granular compound feed with the EnzActive probiotic feed additive, it has a smaller angle of natural slope, better flowability, and greater volume, which leads to space saving during transportation and storage. The main quality indicator of the granulated compound feed is the fragility of the granules, which was 27%. It has been established that the introduction of probiotic feed additive EnzActive into the compound feed does not affect the change in the physical properties of the finished compound feed products. Microbiological indicators were determined, which indicate that the number of yeast cells in the granulated compound feed with the EnzActive probiotic feed additive is 51.6% compared to the number of yeast cells in the loose compound feed with the EnzActive probiotic feed additive.

Abstract:Protein is one of the most important components of food which significantly contributes to the structure, functionality, and sensory properties which may affect consumer acceptability of processed products. Conventional thermal processing affects protein structure and induce undesirable degradation of food quality. This review provides an overview of emerging pretreatment and drying technologies (plasma treatment, ultrasound treatment, electrohydrodynamic, radio frequency, microwave, and superheated steam drying) in food processing by assessing protein structural changes to enhance functional and nutritional properties. In addition, mechanisms and principles of these modern technologies are described while challenges and opportunities for the development of these techniques in the drying process are also critically analyzed. Plasma discharges can lead to oxidative reactions and cross-linking of proteins that can change the structure of proteins. Microwave heating contributes to the occurrence of isopeptide or disulfide bonds which promotes α-helix and β-turn formation. These emerging technologies can be adopted to improve protein surface by exposing more hydrophobic groups which restrict water interaction. It is expected that these innovative processing technologies should become a preferred choice in the food industry for better food quality. Moreover, there are some limitations for industrial scale application of these emerging technologies that need to be addressed.
