Abstract:Suspension stiffness affects vehicle comfort and handling performance. The stiffness optimization of the transverse leaf spring suspension can be achieved by adjusting the distance between the two central installation positions of the leaf spring. This method can avoid changing the structure of the leaf spring, reduce the difficulty of product development, and shorten the product development cycle, so this type of suspension has high engineering application value. In the paper, a finite element model of the transverse leaf spring is established, and the characteristics of the stiffness, deformation and stress of the leaf spring with the distance are studied. According to the objectives of suspension dynamic deflection, body roll angle and leaf spring reliability, the distance matching design is carried out, and the design scheme is experimentally verified. The research shows that the stiffness of the leaf spring under the opposite direction loading condition is greater than that of the same direction loading condition, and the difference between the two data increases with the increase of the distance. When the distance is 800 mm, the stiffness of the suspension is 102.1 N/mm under the same loading and 220.4 N/mm under reverse loading, the maximum stress is 1487 MPa, the dynamic deflection 39.2 mm, and the maximum body roll angle is less than 6.0°. All of the above indicators meet the design requirements. The research results provide theoretical basis and reference for the design of a transverse leaf spring suspension.

Abstract:Based on reliability theory,combined with finite element method for structure optimization,the lightweight design for the lower arm of a suspension is conducted. After lightweight design,the mass of structure is reduced slightly and its reliability is improved greatly,attaining the goal of structure optimization. The application of optimized structure to prototype vehicle verifies the correctness of finite element analysis and the feasibility of the optimization method.

Abstract:First of all this paper established a mathematical model of the key parts of a contact typed step measuring instrument a lever mechanism with cross leaf spring support —— and carried on a preliminary design of this mechanism. The stress finite dement analysis of straight leaf spring shows that the stress distribution of this structure is quite uneven. The designing parameters of varying sectioned leaf spring was obtained by means of optimal design of leaf spring parameters. Under the action of 0.2N external loading, a simulation experiment was carried out respectively on varying sectioned leaf spring by adopting the Algor finite dement software. The testing results show that the ratio of maximum stress and minimum stress was reduced to 7.7 from 31.4 of the straight leaf spring. The torsional stiffness was 0.06 N/m and its changing rate of measuring force was 36.6 N/m, thus the mechanic properties of this mechanism was improved to a great extent.

Abstract:Aiming at decreasing shock absorber's side load in the MacPherson suspension system,improving suspension performances and reducing manufacture cost,a multiobjective optimization approach was proposed.This virtual-prototype-based approach combines the penalty function algorithms SUMT,vehicle system dynamics simulation and finite Element Analysis.Taking a small passenger car as an example, structure parameters were optimized for this curved side load spring.The results of vehicle dynamics simulation,the experimental data of test rig and on road test indicate the improvement of ride performances,in which the side load on damper rod reduces almost to zero and the first resonance peak amplitude of the body acceleration decreases by nearly 24.37%.Besides,the average weight of spring samples also reduces by 2.71% so as to save the manufacture cost.

Abstract:A suspension optimization strategy which could enhance ride comfort and road friendliness of heavy truck was presented based on vehicle dynamic simulation. Thus, the reduction of driving fatigue and the extension of road service life could be realized. Firstly, a 10-DOF heavy truck assembled with leaf spring road model system is established using Matlab/Simulink. Subsequently, the passive air suspension matching the truck is chosen and the semi-active air suspension fuzzy controller is designed. In order to compare the effects of different suspensions, simulation results of leaf spring suspension truck, passive air suspension truck and semi-active air suspension truck are analyzed. Passive air suspension is chosen for further optimization. Through simulation, changing laws of ride comfort and road friendliness following the variation of suspension damping are summarized, from which the best damping coefficients of passive air suspension are finally obtained.

Abstract:Leaf Springs find vast applications in different types of mechanical systems. In spite of lot of research, spring steel leaf springs find a lot of applications in all types of heavy vehicle. Weight reduction is one of the present trends in the automotive vehicles and many researchers worked on better materials and design optimization for the same. Composite leaf springs represent some application of composite materials in the field of automotive lightweight materials. This paper is focused to design a natural fibre reinforced hybrid polymer composite mono leaf parabolic spring to replace the existing steel multi-leaf semi-elliptical spring in an attempt of reducing the unsprung mass and investigate its stiffness characteristics by different methods. The spring so designed is analysed for its deflection and hence for its stiffness, by Virtual work method, whose complex integral was solved numerically by Gauss Quadrature. Along with analyzing the stress pattern and making sure the failsafe condition is met, ANSYS is used to construct a model using Solidworks and then use that model to compute the deflection. In the end, three genuine prototypes of the springs were made utilizing match board wooden moulds and the hand lay-up process. These springs were then put through a static load test in a Universal Testing Machine. According to the findings, the spring that is developed to take the place of the present spring will likely have the requisite dynamic and vibration characteristics, and it will also be 83% lighter; as a consequence, it will be suggested as a very excellent replacement. After that, a harmonic disturbance was applied to the springs, and the resulting deflection was analysed. A test rig was built for this specific purpose, and the spring was put under harmonic forcing.

Abstract:The structural optimization design for suspension structure of vehicle was carried with some structural optimization design methods. With the analysis of vehicle’s steering conditions and the layout of the vehicle body,the design and non-design regions of topology optimization were determined. With the topology optimization results,the new engineering structure was built. The key size of the new structure was optimized with the reliability design method based on intensity and stress intervene theory. The results of reliability optimization design were compared with that of size optimization and shape optimization,which showed the validity and feasibility of the structural optimization design method. The work of this paper supported a method for structural optimization design.

Abstract:The leaf spring has significant hysteresis characteristics due to the interleaf friction. The traditional three-link model could not simulate the hysteresis characteristics at all. According to the dynamic load test results one can find that the dynamic stiffness of leaf spring has a nonlinear relationship with the travel distance and the load frequency has a tiny influence on it. Based on the traditional three-link model, this paper proposed a simulation modeling method by introducing torsional friction on the revolute joints. The key parameters including torsional spring stiffness, friction torque preload, stiction transition velocity and max stiction deformation are optimized by combining the ADAMS and OPTIMUS. The comparison analysis between the simulation and test results of front and rear leaf springs have revealed that the maximum average errors are 4.84% and 6.41%, respectively. The proposed simulation modeling method of leaf spring lays a foundation for the high efficiency and precision modeling of vehicles on ride comfort.

Abstract:Due to the high load-bearing capacity and light weight, composite leaf spring with variable width and variable thickness has been increasingly used in the automobile industry to replace the conventional steel leaf spring with a heavy weight. The optimum structural design of composite leaf spring is particularly favorable for the weight reduction. In this study, an effective algorithm is developed for structural optimization of composite leaf spring. The mechanical performance of composite leaf spring with designed dimensions is characterized using a combined experimental and computational approach. Specifically, the composite leaf spring with variable width and variable thickness was prepared using the filament winding process, and the three-dimensional finite element (FE) model of the designed composite leaf spring is developed. The experimental sample and FE model of composite leaf spring are tested under the three-point bending method. From experimental and simulation results, it is shown that the bending stiffness of the designed leaf spring meets the design requirement in the automotive industry, while the results of stress calculation along all directions meet the requirements of material strength requirement. The developed algorithm contributes to the design method for optimizing the stiffness and strength performance of the composite leaf spring.

Abstract:This study describes the effects of bounce, brake, and roll behavior of a bus toward its leaf spring suspension systems. Parabolic leaf springs are designed based on vertical deflection and stress; however, loads are practically derived from various modes especially under harsh road drives or emergency braking. Parabolic leaf springs must sustain these loads without failing to ensure bus and passenger safety. In this study, the explicit nonlinear dynamic finite element (FE) method is implemented because of the complexity of experimental testing A series of load cases; namely, vertical push, wind-up, and suspension roll are introduced for the simulations. The vertical stiffness of the parabolic leaf springs is related to the vehicle load-carrying capability, whereas the wind-up stiffness is associated with vehicle braking. The roll stiffness of the parabolic leaf springs is correlated with the vehicle roll stability. To obtain a better bus performance, two new parabolic leaf spring designs are proposed and simulated. The stress level during the loadings is observed and compared with its design limit. Results indicate that the newly designed high vertical stiffness parabolic spring provides the bus a greater roll stability and a lower stress value compared with the original design. Bus safety and stability is promoted, as well as the load carrying capability.
Optimization of Vehicle Suspension Parameters Based on Comfort and Tyre Dynamic Load

Abstract:In order to improve vehicle ride comfort and to reduce tyre dynamic load to ground,vehicle model was established for the study of multiple objectives with a truck.The unified objective function method was used for the optimization of vehicle suspension parameters.The optimization results indicate that the values of suspension stiffness decrease and the values of suspension damping increase.The variety of front suspension parameters is less than that of back.Compared with the former,root-mean-square of vertical acceleration of vehicle body decreases by 20%,root-mean-square of dynamic load of front-wheel decreases by 40%,and that of rear-wheel decreases remarkably by 49%.It is shown that using this method not only improves the ride comfort but also reduces the tyre dynamic load to ground.

Abstract:Composite leaf springs represent a key application of composite materials in the field of automotive lightweight materials. Stiffness, as a critical parameter of composite leaf springs, is closely related to the handling stability and ride comfort of automobiles. Therefore, this paper proposes an explicit theoretical model, which can consider the anisotropy of composite materials and detailed structure of the leaf spring, to predict the stiffness based on the law of energy conservation. The obtained results are verified against the results of the finite element method and bench test of basalt/epoxy samples. Moreover, the influence of the relevant design parameters on the stiffness is analyzed to provide guidance for the stiffness matching of composite leaf springs. The thickness of the composite leaf spring considerably influences its stiffness. As a key parameter representing the bearing capacity, the strength is closely related to the reliability of leaf springs. Based on the Tasi-Wu strength failure criterion, the influence of the relevant design parameters on the strength ratio of a composite leaf spring is analyzed under the constraint of stiffness. An increase in the width of the composite leaf spring enhances its bearing capacity when the stiffness is required to be within a certain range.

Abstract:The multi-methods to calculate the stiffness of leaf springs are discussed.Using the line contact element provided by Nastran software to analyze the stiffness of a leaf spring.In addition,the influence of the friction characteristics on the stiffness is also involved.The load-deflection curves during loading and unloading process subjected to static and dynamic loads are presented.Compared with conventional method, the results of FEA are reasonable and FEA can provide more details of contact and friction between leafs. The method and conclusion in this paper can be used for the design and analysis of the similar products.
Structural optimization of ultra-thin leaf spring for weakening elastic hysteresis effect and enhancing fatigue life

Abstract:Small-size ultra-thin leaf spring as the key elastic sensitive member is widely used in the precision electro-mechanical products. However, owing to the unavoidable elastic hysteresis effect of leaf spring, it always suffers from a significant graceful degradation of designed deflection and subsequently fatigue fracture under the condition of cyclic loading. In order to weaken the elastic hysteresis effect, structural optimization according to sequential quadratic programming method for reducing stress concentration of leaf spring was first carried out by simulations, and then the identification of elastic hysteresis effect for optimal leaf spring was carried out by experiments. Compared with the original design, the maximum deflection deviation for single cycle is decreased from 0.026 mm to 0.002 mm. For the sake of predicting the fatigue life of optimal structure of leaf spring being on the service, a loading block with multistage variable stress amplitudes was experimentally recorded and fitted by normal probability density function, and then a statistical probability method by mathematical analysis was proposed. Compared with the original design, the predicted fatigue life of leaf spring is 736000 loading blocks, which is ten times than that before structural optimization. A structural optimization for reducing stress concentration can significantly weaken the elastic hysteresis effect and enhance the fatigue life, which is benefit for the elastic stability of leaf spring during engineering application.

Abstract:To eliminate or minimize the undesired lateral force in traditional MacPherson suspension and related side wear of shock absorber,a kind of side load coil spring is used in some vehicles to replace the conventional coil spring.In this paper,taking a passenger car as example,a multibody dynamics model for MacPherson suspension is built and a simulation is performed with the lateral force of shock absorber as objective in structure optimization of side load spring using finite element analysis method and validated by tests.The results indicate that using optimized side load coil spring can markedly reduce the lateral load and side wear while maintain the performance of original suspension.
Optimum design for the vice-spring of Composite material leaf spring

Abstract:The mechanical model of composite material vice-spring is designed in this paper.According to the theory of laminated plate,the dangerous stress and the maximum flexibility of vice-spring are gotten.Considering the strength and the stiffness as constraint condition,the minimum mass as the object function,an optimum design of the vice spring is made through the optimum method,and we can get the optimum structure of the vice spring under the condition of minimum quality.

Abstract:In order to satisfy the balance between manipulation stability and driving smoothness in the design of vehicle suspension,based on vehicle design optimization and multi-body dynamics,a 3-digital model of heavy truck suspension is developed by virtual simulation,its optimal analysis is carried out,an optimal design method that can make the suspension system parameters match the stiffness parameters is put forward.The results show that: the vehicle dynamic performance can be improved effectively;the direction of suspension stiffness and wheel displacement can be controlled preferably.1 tab,8 figs,10 refs.

Abstract:Leaf springs are designed to bear loads as well as shocks in automotive vehicles. Two leaves of glass fiber-reinforced composites (GFRCs) of various shapes sandwiched between steel plates were analyzed for application in a minitruck. Computer-aided engineering analysis was performed for five different types of GFRC material leaf springs: flat leaf, flat and parabolic leaf, both parabolic leaf, both parabolic leaf springs with aluminium alloy bushes at the eye-end and spring steel multi-leaf springs. A silencer pad was used in the parabolic leaf spring to reduce delamination and vibration at contact points of the mating leaf. The various shapes and combinations of leaves provided varying parameters, namely, the deformation, maximum equivalent strain, maximum equivalent stress and fatigue life. The CAE results showed that compared with the other combinations, the flat leaf and parabolic leaf combinations provided the maximum equivalent strain, maximum equivalent stress and fatigue life.
