Abstract:Some new developments of the modeling techniques for the municipal water distribution network are expounded with both the microscopic model and the macroscopic model concerned herein. The accuracy of the microscopic model is improved with the methods of the parameter calibration, the data collection and the simulation of the control elements; and the shortages of macroscopic model can be covered with the combination of both the theoretical equation and the empirical one as well. The analysis on the instability of the model concerned is made with the method based on neural network, with which the uncertainty of the status model is known. The macroscopic model for the water distribution network is then established with the method of model driven neural network, which has better learning and fault-tolerant abilities.

Abstract:We have affirmed, on the basis of the inherent feature of the water network and the practical experiences in this country, that the dependence of pressure forecasting to the operating status of a water-distributing network is evident. From this, a realistic dynamic model of network operating status could be established on the basis of recent and historical information records. This opinion has been verified by practices of some cities, it could be applied directly to optimizational dispatching of urban water network operation.

Abstract:This paper deals with the use of optimal control techniques in large-scale water distribution networks. According to the network characteristics and actual state of the water supply system in China, the implicit model, which may be solved by utilizing the hierarchical optimization method, is established. In special, based on the analyses of the water supply system containing variable-speed pumps, a software tool has been developed successfully. The application of this model to the city of Shenyang (China) is compared to experiential strategy. The results of this study show that the developed model is a very promising optimization method to control the large-scale water supply systems.

Abstract:Distribution system modeling simplifies pipe network in skeletonization and simulates the flow and water quality by using generalized water demand patterns. While widely used, the approach has not been examined fully on how it impacts the modeling fidelity. This study intends to evaluate these consequences in a typical water distribution system. We first analyzed tracer test data at 13 locations using a calibrated EPANET model with generalized water demand patterns. Modeling results agree with actual measurements in six locations with high water demand and flow velocity near the storage tank, while fail to replicate the variations in network abundant of dead- ends and Tee/ Cross junctions. Then we further investigated the causes of model inaccuracy using real- time water demand data covering similar to 35% water users. This paper compares several levels of pipe skeletonization and water demand aggregation in water age simulation, and shows significant impacts on water age results because of discrete water demand at pipe nodes. The analysis reveals varying flow properties and the movement of highly aged water parcels in two types of pipe configurations. These results have the implications on network modeling and further studies of water quality simulations.

Abstract:Distribution network modeling is often used to investigate and manage water quality variations in a distribution network. It relies on pipe network simplification through skeletonization and uses water demand patterns that are often generalized or derived historical monthly water usage records. As automatic water meter reading and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) technologies are widely used, it is possible now to explore the hydraulic complexity in the network. Processes such as stochastic and pulse water demand on solute transport characteristics can be investigated. Fidelity and appropriateness of network modeling by network simplification can be quantified. In this paper, these two questions are assessed by using real-time water demand measurements and comparative network simulations for an independent segment of a large water utility in the U.S. An all-pipe all-demand (APAD) model and an hourly demand variation curves (HDVC) demand model are simulated for the same network operations. The results show the prevalence of intermittent and pulse water demand particularly in network perimeters and dead-end branches. The results also highlight different node hydraulic properties such as Re, water age, and flow oscillation when water demand in APAD model is replaced by HDVC-based time-continuous generalized demand patterns. The degrees of such difference varies specific to the distribution network configurations such as H-loop, branches and dead-ends. These additional insights provide further understanding of the varying flow properties and their impacts on the movement of water parcels in pipe configurations. It is suggested that APAD network simulation be used for accuracy-demanding water quality simulation.

Abstract:Introducing node water age as constraint of optimal operation and EPANET 2.0 toolkit as a tool of the hydraulic calculation and water quality simulation of the network,a coupled model for optimal operation of the multi-source water supply network was established.A dual-genetic algorithm was used to solve the model.The model can simplify variable space,quicken convergence speed and improve solving efficiency.The model was applied to the actual water supply network and a fairly good result was obtained.

Abstract:Hydraulic models have been regarded as an essential tool for controlling and operating water distribution systems (WDSs). With the rapid development of communication networks, real-time control is becoming a hot issue. The nodal water demand as the state variable should be estimated for the control and management of WDS. Due to the lack of sufficient observed data to determine the nodal water demand, the hydraulic model may result in unreasonable model outputs, which are undesirable in actual engineering. We develop a Bayesian inference method to fuse nodal pressure prior information into the state estimation process to address this problem. The developed approach can constrain the nodal water demand estimation process and keep the model outputs (e.g., nodal water pressure) in the feasible domain. This approach is applied to a simple network and a realistic large-scale network. Results show that prior nodal pressure information can significantly increase estimation accuracy and decrease the uncertainty, and the estimated nodal pressure can be confined to a feasible domain.

Abstract:In this paper, the modelling of a class of distributed water supply networks is considered, where the modelling of pipes, valves, pump stations and reservoirs are presented separately. Two laws, nodal mass balance and energy conservation, are introduced to derive a general model for the water supply networks. The pumps are assumed to be working in parallel and a hybrid model is provided to describe the dynamics of pump stations, the discrete/ continuous variables in which represent the status (on or off) and the speed of pumps, respectively. Finally, a case study is given to illustrate the effectiveness of our proposed methods.

Abstract:The water distribution network rebuilding and extending modeling is an effective measure to exploit the potentialities of pipelines and reuse them , in order to decrease the high leakage rate and improve the safety of water supply . To enhance the stability of the entire water supply system ,a reasonable planning of water distribution in H City ,according to the practical situations in the cold region in North China ,can save investment , reduce operating costs , shorten the construction schedule and strengthen the abilities toward emergencies .It's necessary to plan the water distribution system with a reliable model to solve contradictions between supply and demand .Simulating operating conditions are analyzed in this paper by building a model of pipelines network in H City to optimize the layout ,make the pipe network match the water plant ,satisfy the demand and guarantee the safety of water supply .

Abstract:This paper describes a project to integrate EPANET, Giris and SCADA to assist water engineers in assessing the water distribution system in city S. The integrated system simulates the flow and concentration of chemical contaminants in municipality's water distribution system. The integrated model is a powerful tool for routine planning and emergency response. The capabilities of the model can greatly assist in the decision making processes for network asset inventory, rehabilitation requirements, and financial planning. The system was tested using the S City database composed of approximately 13219 junctions and 14832 pipes whose diameter not less than 300 mm.

Abstract:Simulation is considered a fundamental component in research on management of water resources, which can provide information to decision makers. An integrated model is developed here for simulating water resource management. After analysis of influences on water use, this model was separated into seven main modules: Population, Economy, Land Change, Water Demand, Water Supply, Wastewater, and Water Quality. Relationships between and within the modules were formulated based on mathematical models. The model was run dynamically based on system dynamics. It was then used to successfully simulate water use in Laoshan District of China after validation and calibration by historical data, with small mean relative error (<15 %) and great coefficient of determination (>0.65). Three scenarios were analyzed to develop effective water use solutions to support development of socioeconomic and ecological health. The results show that integrated management toward improving water use efficiency and the water-resource use mix is an effective solution. And the integrated model developed here is useful for decision makers to simulate and analyze the scenarios for water resource management.

Abstract:This paper presents a real-time WDS hydraulic model combining with field measurements provided by supervisory control and data acquisition systems (SCADA). The system is composed of three parts, namely SCADA, state estimation server and client terminal. For the real-time demand estimation, a weighted least-squares scheme based recursive state estimator and local linear matrix transform algorithm are applied. The WDS model system is applied in Guangzhou city, which is one of the largest cities in China, and proves that the proposed nodal demand correction algorithms are effective for real-time WDS model.

Abstract:This study proposed the theory of water value balance and built the dynamic model system, based on the water value balance index. To solve dynamic weight issues, the entropy weight model was used, while the gray forecasting model was used for supplement missing data. Simulation platform integrates mathematical module, simulation module, property database and spatial database of urban water system in Harbin, which based on Matlab, C#, CloudSim, Oracle, ArcGIS and its secondary development technology. The results showed that urban water systems had a strong capacity to utilize water to capture value between May and mid-September, the value obtained was not sufficient to compensate the loss caused in the periods from January to April and from late September to December. The loss of water due to unknown causes was close to 7%, while the cost of water quality restoration accounted for 0.89% of GDP.

Abstract:In spite of their hydraulic, temporal, and spatial connections, water and wastewater pipeline systems are traditionally planned and designed in a stationary and separated manner. This practice may have, in the early stages, already rooted future system operational risk. An integrated model was developed to evaluate the performance of these two systems, planned and designed according to the traditional water demand quota approaches adopted in China. The integrated model included an agent-based water end-use model to generate water demand and wastewater discharge, which was used to drive a water distribution system model and a drainage system model, both developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In a case study in Beijing, the proposed model forecasted lower water demand and wastewater discharge, leading to oversized water systems designed by the traditional approach. However, the greater diurnal fluctuations would cause operational problems during the peak hour, as well as off-peak periods, in both pipeline systems. Vulnerable hotspots for urban water services were thus identified and potential mitigation options discussed.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the port economy in China, the higher and more accurate requirements from the large scale and integrated modern port projects are placed on the planning, design and management of the water distribution network, and then some defects from the traditional methods for the design and monitoring of the water distribution network have come out gradually. Consequently, the software for simulation of the water distribution network appended with the functions such as hydraulic calculation, system analysis, etc. increasingly become a major tool for the design and management of the network system. The softwares for the water supply engineering applied to the municipal engineering in the world are introduced herein along with the comparison and analysis of both the merits and defects of them, so as to provide some references for the construction and management of the water distribution network in port area and the development of the simulation softwares concerned.

Abstract:Problems of water system integration occur when a model's boundaries are too narrow to capture interactions and feedbacks across the terrestrial water cycle. We propose that integrated water systems models are required to overcome them and are necessary to understand emergent system behaviour, to expand model boundaries, to evaluate interventions, and to ensure simulations reflect stakeholder goals. We present the Water Systems Integrated Modelling framework (WSIMOD) software as one such approach and describe its theoretical basis, covering the node and arc nature of simulations, the integration framework that enables communication between model elements, and the model orchestration to customise interactions. We highlight data requirements for creating such a model and the potential for future development and refinement. WSIMOD offers a flexible and powerful approach to represent water systems, and we hope it will encourage further research and application into using model integration towards achieving sustainable and resilient water management.

Abstract:Nowadays, the structure and properties of water supply system are becoming more and more complex, and modeling is becoming increasingly difficult. In this paper, a data-driven subspace identification method is presented. Firstly, a brief introduction for water supply systems is presented; after that, we get the I/O data through the InfoWorks WS software; at last, a data-driven subspace identification method is applied to get the model. The result of the experiment shows the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Water shortage is one of the major water related problems for many cities in the world. The planning for utilization of reclaimed water has been or would be drafted in these cities. For using the reclaimed water soundly, Beijing planned to build a large scale reclaimed water pipe networks with multi-sources. In order to support the plan, the integrated hydraulic model of planning pipe network was developed based on EPANET supported by geographic information system (GIS). The complicated pipe network was divided into four weak conjunction subzones according to the distribution of reclaimed water plants and the elevation. It could provide a better solution for the problem of overhigh pressure in several regions of the network. Through the scenarios analysis in different subzones, some of the initial diameter of pipes in the network was adjusted. At last the pipe network planning scheme of reclaimed water was proposed. The proposed planning scheme could reach the balances between reclaimed water requirements and reclaimed water supplies, and provided a scientific basis for the reclaimed water utilization in Beijing. Now the scheme had been adopted by Beijing municipal government.
