Abstract:Al-Ti-TiC-CNTs/AZ31 magnesium matrix composites (MMCs) were prepared using laser cladding (LC) and high speed friction stir processing (HS-FSP). The surface microstructure, phase composition, microhardness distribution and corrosion resistance of the MMCs were studied using scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), microhardness tester and electrochemical workstation. The composite layers were composed of phases with different geometric morphology and distribution characteristics identified as α-Mg, Al12Mg17 and TiC phases. A defect-free LC composite layer with refined microstructure and a sound metallurgical bonding interface between the LC composite layer and the matrix were observed. In addition to maintaining the sound metallurgical bonding interface, the microstructure of the LC composite layer was significantly refined and densified after being subjected to HS-FSP. The surface microhardness and self-corrosion potential of the MMCs prepared using LC was obviously enhanced due to the formation of a large number of Al12Mg17 and TiC phases, but they show a decreasing trend with decreasing the Al12Mg17 and TiC phases. The MMCs produced using HS-FSP exhibited higher surface microhardness and better corrosion properties than those of the LC due to the formation of finer and denser microstructure and higher numbers of Al12Mg17 and TiC phases in the composite layers.

Abstract:A novel technique based on laser-induced chemical reduction of metal salts has been developed to produce surface coatings on metal-matrix composites (MMCs). The substrate is predeposited with a paste, containing concentrated salts of the elements to be coated along with a thickening agent, and then subjected to high power laser radiation. The rise in surface temperature during laser irradiation led to the decomposition of salts to their native metals. The combination of metal and metalloid elements in the reaction zone forms an amorphous layer due to the specific chemical ratio and rapid cooling rate. The thickness of the coatings obtained were of the order of 50–100 μm. The coatings exhibited amorphous and microcrystalline structures, possessed hardness in the range of 300–1700 Hv (substrate hardness 80–90 Hv), had superior sliding wear resistance and excellent corrosion resistance. The advantages of this process include the formation of complex coatings on MMCs by a simple, versatile technique which does not require any vacuum or inert atmosphere.

Abstract:Magnesium (Mg) metals have been widely used in various fields as one of the most promising lightweight structural materials. However, the low corrosion resistance and poor mechanical properties restrict its applications. Surface treatments are common approach to enhance the mechanical strength and corrosion resistance of Mg metals. Among them, laser surface treatment generates novel tissues and structures in situ on the sample surface, thereby improving properties of mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. We briefly describe the changes in surface organization that arise after laser treatment of Mg surfaces, as well as the creation of structures such as streaks, particles, holes, craters, etc., and provide an overview of the reasons for the alterations. The effect of laser processing on wettability, hardness, friction wear, degradation, biocompatibility and mechanical properties were reviewed. At last, the limitations and development trend of laser treatment on Mg metals research were further pointed out.

Abstract:Laser cladding provides a widely applicable method for the preparation of metallic glass matrix composite (MGMC) coatings, where the mechanical property and the corrosion resistance can be tailored by the in-suit precipitated crystalline phases. Thus, the investigation on the microstructure evolution and corrosion mechanism of MGMC coating to achieve superior performance is of great importance. In the presented work, Zr50.7Cu28Ni9Al12.3 MGMC coatings, which are constituted by Zr&Cu enriched dendrites and Ni&Al enriched metallic glass (MG) matrix, were prepared by laser cladding. The effect of the laser power on the microstructure and the corrosion property of the MGMC coatings was investigated. It has been found that the MG content increases and the size of the dendrites decreases with decreasing laser power. Increasing MG content in the coating can decrease the self-etching current density due to the rapid surface oxidation, and decrease the open-circuit-potential due to the higher chemical activity of MG. Besides that, a probable corrosion mechanism of the Zr-Cu-Ni-Al MGMC coating in the NaCl solution was proposed. The segregation of Cu could be the main inducement for pitting. The increasing MG phase content can suppress the segregation of Cu and therefore increase the pitting corrosion resistance of the coating.

Abstract:Laser cladding provides a powerful method for the preparation of metallic glass matrix composite (MGMC) coatings, while the microstructure evolution and the detailed characterization of the coating structure still need further investigation. In the present work, Zr–Cu–Ni–Al MGMC coatings were prepared by laser cladding. The coatings are constituted by Zr&Cu enriched dendrites and Ni&Al enriched metallic glass (MG) matrix. The microstructure evolution and corrosion-resistance of the coatings were investigated. Fine crystalline phases were observed in partial area of the MG matrix, which breaks the conventional thought that the matrix with no contrast in SEM is of fully amorphous phase. The prepared Zr–Cu–Ni–Al MGMC coatings exhibit obvious passivation phenomena and enhanced corrosion-resistance. This work provides a novel insight into the microstructure of the MGMC coatings.

Abstract:Recent developments of laser surface modification of titanium alloys for increasing their corrosion, wear and oxidation resistance are introduced. The effects of laser processing parameters on the resulting surface properties of titanium alloys are reviewed. The problems to be solved and the prospects in the field of laser modification of Ti alloys are discussed. Due to the intrinsic properties, a laser beam can be focused onto the metallic surface to produce a broad range of treatments depending on the input energy. Thus, composite strengthening coatings can be fabricated by the methods of laser alloying, cladding, pulse laser deposition (PLD), etc., which are promising techniques of producing a layer of new materials on the surface of titanium alloys.

Abstract:The properties of metal matrix composites(MMCs) can be tailored by changing the matrix compositions,the shape and type of reinforcements.Among the design of MMCs,the control of interfacial conditions is the key point.In this paper,the research progress on the control of MMCs interfaces has been reviewed,including the inhibition of harmful interfacial reaction in Cf/Al composite and generation of self-lubricating interface in TiB2/Al composite by process control;the control of harmful interfacial reactions in SiC/Al and Cf/Al composites by matrix alloying;the obtaining of W/Cu solid solution interface.It has been proven that the process control and matrix alloying are simple,effective and low-cost methods to avoid harmful interfaces and acquire beneficial interfaces by suppressing the thermodynamics process.
STUDY ON WEAR RESISTANCE OF LASER CALDDING Fe-BASED COMPOSITE COATINGS REINFORCED BY IN-SITU MULTIPLE CARBIDE PARTICLES

Abstract:Particle reinforced metal matrix composites (PR-MMCs) have attracted extensive investigation in material science and engineering. They combine both strength and toughness and show excellent properties such as good wear resistance, corrosion resistance and high temperature properties. Laser depositing of metal matrix composite coatings containing in-situ carbide particles is a research focus in laser surface processing. The essential advantage of the in-situ synthesis technology is that the reinforcements are much more compatible with the matrix and the interface between the reinforcements and the matrix is much cleaner. It has a special advantage in high distribution density and dimension uniformity to in-situ synthesize particles by laser melting precursor powders containing several strong carbide-forming elements (SCFEs) rather than one. Each SCFE has significant effects on the precipitation and distribution of the carbide particles. To investigate the microstructure and properties of the cladded layers, in this paper, the coatings were produced by laser cladding powders containing 2%Ti, 1%Ti+1%Zr and 1%Ti+1%Zr+10%WC (mass fraction) respectively on the surface of a medium carbon steel. The microstructure of the coatings and the carbide particles were studied by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results show that the microstructure of the coatings is typically hypo-eutectic. The in-situ particles have a TiC structure with high content of Zr or W when 1%Ti+1%Zr and 1%Ti+1%Zr+10%WC are added into the cladded powders. Therefore, they are multiple carbides. The interface between the particle and the base material is strong. The optimized distribution of the particles with high distribution density (2x10(4) mm(-2)) and high dimension uniformity (about 1 mu m) are obtained when 1%Ti+1%Zr+10%WC are added. The wear resistance of the coating was tested through ring-on-block wear experiment. It is indicated that laser cladding Fe-based composite coating reinforced by in-situ multiple carbide particles presents excellent wear resistance.
Interface engineering in CF/Al matrix composites for enhancement in mechanical strength and anti-corrosion properties

Abstract:Metal matrix composites (MMCs), renowned for their lightweight and exceptional mechanical properties, are currently in high demand. Herein, carbon fiber‐aluminum metal matrix composites (CF/Al MMCs) modified with 4 types of corrosion-barrier interface coatings (CBCs), respectively, including Ni, TiO 2 , ZnO, and Al 2 O 3 were investigated, and the composites were prepared by squeeze casting technique. The effects of these CBCs on the CF/Al interface reaction and the mechanical properties and electrochemical corrosion resistance of the composites are revealed and discussed thoroughly. It is observed that T300‐carbon fiber reinforced MMCs without any CBCs exhibit low mechanical strength due to the formation of Al 4 C 3 phase induced by strong interaction between fiber and matrix. With CBCs, the formation of Al 4 C 3 was significantly suppressed. Comparatively, the ZnO-coated CF/Al MMCs exhibit the most remarkable enhancement in the mechanical properties with a flexural strength of 796.4 MPa and a modulus of 105.3 GPa, which are approximately 114% and 52.2% higher than those of the counterparts without CBCs, respectively. More importantly, the CF/Al MMCs with CBCs demonstrate superior chemical corrosion resistance, retaining their mechanical performance even after a 7-day immersion in salt solutions. These results provide an important guideline in interface engineering for MMCs with enhanced mechanical properties and electrochemical corrosion resistance.

Abstract:Metal substrates are widely used in engineering production. However, material life reduction and economic loss due to chemical and electrochemical corrosion are a major problem facing people. Electrochemical corrosion is the main corrosion mode of metals, such as seawater corrosion. It is found that the superhydrophobic surface treated by laser texturing plays an important role in the corrosion resistance of the substrate, with the laser texturing process and post-treatment affecting the corrosion resistance. The corrosion resistance is positively correlated with the superhydrophobic property of the surface. For the mechanism of corrosion resistance, this paper summarizes the effect of micro-nano structure, surface-modified coating, oxidation layer or new product layer, surface inhomogeneity, crystal structure, and slippery surface on corrosion resistance. Superhydrophobic surface and slippery surface are two common types of bioinspired, special wetting surfaces. In order to prepare better superhydrophobic and corrosion-resistant surfaces, this paper summarizes the selection and optimization of laser parameters, surface structure, processing media, and post-treatment from the point of view of mechanism and law. In addition, after summarizing the corrosion resistance mechanism, this paper introduces a series of characterization experiments that can measure the corrosion resistance, providing a reference for preparation and evaluation of the surface.

Laser Producing Particulate Reinforced Fe-based MMC Coatings and Industrial Applications

Abstract:This paper presents the research achievements on Fe-based metal matrix composite coatings (MMC) on steel and iron substrates by laser alloying and laser cladding and their industrial applications. The high carbon-equivalent design ensures the good formability and high hardness while eliminates hot cracking during rapid solidification. The jointly adding of strong-carbide-formation-elements promotes the precipitation of large quantity of hard particles. The typical microstructure of the MMC coating characterizes about 4000∼5000/mm2 carbide particles (1∼3 micron in diameter) homogeneously precipitated on iron-base matrix. The average hardness of the coating reaches up to Hv0.2 950∼1050. Tribological test proved that this particulate reinforced Fe-based MMC coating posses excellent wear resistance and couple ability with various different frictional counterparts as well as remarkable decrease of the friction coefficient. Its grain-abrasion resistance is better than that of the plasma sprayed Mo coating and its adhesive-abrasion resistance better than the chromium coating. This MMC coating also demonstrated unique corrosion resistance and contact-fatigue resistance. This particulate reinforced MMC coatings have been successfully applied in rock arms, cam shafts, piston rings of engine, plunger pistons and kerf of cutting knives.

Abstract:One of the most significant classes of engineering materials in the modern period is Metal Matrix Composites(MMCs). In recent years, MMCs have attracted a lot of attention. MMCs are displacing traditional metallic materials in the automobile and aerospace industries owing to their numerous advantageous characteristics, which include low weight, high specific strength, good wear resistance, enhanced resistance to creep, etc. MMCs aid in improving the functionality of industrial parts without adding extra weight to the system. Despite the fact that several distinct types of MMCs have been created over the years, aluminum and magnesium MMCs have emerged as the most promising materials in the aerospace and automotive fields due to their improved tribological performance, low weight, and excellent mechanical properties. However, there are a number of factors that are divided into three categories that affect the tribological behavior of these MMCs, including the reinforcement material (volume fraction, reinforcement type, shape), the operating conditions (sliding speed, normal load), and the environmental conditions (relative humidity and temperature). This study seeks to give a thorough review of the history, categorization, materials, and applications in many fields, as well as the distinct tribological and corrosion behavior of the Al/Mg MMCs under various situations. To pave the way for future researchers working in these sectors, it also outlines the methods and properties used in the study.
Effect of Laser Surface Treatment on the Corrosion Resistance of Zircaloy-4 at High Temperature

Abstract:A 700 V pulsed laser was used for the surface treatment of Zircaloy-4. Phases including the treatment layer, morphology and the distributions of alloying elements of the treatment layer were detected via X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The results showed that the laser surface treatment (LST) layer is also α-Zr phase layer, the morphology of the treatment layer was “cauliflower-like” and the Fe-Cr precipitates in the LST layer were dissolved. The corrosion tests of the LST and the no-laser surface treatment (NLST) specimens were conducted in steam at 1100 °C using TGA (NETZSCH STA 449 F). The results showed that LST can enhance the corrosion resistance of the Zircaloy-4 in high-temperature steam. More microcracks distributed in the oxide film formed on the NLST specimen than on the LST specimen. And the volume fraction of the tetragonal zirconia (t-ZrO2) phase in the oxide film on the surface of the LST specimen was higher than that of NLST specimen. The main reason for this phenomena could be attributed to the dissolving Fe-Cr precipitates and higher solid solution of Fe and Cr in the laser treatment layer.
Effect of laser surface texture on the adhesion performance of CFRP/Mg laminates

Abstract:To investigate the enhancement mechanism and effect of laser treatment on the performance of an interface between a carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer and magnesium (CFRP/Mg), finite element simulations and experiments were conducted to demonstrate the macroscopic and microscopic failure processes of the laser-treated interface. Based on the high controllability of the groove parameters in laser machining, the quantitative relationship between the texture parameters and the shear properties of the CFRP/Mg interface was analyzed. In addition, shear tests and simulations of the laser-treated interfaces with different groove parameters were performed. Increasing the groove depth and decreasing the groove spacing effectively improved the shear strength of the CFRP/Mg interface. In addition, the reliability of the interface cohesion parameters obtained using the representative volume element model was verified by experiments and simulations, which is important for the application of laser technology to composite laminates.

Abstract:Laser micromelting (LMM) technology allows for the remelting of pre-positioned coatings on the surface of a specimen to form a metallurgical bond with the substrate material, significantly improving the coating's film–base bond. However, the high energy input from the laser modification process can cause severe element diffusion, rendering the coating susceptible to deformation and cracking. This can be mitigated by controlling the laser power, scanning speed, and offset of the LMM process. The temperature and stress fields of the samples in the LMM process were analyzed via finite element simulation. The effects of the LMM process parameters on the coating morphology were analyzed in conjunction with experiments. The results indicated that the laser power significantly affected the morphology of the coating after remelting, and a higher scanning speed was more likely to cause the coating to accumulate stress. Additionally, a smaller offset inhibited crack generation. At a laser power of 30 W, a scanning speed of 1200 mm/min, and a scanning spacing of 0.035 mm, the surface of the coating had no obvious defects and was relatively flat, and the adhesion and corrosion resistance were significantly improved. This study provides valuable guidance for improving the preparation of micron-sized protective coatings on Zr alloy surfaces.

Abstract:Fe901/Al2O3 metal matrix composite (MMC) coatings were deposited on the surface of 45 steel via electromagnetic field (EF)-assisted laser cladding technology. The influences of EF on the microstructure, phase composition, microhardness, and wear resistance of the Fe901/Al2O3 MMC coating were investigated. The generated Lorentz force (FL) and Joule heating due to the application of EF had a positive effect on wear resistance. The results showed that FL broke up the columnar dendrites. Joule heating produced more nuclei, resulting in the formation of fine columnar dendrites, equiaxed dendrites, and cells. The EF affected the content of hard phase in the coatings while it did not change the phase composition of the coating, because the coatings with and without EF assistance contained (Fe, Cr), (Fe, Cr)7C3, Fe3Al, and (Al, Fe)4Cr phases. The microhardness under 20 mT increased by 84.5 HV0.2 compared to the coating without EF due to the refinement of grains and the increased content of hard phase. Additionally, the main wear mechanism switched from adhesive wear to abrasive wear.

Abstract:This study aimed to examine the impact of laser surface melting (LSM) pretreatment on the wear and corrosion resistance of micro-arc oxidation (MAO) ceramic coatings on AZ31B magnesium alloy. LSM pretreatment was conducted using laser beams with energy densities of 30 J·mm-2, 90 J·mm-2, and 150 J·mm-2, followed by the preparation of MAO ceramic coatings using a bipolar pulse mode. The electrical signals during the MAO process were measured using Hall sensors, while the morphology, structure, elemental composition, and phase composition of the samples were assessed using field emission scanning electron microscopy and other characterization methods. The frictional properties of the coatings were determined using a Multi-Functional Tribometer, and electrochemical tests were conducted in a 3.5% NaCl solution. The results indicated that the main phase grains of the substrate were significantly refined after LSM pretreatment. The primary phase composition of the ceramic coatings comprised MgO and SiO2. In comparison to untreated samples, the samples pretreated with 150 J·mm-2 energy density exhibited the weakest capacitance effect during the MAO growth process, resulting in the highest quality MAO ceramic coatings. Specifically, these samples displayed a reduction in average pore area to 0.84 μm2, a decrease in porosity of 7.14%, a 50% reduction in wear rate, a two orders of magnitude decrease in corrosion current density, and a one order of magnitude increase in polarization resistance.

Abstract:To deepen the research on the surface treatment technology of bonding matrix of composite materials, carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) was selected as the research object, and the research status at home and abroad were reviewed from three aspects: matrix characteristics, durability and bonding and stripping effect before and after surface treatment. Because of the effects of existing surface treatments on the surface roughness, surface wettability, surface morphology, fatigue characteristics, shear strength, and tensile section morphology of CFRP, the influence mechanism of surface treatments on the bonding properties of CFRP was summarized, and the future research focus and direction prospected. The results show that the bonding effect depends on the good mechanical interlocking and adsorption/chemical bonding between the adhesive and CFRP surface. The surface treatment can remove the surface pollutants of CFRP, optimize the surface topography characteristics, and enhance the spreading ability of the adhesive on the substrate surface, thereby enhancing the bonding ability between CFRP and the adhesive. The combination of different surface treatments can significantly improve the preparation quality of the CFRP surface, and avoid the defects of the single surface treatment itself to a certain extent. The surface treatment technology of the bonding matrix is developing in the direction of precision, refinement, and accuracy.

Abstract:Metal matrix ceramic composites (MMCs) are widely applied materials in surface engineering due to their high hardness and excellent wear resistance. Recently, various MMCs have been successfully fabricated by a promising method named direct laser deposition. In this work, nickel-based hard surface coatings reinforced with multiple in-situ phases were deposited by wide-band laser. The strengthened phases were synthesized by varied content of Ti and B4C precursor powders. The microstructure evolution, phase constitution and mechanical properties of the designed coatings were investigated. Results indicated the B4C were decomposed and free C and B atoms were released in a molten pool. Multiple secondary phases such as TiC, Cr7C3, Cr23C6, TiB and CrB were in-situ synthesized. As the content of precursor Ti and B4C powders increased, the microstructure of the laser-clad coatings was greatly refined due to the plentiful in-situ phases. Mechanical properties of the coatings revealed the maximum elastic modulus and microhardness reached 247 and 7.18 GPa in the experiment group. Friction tests indicated the average friction coefficient of optimized coating was about 0.50.
