Abstract:In this article, an investigation on the thermal property, liquid‐metal‐induced embrittlement crack, coating layer morphology, microstructure, and hardness of Zn‐coated hot‐stamping steel is analyzed. Fracture mechanism of substrate, coating layer, and welding spot is studied in detail. Inclusion is detected and researched. The effect of forming temperature, forming stain, and strain rate on the properties is studied. An investigation on the thermal property, fracture mechanism of substrate and coating layer, liquid‐metal embrittlement (LME) crack, coating layer morphology, microstructure, and hardness of Zn‐coated hot‐stamping steel is presented. The effect of forming temperature on the LME is studied. The crack mechanism of substrate at elevated temperature is ductile fracture with various‐sized dimples. The inclusions in the dimples are also detected and researched. However, the fracture mechanism of coating layer and weld spot is different from that of substrate. At high temperature, the liquid Zn invades into the substrate with oxidation reaction, which reduces the thermal formability. The complex chemical reaction and different phase formation occur in the coating layer. The coating layer breaks and peels off from the substrate with sharp edge, indicating brittle fracture. The phase of substrate mainly transforms into martensite phase with the microhardness Vickers hardness 0.2 of 410–490.

Abstract:It is found that the surface defect like black stripes appeared in certain surface regions of die-casting wheel hub AM60B magnesium alloy after acid pickling in the anti-corrosion treatment.The microstructure and composition were observed by means of stereomicroscopy,metallomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy combined with energy spectrum analysis.The formation mechanism of the defect was discussed.The results show that the microstructure and composition on the edge of die casting AM60B magnesium alloy are nonhomogeneous.Such nonhomogeneity is attributed to the crack which originates under stress at later solidification is feeded by surrounding low melting point Al-rich molten metal.Al-rich molten metal contains certain content of low potential element Mg,and local galvanic cell is formed between Mg and ambient composition in corrosive environment.Mg is selective corroded accordingly.The ambient composition around the crack is easier to be eroded for a great deal of high potential eutectic structure existing at the same time crack,ultimately forming the morphology of black stripes.

Abstract:In this work, a novel zinc–aluminum–magnesium (Zn-Al-Mg, ZM) coated steel was prepared using the hot-dip method. The microstructure and corrosion resistance of the ZM-coated steel were investigated. Compared to the conventional galvanized steel (GI), the ZM coating demonstrated a distinctive phase structure, consisting of Zn phase, binary eutectic (Zn/MgZn2), and ternary eutectic (Zn/Al/MgZn2). The corrosion resistance of the ZM-coated and GI-coated steels was evaluated by neutral salt spray test (NSST), polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results indicated that ZM-coated steel provided superior long-term corrosion protection in a NaCl environment compared to GI-coated steel. The scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) proved to be an effective method for investigating the evolution of the anodic and cathodic on the local coating surface. GI-coated steel exhibited a potential and current density distribution between the cathodic and anodic sites nearly three orders of magnitude higher than that of ZM-coated steel, suggesting a higher corrosion rate for GI-coated steel.

Abstract:Grain boundary wetting as a preliminary stage for zinc induced grain boundary weakening and embrittlement in a Zn coated press hardened 20MnB8 steel was analyzed by means of electron backscatter diffraction, Auger electron spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, atom probe tomography and transmission electron microscopy on the nanometer scale. Microcracks at prior austenite grain boundaries were observed and structures that developed after microcrack formation were identified. Zn/Fe intermetallic phases with grain sizes smaller than 100 nm in diameter are present at the crack surfaces and at the wedge-shaped crack tips. In order to get a complete picture, including the microstructure before cracking, an undeformed, electrolytically coated reference sample which underwent the same heat treatment as the press hardened material was investigated. Here, Zn, in the order of one atomic layer or less, could be found along prior austenite grain boundaries several micrometers away from the actual Zn/Fe phases in the coating. Such a grain boundary weakening by Zn wetting of prior austenitic grain boundaries during austenitization and/or hot forming is a necessary condition for microcrack formation.

Abstract:The microstructure of the 95wt%Zn-2.3wt%Al-2.7wt%Mg bulk alloy used for hot-dip galvanization has been investigated by TEM and SEM. The alloy exhibits a multi-scales and multi-phases microstructure. The dendrite and the granular/lamellar region are observed at hundreds-micron scale, and each has finer details. The dendrite is composed of the coarse hcp-Zn grains, with MgZn2 grains between the branches, and some individual bulk MgZn2. The granular/lamellar region has a complex ternary eutectic morphology, containing the hcp-Zn lamellas, the monotectoid product of Al-bubble wrapping Zn-granule, and the Zn-Mg lamellas, and the dimension of every unit is less than 1μm. The hcp-Zn phase, in the form of coarse grains and lamellas, is supersaturated, with numerous platelet Al precipitation about tens of nanometers inside, with the orientation relationship of (0 0 1)Al//(0 0 0 1)Zn, and [1 1 0]Al near 112¯0Zn. The Zn-Mg lamella is a MgZn2 matrix with polygon Mg2Zn11 precipitates less than 100nm and some Mg segregations.

Abstract:Cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry were performed in conjunction with SEM technique to study the electroplating process of Zn–Fe alloys. The technological parameters for Zn–Fe electroplating have been optimized and the smooth Zn–Fe coatings with high corrosion resistances were obtained. The results also show that, under our experimental conditions, the deposition of Zn–Fe behaved anomalously and followed the mechanism of three-dimensional (3D) nucleation. With the increase of deposition potential, the grain growth changed from progressive to instantaneous. Meanwhile, a new viewpoint was proposed to explain the anomalous co-deposition behavior of Zn–Fe coatings.
Corrosion Properties of Steel Sheet with Zinc-Base Alloy Coatings

Abstract:Steel sheets with three kinds of zinc alloy coatings, that is, pure zinc coating, Galfan coating and Zn-Al-Mg coating, were hot-dipping galvanized by a hot-dip process simulator (HDPS). Alloying elements content as mass percent in the three coatings is Zn-0.2%Al, Zn-5%Al and Zn-2%Al-2%Mg, respectively. Corrosion behavior of the steel sheets with zinc-base alloy coating was studied by total immersion test. Corrosion resistance of the zinc-base alloy coatings dipped with different times was analyzed by means of electrochemical measurement and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. The results show that the Zn-Al-Mg coating has the largest corrosion current density at the early stage of immersion. Along with increasing immersing time, corrosion current density of the Zn-Al-Mg decreases but that of the pure zinc coating and the Galfan coating increases. For the Galfan coating, diffusion characteristics could be found for the Nyquist curve, which means higher corrosion rate. However, for the Zn-Al-Mg coating, limited diffusion characteristics could be found for the Nyquist curve, which means corrosion product covered the surface enhances the corrosion resistance.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, the instability mechanism of the Fe-Al inhibition layer produced by the interfacial reaction in the Al-containing zinc melts on the hydrogen-reduced steel is studied in detail. The results show that the surface morphology of hydrogen-reduced hot-rolled steel at different temperatures is mainly divided into porous and dense states. Due to the different surface activity of the steel after hydrogen reduction, the reaction degree of the galvanized interface is also significantly different. When the Al content is 0.2 wt%, no Fe-Al inhibition layer is detected at the interface. After that, the influence of Al content on the interface inhibition layer was explored. The research results showed that under the same reduction temperature and inhibition time, the higher the Al content, the more obvious the inhibition layer formed at the interface. Finally, by extending the dipping time, it was confirmed that the Fe-Al inhibition layer had undergone a destabilization and cracking transformation process, that is, the zinc solution permeated the Fe-Al inhibition layer, and the iron interface and the liquid zinc were in direct contact, resulting in the formation of the Fe-Zn outburst structure, which was also aggravated the process of breaking the Fe-Al inhibition layer.

Abstract:Abstract Hot dip galvanized steel sheet is widely used in the automotive field because of its advantages of low cost, thick hot dip galvanized layer, reducing body defects, improving vehicle performance, and beautifying surface appearance. However, the zinc slag defects on the surface of the steel plate significantly reduce the surface quality of the steel plate. In this paper, the morphology of zinc slag on the surface of a pure hot-dip galvanized steel sheet was analyzed by scanning electron microscope. The results showed that the zinc slag defects on the surface of pure hot-dip galvanized steel strip was round, and the size was large, about 700 um. By adjusting the air knife pressure, the aluminum content in the zinc tank, and the opening of the RCS fan, the number and size of zinc slag defects on the surface of pure hot-dip galvanized steel strip can be significantly reduced. As a result, the steel plate was improved.

Abstract:A Zn alloy coating with submicron phases was fabricated on magnesium alloys by a novel hot-dip process, exhibiting excellent corrosion resistance. The microstructure and phases of coatings were characterized and their correlation with the corrosion performance was investigated. The results indicated that the coating immersed in Zn-3Mg molten bath for 4 s primarily consisted of submicron dot-like Zn phases with well-ordered distribution, while the coating immersed in Zn-3Mg molten bath for 7 s mainly comprised rod-like compact MgZn 2 phases with a scattered distribution of Zn phase. The presence of these fine phases of coatings effectively impeded ion permeation in corrosive environments, leading to a significant enhancement in corrosion resistance. Notably, the exceptional corrosion resistance of the coating immersed for 4 s can be attributed to the submicron Zn phase with a grain size of 0.51 μm, resulting in a 62-fold increase in low-frequency impedance value compared to the AZ31 alloy, and a 22-fold decrease in corrosion rate compared to the AZ31 alloy.

Abstract:A new hot-dip galvanizing method was employed on hot-rolled low carbon steel. The effects of Al contents on microstructure, micro-hardness and corrosion resistance of Zn-Al alloy coatings were systematically investigated. Phase composition, microstructure and element distribution in Zn-Al alloy coatings were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron probe micro analysis (EPMA), respectively. It is found that Al content (0.6–6. 0 wt. %) in galvanizing zinc affects surface quality and adhesion between coatings and matrix in the newly developed method. In addition, with increasing Al content, micro-hardness significantly increased due to the increase in Zn-Al eutectoid phases. Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) also revealed that increase in Al plays a noticeable role in improving the corrosion resistance of Zn-Al alloy coatings.

Abstract:Effects of steel alloying elements on the formation of the surface oxide layer of hot-dip galvanized press hardened steel after austenitization annealing were examined with various advanced microscopy and spectroscopy techniques. The main oxides on top of the original thin Al2O3 layer, originating from the primary galvanizing process, are identified as ZnO and (Mn,Zn)Mn2O4 spinel. For some of the investigated steel alloys, a non-uniform, several nanometer thick Cr enriched, additional film was found at the Al2O3 layer. At a sufficiently high concentration, Cr can act as a substitute for Al during annealing, strengthening and regenerating the original Al2O3 layer with Cr2O3. Further analysis with secondary ion mass spectrometry allowed a reliable distinction between ZnO and Zn(OH)2.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of dipping time (30, 60, 90, 120, 150 s) on the microstructure and corrosion resistance of Zn-1Al-2Mg coating under ammonium-free flux. The coatings were prepared at different dipping times, and then the microstructure and composition of the coatings were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction and energy spectrometry; The corrosion resistance of the coatings was evaluated through electrochemical polarization test, neutral salt spray test, and full immersion test. The results show that the Zn-Al-Mg coating consists of Zn-rich phase, Zn/Al/MgZn 2 ternary eutectic, Zn/MgZn 2 binary eutectic phase and Fe-Al alloy phase layer; as the dipping time increases, the coating tends to thicken, and after the 90 s, the coating thickens significantly; while the eutectic structure decreases and the Fe-Al alloy phase thickens, Fe in the substrate continuously diffuses toward the growth direction of the coating and reacts with Al precipitated in the coating to form Fe 2 Al 5 Zn x ; The corrosion products in the Zn-Al-Mg coating, specifically Mg 2 CO 3 (OH) 2 ·3H 2 O and MgCO 3 , increase the pH of the environment and thus slow down the rate of corrosion. The corrosion resistance performance varies nonlinearly from good to poor and then improves again with increasing dipping time.

Abstract:Post-mechanical plating heat treatment induces the formation of an iron–zinc (Fe-Zn) rich intermetallic layer between Zn and ZnSn coatings and the substrate. Despite increased outer coating porosity, the corrosion resistance of Zn- and ZnSn-coated steels significantly improves after heat treatment, attributed to the formation of intermetallic phases. This study employs small- and ultra-small-angle neutron scattering (SANS and USANS) to investigate the behavior of mechanically plated Zn and ZnSn coatings pre- and post-heat treatment. In the presence of a relatively thick steel substrate, strong multiple scattering occurs. However, by identifying a specific high Q -range region where multiple scattering is negligible, we reveal small but significant differences. Porod's slopes, denoted as ' n ', are calculated for uncoated steel, and Zn- and ZnSn-coated steels (both with and without heat treatment). These slope values reflect contributions from different interfaces on the particles' surface roughness. Despite the challenges of multiple scattering, our findings offer valuable insights into coatings' behavior. The study lays a foundation for future investigations into coating behavior using SANS/USANS techniques.

Abstract:We investigated the influence of steel surface properties on the wettability of zinc (Zn). Our main objective is to address the selective oxidation of solute alloying elements and enhance the wetting behavior of Zn on advanced high strength steel (AHSS) by employing an aluminum (Al) interlayer through the physical vapor deposition technique. The deposition of an Al interlayer resulted in a decrease in contact angle and an increase in spread width as the molten Zn interacted with the Al interlay on the steel substrate. Importantly, the incorporation of an Al interlayer demonstrated a significant improvement in wettability by substantially increasing the work of adhesion compared to the uncoated AHSS substrate.

Abstract:The effect of solutes, Co, Cu, Cr, Mn, Mo, Nb, Ni, Ta, Ti, V and Zr, in steel on the penetration properties of Zn and stability of surface or matrix were explored theoretically using density functional theory method, and the role of solutes in the Zn-coated surface and Zn-induced transgranular fracture performance was considered. The effect of solution on α-Fe are more obvious than that on γ-Fe, they significantly change surface energy value and the order of stability of low-index surface in α-Fe. The segregation energies of solutes were calculated and concluded that most of selected elements possibly segregate to the surface from the matrix. The study about Zn adsorption properties found that Zn atoms is energetically favorable to absorb at the (001) surface layer in α-Fe, and the segregation of Zr, V, Nb and Ta are helpful to the process of Zn-coating and increase the stability of Zn-coated surface. In addition, the solutes in the matrix increase the difficulty of transgranular fracture. Although the surrounding of solutes is the preference site for cracking occurring and propagation, alloying is found to lead to a general increase in the cleavage energy of α-Fe during Zn penetration, suggesting a reduction in the tendency for transgranular fracture. Therefore, it is feasible that the addition of Zr, V, Nb and Ta as alloy element in steel to improve the properties of Zn-coating and inhibit the occurrence of Zn-inducing transgranular cracking. Our results are helpful to understand and design AHSSs inhibiting LME susceptibility.

Wetting of liquid Zinc-aluminum-magnesium alloy on steel substrate during hot-dipping: Understanding the role of the flux

Abstract:The surface quality of hot-dipping Zn-Al-Mg coatings was significantly influenced by the composition of fluxes. In this study, five different fluxes were chosen and named as F1 (ZnCl2, NH4Cl), F2 (ZnCl2, NaF), F3 (ZnCl2, NH4Cl, KCl), F4 (ZnCl2, NH4Cl, KCl, SnCl2, HCl), and F5 (ZnCl2, NH4Cl, KCl, BiCl3, HCl). Using the sessile drop method, the influence of different fluxes on the wettability between the liquid Zn-Al-Mg alloy and the steel substrate was elucidated. The results showed that: when the flux composition is ZnCl2-NH4Cl-KCl-BiCl3-HCl, a uniform and dense salt film with a protective effect can be formed on the steel substrate, which prevents the oxidation of the steel substrate and removes the harmful reaction products during hot-dipping. By reducing the solid–liquid interface energy, increasing the work of adhesion between the liquid Zn-6Al-3Mg alloy and steel substrate, and shortening the interface reaction time, the strongest wetting effect between the liquid Zn-6Al-3Mg alloy and the steel substrate was achieved. The coating surface quality was the highest after using the F5 flux. Finally, the mechanism of the assistant plating is discussed.

Abstract:Post-mechanical plating heat treatment on zinc and zinc–tin coatings resulted in the formation of an iron–zinc-rich intermetallic layer between the substrate and the coatings, while the outer coating layer became tin-rich in the case of heat-treated zinc–tin coatings. The novel use of grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering detected not only ζ-FeZn 13 , δ 1p -Fe 13 Zn 126 and δ 1k -FeZn 6.67 phases but also Γ 1 -Fe 11 Zn 40 and Γ-Fe 4 Zn 9 phases due to the higher resolution and signal-to-noise ratio of synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) compared to traditional XRD. Microstructure evolution models during the heat treatment of mechanically plated zinc and zinc–tin coatings are proposed. The formation of iron–zinc intermetallic phases was in the sequence of ζ-FeZn 13 , δ 1p -FeZn 10 , δ 1k -FeZn 7 , Γ-Fe 3 Zn 10 and Γ 1 -Fe 5 Zn 21 phases when the heat treatment duration increased.

Anti-corrosion Mechanism of Zn-Mg Alloy Coating on Steel Prepared by Vacuum Evaporation

Abstract:Vacuum evaporation and short-term thermal treatment were used to prepare Mg layer on galvanized steel.Using electrochemical analysis,the corrosion process was studied and the anti-corrosion mechanism was also discussed.The results show that a dense layer forms on the top of zinc layer at the first stage of corrosion.The dense layer consists of magnesium hydroxide,zinc hydroxide and magnesium oxide,and is compact,insoluble and consequently well corrosion resistant.After the dense layer decomposes,the zinc layer as an anode protects steel.
