Experimental study on boiling heat transfer characteristics of RDR-1, R134a, and R1234yf over a wide temperature range and comparative analysis of their system performance

Abstract:In order to accelerate the development of new environmentally friendly refrigerants and achieve substitution for R134a, this study represents the inaugural attempt to comprehensively compare the boiling heat transfer characteristics of a novel environmentally sustainable refrigerant (RDR-1) with R134a and R1234yf through experimental analysis. A horizontal tube with a diameter of 1 mm was established to investigate the impact of various factors on heat transfer properties across a broad range of evaporation temperatures from 243 K to 303 K. The heat flux varied between 15 kW/m2 and 45 kW/m2, while the mass flux ranged from 200 kg/m2s to 400 kg/m2s. Meanwhile, the most appropriate correlation for predicting RDR-1 has been identified. Furthermore, a thorough comparative analysis was conducted to assess the performance of three refrigerants in a variety of refrigeration and heating scenarios across a wide temperature range. The findings indicate that the heat transfer efficiency of RDR-1 is marginally inferior to that of R134a and R1234yf in the low dryness region, but notably superior to R134a and R1234yf in the medium to high dryness region. Overall, compared to R134a and R1234yf, the heat transfer coefficient of RDR-1 can be increased by 12.48 % and 12.5 %, respectively. The predictive method of Kim et al. (2013) has the highest prediction accuracy for RDR-1, with an error of only 20.08 %. Furthermore, in the context of refrigeration and heating, RDR-1 demonstrates superior system performance and cooling capacity compared to R134a and R1234yf. It also exhibits a lower compression ratio than R134a and is particularly well-suited for use in extremely cold conditions.
