Abstract:The migration, enrichment, and crystallization of soluble salt are important reasons for weathering of the Yungang Grottoes. The production in the Datong areas is mainly coal burning. SO 2 easily forms acidic rainfall and becomes a salt solution that passes through the soil and rock mass, enters the grotto, and accumulates on the surface of the grotto. It causes the deterioration of grotto cultural relics because environmental temperature and humidity change repeatedly. Therefore, anti-seepage on the topsoil layer is an important task of the Yungang Grottoes protection project. Bentonite is commonly used as an anti-seepage engineering material because of its low permeability. The loess in the Datong area and bentonite are mixed as a loess-bentonite anti-seepage material. Penetration, expansion, and compression tests under the infiltration of deionized water or salt solution are conducted to study the permeability and deformation characteristics with changes in bentonite content and salt solution concentration. The study indicates that as the bentonite content increases, the permeability coefficient decreases. When the bentonite content reaches 20% or more, the permeability coefficient is stable. The saturated permeability coefficient of the mixture increases linearly with an increase in salt solution concentration and void ratio. When the bentonite content is less than 20%, the mixture can maintain a slightly expanded state. Under the same bentonite content, the expansion ratio decreases with increasing salt solution concentration. Combining the results of these tests and considering economic factors, a mixture with a content of 20% is the optimal dosage.
