Abstract:Aluminum is the world's largest production of non-ferrous metals, with light weight, high specific strength, excellent electrical and thermal conductivity and other characteristics. With the continuous development of aerospace, precision electronic instruments, photovoltaic semiconductors and other emerging strategic industries, the demand for high-performance materials of aluminum alloys has become increasingly strong. This paper reviews the research progress of aluminum alloy melt refinement treatment, summarizes the development history of grain refinement, and evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of various types of refining agents, such as Al–Ti–B, Al–Ti–C, Al–Ti–B/C–Re, etc. The article points out the shortcomings of the current research on the melt refinement treatment of aluminum alloys, and looks forward to the future research direction.

Abstract:Abstract Aluminum and its alloys having lots of advantageous properties are among the most-used metallic materials. So, it is of immense importance to find suitable processes and methods leading to high-quality purified Al melt. In this regard, there are numerous challenges in achieving high purity Al melts, such as its propensity to react with air, oxygen, and water vapor, the presence of a variety of oxide, non-oxide, and solid particle inclusions that lead to the production of pores, cracks, pinholes, and dross, finally adversely influencing the overall quality of the product. The main methods of melt refining are fluxing, floatation, and filtration, but more sophisticated methods have also emerged. The best method for purification can be chosen based on the type of impurities and the desired level of purification. With the industrial development, the need to establish more cost-effective and simpler methods has increased, and in addition, methods should be considered for recycling large volumes of scarp Al parts that contain more impurities. Moreover, achieving high purity melt is also a vital issue for use in specific applications. The present article has been written to discuss the above issues and focus on the study of various methods of aluminum purification.

Abstract:Aluminum, the most produced non-ferrous metal in the world, is highly regarded for its light weight, high specific strength, and excellent thermal conductivity. With the continuous development of aerospace, precision electronics, photovoltaic semiconductors and other emerging strategic industries, the demand for high-performance aluminum alloys is also booming. The paper discusses recent advances in aluminum alloy melt purification, focusing on the development of conventional purification treatment and novel purification treatment of aluminum alloy melt. The advantages and disadvantages of adsorption purification, non-adsorption purification and integrated purification are also summarized. Additionally, the article points out the shortcomings of the current research on aluminum alloy melt purification and gives an outlook on the future research direction.

Abstract:Three kinds of grain refiner Al-Ti-B(wire),Al-Ti-B(ingot),Al-Ti-C were added to the aluminum for refining experiment respectively.Their refining effecting on aluminum was compared.The mechanical properties of the refined pure aluminum were studied with changing the amount of grain refiner.The results show that when the addition amount of grain refiner is 3%,the refinement effect of Al-Ti-B(wire) is best and the refinement effect of Al-Ti-B(ingot) is better than Al-Ti-C.The addition amount of grain refiner on the refining effect has certain influence.When the addition amount from 1% to 10%,with the increase of the addition amount the size of the refined grain becomes smaller at first and then larger.At the same time,there is an optimal addition amount range.With the addition amount of grain refiner increasing,the tensile strength,elongation and hardness of aluminum increases gradually firstly and then decreased gradually.When the addition amount of grain refiner is about 8%,the tensile strength,elongation and hardness of pure aluminum reached maximum value.

Abstract:The manufacture and microstructure of Al-Ti-B master alloys are reviewed.The shortcomings of the reaction of halide salts with molten aluminum to produce Al-Ti-B master alloy are pointed out,and the improvements in the manufacture process and alloy chemistry are believed to be the most effective way to improve both the microstructure and refining performance of Al-Ti-B master alloy.The manufacture of the master alloy under the ultrasound field and development of Al-Ti-B-RE grain refiner will be among the future trends.

Abstract:For aluminum alloys, grain refinement is the most efficient method to improve both strength and ductility. However, this rule may not apply for the recycled Al due to the large amount of intermetallics. In this paper, both secondary dendritic arm spacing (SDAS) and intermetallics have been quantified as a function of grain refinements including traditional AlTiB and most recent Y refiners. Using U-net CNN machine learning algorithm, both Fe-rich intermetallics and eutectic Si have been successfully segmented from optical and SEM/EDS images. Different from traditional refiners, (AlTiB + Y) not only strengthens the refining ability but also reduces the percentage of harmful needle-like Fe-rich intermetallics and transforms flaky Si particles into fibrous morphology. Harvested from the comprehensive grain refiners, SDAS was reduced by 38.9%, the average equivalent diameter of eutectic Si was reduced by 37.9%, and Fe-rich intermetallics content was significantly reduced. In particular, the microstructure improved by AlTiB+ 0.05Y (0.6 wt% AlTiB + 0.3 wt%Y) resulted in an increase in elongation of the refined alloy to 3.9 ± 0.4%, which is 63.3% higher compared to the base alloy, while the UTS remained at the original 260 MPa. This paper offers a promising refining technology for the recycling and casting of Al-Si alloys.

Abstract:With the aim of obtaining a refining flux that is stable and provides effective refining of aluminum melt, a new strategy of designing the flux composition has been proposed. Ten fluxes were designed, by selecting ten molten salt compounds according to their thermophysical parameters, physical properties, and thermodynamic analysis. The melting points of the ten fluxes, and the phases transformation of the fluxes after melting, were studied by DSC and XRD, respectively. The contact angles between four groups of fluxes and alumina at refinement temperatures were studied, and the effect of refinement was characterized by a metallographic microscope. The process of the fluxes removing inclusions and degassing was analyzed thermodynamically. The research findings indicate that flux #10 (11.0 wt.%NaF, 29.5 wt.%NaCl, 46.5 wt.%Na2CO3, 3.0 wt.%CaF2, 10.0 wt.%Na3AlF6) has a melting point (562.2 °C) below the refining temperature. At the refining temperature (760 °C), flux #10 has the lowest contact angle, of 12.78°. In addition, compared to that of flux STJ–A3, currently used in practice, flux #10 has a better refining effectiveness, with the pores and inclusions content of the sample being reduced to 1.11% from 2.96%.

Microstructure Refinement Mechanism of Undercooled Cu55Ni45 Alloys

Abstract:Abstract Different undercooling degrees of Cu55Ni45 alloy were obtained by the combination of molten glass purification and cyclic superheating, and the maximum undercooling degree reached 284 K. The microstructure of the alloy was observed by metallographic microscope, and the evolution of microstructure was studied systematically. There are two occasions of grain refinement in the solidification structure of the alloy: one occurs in the case of low undercooling, and the other occurs in the case of high undercooling. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) technology was used to analyze the rapid solidification structure under high undercooling. The features of flat polygonal grain boundary, high proportion of twin boundary, and large proportion of large angle grain boundary indicate recrystallization. The change in microhardness of the alloy under different undercooling degrees was studied by microhardness tester. It was found that the average microhardness decreased sharply at high undercooling degrees, which further confirmed the recrystallization of the solidified structure at high undercooling degrees.

Study on Grain Refining and Metamorphism of ZL111 Aluminium Alloys

Abstract:Vacuum sintering and ball milling methods were employed in the preparation process of Ti-C grain refinement and the ability of refiners with varying ratios of Ti and C to refine ZL111 crystal grains was tested. The refinement effect of the Ti-C ratios on tensile strength, elongation percentage, Brinell hardness, pro-eutectoid αAl and the size of the Si phase of ZL111, after modification by rare-earth and strontium nitrate, were studied by means of metallographic examination, SEM and mechanical property tests. The results show that there is an obvious increase in the tensile strength and elongation percentage of refined ZL111 with these new Ti and C refiner compounding powders, while Brinell hardness remained more or less constant. The pro-eutectoid αAl is considerably reduced in size and the Si phase shows a finer and rounder structure. The refiner exhibits a good grain refining performance when the Ti-C ratio is 25:1, for Al crystals can favorably easily form nuclei and grow up along the TiC surface thanks to the TiAl3 generated by surplus Ti and Al. The mechanical properties have clearly been improved by the addition of strontium nitrate to ZL111. The effective factors in the modification of mechanical properties of ZL111 are in order of importance: strontium nitrate, Ti-C ratio and rare earth.

Abstract:Refining the α-Al grain size and controlling the morphology of intermetallic phases during solidification of Al alloys using ultrasonic melt processing (USMP) and Al-Ti-B have been extensively used in academic and industry. While, their synergy effect on the formation of these phases has not yet clearly demonstrated. In this paper, the influence of USMP and Al-Ti-B on the solidified microstructure of multicomponent Al-4.5Cu-0.5Mn-0.5Mg-0.2Si-xFe alloys (x = 0.7, and 1.2 wt%) has been comparatively studied. The results show that the USMP + Al-Ti-B method produce a more profound refinement effect than the individual methods. In addition, the area of single Fe-rich phases in both alloys with USMP + Al-Ti-B are also refined compared with conventional methods. A mechanism is proposed for the refinement, which are the deagglomerated TiB 2 parties induced by USMP providing more effective nucleation sites for α-Al, and the refined interdendritic regions limited the growth of Fe-rich phases in the following eutectic reaction. Finally, the application of combined USMP + Al-Ti-B methods is feasible in microstructural refinement, resulting in the improving the casting soundness and mechanical properties of alloys.

Abstract:It comprehensively presents the mechanisms of grain refinement concerning the commercial grain refiner of Al-Ti, Al-B, Al-Ti-B(Ti/B2.22), Al-Ti-B(Ti/B2.22) and Al-Ti-C, which are commonly used in aluminum industry. The mechanisms include peritectic theory, eutectic theory, ternary peritectic theory, ternary eutectic theory, “carbide-boride particle” theory, “clusters of TiC particles” theory, peritectic “hulk” theory, hypernucleation theory, “duplex” nucleation mechanism, and complex eutectic theory, etc. And the validness and defectiveness of the mechanisms are discussed.

Abstract:Some progresses of grain refinement in aluminium field in our group are involved in this paper. We invented a new preparation method of Al-Ti-B grain refiner with the application of high-intensity ultrasound in the preparation reaction. Owing to the optimization of TiB 2 particles morphology in the prepared grain refiner, the commercial purity aluminium grains can be refined as small as 45μm, which is superior to the limiting level of the present commercial grain refiner, 120μm. First-principles calculations on the Al/TiB 2 interface prove that the larger Al/TiB 2 interfacial energy than that between α-Al and aluminium melt is responsible for the poor heterogeneous nucleation of α-Al on TiB 2 particles with only TiB 2 particles in melt. When there is redundant solute Ti in the melt, it is theoretically revealed that the spontaneous segregation of solute Ti on TiB 2 particles plays an important role in the heterogeneous nucleation.
