Abstract:Electromagnetic-circuital-thermal multiphysics simulation is a very important topic in the field of integrated circuits (ICs), microwave circuits, antennas, etc. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the state of the art of electromagnetic-circuital-thermal multiphysics simulation method. Most efforts were focused on electromagnetic-circuital co-simulation and electromagnetic-thermal co-simulation. A brief introduction of related theories like governing equations, numerical methods, and coupling mechanisms is also included.

Abstract:The interactions between melt flow and dendritic growth are a key issue in solidification modeling, because casting and welding processes are usually accompanied by either natural or forced convection. Mathematics models of phase-field coupling convection, numerical computation methods, the applications and advances of phase-field simulation in solidification microstructure are reviewed. The questions to be tackled in the field are pointed out and developing directions in the future are forecasted.

Abstract:In order to quantitively model the real solidification process of industrial multicomponent alloys, a non-isothermal phase field model was studied for multicomponent alloy fully coupled with thermodynamic and diffusion mobility database, which can accurately predict the phase equilibrium, solute diffusion coefficients, specific heat capacity and latent heat release in the whole system. The results show that these parameters are not constants and their values depend on local concentration and temperature. Quantitative simulation of solidification in multicomponent alloys is almost impossible without such parameters available. In this model, the interfacial region is assumed to be a mixture of solid and liquid with the same chemical potentials, but with different composition. The anti-trapping current is also considered in the model. And this model was successfully applied to industrial Al-Cu-Mg alloy for the free equiaxed dendrite solidification process.

Abstract:The phase-field method is an effective means for simulation of solidification microstructure,being the investigation hot spots at home and abroad by now.The application of phase-field method to numerical simulation of solidification propagation process of pure substance is investigated.The simulation of nickel dendritic propagation is performed by means of selecting various overcooling degrees and anisotropic coefficients.Finally,the propagation of side branched crystalline is simulated by employing unbalanced disturbance mode.The simulation result shows that the overcooling degrees and anisotropic intensity should be considered in couples,and there is no effect of unbalanced disturbance on the speed of tip growth during the simulation process.

Abstract:The phase-field model (PFM) is gaining increasing attention in the application of multiphase flows due to its advantages, in which the phase interface is treated as a narrow layer and phase parameters change smoothly and continually at this thin layer. Thus, the construction or tracking of the phase interface can be avoided, and the bulk phase and phase interface can be simulated integrally. PFM provides a useful alternative that does not suffer from problems with either the mass conservation or the accurate computation of surface tension. In this paper, the state of the art of PFM in the numerical modeling and simulation of multiphase flows is comprehensively reviewed. Starting with a brief description of historical developments in the PFM, we continue to take a tour into the basic concepts, fundamental theory, and mathematical models. Then, the commonly used numerical schemes and algorithms for solving the governing systems of PFM in the application of multiphase flows are presented. The various applications and representative results, especially in non-match density scenarios of multiphase flows, are reviewed. The primary challenges and research focus of PFM are analyzed and summarized as well. This review is expected to provide a valuable reference for PFM in the application of multiphase flows.

Abstract:Recent advances in improving the computational efficiency of the phase-field simulations of solidification microstructures are reviewed. The parallel progress of four typical approaches, namely, multigrid, adaptive mesh refinement method, semi-implicit Fourier spectral method, and graphical processing units (GPUs) architecture, is highlighted. Large-scale spatiotemporal simulations are successfully performed to cover essential aspects of multiphysics with the capability of these algorithms. Focus is put on the principles, applications, and comparison of the four algorithms, while solidification theories and discretization methods are outlined.

Abstract:This paper presents an overview of the theories and computer implementation aspects of phase field models (PFM) of fracture. The advantage of PFM over discontinuous approaches to fracture is that PFM can elegantly simulate complicated fracture processes including fracture initiation, propagation, coalescence, and branching by using only a scalar field, the phase field. In addition, fracture is a natural outcome of the simulation and obtained through the solution of an additional differential equation related to the phase field. No extra fracture criteria are needed and an explicit representation of a crack surface as well as complex track crack procedures are avoided in PFM for fracture, which in turn dramatically facilitates the implementation. The PFM is thermodynamically consistent and can be easily extended to multi-physics problem by 'changing' the energy functional accordingly. Besides an overview of different PFMs, we also present comparative numerical benchmark examples to show the capability of PFMs.

Abstract:Phase-field method, as a powerful and popular approach to predict the mesoscale microstructure evolution in various materials science, provides a bridge from atomic-scale methods to the macroscale and has been widely used at an ever-increasing rate. This paper aims to briefly review the origin, basic idea, and development of phase-field models in a historical manner. The focus is placed on the classical and state-of-the-art applications in China, including liquid–solid, solid–solid, gas–solid, ferroelectrics/ferromagnetics phase transformation, and crack propagation-fracture. After introducing the academic activities in the phase-field community in China, some suggestions for the future development directions of phase-field method are finally mentioned.

Abstract:Complex fluid–solid systems generally exist in process engineering. The cognition of complex flow systems depends on numerical and experimental methods. The computational fluid dynamics–discrete phase method simulation based on coarsening technology has potential application prospects in industrial-scale equipment. This review outlines the computational fluid dynamics–discrete phase method and its application in several typical types of process engineering. In the process research, more attention is paid to the dense condition and multiphase flow. Furthermore, the CFD-DPM and its extension method for comprehensive hydrodynamics modeling are introduced. Subsequently, the current challenges and future trends of the computational fluid dynamics–discrete phase method are proposed.

Abstract:Complex dendritic structures can be simulated directly by phase field method. However, phase field method needs a very fine mesh computing and memory requirements. A new calculation method named zone partitioning sequential calculation method is proposed to expand the simulation area of phase field method. The simulation area can be divided into several parts, and the parts can be calculated one by one in a certain order by the new method. This new method can reduce the computing and memory requirements of single calculation, because a part of the simulation area is less than the whole simulation area. Although this method could make error in the interface of different parts of the simulation area when the grains go through the interface, but the error has less effect on the grain growth. By using phase field method, coupled with zone partitioning sequential calculation method, the simulation of the directional solidification process of Al-Cu binary alloy is operated. The results show that the new method can be applied to phase field simulation of binary alloy solidification in a large area. The simulation results have certain accuracy and reliability.

Abstract:The application of finite element simulation method of micromechanics in the field of multi-phase materials is promoted by the extensive use of multi-phase materials and the development of computer technology.The application status of finite element simulation of micromechanics in multi-phase materials is introduced.The 2D and 3Dfinite element calculation methods of micromechanics are summarized.Some major achievements obtained by adopting finite element simulation of micromechanics in the research of composites and steel materials are highlighted.Currently,the application of finite element simulation of micromechanics in the field of multi-phase steels is relatively less,thus the research and development related to it are briefly reviewed and envisaged.

Abstract:The phase-field model (PFM) represents the crack geometry in a diffusive way without introducing sharp discontinuities. This feature enables PFM to effectively model crack propagation compared with numerical methods based on discrete crack model, especially for complex crack patterns. Due to the involvement of \phased field", phase-field method can be essentially treated a multifield problem even for pure mechanical problem. Therefore, it is supposed that the implementation of PFM based on a software developer that especially supports the solution of multifield problems should be more effective, simpler and more efficient than PFM implemented on a general finite element software. In this work, the authors aim to devise a simple and efficient implementation of phase-field model for the modelling of quasi-static and dynamic fracture in the general purpose commercial software developer, COMSOL Multiphysics. Notably only the tensile stress induced crack is accounted for crack evolution by using the decomposition of elastic strain energy. The width of the diffusive crack is controlled by a length-scale parameter. Equations that govern body motion and phase-field evolution are written into different modules in COMSOL, which are then coupled to a whole system to be solved. A staggered scheme is adopted to solve the coupled system and each module is solved sequentially during one time step. A number of 2D and 3D examples are tested to investigate the performance of the present implementation. Our simulations show good agreement with previous works, indicating the feasibility and validity of the COMSOL implementation of PFM.

Abstract:The Phase Field Method stands as a promising technique for modeling complex two-phase and multi-phase flow systems, with the advective Cahn-Hilliard equation adept at capturing the evolution of intricate interfacial structures. However, achieving simulation accuracy necessitates the preservation of the diffuse interface profile, which is often challenged by the convection term within the Cahn-Hilliard equation, leading to deviations from the equilibrium interface state. To address this challenge, we introduce an innovative approach aimed at iteratively restoring the equilibrium interface profile after each time step. This method combines a level-set profile-corrected equation with an algebraic relation between the phase field and the signed distance function, resulting in a preservation equation that relies on the phase-field-related signed distance function rather than the phase field function itself. Quantitative computational tests affirm the effectiveness of this approach in minimizing discretization errors, reducing dependence on the numerical P é clet number, and improving mass conservation accuracy for each phase, all while reducing computational time by approximately 20-fold due to the coarser grid used. Validation through simulations across various scenarios demonstrates the approach's reliability, with results closely aligning with analytical solutions, prior numerical findings, and experimental data, thereby underscoring the efficacy and precision of our proposed approach.

Abstract:The discrete element method (DEM) and the moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method are the most popular mesh-free particle methods in the discontinuum and continuum. This paper describes a state-of-the-art modeling on multi-phase flows using these mesh-free particle methods. Herein, a combinational model of the signed distance function (SDF) and immersed boundary method (IBM) is introduced for an arbitrary-shaped wall boundary in the DEM simulation. Practically, this model uses a simple operation to create the wall boundary. Although the SDF is a scalar field for the wall boundary of the DEM, it is useful for the wall boundary of the CFD through combination with the IBM. Validation tests are carried out to demonstrate the adequacy of the SDF/IBM wall boundary model. Regarding the mesh-free particle method for continuum, the phase change problem is one of the challenging topics, as the solid state is usually modeled by extremely high viscous fluid in the phase change simulation. The phase change simulation is shown to be efficiently performed through an implicit algorithm and a heat flux model in the MPS method. The adequacy of these models is verified by the numerical examples.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a phase field method for the numerical simulations of a moving solid object in two-phase flows. A three-phase Cahn-Hilliard and Navier-Stokes model is employed for this problem. The solid region is represented by a single phase in the three-phase system. The rigidity constraint of the solid phase and the no-slip boundary condition on the solid-fluid interface is imposed by attributing a high viscosity to the solid phase. The solid velocity is then averaged over the solid phase region by the momentum conservation of solid phase. In the aspect of numerics, we design an efficient adaptive finite element method to solve the problem. Several numerical simulation results are given to show the capacity and efficiency of our model and numerical method.

Abstract:The phase-field method has become the main computational technique for modeling and predicting the microstructure evolution in materials science and engineering. Its versatility and ability to capture complex microstructure phenomena under different processing conditions make it a valuable tool for researchers and engineers in advancing our understanding and engineering of materials microstructures and properties. This issue of MRS Bulletin is focused on a few recent success stories of applying the phase-field method to understanding, discovering, and designing mesoscale structures and for guiding the design of experiments to optimize properties or discover new phenomena or functionalities. We hope this issue will inspire increasing future focus on utilizing the phase-field method to guide experimental synthesis and characterization for desirable properties.

Abstract:Despite the popularity of phase-field models for fracture in purely mechanical problems, their application to the modeling of fracture in multi-physics problems is much less reported. This might be attributed, on the one hand, to the theoretical complexity involved in multi-physical phenomena, and on the other hand, to the cumbersome implementation of these coupled models in home-made platforms. In this work, the phase-field cohesive zone model (PF-CZM) is adopted as the prototype model to address fracture in various multi-physics problems, e.g., the thermo-mechanical, chemo-mechanical, chemo-thermo-mechanical, electro-mechanical, etc. The relevant theoretical and numerical aspects are categorized into modular structures, and the open-source implementations in the software platform Comsol Multiphysics are presented in details. In order to validate the PF-CZM for fracture in multi-physics problems and its numerical implementation, a number of representative benchmark examples are considered. Not only the qualitative crack patterns but also the quantitative global responses are compared against available experimental test data. It is found that the typical characteristics of fracture in all the considered multi-physics problems are well captured. Moreover, as in the purely mechanical counterpart, the predicted crack pattern and global responses are insensitive to the phase-field length scale, making the PF-CZM promising for modeling fracture in other more involved multi-physics problems.

Abstract:Solidification structure is a key aspect for understanding the mechanical performance of metal alloys, wherein composition and casting parameters considerably influence solidification and determine the unique microstructure of the alloys. By following the principle of free energy minimization, the phase-field method eliminates the need for tracking the solid/liquid phase interface and has greatly accelerated the research and development efforts geared toward optimizing metal solidification microstructures. The recent progress in the application of phase-field simulation to investigate the effect of alloy composition and casting process parameters on the solidification structure of metals is summarized in this review. The effects of several typical elements and process parameters, including carbon, boron, silicon, cooling rate, pulling speed, scanning speed, anisotropy, and gravity, on the solidification structure are discussed. The present work also addresses the future prospects of phase-field simulation and aims to facilitate the widespread applications of phase-field approaches in the simulation of microstructures during solidification.
