Abstract:The technique requirements, basic driving principles and designing methods of a motorized drive system for a kind of rod-cable deployable mast has been introduced in this paper. Three different kinds of driving system scheme are compared and the best one is chosen for the calculated model. Finally, the dynamic analysis of this mechanical system is presented.

Abstract:In order to verify the characteristic of high precision and high stiffness of rode-cable deployable mast, the authours made a kind of rode-cable deployable mast model, and designed the corresponding device simulating zero gravity condition required for experiment. This paper illustrated the structural design and driving system design of the model, and intensively analyzed its precision test of repetitive deploying and modal experiment. The characteristic of high precision is verified by the precision test of repetitive deploying. After validating that the device simulating zero gravity condition is viable to the modal experiment of the model, the authors made the modal experiment. Through comparing the modal frequencies of experiment and computation, this paper verified the high stiffness of this kind of rode-cable deployable mast.

Abstract:The paper has introduced the design project of Spatial Rod-Cable Deployable Structure.The dynamic model of Spatial Rod-Cable Deployable Structure is set up based on the theory of multibody rigid system dynamics, analyze how to construct constraint equations and relevant Jacobi matrices accurately, and use system constraint equation to analysis the moving state of the system. In the end an example of dynamics simulation is present, the result has a wider range of application and a good prospect in deployable structure field. The calculation result shows that the structure plan of modle is feasible.

Abstract:A novel design concept, together with the key components, is developed in detail for an extendable/retractable space mast. It is based on a three-dimensional linkage with triangular cross section that is deployed and stiffened by two sets of cables: passive and active cables. The active cables, whose overall length is controlled by a micro-dc motor, sequentially control the deployment. The fundamental structural dynamic performance is investigated briefly. In particular, a dynamic deployment simulation algorithm is developed in terms of the Cartesian coordinate of the idealized pinned-joint. Accordingly, a 1:2 scaled hi-tech model mast has been built to verify the design conceptions and analytical method. Finally, some suggestions to improve the design and conclusions derived from the deployment experiment results are presented.
GEOMETRIC DESIGN OF DEPLOYABLE/RETRACTABLE MAST

Abstract:To simplify the complicated design process of deployable/retractable structures, a new design process is developed. The process is divided into three phases: the concept design phase, the model phase and the optimization phase. In each phase, different parameter targets have to be fulfilled. According to three phases, a deployable/retractable mast composed of four right triangle prism modules in the longitudinal direction is designed. It can be deployed and folded simultaneously by the linear movements of sleeve-joints. The deployable and retractable movement of the mast is analyzed and key joint forms are designed. Then bar diameters and joint forms are modified based on mast structural mechanics characteristics in the optimization phase. Finally a 1:1 scaled model mast is built to verify the design and the optimization. Analytical results show that the model mast has the advantages of simple locking mechanism, fewer types of joints and bars, so it can be easily manufactured.
Analysis and experiment on erection process of a crescent-shaped cable-truss canopy structure

Abstract:The erection method was investigated for a novel crescent-shaped cable-truss tensile system used as a canopy structure in Yueqing Stadium, Zhejiang Province. An erection programme was suggested, in which members were assembled on a platform near the ground, and then the whole structure was hoisted by dragging the upper and lower radial cables in turn. Numerical simulation of the hoisting process was carried out using the dynamic relaxation method. A suitable shape of the erecting platform was calculated for minimizing the distance of dragging lines. The properties of the structural geometry and internal forces of members in hoisting process were analyzed, and some local struts were found to be toppled over. By means of a 1:15 scaled model of the canopy structure of Yueqing Stadium, a hoisting experiment for the suggested erection programme was carried out. The nodal coordinates of loop cable, the axial forces of loop cable and radial cables at each hoisting step were measured, and well accorded with the numerical solutions by comparison. The results of numerical computation and model test revealed that the final design configuration of this cable-truss tensile system could be reached by the suggested erection programme. The kinematic path of the system during hoisting was stable in general.

Abstract:The detail design philosophy, construction characteristic and structural mechanical performances are firstly introduced, and mechanism of expanding and folding procedure is described for one kind of continuous longeron extendible mast with hinges, named Hinged Mast. Based on the elastic stability theorem and Castigliano energy principle, the critical buckling forces to activate deployment are formulated respectively in detail for the local coil mode and helix mode, and series of numerical computations are performed for structural parametric analysis of hinged space mast. The analytical theory can make a significant contribution to the design of space mast.

Abstract:A 1/15 scale model of the roof of Yueqing Municipal Gymnasium was constructed in order to analyze the distribution characteristic of initial prestress and the performance under load cases of double inner and outer latticed shell string structure.The system was divided into two parts: cable-strut part and beam element part.A similar ratio of each parameter was determined in according to the similar principle.The components and nodes designing were conducted and the validity of model designing was discussed.The loading scheme was determined and the stress and displacement measuring points were arranged according to experimental contents and model characteristics.Full-span load cases were loaded on the model.The experimental results accorded well with the results of FEM analysis,which reveals that model designing,loading scheme and measuring plan can meet the experiment requirements.The internal force and the structure deformation are linear variation under full-span load cases,which reveals that the new type of latticed shell string structure has excellent bearing capacity and structure stiffness,and the structure system is safe and reliable.

Abstract:The main bridge of Caiyuanba Changjiang River Bridge in Chongqing is designed as a hybrid arch bridge composed of rigid-frame structure,basket handle steel box tied arch and steel truss girder.In the construction,the superstructure blocks of the main bridge are lifted and erected with the 4 200 kN cable crane.In this paper,the determination of the basic parameters of the crane and design of each part of the crane components based on the load calculations are described.

Abstract:This paper addresses the structural design, the deployment control design, the static analysis and the model testing of a new double-ring deployable truss that is intended for large mesh antennas. This deployable truss is a multi-DOF (degree-of-freedom), over-constrained mechanism. Two kinds of deployable basic elements were introduced, as well as a process to synthesise the structure of the deployable truss. The geometric equations were formulated to determine the length of each strut, including the effects of the joint size. A DOF evaluation showed that the mechanism requires two active cables and requires deployment control. An open-loop control system was designed to control the rotational velocities of two motors. The structural stiffness of the truss was assessed by static analysis that considered the effects of the constraint condition and the pre-stress of the passive cables. A 4.2-metre demonstration model of an antenna was designed and fabricated. The geometry and the deployment behaviour of the double-ring truss were validated by the experiments using this model.
Approximate optimization and performance analysis of rigid cable dome structure

Abstract:There are some problems for cable dome structures, like the ridge cables are easy to be out of work, the construction requires high technology and outermost ring beams are always with high compressive force. To solve these problems, a type of rigid cable dome structure was presented, replacing ridge cables by rigid members. Approximate optimization was carried out using uniform design method. As an example, a 60m-span Geiger rigid cable dome subjected to symmetrical uniform load was analyzed using U12(37) uniform table. First the approximate functional relation between outcome indicators and design parameters was established. Then an approximate optimum rigid cable dome structure was obtained and the optimum result was verified by extreme value analysis. On this basis, comparing with the conventional cable dome, conclusions are arrived that the upper chords of rigid cable dome structure are under tension, only diagonal cables are necessary to be tensioned during the structural construction and the force of outermost ring beam decrease gradually with the load increasing.

Abstract:Design conception, driving mechanism, latch and unlatch mechanism were carried out herein for a highly synchronized deployment space mast. A prototype mast was built to verify conception design. Modal analysis, frequency analysis and transient analysis were completed to evaluate dynamic behavior. Deployment dynamic analysis algorithm, complex multi-body constrained system, was developed. Deployment test and its performance verification were conducted. Suggestions to improve are presented in accordance with finding.

Abstract:Bi-Hoop Circular Deployable Truss ( BCDT) can improve the stiffness of the deployable truss and is suitable for large scale deployable antenna system.In this paper, flexible tensile cable network was designed for BCDT to support the metal reflector of the deployable antenna.Form find-ing analysis was conducted with the finite element method.A 2-metre diameter BCDT model was manufactured and assembled, serving as the boundary of the flexible tensile cable network.The flex-ible tensile cable network was also fabricated and installed on the BCDT model.The surface of cable net was measured by non-contact photogrammetry method.The measured coordinates of the cable net model were close to those of the design.The feasibility of the BCDT and cable net was verified.

Abstract:： Deployable principle of the double-loop deployable truss antenna is analyzed. The vibrated frequency of the fully deployable structure is calculated. It is illustrated that this structure had strong stiffness. The dynamic analysis of the deployable process is built. In additional, it is optimal designed that driving devices of the deployment, node, driving style and link bar, etc. The model is established. The experiment results indicate that the models can deployable frequently, thus the feasibility of the device is verified. On the basis of the contrast tests of the analysis, deployable antenna of the double-loop truss antenna possesses the property of the simple form, higher shrinkage ratio and strong stiffness. It is verified the structure can deploy smoothly under driving of torsional spring and motor cable force, and it can be used as an effective support of deployable antenna.

Abstract:To rapidly across ditches,valleys and other artificial or natural barriers for personnel,a new light deployable military bridge was developed.Scissors and sleeves are adopted to realize the axial deployment.A motor is used to drove a main cable to expand the bridge until it reaches a designed location,and then the bridge is locked.The functions in reducing deformation and enhancing bearing capacity were analyzed for the prestressed cable and brackets.A reduced-scale model for this bridge was made,and the test validation was carried out.The research results show that bridge deflection decreases from 1/114 to 1/386 because of setting the prestressed cable,and the bearing capacity increases by 35.1% due to the brackets.The structure can be successfully deployed and put into use,and the test result is in good agreement with the simulation one.

Abstract:This paper addresses a type of deployable mesh antenna consisting of the double-ring deployable truss edge frame and the cable net reflector. The structural design concept of the deployable antennas is presented. The deployable truss is designed and the geometric relationship of each strut length is formulated. Two types of radial truss elements are described and compared. The joint pattern and the active cables of the final design concept are determined. The pattern of the cable net is the three-orientation grid. Two connection schemes between the reflector and the deployable edge frame are investigated. The design parameters and the shape adjustment mechanism of this cable net are determined. The measurement test technologies of the antennas on the ground including test facilities, deployment test, and measurement and adjustment test are proposed. The antenna patterns are analyzed based on the real surfaces of the reflector obtained by the reflective surface accuracy measurement. The tests and analytic results indicated that the accuracy of the reflective surface is high and is suitable for low-frequency communication.

Abstract:This paper explores the design of a new type of deployable antenna system composed of a double-ring deployable truss, prestressed cable nets, and a metallic reflector mesh. The primary novelty is the double-ring deployable truss, which is found to significantly enhance the stiffness of the entire antenna over single-ring systems with relatively low mass gain. Structural optimization was used to minimize the system mass subject to constraints on system stiffness and member section availability. Both genetic algorithms (GA) and gradient-based optimizers are employed. The optimized system results were obtained and incorporated into a 4.2-m scaled system prototype, which was then experimentally tested for dynamic properties. Practical considerations such as the maximum number of truss sides and their effects on system performances were also discussed.
Robust configuration analysis and experimental study of cable supported hyperbolic flat latticed shell structure

Abstract:Aiming at the problem that bad topological layout leads to poor structure robustness and based on the H2 norm of system transfer function, quantitative evaluation index of structural robustness and robust configuration solving method were established firstly. Secondly, the relative densities of elements were chosen as design variables and the solid isotropic material with penalization (SIMP) model was used to describe the stiffness of the material, the robustness based structural design was transformed into continuum topology optimization. Then, the big bang-big crunch (BB-BC) method was improved by two-stage search and was used to solve the continuum topology optimization model. After that, taking cable supported hyperbolic flat latticed shell structure with four supports as an example, robust configurations under different load conditions were analyzed and the optimized effect of BB-BC method with different parameters was explored too. At last, comparative analysis between optimized model and conventionally designed model was conducted by static experiment and impact experiment. Results show that the two-stage BB-BC method can be well implemented for the robust design of cable supported structure, the improved BB-BC method can speed up the convergence, and arranging members based on the robust configuration can significantly increase the structure's mechanical property and anti-interference capability.
