Abstract:The paper considers three common snubber circuits used on gate turn-off thyristor and/or insulated gate bipolar transistor inverters. The three snubbers are passive lossless circuits for power bridge legs, and the improvements and modifications to these snubber circuits are presented. The comparative features and operation of the three improved energy recovery snubbers are discussed and supported by PSPICE simulations and experimental results.

Abstract:This paper considers two common snubber circuits used in gate turn-off thyristor inverters. Both circuits incorporate an inductive turn-on snubber and capacitive turn-off snubbers. The first snubber circuit, which normally has resistive losses, is converted into an active recovery snubber circuit by the addition of a switch. The second snubber is a passive recovery lossless snubber, and an improvement to this circuit renders it viable. The comparative features and operation of the two improved recovery snubbers are considered and supported by PSPICE simulations and experimental results.

Abstract:There are demands for very large KVA switched reluctance drives (SRD) for many applications. However, one of the key issues is to ensure that the current and voltage capabilities of IGBTs are enough to safely transfer the power from the supply to the SRM. This paper extends the snubber topology of fun bridge circuit to the asymmetric bridge circuit of SRDs, proposes and evaluates three different snubber protection circuits which consist of resistance, diode and capacitance (RDC) in order to obtain the most appropriate RDC circuit which can be used in the asymmetric bridge circuit. Both simulation and experiment validate the analyses on a laboratory prototype SRM drive.

Abstract:In this paper, a separate RCD snubber design is proposed for LLC converter with multiple switches in parallel for secondary side synchronous rectification. The proposed design can reduce the influence of circuit parasitic parameters on the voltage stress of switches, effectively absorb the voltage ringing of multiple switches in parallel at the secondary side, reduce the voltage stress and improve the reliability. The reason why the asymmetric placement of the RCD snubber voltage leads to the intensify of voltage ringing at the secondary side is analyzed. By establishing the circuit model, the expression of voltage ringing when multiple switches are connected in parallel is derived. According to the model derivation results, the influence of asymmetric snubber absorption position on voltage ringing is given, and finally the separate RCD snubber design is given. The circuit model is simple and the derivation process is clear. Finally, an 800V input/25V output/5kW dc/dc prototype is built to verify the proposed RCD snubber design.

Abstract:A novel passive lossless snubber circuit for multilevel inverters is proposed in the paper. The topology of it is simple and requires no extra control. In order to reduce the high voltage stress on power switches of multilevel inverters with the proposed snubber circuit, an improved snubber circuit is presented by adding separate low-power DC sources into the original snubber. The operation principles and design considerations are described in detail in the paper. A prototype of three-phase three-level diode clamp inverter with the improved passive lossless snubber is built and tested. The simulation and experimentation indicate that not only can it realize soft switching operation of the three-level inverter with low voltage stress but also the topology is simple.

Abstract:This paper presents a complete passive lossless snubber suitable for high frequency UPS inverters, where bridge leg modules and miscellaneous PWM mode can be adopted. The proposed configuration recovers snubber energy into the DC rail and/or load automatically at main switches turn-on and turn-off via resonance in a simple network without any transformer or coupled inductors, which minimizes the additional parts' number. For a single-phase UPS application, snubber operation analysis, parameter designs are presented along with simulated and experimental confirmation.

This paper presents an adaptive composite soft switching configuration which combines snubber functions and resonant ZCS circuits for switches in inverters using power bridge leg modules. The energy trapped in the snubber is sent back into the DC supply through a high frequency transformer without active devices or resistors. Abstract:In this paper a novel passive snubber is proposed, which can suppress the voltage spike across the bridge leg of the isolated full-bridge boost topology. The snubber is composed of capacitors, inductors and diodes. Two capacitors connected in series are used to absorb the voltage spike and the energy of each capacitor can be transferred to the load during one switching cycle by the resonance of the inductors and capacitors. The operational principle of the passive snubber is analyzed in detail based on a three-phase power factor correction (PFC) converter, and the design considerations of both the converter and the snubber are given. Finally, a 3kW laboratory-made prototype is built. The experimental results verify the theoretical analysis and evaluations. They also prove the validity and feasibility of the proposed methods.

Abstract:In this study, two novel improved passive snubbers suitable for isolated full-bridge boost topology are proposed. The snubbers are composed of two capacitors, two inductors and four diodes. The voltage spike across the primary side of transformer is absorbed by one capacitor of the snubbers during a charging period, and by the other capacitor in the following charging period. The energy of capacitors can be transferred to the output side of the power factor correction (PFC) converter during one charging period by the resonance of the inductors and capacitors. Taking one improved snubber, for example the operational process of the original and the improved snubbers are analysed in a single-phase isolated full-bridge boost PFC converter. Furthermore, between the original and the improved snubbers, comparative analysis about the voltage and current stress, parameters limitation and the reliability are given. Finally, experimental study has been done on a laboratory-made single-phase PFC prototype, and the feasibility of the proposed method and the validity of the theoretical analysis are verified by the experimental results.

Abstract:A novel three-phase single-stage full-bridge power factor correction（PFC）converter is presented,which can realize the functions such as power factor correction,electrical isolation between input and output sides and output voltage regulation.The mechanism and suppression method of oscillatory voltage across the primary side of transformer is analyzed in detail when the bridge diagonal-leg switches turn on,and a passive snubber circuit is proposed to suppress this oscillatory voltage.The snubber circuit is composed of capacitor,inductors and diodes.The capacitor is connected in parallel with the primary side of transformer to suppress the oscillatory voltage.The energy of capacitor can be transferred to the load during one switching cycle by the resonance of the inductor and capacitor.The oscillatory voltage across the primary side of transformer and the switches is suppressed efficiently through the passive snubber circuit,which has been verified by the experimental results.

Abstract:To solve the problem of voltage overshoot during switching-off transient in H-bridge, an active lossless H-bridge snubber composing of auxiliary switch and snubber capacitor is discussed, which aims to enable the H-bridge to realize a higher voltage and current. When the main switch is turned off, the capacitor absorbs the overshoot energy and the energy is returned to DC side through the auxiliary switch. Compared with the conventional RCD snubber, the voltage overshoot can be limited effectively by increasing the snubber capacitor value without considering ohmic loss. As a result, the working voltage of the switch is indirectly improved. In addition, the problem of resistance volume and heat dissipation has been avoided. All the work had been done provides a useful reference in optimizing the topology structure of Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) fast control power supply, which can reduce the volume of power supply and simplify the control strategy.

Abstract:Two variations of a new adaptive turn on/off snubber configurations are developed where energy trapped in the snubber is fully recovered, passively, into the DC rail, in addition to the load, without any active devices or resistors. The circuit may be operated in a soft-clamped, or hard-clamped snubber mode. The circuit models are analyzed in detail and their relative circuit performances are compared. Besides individual advantages, the two variations of the snubber posses the common characteristics that maximum over-shoot voltage on the switch is fixed, peak switch current is low and the operational range of load current is wider than conventional snubbers. The application of the two variations of the snubber, for use in high frequency power converters, is discussed and design equations are given, along with simulations and experimental results for an IGBT converter

Abstract:This paper focuses on the passive lossless snubber for multilevel inverters. A novel passive lossless snubber cell for multilevel inverters is proposed in the paper. In order to reduce the over-voltage on devices of multilevel inverters with the proposed passive lossless snubber cell, an improved snubber cell is presented by adding separated low-power DC sources into the original snubber, the operation principles and design consideration of which are described in detail. A prototype of three phase three-level inverter with the improved passive lossless snubber is built and tested. The simulations and experiments indicate that it not only can realize soft switching of the three-level inverter with low over-voltage but also is the topology simple.

Abstract:the dual active bridge topology is attractive in bidirectional DC-DC applications due to its simplicity and soft switching capability. However, its high circulating energy will cause high conduction loss. This paper proposed two new dual active bridge topologies in order to minimize the circulating energy with minimal auxiliary components. These topologies can also achieve ZVS in all load range as well as simple control scheme. These topologies will be attractive in high power high density applications like battery charger, hybrid vehicle, electric vehicle and solar power system. The detailed analysis and comparison between the proposed topologies and traditional DAB converters are also presented in the paper. The experimental and simulation results verified the theoretical analysis well.

Abstract:Single-phase zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) inverter with wide bandgap devices has higher efficiency and power density. However, the dc-side capacitor of the inverter will suffer double line frequency ripple and reduces the lifetime of the dc bus capacitor. Active power decoupling (APD) is an effective method to replace the short lifetime electrolytic capacitor with a smaller film capacitor. In order to help achieving the ZVS condition for ZVS inverter and the additional APD circuit, this article presents a ZVS topology for single-phase full-bridge inverter with APD circuit by adding an auxiliary branch between the dc source and the bridge legs. The auxiliary branch is composed of a clamping capacitor, an auxiliary switch, and a resonant inductor. A ZVS pulsewidth modulation scheme is proposed for a single-phase inverter with APD. The gate drive pulses are designed to realize the ZVS turn-on for the main switches of both APD circuit and single-phase full-bridge inverter. Circuit operation stages are analyzed and ZVS conditions are given. Finally, the proposed ZVS inverter with APD circuit is verified on a 1.5-kW inverter prototype.

Abstract:The fundamental building block of cascaded static synchronous compensator used in distribution grid is H-bridge based converter module. In this paper a type of "plug and play" module was introduced to improve the device compensation performance and reliability. The module based on IGBT parallel connection was discussed about the design of electrical parameters and physical structure. In order to improve the module flexibility and anti-interference a universal module controller integrates with functions of control, communication, DC voltage sampling, fault detection and module protection was developed on complex programmable logic device. Dedicated driver cores were applied to improve the stability of HCM. Module function and stability are verified by experiment carried out on HCM experimental platform and industrial prototype.

Abstract:In this paper, an improved passive snubber is investigated in a single-phase single-stage full-bridge boost power factor correction (PFC) converter, by which the voltage spike across primary side of the power transformer can be suppressed and the absorbed energy can be transferred to the output side. When compared with the basic passive snubber, the two single-inductors are replaced by a coupled-inductor in the improved snubber. As a result, synchronous resonances in the snubber can be achieved, which can avoid the unbalance of the voltage and current in the snubber. The operational principle of the improved passive snubber is analyzed in detail based on a single-phase PFC converter, and the design considerations of both the snubber and the coupled-inductor are given. Finally, a laboratory-made prototype is built, and the experimental results verify the feasibility of the proposed method and the validity of the theoretical analysis and design method.

Abstract:The paper proposes a new passive circuit for partial snubber-energy recovery in GTO thyristor high-power voltage-source inverters. The analysis and simulations show that the proposed bridge-leg snubber circuit can recover greater than sixty five per cent of the total snubber energy, as well as the freewheel diode reverse recovery energy. This energy is recovered back to the DC supply through a closely coupled transformer, without any active devices or associated control circuitry. This snubber circuit, being simple, is particularly suitable for use in GTO thyristor high-power inverters. Design equations, simulations and experimental results are given.
