Abstract:In pursuit of carbon neutrality, zero-carbon ammonia fuel emerges as a viable solution for reducing energy carbon emissions. Integrating ammonia into diesel engines, by partially substituting it for diesel, presents a recognized method for mitigating carbon emissions. However, introducing ammonia as a fuel adds an alternative source of elemental nitrogen, in addition to air, thereby increasing the formation pathways for nitrogen-based pollutants and altering emission characteristics compared to traditional engines. To enhance understanding of these emission characteristics within the ammonia-diesel dual-fuel system, this study employs a validated threedimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model to meticulously analyze the formation and evolution of in-cylinder nitrogen-based pollutants. The research highlights that, in the ammonia-n-heptane binary fuel chemical mechanism, addressing fuel- and air-borne nitrogen separately effectively segregates emissions derived from these two sources, particularly during the diffusion combustion phase. This segregation reveals that the formation of thermal nitrogen oxides (NOx) (including nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2)) 2 )) is delayed relative to pollutants originating from fuel nitrogen, with the formation rate of thermal NOx being contingent on the duration nitrogen remains at elevated temperatures. Additionally, thermal NOx predominantly originates at the periphery of the diffusion flame, whereas fuel-derived NOx is more evenly dispersed within the spray combustion zone, albeit with higher concentrations at the flame edge. Moreover, nitrous oxide (N2O) 2 O) formation, as a partial oxidation product of ammonia, primarily occurs at the diffusion flame edge, where ammonia (NH3) 3 ) oxidation is accompanied by diesel combustion. However, by distinguishing between fuel- and air-borne nitrogen, this approach prevents thermal NOx from interacting with fuel-derived amino groups, thereby altering the distribution of nitrogen-based pollutants during the late oxidation stage. Nevertheless, this methodological separation can help deepen understanding of nitrogen-based pollutant emissions, laying the groundwork for the development and optimization of control strategies for these pollutants.
