Abstract:A separated flow model for predicting two-phase pressure drop and two-phase forced convective heat transfer has been developed for annular flow in narrow annular gap at high mass quality. Conservation equations of mass, momentum, and energy are used to solve thicknesses of the thin liquid films both internal and external velocity distribution and temperature distribution. The model can also predict the heat transfer coefficients changing with the annular gap size and heat flux.

Abstract:Heat transfer characteristics of single-phase turbulent flow in bilaterally heated narrow annular channels were studied and the theoretical model was proposed.Based on the present model,theoretical calculation was performed to predict the convective heat transfer characteristics for the developed turbulent flow in bilaterally heated narrow annular channels with gap sizes of 1.0,1.5 and 2.0 mm,respectively.Calculations were found in good agreement with experimental data.The results show that the heat-flux ratios,i.e.the ratio of the heating flux of the inner tube to that of the outer tube,have great influences on the characteristics of heat transfer during single-phase turbulent flow in bilaterally heated narrow annular channels.Whether the convective heat transfer is enhanced or deteriorated with reduced gap in bilaterally heated narrow annular channels depends on the combination influence of the heat-flux ratio and the Reynolds number.

Abstract:In the vertical narrow annular channel with bilateral heating, the critical heat flux of annular upward flow was studied. A mathematical model on the base of the mass, momentum and energy conversation equations was developed. By numerically solving the (equations), the relationship between CHF and critical quality is obtained,and the influences of pressure on CHF were analyzed. The CHF obtained by the present model was compared with those from experiments.

Abstract:The present paper has developed a mathematical separated flow model for annular upward flow in vertical narrow rectangular channels to predict the critical heat flux. The theoretical model is based on fundamental conservation principles: the mass, momentum, and energy conservation equation of liquid film and the momentum conservation equation of vapor core together with a set of closure relationships (such as entrainment rate, deposition rate, interfacial shear stress and initial entrainment fraction at the onset of annular flow). The predicted results are compared with the experimental data and fairly good agreement between them is achieved. By numerically solving the equations, liquid film thickness, liquid film velocity in the liquid film and heat transfer coefficient are obtained. With the applications of the present model, the critical heat flux in the rectangular channel is calculated and analyzed.

Abstract:The post-dryout forced convective heat transfer in narrow annular channel was investigated experimentally.This investigation is conducted with deionized water flowed up through a narrow annular channel that is heated electrically on the outside and inside tube.The results show that the heat transfer behaviors in the annular gap is dissimilar to that in common annular tubes.Based on the experiment data,the Groeneveld equation was developed.A heat transfer equation using the ratio of the bigger heat flux on inside and outside tube with the sum of them was developed.

Abstract:In this paper, according to a separated phase flow model for annular two-phase flow in the vertical annular channel, the liquid film thickness, void fraction and two-phase pressure drop along the flow channel are predicted. The calculated pressure drop values are compared with that measured in experiment in the range of mass flux from 38.8 to 163.1kg/m2s; pressure from 1.5 to 6.0 MPa; and heat flux from 4.9 to 50.7kW/m2 for inside tube and from 4.2 to 78.8kW/m2 for outside tube. It can be found that the model can predict the pressure drop well. With the mass flux increasing and the gap of the annular channel decreasing, pressure drop increases.

Abstract:A critical heat flux analysis model,of annular flow in rectangular narrow channels,is obtained by taking reference to the predictive analysis model, of critical heat flux of annular flow in round tubes,and suitably considering the special structural features of rectangular narrow channels.This model can be used to predict the critical heat flux value,at the occurrence of boiling of a 2-phase annular flow in rectangular narrow channels,having a gap width of not less than 0.5 mm.Calculation results indicate that the critical heat flux in the channel is noticeably enhanced,in case the width to height ratio of the channel's inlet cross-section is between 25～85.

Abstract:The Chexal-Harrison two-phase wall and inter-phase friction models developed by EPRI newly and the simple two-phase wall and inter-phase heat transfer models put forward by the paper are used to set up the two-fluid model which is fitted for boiling heat transfer and flow in narrow annular channel. On the base of the two-fluid model, a thermal hydraulic code-THYME is accomplished. Then the thermal hydraulic characteristic of narrow annular channel is analyzed by RELAP5/MOD3.2 code and THYME code. Compared with experimental data, RELAP5/MOD3.2 underestimates the outlet steam, and the results of THYME is agreed with the experimental data.

Abstract:According to the flow passage characteristic of rectangular narrow channel and the annular flow predicted analytical model of Critical Heat Flux(CHF) in round tube, the annular flow CHF analytical model in rectangular narrow channel has been gotten. This model can been used to predicted the CHF of boiling two-phase flow annular flow in rectangular narrow channel which the gap width is not less than 0.5mm. Through analysing and calculation, when the inlet width-gap width ratio of rectangular narrow channel is within 25-85, the enhancement of CHF in channel is obvious. Based on the practical and economical sides, this range can be taken as the CHF enhancement reference range of inlet dimensions in rectangular narrow channel.

Abstract:Based on separated flow, a theoretical three-fluids model predicting for annular upward flow in a vertical narrow annuli with bilateral heating has been developed in present paper. The theoretical model is based on fundamental conservation principles: the mass, momentum, and energy conservation equations of liquid films and the momentum conservation equation of vapor core. Through numerically solving the equations, liquid film thickness, radial velocity, and temperature distribution in liquid films, heat transfer coefficient of inner and outer tubes and axial pressure gradient are obtained. The predicted results are compared with the experimental data and good agreements between them are found. With same mass flow rate and heat flux, the thickness of liquid film in the annular narrow channel will decrease with decreasing the annular gap. The two-phase heat transfer coefficient will increase with the increase of heat flux and the decrease of the annular gap. That is, the heat transfer will be enhanced with small annular gap. The effects of outer wall heat flux on velocity and temperature in the outer liquid layer, thickness of outer liquid film and outer wall heat transfer coefficient are clear and obvious. The effects of outer wall heat flux on velocity and temperature in the inner liquid layer, thickness of inner liquid film and the inner wall heat transfer coefficient are very small; the similar effects of the inner wall heat flux are found. As the applications of the present model, the critical heat flux and critical quality are calculated.

Abstract:The steady state coupled heat transfer of turbulent developing airflow with wall radiation was investigated numerically,which took place in the annular channel with a hot inner wall and an adiabatic outer wall.The low Re ynolds number k-ε turbulence model and the SIMPLEC algorithm were used to simulate the flow and convective heat transfer,and the Monte Carlo method was employed to solve the radiative heat exchange between walls.The two heat transfer modes of convection and wall radiation interacted by means of the adiabatic boundary condition of outer wall.The effects of relevant parameters and the variable physical properties of airflow were analyzed.The results showed significant effects of the inlet Reynolds number and the wall emissivities.The predicted results of convective heat flux distributions showed great difference during considering the variable physical properties or not.The numerical results with constant physical proerty assumptions can result in the incorrect recognition on the of heat transport characteristics in annular channels.

Abstract:A computational study of convective heat transfer for turbulent flows in multi‐channel, narrow‐gap fuel element has been carried out, using a general marching procedure. The fluid distribution adjustment among seven annular‐sector channels is based on the assumption of the same pressure drop in these passages. It was found that the inlet velocities of the bilateral channels are lower than those of the middles, and the axial local heat transfer coefficients for the seven channels do not approach the fully developed constant value. At each cross section, the periphery temperature distribution is not uniform, while the local temperature distribution along axial coordinate is of sinuous type with the peak at x=0.7–0.8 m. At the same Reynolds number, the averaged Nusselt numbers of water in Channel 1 and Channel 7 are higher than those in the middles. The maximum surface temperature increases almost linearly with the inlet water temperature, whereas it decreases almost asymptotically with the inlet average velocity.

Abstract:According to the flow passage characteristic of narrow rectangular channel and liquid film dry-out mechanics of annular flow critical heat flux (CHF), an annular flow CHF analytical model for narrow rectangular channel has been achieved. This model may be used to predict the CHF behavior of boiling two-phase flow in narrow rectangular channel with gap width of not being less than 0.0005m (the equivalent diameter of this channel is 0.001m). Through analyzing and calculating, when the inlet dimensionless gap width of narrow rectangular channel is within 30–85, the enhancement of CHF in channel is obvious. At the same time, according to the characteristic of two-phase flow, the new determinant laws of CHF in boiling two-phase flow system have been derived. Through analyzing and calculating, it is substantial that this determinant laws is appropriate. The best dimensionless gap width of heat flux enhancement has been achieved to be 45–75.

Abstract:In most designs, the coolant channel is under non-uniform heating, mainly one-sided heating. There is no clear understanding of the problem of unilateral heating. In order to deepen the understanding of the mechanism of CHF in the unilateral heating rectangular narrow channel, a three-fluid transient model of annular flow was developed for the rectangular narrow channel heated on one side. Basic conservation equations were established for the liquid film, droplets, and vapor core respectively, and the constitutive model involved void fraction, interphase friction, wall friction, and the calculation of entrainment rate and deposition rate. The finite difference method was used to solve the three-fluid transient model of annular flow numerically. Within a wide range of experimental parameters (pressure 0.1-15.0 MPa, mass flux 300.0-17100.0 kg/m(2)s, inlet subcooling 6.5-292.5 K, length of channel section 4.0-50.0 mm, width of channel section 2.0-6.35 mm, length of channel 200-1550 mm, and CHF value 0.63-28.4 MW/m(2)), most of the calculation error of the model were within 30%, which proved the validity of the three-fluid transient model of annular flow. Abstract:The heat transfer characteristic in the micro-channel by high heat flux is simulated by FLUENT. The dimensions of micro-channel are optimized by judgment of the average temperature of heat source, the surface temperature difference and pump power. It is shown that the optimized hydraulic diameter and the optimized aspect ratio are 0.615 mm and 3.25 mm, respectively. Heat transfer correlation is fitted by non-dimension parameters. And entransy dissipation extremum principle is verified by simulation results.

Abstract:Because annulus channel can be used to develop high efficiency compact heat exchangers, the heat transfer in annulus channel has become great interest to researchers in recent years. Most of the studies focus on the vertical concentric and horizontal eccentric annulus. The investigations about single phase force convection heat transfer inside a vertical eccentric annulus are not enough. In this work, force convection heat transfer is numerically studied to determine the eccentricity effect inside a vertical annulus. For this purpose, full Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations along with energy equations are solved in a 3-D grid. The discrete method of the equations is based on finite-volume method and the turbulence model is RNG k-epsilon model. The radius ratio of the annulus is 0.8 in this work. Heat flux of one wall is constant while the other is insulated. Firstly, the feasibility and exactness of the numerical method is proved by comparing the Nusselt number. with experiment in concentric annulus. Then the effect of eccentricity is studied in detail.
