Abstract:The vibration signal of transformer's winding is correlative with the conditions of winding's compression and distortion, therefore, vibration monitor of transformer's winding is an effective method for on-line monitoring the power transformer delitescent faults. A new method of obtaining the energy distribution with time and frequency of transformer's winding vibration based on Hilbert-Huang Transform(HHT) was developed. Firstly, Empirical mode decomposition(EMD) separated the vibration series into a finite and small number of intrinsic mode functions(IMF).IMF was directly decomposed from vibration series and could reflect the intrinsic physical property of vibration series more clearly. Secondly, Hilbert transform was applied to every IMF. Then, three dimensional amplitude(energy)-frequency-time spectrum designated as Hilbert spectrum was got, where both amplitude and frequency are functions of time. Eliminating the spurious harmonics without physical mean, the Hilbert spectrum provided high-resolution time-frequency characteristics of winding's different work states. It is demonstrated by the test results that the new detection method is very useful in the fault diagnosis of transformer's winding.

Abstract:A new harmonic modeling method for three phase multi-legged transformer based on its core topology is developed in which the three phase transformer is described by a set of electrical and magnetic circuit equations and three primary fluxes and magnetomotive forces (MMF) are used as the mediate variables to relate the electric circuit equations with magnetic circuit equations. The harmonic modeling problem of three phase multi-legged transformer is resolved into the analysis and calculation of the magnetizing currents of three phase transformer and the method for the analyzing and calculating the magnetizing currents in three phase transformers with three limbs and five limbs respectively is expounded. In the proposed model the saturation effect of transformer core is represented by monodromic magnetization curve. The eddy current and hysteresis losses in the core and the stray losses of the transformer are simulated by three equivalent resistances. Finally, the elementary procedure for establishing the harmonic models of three phase transformer in phase coordinate system is discussed.

Abstract:Because of the high prices and difficulties to conduct short-current tests of large power transformers, it is meaningful to analyze the dynamic electromagnetic force analysis of the transformer windings through finite element software. Research in this paper presents a model of the 50000MVA/110KV three phase transformer established by COMSOL. Different conditions of short-circuit current are applied to the model, testing the dynamic electromagnetic forces of the transformer windings. Results of the paper may be useful for investigating the winding deformation state prediction.

Abstract:Being aware of the great hazard of transformer winding deformation and insulation damage under the impact of huge electromagnetic forces caused by short circuit faults, this paper presented an analysis method based on explicit dynamic 3-D finite element method, enabling detailed and representative investigations of the mechanical effects of external short circuit faults in power transformers. Considering the displacements and deformations of windings could change the leakage flux distribution and further influence the remaining computation, an electromagnetic-mechanical field coupling model was proposed. To accurately calculate the windings transient deformation, both the disks and spacers were considered as the elastic-plastic body. Meanwhile, the high-voltage and low-voltage windings were modeled into 21 disks and 18 spacers are evenly arranged between the adjacent copper disks. For illustrating the effectiveness of the proposed method, a real full-scale 120 MVA/220 kV oil-immersed transformer model was built to suffer the serious three-phase short circuit fault as the case study. A comparison of the von-Mises stress distribution in healthy, pre-strain and dislocation windings under the same short circuit fault confirmed that the healthy winding can withstand the impact of short circuit fault without any unrecoverable deformation; insufficient mechanical strength, pre-strain and local dislocation are the key factors to winding deformation, rupture even collapse. Additionally, the theoretical model and simulation method can be used as a substitute for costly and cumbersome field tests in faults characteristics analysis of transformer windings.

Abstract:The transformer winding deformation and the insulation damage will occur under the impact of huge electromagnetic forces caused by the short circuit faults. In this paper, the electromagnetic-mechanical (E-M) field coupling 3D FE model was used for analyzing the transient characteristics of power transformer under short circuit faults. Considering the process of the transformer winding suffering short circuit current is a complicated multi-field coupling problem, this paper explores the inter-relationship between the short circuit fault topology, electromagnetic field and the mechanical field. Both the mathematical model of each field involved and the E-M field coupling model have been built. By the use of 3D FEM, the transient characteristics such as the electromagnetic forces, stress distribution and displacement of the transformer model have been calculated and simulated. Additionally, by analyzing the results from the simulation example, the radial and axial forces characteristics and the structure design suggestion for the winding have been obtained and proposed.

Abstract:The vibration analysis method is widely used in transformer diagnosis. However, to our knowledge, the researches about the magnetic field for the vibration method are mainly based on numerical modelling rather than analytic calculation. But the analytic calculation is quite essential for the application of the vibration method. This paper calculates and simulates the magnetic flux density distribution of the winding and core in a single-phase two-limb transformer, respectively based on the Biot-Savart law and Maxwell's equations. The proposed results and simulations are consistent with the precedent researches. It is believed that this analytic calculation and analysis of the transformer magnetic field may help developing the transformer condition monitoring and fault diagnosis based on the vibration analysis method.

Abstract:The multi-winding medium frequency transformer (MMFT) has attracted widespread attention, since its application in power electronic transformers can simplify the system structure and reduce the volume and weight. However, the special working conditions of MMFT due to high voltage and high power density increase the difficulty of insulation design for MMFT. For this issue, this paper presents a comprehensive analysis of electric filed characteristics for MMFT. First, the electric field model of MMFT is established using the 2-D finite element method. Based on it, the influences of connection mode, core structure, and hollow winding on the electric field characteristics of MMFT are studied, including the overall electric field distribution, maximum electric field intensity, and the electric field intensity along a fixed path. The results show that there are differences in the maximum electric field intensity for different connection modes and different core structures, which provides references for MMFT insulation design. The proposed modeling method and analysis results in this paper are important for insulation improvement of MMFT.

Simulation and Analysis of Dynamic Characteristics of Transformer Winding in Short-Circuit Fault by Finite Element Method

Abstract:It is of great significance for the stability of power system to research the electromagnetic and mechanical dynamic characteristics of transformer in short-circuit fault by numerical simulation. A 110kV/25000kVA power transformer model is established by the finite element method. In which Ogden model is adopted to conduct simulation analysis on winding spacer for considering its nonlinear mechanical characteristics. Some simulation results are obtained on the basis of modeling. Firstly, the magnitude and distribution of the axial and radial electromagnetic force of windings in short-circuit fault are calculated. Secondly, the dynamic change rule of displacement and stress of high voltage and low voltage windings in short- circuit fault is obtained. Thirdly, the distribution of maximum displacement and maximum stress on each coil disk are calculated. In addition, the difference of mechanical characteristics between HV winding and LV winding is analyzed. The above results can provide reference for transformer design.

Abstract:This paper introduced the main point of three winding transformer impedance circle characters that is constructing the 3D locus between the voltage differences in the high-and low-(or middle-) sides of a particular phase against the currents of this two windings. In additional, error terms caused by exciting current of both two winding and three-winding transformer have been analyzed. Current compensation was employed to reduce error. A Matlab code was developed to calculate the feature parameter of the impedance circle character. Winding deformation can be diagnosed by comparing the index with the fingerprint. PSCAD simulation and fault recorder analysis results show that the technique is free from load, does not call for any special equipment and enable on-line monitoring.
Winding vibration analysis of unbalanced transformer based on electromagnetic-mechanical coupling

Abstract:Aiming at the problem of winding vibration of the transformer under unbalanced operation, the changes in winding current, internal magnetic leakage, and winding vibration characteristics in the three-phase Δ / Y transformer under different operating modes are studied through the electromagnetic-mechanical coupling. To simulate the internal electromagnetic environment of transformer during unbalanced operation state, a three-dimensional finite element simulation model is constructed. Then a dynamic model experiment platform was built to measure winding current and vibration acceleration of transformer under different conditions. The results of simulation and experiment show that the unbalanced phase differs from the normal phase in electromagnetic force and vibration acceleration by about two times, in a 20% unbalanced degree, which seriously endangers the stability of internal structure in transformer. The correctness of this model is verified by the comparison of simulation and experiment. It summarizes the variation law of electric field, magnetic field, and mechanical field of the transformer, and provides a feasible method for the extraction and identification of abnormal characteristics of unbalanced winding operation.

Abstract:Mechanical characteristics analysis of normal and defective transformer windings with eccentric distance under short-circuit (SC) fault are conducted using three-dimensional finite element method (3-D FEM). The change characteristics of maximum stress and displacement of defective windings with different eccentric distances of high voltage winding are obtained. It is found that the increase of the eccentric distance of high voltage winding may cause the maximum Von Mises stress of the windings rises under the short-circuit fault. But the eccentric distance has less influence on the maximum displacement of the winding, comparing with that influence on the maximum Von Mises stress of the windings. The results can provide reference for the design and maintenance of transformers.

Abstract:Transformer vibration mainly comes from the iron core vibration caused by the magnetostriction. Affect by the core structure, fastening conditions and the degree of insulation, etc., the core body vibration is very complicated. A vibration testing platform based on laser Doppler vibrometer was set up to get the vibration characteristics and surface distribution of a three-phase three-limb transformer core under different excitation voltages. The results show that the vibration of the core body mainly comes from magnetostriction, which includes 100 Hz fundamental frequency and higher order harmonic. The fundamental frequency of vibration and the square of the excitation voltage is approximately linear, and the high frequency vibration near the rated excitation voltage increases significantly. Uneven distribution of core vibration is proved, the maximum vibration is founded at the joints along the iron core. The core limbs together with the upper and lower yoke vibration show U-shaped distribution, and the trends can be more obvious as the voltage rises. The results of this paper provide a reference to the transformer core vibration reduction and vibration-based core fault diagnosis.

Abstract:Based on the characteristics of three-phase three-limb transformer magnetic circuit,the relationship among its inductances is analyzed,and a new mathematical model and an equivalent circuit model are proposed.The proposed model can reflect the structure characteristics of three-phase three-limb transformer magnetic circuit.Compared with existing three-phase three-limb transformer models,the new model can clearly demonstrate the roles of each current component in inducing winding voltage.The equivalent circuit model is more simple and intuitive than existing models and is easy for qualitative analysis and calculations.The proposed model is verified through comparison with the traditional nonlinear three-limb transformer model.As an example for application,the simplified calculation model for three-phase three-limb transformer with external faults is discussed.

Abstract:Due to the characteristics of three-phase three-limb transformer core topology, its magnetic flux can be represented by leakage inductances, column leakage inductances and mutual inductances. Based on this representation, a new equivalent circuit model of three-phase three-limb transformer is proposed in this paper. The distinguishing feature of the new model is that the operating mechanism of three-phase three-limb transformer can be expressed straightforwardly. With a simpler structure and fewer elements than the existing models, the proposed model is more convenient to be applied in qualitative analysis and calculations. The new model is validated through the comparison with the conventional nonlinear transformer model based on inductance matrix. As an example of application, the simplified fault current calculation model of three-phase three-limb transformer is introduced in this paper.

Abstract:For the numerical study of the electromagnetic forces acting on the end winding of large turbogenerators under different operating conditions,the mathematical model using three dimensional finite element was firstly investigated and implemented by using ANSYS commercial software.The details about the(transient) electromagnetic forces acting on the end windings of a 600 WM turbogenerator were reported and some conclusions were given,which may be valuable for engineering application.The research results show that the analysis lays the foundation for the futher more optimization of motor.

Abstract:As the key equipment of power plants and substations, transformers carry heavy responsibility of power transmission, distribution and transformation of voltage levels. Recent years, with the construction of UHV projects, the voltage level in China has increased to more than 1000kV and has formed several UHV networks, enhancing the reliability and efficiency of power supply. However, this also put more stringent requirements on the operation and maintenance of transformers. When a short-circuit fault occurs, the current flowing through transformer windings will be bigger than before, exerting larger electromagnetic forces on transformer windings, resulting in the collapse of the transformer structure. In that case, it is of great meaning and imperative to calculate short-circuit forces precisely.The finite element method can accurately obtain the magnetic field distribution in all parts of the windings, and plays an important role in the transformer design process. In order to calculate precise electromagnetic forces, this paper reviews the analytical method of electromagnetic force calculation firstly. And then, the three-dimensional and two-dimensional simulation are carried out by FEM. The short-circuit impedance of two-dimensional model and three-dimensional model are compared with measured one to verify the accuracy of these simulation models. Finally, the transient analysis of the two-dimensional model is carried out to obtain the variation laws of short-circuit electromagnetic forces applied to the windings with time. The short-circuit electromagnetic forces obtained through the above method is accurate and quickly. And it can provi de the necessary reference for the transformer design.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, the magnetic-structure-acoustic multi-physical field model of S13-M400/10 distribution transformer is established through the FEA software. The harmonic response analysis method is used to study the winding vibration and transmission characteristics of the transformer. The simulation results show that the flux leakage distribution of windings on each core column is mainly determined by the current flowing through these windings. The radial and axial acceleration distributions of the windings are U shape and M shape respectively along the winding height. The acceleration of B phase windings is smaller than that of A and C phase windings. The vibration of the oil tank surface is concentrated in its middle and lower part. The tank side vibration is mainly affected by the vibration of the nearest phase windings, while the tank front vibration is affected by the vibration of the three-phase windings together. This study is of great significance for further studies of the vibration characteristics of the transformer under unbalanced load and proposing the vibration reduction and noise reduction measures for the distribution transformer.

Abstract:The amorphous alloy transformer with three-dimensional wound core (TDWC) is a new type of transformer structure. Compared with the traditional three-phase five-column transformer with planar wound core (PWC), the TDWC structure exhibits a fully symmetrical magnetic circuit, resulting in enhanced short-circuit withstand capability. However, the vibration noise of the core becomes a significant engineering challenge in the design and manufacturing process due to the larger magnetostrictive coefficient of the amorphous alloy. This study establishes a magnetic-mechanical coupling mathematical model for amorphous alloy TDWC considering the magnetostrictive effect. Three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) is adopted to calculate the flux and vibration displacement distribution of the TDWC. Additionally, an experimental validation is conducted on a 200kVA amorphous alloy TDWC prototype to verify the accuracy of the model. Furthermore, a comparison with the PWC prototype demonstrates that the TDWC structure can effectively reduce surface vibrations, and the dominant frequency distribution law of vibration displacement at different positions of the TDWC structure is revealed, providing a foundation for the design of vibration reduction and noise control for TDWC.
