Abstract:Due to the low permeability layers formed around drainage plates under conditions of sew-age sludge vacuum preloading can decrease the dewatering efficiency,vacuum filtration installations and tests are used to simulate and study the inhibition effects on the low permeability layers, taking two methods of adding different chemical conditioners into the sludge above the filter ( 0 to 5 cm ) and changing pore-opening size of geotexiles. During the filtration process, cumulative amount of filtration(CAF),filtration rate(FR), and solid content(SC) are calculated;after the test, sludge re-sidual water content( SRWC) is obtained by slicing the sludge samples at different heights. The re-sults indicate that the enlargement of geotexile pore size can not improve the dewatering efficiency, and the low permeability layer are formed in 1 h after the test. The utilization of ferric chloride, lime , and fly ash at vicinity area of filter shows the best dewatering efficiency and inhibits the forma-tion of low permeability layer, getting a water content of 200% ( dry basis) at vicinity area of filter (0 to 3 cm) . And the conditioners of ferric chloride with cationic polyacrylamide or chitosan obtain a water content of 250% ( dry basis) at vicinity area of filter (0 to 3 cm) . In actual engineering, the combination of ferric chloride, lime, and fly ash can be used efficiently.

Abstract:The slurry produced by sand-washing engineering of excavated soil has the problems of poor dewatering property and instability, which are closely related to the dewatering performance of slurry. In this study, sand-washing slurry samples with different dewatering performances were obtained by simulating the field sand-washing process, then the modified filtration loss test and simulated pressure filtration test were carried out to study the influence of sand-washing process on the dewatering performance of sand-washing slurries, so as to find an index for rapid characterization of the dewatering performance of slurries, which can be used to guide the optimization of the sand-washing process. The results show that the dewatering performance of sand-washing slurry was significantly affected by the mesh size and the amount of water added. The filtration loss and hydraulic conductivity indicated a good correlation with the dewatering performance. In particular, the filtration loss at 30 minutes was nicely correlated with the final filtration loss and the final water content of filter cake, which can accurately reflect the dewatering performance. The results of simulated pressure filtration test further verify that the filtration loss at 30 minutes can be used as an index to quickly characterize the dewatering performance of slurries. Based on the above results, a method is put forward for rapid detection of sand-washing slurry dewatering and optimization of field sand-washing process. The method can provide guidance for the adjustment of sand-washing process parameters in time to obtain the sand-washing slurry with better dewatering performance, which can effectively improve and stabilize the dewatering effect.
Study On Consolidation Behaviors Of Waste Slurry By Using Vacuum Filtration Test

Abstract:Waste slurry is an inevitable product of construction and is characterized by high water content, high content of fine particles, high void ratio, and extremely low strength. Its treatment requires consideration of the economic and environmental implications. In this paper, vacuum filtration test was conducted indoor to investigate the effect of volume reduction and consolidation behaviors of waste slurry. The monitored parameters included the filtration rate, height of slurry surface, solid content of filtrate, and moisture content of slurry column after testing. The effect of vacuum filtration is remarkable: the volume of slurry (desanding) and slurry (with sand) decreased by 80% and 63.3% respectively after 10 days' test, the filtrate was comparatively clear and the solid content were only 0.17% and 0.14%, and the moisture content of the bottom of the slurry column was reduced to 53.31% and 45.97% respectively, which is equivalent to the moisture content of the soft soil.

Abstract:A vacuum-pumping deaerating device for hydraulic oil was designed.This device is based on the Henrys law.It can improve the bulk modulus of hydraulic oil and ameliorate the transmission rigidity and precision of hydraulic system.Simulation study of balancing the pressure of oil tank was carried out using the simulator of AMESim.The results show that the piston pressure accumulator in this device plays a role in stabling tank pressure and absorbing the pressure pulsations availably.

Case Studies in Thermal Engineering

Abstract:Higher efficiency, lower energy consumption and less pollution are become more and more important in chemical engineering. Post-process is one of the key parts for producing chemical productions. Thus, we develop a novel device, Chemical Post-Processing Integrated Equipment (CPPIE), which can deal with crystallization, filtration, washing and drying in the same tank by changing the position of it. Without the transfer during these processes, CPPIE have meaningful advantages compared to conventional devices. In this paper, the structure and the working procedure of CPPIE are introduced, and Diaphragm press drying device (DPDD) in CPPIE is further described. Then, the experimental setup is arranged. Its drying and energy consumption performances are experimentally investigated. The performance of DPDD is analyzed experimentally with theory to validate it can meet the requirements of industrial applications. Furthermore, the energy consumption for the whole processes is calculated with experimental data. Compared to CPPIE without DPDD, CPPIE with DPDD has energy conservation about 25%. This work presents the feasibility of CPPIE, the advantage of DPDD for drying process with lower energy consumption, which can be referenced for designing similar integrated equipment.

Abstract:It is difficult to detect cake moisture content on-line in plate-and-frame filter press (PFP), so the automatic shutdown control of a plate-and-frame filter press system is generally designed and operated by experience. The rate of exhaust water was chosen as an on-line monitoring indicator to design an automatic control system for a PFP on the basis of on-site monitoring data. It is shown that the new-built system operates automatically and can save more than 15%of the compressed air volume, which indicates that the automatic control system contributes to a better dewatering system.

Abstract:The optimization of operation parameters in ultrafiltration process is of importance in fully exploitation of its advantages. In this paper, the erythromycin broth filter-press-filtrate filtrate was used as a model solution to be ultrafiltrated by using a hollow-fiber membrane. The pumping rate, operation pressure, concentration ratio and temperature were optimized. The comparison among various optimization methods was also discussed. The results are universal, and should be also useful on other application areas of ultrafiltration process.

Abstract:Recently, the disposal of high-water-content dredged sludge through geotextile tubes with vacuum-assisted prefabricated horizontal drains (PHD) has gained growing popularity for its convenience and efficiency. However, existing simulations for this typical coupled filtration-consolidation process using conventional consolidation models exhibit deficiencies due to the absence of effective stress and invalidity of Darcy’s law in the particle-wandering filtration phase. In this study, based on the compressional rheology theory, a two-dimensional coupled filtration-consolidation model constituted by the compressive yield stress Py(ϕ) and hindered setting factor r(ϕ) is developed to elucidate the solid-solid and solid-fluid interactions during slurry dewatering. A novel approach for measuring consistent Py(ϕ) and r(ϕ) relationships is proposed. The numerical solution is derived utilizing the alternating direction implicit (ADI) difference method and verified against a classical one-dimensional compressional rheology model and a field trial. Further analysis suggests that constitutive parameters, e.g., gel point, affect the dewatering efficiency by determining the relative degree of soil disorder, obstruction to particle movement, and vacuum transmission effect, while design parameters, e.g., PHD spacing and tube height, impact the magnitude and radiation range of vacuum pressure to influence the overall efficiency.
Influence of operation conditions on filtration rate in ultrafiltratin system of dyeing and printing wastewater

Abstract:The treatment before reuse of wastewater from a dyeing and printing plant is studied.Under the constant pressure,the wastewater is filtered by polyethylene hollow-membrane which is intermittently cleaned by aeration and tractive current,and the influence of operational conditions on the filtration rate is analyzed.The result shows that aeration plays a positive role in anti-pollution of membrane.Relieving the suction force on the particles first and then adopting aeration tractive current may enhance the tractive current effectiveness.Difference between the results from cyclic operation and noncyclic operation is significant and the effectiveness is followed the sequence as(aeration filtration-pause-aeration tractive current)<(no aeration filtration-pause-aeration tractive current)<(continuous aeration tractive current).Thus the filtration rate can be resumed by the cyclic operation in certain degrees.In the course of filtrating of dyeing and printing wastewater,if the suction pressure is less than 0.08 MPa,the compressibility of cake can be ignorable.
Optimization Control for Ultra Filtration Membrane Separated-Machine

Abstract:By simplifying process, an ultra filtration membrane separated-machine is developed, which has many characters, such as high-lavel automation, good operation stability, convenient human-machine operation interface, dynamic simulation function, state on-line display function and so on. According to the principle of separation by ultra filtration membrane, the machine is researched in which optimization control technique is used for processing separation by ultra filtration membrane, in order to raise the speed of separation by ultra filtration, decrease energy consume, increase utilization of material and obtain the largest profits by controlling main parameters (pressure, flux, temperature) in the separation process. The machine is used in separation processing for cushaw amylose solution. Average profits are increased 9.2 percents when operates undor the best condition(0.25 MPa,625 mL/min,40 ℃)to produce.
Research on Effect Mechanism of Cyclic Flow on Filtration System

Abstract:A cyclic flow device is developed to study the effect mechanism of sine flow with different frequency on filtration system. A differential equation of pore water pressure accordant with the test model is built; and its analytic solution is achieved. Theoretical analyses show that the smaller ratio between the consolidation coefficient of soil and the frequency of cyclic flow leads to the higher hydraulic gradient on the border of soil and the lower hydraulic gradient inside the soil. Test results show that when the period of the cyclic flow is 0.5min, the amplitude of hydraulic gradient near to the border of the soil is nearly double of the average amplitude of the filtration system. When the period of the cyclic flow is 62.5 min, the phenomenon of hydraulic gradient focusing is neglectable. Test results show good accordance with the analytical results. The phenomenon of hydraulic gradient focusing will lead to more filtration border erosion and it will diminish the stability of the filtration system. Proper attention shall be paid to this phenomenon in the filtration engineering.

Abstract:In recent years, pleated cartridge filters have been widely used in the process of industrial production. However, most of the existing studies are focused on the structure optimization design of filters, and there are few studies on the effects of two important factors, namely, particle size and maximum pressure drop, on the performance of filters. So, in this study, the effects of two factors on the filtration and pulse-jet cleaning performance of pleated cartridge filter were investigated through experiments. For the same maximum pressure drop, both average and average residual pressure drops are reduced with the rise of particle size, and meanwhile both the number of pulse-jet cleaning and the average dust emission concentration decrease, which improves the dust collection efficiency. For the same particle size, both average and average residual pressure drops are reduced with the decrease of maximum pressure, but both the number of pulse-jet cleaning and the average dust emission concentration are increased, which lowers the dust collection efficiency. Abstract:Dewatering fine-grained materials is a common procedure in various industries. Nevertheless, the theory regarding the dewatering of fine-grained materials is largely confined to laboratory studies and some empirical and semi-empirical formulas. Most studies primarily concentrate on describing macroscopic phenomena. A positive pressure filtration device is introduced, and the effect of particle size during the process of filtration and dehydration is analyzed. The results show that the positive pressure horizontal filtration process is accompanied by interfering sedimentation, which results in the characteristic of a coarse filter cake at the lower part and a fine filter cake at the upper part. In the case of dewatering flotation coal filtration, high pressure assists in overcoming the adhesive force and surface tension of water, facilitating water discharge. The "air drainage" effect leads to variations in moisture levels in different parts. This study theoretically analyzes the positive pressure filtration sedimentation and its impact on particle size, the retention mechanism of capillary dewatering and coarse and heavy particles, as well as the air pressure dewatering mechanism. This study is of great significance for the design and development of new equipment for dewatering fine-grained materials with independent intellectual property rights.

Abstract:The flocculation–solidification–filter-press combined method is a new type of method for treating waste slurry that combines flocculation and chemical curing with a mechanical filter press. Among these processes, the mechanical filter-press process is key to the efficient disposal of waste engineering slurries by the flocculation–solidification–filter-press combined method. In the mechanical filter-press process, parameters including the initial thickness of filtration mud, the magnitude of filtration pressure, and the duration of press filtration have important impacts on the dewatering and strength after subsequent curing. In this work, a series of laboratory tests were conducted to study the influence of filter-press parameters on flocculated–solidified mud by measuring the properties of treated and cured mud. The test results showed that the initial mud bag thickness is an important factor in the mud treatment effect. As the initial mud bag thickness increases, the greater the water content of the mud at the end of the filter-press process after applying the same amount of time and the same amount of pressure, the lower the post-conservation strength will be. The increase in filtration pressure and filtration time within a certain range can reduce the water content of the mud brick after filtration and significantly improve its shear strength. In the actual process of filtering in the project, the thickness of the initial mud bag should be no more than 140 mm, the filtration pressure is about 0.35 MPa, and the filtration time is suitable for 2 min.

Abstract:Abstract The reverse circulation drilling method is now widely accepted as an effective way of exploration and grade control. However, the performance of reverse circulation drilling operations is greatly affected by the filtration effect (lost circulation) and no research has critically addressed this issue. In this study, a simulation experiment was conducted, the filtration effect was quantified as the mass of water loss measured at a flow rate of 4.00 m 3 /h to 8.00 m 3 /h for reverse and forward circulation drilling. Then the dynamic filtration effect was analyzed in three ways; first, a filtration versus circulation flow rate curve was obtained for both the forward and reverse circulation process. Second, the positive and negative effect of hydrodynamics on filtration was analyzed through a computational fluid dynamic approach, and finally, via qualitative analyses. The results showed that: (1) An optimal flow rate occurred when the filtration effect was minimum, (2) There is a point where the positive and negative effect of the increase in flow rate on filtration is the same, and (3) filtration monotonously increases with flow rate. This study provides a better understanding of the effect of filtration during the reverse circulation drilling process, a guide to field experts, and a theoretical framework for future research.

Abstract:In order to study the best working performance of a wet filter dust collector (WFDC), a small WFDC was designed and manufactured in the laboratory. Firstly, by studying the filter parameters that affect the performance of the WFDC, the best operating conditions under a single filter parameter were obtained. Secondly, a multi-factor orthogonal experiment was designed to evaluate the dust removal performance of the WFDC. The results of laboratory studies showed that when the spray pressure was 0.8 MPa, the filtration velocity was 7.9 m/s, and the filtration precision was 40 mesh; the total dust efficiency and respirable dust efficiency were 98.47

Abstract:Treatment of waste drilling slurries has become one of the important problems encountered in urban construction. The application of pressure filtration technology brings significant advantages in slurries treatment. In order to give a better insight into the mechanism of pressure filtration, a model was introduced to analyze the relationship between filtration pressure, time and treatment results. The proposed model was validated using existing data. The parametric studies of the model show that the increase of the filtration pressure can reduce the filtration time and the permeability coefficient of the filter cake, While filtration time decreases very slowly beyond a certain extent. In addition, the relationship among filtration pressure, time and treatment results is further validated by test results.

Dewatering of High Organic Sludge by Biochemical Conditioning Combined with Vertical Filter Press: a Case Analysis

Abstract:Due to that the continuous growth of global sludge production has caused serious environmental problems, the reduction and harmless treatment of sludge is imperative. Taking an actual sludge dewatering project based on biochemical conditioning and vertical filter press in a sewage treatment plant of Guangdong's Dongguan as an example, this study minimized sludge water content and control economic cost without adding lime by regulating the optimal proportion of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), polyacrylamide (PAM), and polymeric aluminum ferric chloride (PAFC). The results demonstrate that the system runs stably for 190 days, the average water content decreases to 61.59%, and the direct running cost of sludge dewatering is 94.13 yuan/ton under optimal conditioning scheme of 2.5‰ PAM + 1.5‰ LAB + 2.0‰ PAFC. Our study effectively reduces the sludge water content while controlling cost, which can also provide practical engineering reference and theoretical basis for the combined application of biochemical conditioning and vertical filter press for sludge dewatering.
