Abstract:Flexible fabric formworks and bespoke Wound Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (W-FRP) cages have been proposed to address the difficulties of constructing geometrically optimised concrete structures with minimised material consumptions. However, the existing codes of practice for FRP reinforced concrete structures are not able to provide accurate shear behaviour predictions, resulting in potential premature anchorage failure. This paper presents a revised shear design approach for non-prismatic beams reinforced with W-FRP based on the Modified Compression Field Theory (MCFT), which considers the non-prismatic geometries, geometrical nonlinearity and internal load redistributions. The revised shear design approach is calibrated against previous fabric-formed T beam tests and parametric analyses are conducted to minimise the material usage of the previous T-beams. The validity of the shear design approach is further confirmed with a new T-beam test. The new test shows that the T beam designed with the MCFT based approach failed in the expected flexural failure mode with an ultimate capacity of 245 kN applied load. The predictions can effectively model the bar force development of the inclined flexural reinforcement with a Normalised Root Mean Square Error (NRSME) of 4.4%. The proposed shear design method improved the prediction accuracy of flexural bar force at ultimate capacity by 40% compared to the codified shear design method. By addressing the shear contributions of inclined flexural reinforcement and required anchorage strength, further applications of this novel flexibly formed beams with optimised geometries are expected to achieve material consumption reduction and hence lower carbon emissions from concrete structures.

Abstract:An optimal design problem of long span steel-concrete composite floor system was investigated based on important parameters to aim at the economical and applicable conditions and optimizing orientations of long span steel-concrete composite floor. The objective function was set as economical equivalent steel consumption, and the variables contained eight parameters including dimensions of the steel section, intermediate distance between steel sections and thickness of concrete slab. The objective function was constrained to the plastic theory, standards and construction experience. The generalized reduced gradient method (GRG) was used to generate optimal sections with minimum economical equivalent steel consumption under different spans and live loads. According to the optimization results, the composite floor within a span of 60 m and a variable load of 6 kN/m2 could efficiently facilitate the composite effect of composite structure and has good economic benefits. As for super-long span composite floor when the traditional I-section floor system is not economically suitable, the composite floor with corrugated web is recommended for improving the bearing efficiency of steel web. A new cable-supported composite floor system was proposed based on the cable-supported beam for its high efficiency in mechanism.
Study on design of binate diagonal mega-bracing system for a high-rise steel building

Abstract:The structural system and its characteristics of a high-rise steel building are introduced.The building adopted a binate diagonal mega-bracing system in which two pieces of vertical trusses are in one vertical plane,between them there are one or three spans in which no bracing members are used.Analysis results revealed that this system may carry gravitational loads,and the beams at the bracing joints carry large axial forces which need to be taken care of in the design.Under earthquake action,the unbraced spans take the role of energy-dissipating members as in the EBF(Ecentricity bracing frame) system with long link beams.The beams in the unbraced spans need to design with reference to the requirements on EBF.Other design details are also provided.

Abstract:A new type of steel concrete composite beam with double-joist steel sections encased was introduced.Six large-scale specimens were designed and tested under four-point bending condition to study the performance indicators of normal section bending bearing capacity, deformation, ductility and ultimate curvature and ultimate bending moment.It was found that the double-steel reinforced concrete beam had high strength and well ductility.The cracking load and ultimate load of the beam were influenced by the steel ratio, rebar ratio, stirrup ratio, steel size, space, and shear studs.Based on the comparison of the test results and through correcting coefficient of concrete part and the whole part in two Chinese codes, the bending calculation formula of double-steel reinforced concrete beam was obtained.
Analytical Study On Buckling Restrained Braced Composite Frames

Abstract:Analytical study on the seismic behaviour of bolt-endplate connected concrete filled tube column (CFT) and steel beam composite frames with buckling restrained braces (BRBs) is being conducted. The objective of this study is to investigate the seismic performance of this type of frame and to evaluate existing design criteria. According to China-related design standards and displacement-based design procedures, a 10-story prototype building was designed with buckling restrained braced frames (BRBFs) as the lateral load resisting system. The columns in this frame are CFT members and the beams are structural steel sections. A planar BRBF was extracted from the prototype building for analysis. The analysis software SAP2000 was used to model the prototype frame including material and geometric nonlinearities and nonlinear time history analyses were conducted using an ensemble of ground motions. The earthquake records were scaled to three different seismic input levels: frequent occurrence earthquake (FOE), design basis earthquake (DBE), and maximum considered earthquake (MCE). Acceptable BRBF behaviour was observed at different seismic input levels. A large-scale BRBF experimental investigation with substructure pseudo dynamic test technique is planned. This paper presents the results of the analytical study and briefly summarizes the upcoming experimental program.

Abstract:This study focuses on developing fully prefabricated glued laminated bamboo (glubam)-concrete composite (BCC) beams constructed of the innovative ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC)-steel composite connectors. Five mid-scale prefabricated BCC beams with different connectors and concrete slabs were tested under short-term loading conditions to evaluate the flexural behavior. Particular emphasis was placed on verifying the convenience and deconstructablity of the proposed assembly structure through a secondary assembly and loading process, revealing that the prefabricated BCC has the advantage of rapid assembly construction and appreciable reusability. This assembly structure exhibits favorable bending performance under short-term loading conditions and it shows partial composite action. Reducing spacing and enhancing shear resistance of the UHPC-steel composite connector effectively improves the flexural behavior of BCC beams. In addition, casting a layer of laminated lightweight aggregate concrete with 30 mm thick on site can enhance the bending performance of the prefabricated BCC beam with effective control of the increase in its self-weight. Typical load capacity models derived from timber-concrete composite (TCC) beam were evaluated by the test results for predicting the load capacity of the prefabricated BCC structure. A comparison and evaluation were conducted on six large-scale BCC beams connected by different connectors, indicating that the proposed fully prefabricated BCC system possesses superior competitive advantages compared with existing BCC/TCC beams and it has a good application prospect in building engineering.
Seismic Behaviors of High-Strength Bolted End-Plate Connected Composite Steel Beam and Square Concrete Filled Steel Tube Column Frames

Abstract:Utilizing sub-structure methodology,pseudo-dynamic tests, a quasi-static test and a static pushover test were conducted on a two-story and one and a half bay frame, with composite steel beams and concrete filled steel tube (CFT) columns connected by high-strength bolts and end plates. The 4∶ 7 scale sub-assemblage frame simulated a portion of a 10 stories and 3 spans plane frame. Seismic performance of the CFT composite frame including failure pattern, displacement response, hysteretic behavior and energy dissipation capability were investigated. During pseudo-dynamic test, the stiffness of tested frame had little degradation for frequent occurrence earthquake, and the stiffness dropped by about 13% for design basis earthquake, and the stiffness reduced 20% however the story drift ratio was less than 2.0% for maximum considered earthquake. Initial local buckling at beam and first story column ends was detected after the story drift ratio exceeding 1.6% during pseudo-static test, while no global strength degradation occurred. Even when the story drift ratio exceeding 6.0% during pushover test, the frame could still develop sufficient lateral loading capacity. The high-strength bolted end-plate connections satisfied the requirements of aseismic design and were suggested to be designed as rigid connections within the drift limitation of related code. It is validated that the moment resistant frame with steel beams bolted to CFT columns can provide excellent seismic behaviors and has the potential to be utilized in buildings in earthquake regions.

Abstract:In order to investigate the seismic behavior of assembled steel beam-PC column composite frames in medium and high seismic regions,two large scale beam-column-footing frame subassemblies were tested under cyclic horizontal loading.The main experimental results were presented and discussed.In the two test subassemblies,steel beams were connected to the precast columns by endplates and post-tensioned high strength bolts.The precast columns were connected to the footings through mechanical couplers and dowel anchorage methods respectively.Test results indicate that the test subassemblies can exhibit excellent strength and stiffness retention capacity even when the layer displacement ductility factor reaches 5.0.The assembled steel beam-PC column composite frames can be designed for resisting seismic load in terms of strength,drift ductility,and post-yield deformation capacity.In addition,the influences of the two different column-footing connection types are evaluated.

Abstract:In this study, a novel floor system with horizontal K-shaped braces was applied to long-span high-speed railway steel truss cable-stayed bridges to reduce the crossbeams' out-plane bending moment which is significant in the traditional stringer-crossbeam floor system. Based on the new floor system of Beijiang Bridge, a 1:4 scaled floor system specimen was experimentally tested; subsequently, two detailed finite element (FE) models for comparison of the specimen were established to investigate the stress distributions, force transferring and deformation characteristics. Furthermore, the ratio formula of the longitudinal force transmitted by the K-braces to that by crossbeam was determined. The results of the comparative analysis of FE models indicate that the horizontal K-shaped brace can reduce 81.0% of the crossbeam's maximum stress caused by the out-plane bending moment and alleviate the longitudinal deformations. The measured stresses of the model increased linearly with the applied load from 0.4 to 2.2 times the maximum tension force cases. The K-shaped brace mainly bears axial force; additionally, the out plane bending moment of the crossbeam is small. The longitudinal force transmission ratio is determined by the geometric parameters of the floor system structure, such as section area Ak of the K-shaped brace, and the distance between the side stringer and the lower chord Lc (rather than load type or value). The longitudinal force transmission ratio calculated by experimental and numerical stresses were in the ranges of 1.35 to 6.46 and 1.39 to 7.30, respectively. This indicates that the horizontal K-shaped brace transmits 57.45 to 86.60 % and 58.16 to 87.95 % of the longitudinal force, for experimental and normal stresses, respectively. The similar ratio ranges in both cases reveal that the K-shaped brace can effectively transfer longitudinal forces, reduce the out-plane moment of the crossbeam, and improve the mechanical characteristic of the floor system.

Abstract:This paper optimizes the design of a novel large-span cable-supported steel–concrete composite floor system in a simply supported single-span, single-strut configuration, aiming for cost-effective solutions and minimal steel consumption. The optimization considers various cross-sectional dimensions, adhering to building standards and engineering practices, and is based on a non-linear programming (NLP) algorithm. Parameters of live loads ranging from 2 to 10 kN/m2 and spans from 20 to 100 m are considered. The optimization results show that cable-supported composite floors with a single strut exhibit robust economic feasibility for spans of less than 80 m and live loads under 8 kN/m2. Compared to conventional composite floors with welded I-beams, the cable-supported system offers more cost-effective cross-sections and reduces steel consumption. The savings in economically equivalent steel consumption range from 20% to 60%. Discussion on the area ratio of cables to steel beam in the optimal cross-section reveals that the secondary load-bearing system (i.e., bending of the main beam with an effective span length of L/2) may require more steel in cases of ultra-large spans. Therefore, the economical efficiency of cable-supported composite beams with multiple struts and smaller effective span lengths warrants further exploration in future studies.

Abstract:To satisfy the clear height requirement,the span-to-height ratios of 20.4 and 22.7 were adopted for the simply supported reinforced concrete secondary floor beams with span of 12.245m and 10.225m respectively for tower A and B of Beijing Goldfield Center.The design of these large span-to-height ratio and large span secondary floor beams is presented.To study the behavior of the secondary beams under the serviceability limit state,field test of a full scale specimen was carried out and calculation was performed according to design codes.The results show that both crack width and vertical deflection can meet the code requirements.Based on the test results,recommendations are presented for design and construction.The structures of tower A and B have been completed and no obvious cracks on the secondary floor beams have been found.

Abstract:Considering semi-rigid connections, a 3-D FEM was established to simulate the fastener-style tubular steel formwork-support and the analysis was performed together with an experimental study of the torsion stiffness of right couplers. Both the linear and nonlinear buckling techniques were employed to determine the stability of the formwork-supports. In the nonlinear analytical model, Initial imperfection, plastic behavior and large deflection response of the formwork-supports were taken into account. Numerical results indicated the linear buckling loads were higher than that obtained from the nonlinear stability analysis. Nonlinear buckling analysis was employed to calculate the stability bearing capacity for cases of different design variables, and then the results were converted into effective length coefficients that are generally used in practice. The influence factors on the stability bearing capacity were studied. It was pointed out that the effects of initial imperfection and semi-rigid connection on the stability bearing capability are important, also a bolt tightening torque of 40 N·m was found to be quite reasonable.

Abstract:At present, the development of green building materials is imminent. Traditional wood structures show low strength and are easy to crack. Steel structures are also prone to instability. A novel rectangular-section composite beam from the welded thin-walled H-shape steel/camphor pine was proposed in this work. The force deformation, section strain distribution law, and damage mechanism of the combined beam were studied to optimize the composite beam design, clarify the stress characteristics, present a more reasonable and more efficient cross-section design, and promote green and environmental protection techniques. Furthermore, the effect of different factors such as steel yield strength, H-type steel web thickness, H-type steel web height, H-type steel flange thickness, H-type steel upper flange covered-board thickness, and combined beam width was investigated. The ABAQUS simulation with the finite element software was also performed and was verified through empirical experiments. According to the results: (1) the damage process of the composite beam was divided into three steps, namely elastic stage, elastic–plastic step, and destruction stage, and the cross-middle section strain met the flat section assumption; (2) additionally, the bond connection was reliable, the two deformations were consistent, and the effect of the combination was significant. The study of the main factors showed that an increase in the yield strength, the H-type steel web height, the steel H-beam upper flange thickness, and the combined beam width caused a significant enhancement in the bending bearing capacity. The combined beam led to high bending stiffness, high bending bearing capacity, and good ductility under bending.

Abstract:The design of a 60m span and heavy duty crane beam in a structure is introduced,which is also treated as the support to the roof structure,so it is difficult to be replaced.The initial design for the beam is a truss,and final design changes to I-shape solid-wed beam.The analysis of the fatigue performance and the utilization of material shows that the truss design has obvious disadvantages and the final design could well tackle these problems.

Abstract:A comparative study of composite floor systems with I-beams and corrugated web beams is performed based on non-linear programming (NLP) algorithm. The optimization is conducted to find the most economical design with minimum steel consumption considering variables associated with the cross-sectional dimensions and multiple constraints from standards, specifications and engineering practices. Various parameters of live loads ranging from 2 to 10 kN/m2 and spans ranging from 20 to 100 m are considered. The optimization results reveal that composite floors with corrugated web beams have reasonable and economical cross-sections with less steel consumption, owing to the high performance of the corrugated web in shear resistance and stability. Further comparative studies show that composite floors with corrugated web beams are economically competitive for spans larger than 30 m with a steel saving of 20–60%, and composite floors with welded I-beams can be applicable for spans less than 30 m considering the simpler configuration and construction. In addition, a spatially structured cable-supported steel–concrete composite floor system is proposed and recommended for super-large-span floor structures considering the cost-effectiveness of the analyzed floor systems reduces as the span further increases.

Abstract:In the column strengthening under the beam support, for the columns with large section size, heavy load, and defects, a new type of load transfer system (LTS) was proposed: the bracket-type vertical load transfer system of reinforced concrete, which is composed of supporting columns. For the supporting columns on the load-leading layer, taking the column bottom pressure force and pressure distribution curves of the cross sections as two analytical indexes, the load transfer mechanism of the LTS was studied through finite element simulation. The net distance between the supporting column and the original column and the horizontal lap length ratio between the supporting columns were two important parameters, which mainly affected the variation law of the bottom pressure force. For the part of the frame beam between the supporting column and the original column, the critical position of its deformation form has been obtained, so that the maximum limit of the net distance was determined. The pressure distribution curves showed that the load transfer was in the form of an inner arched path. Through the engineering application, the real-time monitoring showed that the LTS could satisfactorily complete the load transfer work.
New Performance-Based Plastic Design and Evaluation of Blind Bolted End-Plate CFT Composite Frames with BRBs

Abstract:The blind bolted end-plate connection to concrete-filled steel tube column (BECFT) composite frame with buckling-restrained braces (BRBs, BRB-BECFT) is a novel dual structure system that combines advantages of fast assembly ability for BECFT connections, great energy dissipation capacity for BRBs coupled with BECFT connections and superior gravity load-carrying capacity for concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) columns. Given authors' prior experimental and theoretical studies on the BRB-BECFT structure system, and as no design method is as far introduced for this system with adequate accuracy, a new plastic design procedure based on the modified energy balance and global yield mechanism in the framework of performance-based plastic design method was proposed. The post-yielding stiffness and overall yield inter-story drift of the BRB-BECFT structure system was considered to improve the accuracy of the design base shear. Meanwhile, the BRB-BECFT structure system was decomposed into the BRB system and BECFT frame system to simplify the design process. Moreover, some formulae to avoid structural adverse yield mechanism were derived. The semi-rigid characteristic of BECFT connections was introduced into the structural global yield mechanism by work-energy principle to ensure the deformation consistency between inter-story drift and BECFT connection rotation. Finally, four prototype structures with 6, 9, 12 and, 20 stories were designed as examples to illustrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed design method. The results of nonlinear time-history analyses showed that the designed structures successfully achieved the pre-selected performance objectives in terms of the inter-story drift, residual drift, BECFT connection rotation, and BRB ductility demands.
