Abstract:In this paper the mixing ratio, physical and mechanical properties of polymer-modified concrete with UP Polymer (UP-modified concrete) studied. The hydration and hardening properties of UP-modified concrete and the possibility of its practical application in the emergent repair of highway were investigated. Experiment results show that UP-modified concrete possesses a high early-stage strength, good durability, especially the 28 days flexural strength can reach 20MPa, furthermore, and there is no phenomenon of drawback. Therefore UP-modified concrete can meet the requirements of emergent repair of road, especially for road surface which have different height in different parts and other surface defects of highway, the concrete of bridge joints and structure where high flexural strength is needed. So it shows a significant application potential in above-mentioned field.
Experimental Study on the Mechanical Properties and Durability of High-Content Hybrid Fiber-Polymer Concrete

Abstract:Polymer-modified concrete and fiber concrete are two excellent paving materials that improve the performance of some concrete, but the performance of single application material is still limited. In this paper, polymer-modified concrete with strong deformation and fiber concrete with obvious crack resistance and reinforcement effect were compounded by using the idea of composite material design so as to obtain a high-performance pavement material. The basic mechanical properties of high-content hybrid fiber-polymer-modified concrete, such as workability, compression, flexural resistance, and environmental durability (such as sulfate resistance) were studied by using the test regulations of cement concrete in China. The main results were as follows. (1) The hybrid fiber-polymer concrete displayed reliable working performance, high stiffness, and a modulus of elasticity as high as 35.93 GPa. (2) The hybrid fiber-polymer concrete had a compressive strength of 52.82 MPa, which was 31.2% higher than that of the plain C40 concrete (40.25 MPa); the strength of bending of the hybrid concrete was 11.51 MPa, 191.4% higher than that of the plain concrete (3.95 MPa). (3) The corrosion resistance value of the hybrid fiber-polymer concrete was 81.31%, indicating its adjustability to sulfate attack environments. (4) According to cross-sectional scanning electron microscope (SEM) images, the hybrid fiber-polymer concrete was seemingly more integrated with a dense layer of cementing substance on its surface along with fewer microholes and microcracks as when compared to the ordinary concrete. The research showed that hybrid fiber-polymer concrete had superior strength and environmental erosion resistance and was a pavement material with superior mechanical properties.

Abstract:Polymer-modified cementitious repair materials have gained attention as innovative and environmentally friendly construction materials due to their superior water retention, adhesion, freeze-thaw resistance, corrosion resistance, air permeability, and shrinkage resistance compared to ordinary repair materials. Adding a small amount of polymer can alter the concrete microstructure and form a composite material through the interaction between polymer film formation and cement hydration. This review shows that adding a certain percentage of polymers to concrete can improve the physical, fresh properties, durability, mechanical properties and microstructural development of concrete and improve the effectiveness of concrete repair treatment of underground structures. The discovery of different types and amounts of polymer cement from both physical and chemical perspectives can significantly enhance the performance of cement mortar. Various modifications, such as fibers and nanomaterials are explored to improve the properties of polymer cement for optimal treatment results. Finally, this paper summarizes key findings and provides recommendations for future research.

Abstract:Concrete, in particular application scenarios, such as crack repair, disaster rescue and relief, and 3D printing, needs to be cured quickly. In this work, a novel synthesis strategy, UV-initiated frontal polymerization (FP), for fast preparation of high-strength polymer concrete at room temperature is proposed, and the whole fabrication progress within several minutes, in which coarse aggregates and a small amount of short carbon fibers (CF) are used to enhance mechanical properties and heat conduction and reduce the amounts of chemical adhesives. SEM, DSC, MIP, Ultra depth of field microscope, and Rheometer are employed to characterize the properties of chemical adhesives, polymer concrete, and polymerization process. In addition, the finite element method is used to investigate the internal temperature field status of the FP process. The results indicate that the compressive and flexural strengths of the polymer concrete with 1.0 wt%-1 mm-CF-50 vol.%-quartz sand exceeded 70 and 20 MPa, respectively, in which the average self-propagation velocity reached 58 mm min-1. Abstract:Polypropylene fibrous concrete is a new kind of composite material. Polypropylene fiber leads to an increase in the resisting strength, cracking resistance performance, resistance to impact performance and permeability reducing performance of the concrete, thus reduces the shrinking and deformation of the concrete. This paper uses the method of numerical analysis, assisted by the software of finite element analysis, makes both static and dynamic analysis on the polypropylene fibrous concrete ditch with different volume mixing. It results in the stress and strain table of the head and base plates of the polypropylene fibrous concrete ditch in the case of 0.1%, 0.5%, and 1% volume mixing of polypropylene fibers. The paper provides technological basis for formation design of the polypropylene fibrous concrete materials, and laids technological foundation for the further developments of polypropylene fibrous concrete in hydraulic engineering.

Abstract:The properties of a large number of concrete infrastructures in China are deteriorating year by year, raising the need for repairing and strengthening these infrastructures. By introducing waterborne polymers into a cement concrete system, brittle cracks and easy bonding performance defects of concrete can be compensated for to form a long-life, semi rigid, waterborne polymer-modified cementitious repair material with a promising development prospect. This paper investigates the modification effect of polymer emulsions on ordinary cement mortar. Our research mainly focused on the physical and mechanical properties, durability, microstructure and application status of waterborne polymer-modified cementitious composites. Literature studies show that with the increase in waterborne polymer content (0 wt%~20 wt%), the performance of cement mortar significantly improves, which in turn expands its application range. Compared with ordinary cement mortar, the introduction of waterborne polymers blocks some of the pores in the cement to a certain extent, thus improving its permeability, freeze–thaw resistance and durability. Finally, this paper describes the application of waterborne polymer–cementitious composites in western saline soil environments, as well as discusses the prospects of their development.

Abstract:Cement concrete has an increasing utilization in highway construction. However, the lower flexural tensile strength and abrasion-resistance restricted the development of concrete pavement with heavy traffic. Hence, It has highlighted the need for research on high performance concrete (HPC). The design of specific concrete normally depends on the mixing of mineral admixtures in concrete mixture. This paper presents the first experimental study on strength and abrasion-resistance enhancement admixture (SAEA) mixed with slag powder, steel slag powder and silica fume. The optimal proportion of three mineral admixture and reasonable mixed amount of SAEA were then given, and the mechanism of SAEA reacted in concrete was analyzed based on sol-gel theory. Lastly, the effect of concrete mixed with SAEA was validated and the micro-structure transformation of specimens was given by SEM.

Abstract:At present, China has entered the peak stage of large-scale maintenance, but repair materials for asphalt pavement potholes are subjected to problems, such as low construction efficiency and poor durability. Polyurethane modified epoxy acrylic resin was selected in this study to repair pavement potholes rapidly and improve durability further. Meanwhile, the cementing material and aggregate were formed into a mixture for rapid repair. A four-factor and four-level orthogonal experiment was designed, and the optimal mass ratio of each component of the cementing material (EPMY) was determined according to three indexes: tensile strength, elongation at break, and viscosity. The basic properties of the material were evaluated using viscosity, glass transition temperature, thermal stability, and elastic recovery rate tests. Finally, the mechanical properties of EPMY immersed in water, salt, acid, and oil solutions were tested under different environmental stimuli. Results showed that the optimal mass ratio of epoxy resin binder is 100% epoxy acrylic resin:15% diluent:30% toughening agent:60% curing agent:6% accelerant, with a tensile strength of 21.48 MPa and an elongation at break of 48.3% at ?10 °C. Elastic recovery rate is 51.3% at room temperature, glass transition temperature is ?13.6 °C, and mass residual rate of EPMY is 10.06% when the temperature rises to 500 °C. The mechanical properties of EPMY are maximally affected by the acidic solution; and the elongation at break, bending strength, and bending deformation are reduced by 11.63%, 7.52%, and 9.58%, respectively. Moreover, and the elongation at break of EPMY can be maintained above 89%. The cementing material can be used for the rapid repair of pavement potholes, thereby increasing the convenience of maintenance work and improving the maintenance level. Abstract:The internally cured material known as superabsorbent polymer (SAP) is an important innovation in concrete engineering technology. This paper investigates the effect of adding a polymer with superabsorbent capabilities on the physical and mechanical performance of concrete. The microstructure of the new hybrid concrete was also studied, and the influence of the polymer particle size and volume on the mechanical durability was evaluated. The mechanical properties of the new hybrid concrete, such as compressive strength, flexural strength, elastic modulus, and splitting tensile strength, were measured through laboratory experiments. The microstructure characteristics of the concrete were also investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that shrinkage was reduced, while the volume stability of the concrete improved. Moreover, we found that cracking was reduced, while issues such as chloride penetration and freeze-thaw resistance were also improved. In addition, the SAP could effectively improve the microstructure of the concrete and refine the pore structure, as seen in the microscopic test. This paper helps to promote the development of internally cured material and improve technology for the prevention of concrete construction cracks.

This study investigates the mechanical performance of the fiber-reinforced geopolymer concrete under explosive testing. Furthermore, the finite element analysis models have been established through LS-DYNA software to simulate the explosive testing using Structure-Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian Method (S-ALE). The model is used to assess the dynamic mechanical behavior of geopolymer materials.

Abstract:The sustainable management for solid wastes of the construction and demolition waste stimulates searching for safety applications for these wastes. The aim of this research is recycling of construction and demolition waste with some different types of polymeric resins to be used in manufacturing process of polymer mortar or polymer concrete, and studying their mechanical and physical properties, and also Specify how the values of compressive strength and the density are affected via the different parameters. In this research two types of construction and demolition waste were used as aggregates replacement (i.e. waste cement/concrete debris, and the waste blocks) while the two types of polymer resins (i.e. Unsaturated polyester and Epoxy) as cement replacements. The used weight percentages of the resins were changed within (1°, 20, 25 and 30) % to manufacture this polymer concrete.

Abstract:Effect of composite polymer on micro-composition and microstructure of concrete was studied by the tests of compressive strength, XRD and SEM. Results showed that the compressive strength of concrete with composite polymer at upper ages was increased a little under the existence of slag powder and silica fume. The hydration speed of concrete under upper ages was increased and the microstructure of concrete got much more uniform with the composite polymer by microstructure analysis such as XRD and SEM.

Abstract:For the concrete used in highway, bridge and other structures, the problems such as the premature failure of the surface material and the failure of the interface between the surface course and the base course have not been solved, and the research at home and abroad mainly focuses on the strength and durability of concrete. It is also considered that polymer modified concrete and fiber reinforced concrete can improve the strength and toughness of concrete. This paper mainly studies the compressive and flexural properties of polymer modified fiber reinforced concrete. The experiment found that the mix design of styrene butadiene lotion modified steel fiber reinforced concrete proposed in this paper was reasonable, and the flexural strength at the age of 3 days reached 6.321Mpa, which was 16.9% higher than that of plain concrete; based on the plastic damage model (CDP) theory of concrete, the constitutive model of polymer modified fiber reinforced concrete is established, and the cubic concrete model is simulated under uniaxial compression, and the influence of concrete mortar with different strength substrates on the stress-strain field of uniaxial compression simulation is further analyzed.

Abstract:Concrete is a building material known for its high compressive strength but susceptibility to cracking. Once concrete cracks, moisture, aggressive ions, and air can easily penetrate its body, deteriorating its mechanical properties and durability. Herein, polyacrylamide (PAM) is incorporated into the concrete via in situ polymerization of acrylamide (AM) to construct a polymer-cement network, aiming to improve flexural strength and crack resistance. Incorporating 7 % AM, the initial cracking fracture toughness is increased by 47.5 %. Concrete with 10 % AM exhibits a 28-day flexural strength of 19.38 MPa, 65.5 % higher than normal concrete. The polymer network formed by in situ polymerization of AM crosslinks with cement hydrates to construct the polymer-cement network, which is responsible for the improvement of flexural strength and crack resistance. Upon completion of the polymerization reaction, the aggregate and the cement matrix are bridged by polymer, concomitant with the densification of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ). In situ polymerization of AM is found to be more efficient and effective than directly adding PAM in improving flexural strength. Moreover, refinement of the pore structure is also observed by in situ polymerization of AM. In conclusion, our study presents a convenient and efficient approach to improving the crack resistance of concrete, thereby spurring the development of high performance concrete.

Abstract:Developing pavement materials by using rubber aggregate is an effective approach to massively utilize waste tires. In this paper, a polymer–rubber aggregate modified porous concrete was prepared as pavement friction course material, its properties e.g. strengths, stress–strain, abrasion resistance, impact resistance and its microstructure were studied. The results indicate that the polymer–rubber aggregate modified porous concrete with the optimum replacing ratio of rubber aggregate to mineral aggregate has higher flexural strength and compressive strength than the ordinary polymer modified porous concrete with mineral aggregate; the energy absorption capacity of polymer modified porous concrete is enhanced by rubber aggregates, so the ductility, abrasion resistance, impact resistance of polymer modified porous concrete are improved remarkably by rubber aggregates; their porosity and the permeability can meet the standard of OGFC (Open-Graded Fraction Course). From the SEM observation, the interfacial transition zone between the rubber and cement paste is enhanced by the polymer, the interleaving of polymer film in the cement hydration products and the replacement of rubber particle increases its ductility and flexibility.
Effect of Waste PET Fiber on the Mechanical Properties and Chloride Ion Penetration of Emergency Repair Concrete for Road Pavement

Abstract:This study evaluated the effects of adding waste PET fibers on the mechanical properties and chloride ion penetration of latex-modified ultra-rapid hardening cement concrete used for emergency road pavement repairs. The primary experimental variable was the content of waste PET fibers. The mechanical properties of the concrete were evaluated through compressive strength, flexural strength, and splitting tensile strength tests. Its durability was evaluated through chloride ion penetration, surface resistivity, and abrasion resistance tests. The experimental results were compared with the quality standards for emergency repair concrete set by the Korea Expressway Corporation. As a result, this study has enhanced the strength and resistance to chloride ions of latex-modified concrete by incorporating waste PET fibers. In the mixture with 3.84 kg/m3 of waste PET fibers, the compressive strength was 29.9 MPa at 4 h and 42.5 MPa at 28 curing days. The flexural strength was 6.0 MPa at 4 curing hours and 7.0 MPa at 28 days, and the splitting tensile strength was 4.5 MPa at 28 days of curing. The chloride ion permeability amount and abrasion depth were 1081C and 0.82 mm, respectively. The mixture with 3.84 kg/m3 of waste PET fibers has superior compressive strength, flexural strength, splitting tensile strength, chloride ion penetration, and surface resistivity compared to the mixture with 7.68 kg/m3. This result means that the waste PET fibers caused poor dispersion and fiber-balling within the concrete, leading to loose internal void structures when incorporated at 3.84 kg/m3. However, the abrasion resistance test showed better results for the mixture with 7.68 kg/m3 of waste PET fibers than the 3.84 kg/m3 mixture. Therefore, the test results indicated that 3.84 kg/m3 of waste PET fibers is the most effective for latex-modified concrete used in emergency road pavement repairs.

Abstract:Three types of polymer modifier used in concrete (styrene-butadiene rubber latex, polyacrylic ester emulsion and organic silicon waterproof agent) were employed to investigate their effects on the compressive strength, capillary water absorption and chloride ion permeability of concrete. Results show that the incorporation of polymer modifier reduces the compressive strength, and fly ash (FA) can improve this adverse effect. All three polymer modifiers can significantly reduce the permeability of concrete, and the effect is more significant at high water-to-binder ratio. Among them, the compressive strength of organic silicon waterproof agent modified concrete is the most similar to that of ordinary concrete, and the sorptivity coefficient is relatively low, even at higher dosages. In addition, with the prolongation of the curing age, the impermeability of polymer-modified concrete mixed with FA reaches the best. The addition of FA can not only achieve economic and environmental benefits, but also cooperate with the polymer in the concrete, thereby improving the waterproofness of the concrete.

Abstract:Given the shortcomings of conventional repair materials for bridge expansion joints, such as ease of damage and lengthy maintenance cycles, this research developed a new type of Fiber-Reinforced Polyurethane Elastic Concrete (FRPEC) that can be used for rapid repair of bridge expansion joints. FRPEC has the advantages of short setting time, high initial strength, excellent bonding performance and satisfactory deformation and toughness. The objective of this research was to explore and experimentally investigate the basic mechanical properties of the new material (FRPEC) such as failure mechanism, compressive strength and flexural strength, workability and toughness. The orthogonal test range analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to optimize FRPEC mixtures based on the compressive and flexural strengths under varying P:CS ratio, cement proportion, and fiber content. Results show that a decrease in the P:CS ratio from 1:1.5 to 1:3 led to an improvement in the mechanical properties of FRPEC, whereas an increase in cement proportion from 40% to 70% adversely affected the mechanical properties. The incorporation of steel fiber improved the strength and toughness of FRPEC.
Preparation and Mechanical-Fatigue Properties of Elastic Polyurethane Concrete Composites

Abstract:In order to solve issues related to bridge girders, expansion devices and road surfaces, as well as other structures that are prone to fatigue failure, a kind of fatigue-resistant elastic polyurethane concrete (EPUC) was obtained by adding waste rubber particles (40 mesh with 10% fine aggregate volume replacement rate) to conventional engineering polyurethane concrete (PUC). Based on the preparation and properties of EPUC, its constitutive relation was proposed through compression and tensile tests; then, a scanning electron microscope (SEM), an atomic force microscope (AFM) and a 3D non-contact surface profilometer were used to study the failure morphology and micromechanisms of EPUC. On this basis, four-point bending fatigue tests of EPUC were carried out at different temperature levels (-20 °C, 0 °C, 20 °C) and different strain levels (400 με~1200 με). These were used to analyze the stiffness modulus, hysteresis angle and dissipated energy of EPUC, and our results outline the fatigue life prediction models of EPUC at different temperatures. The results show that the addition of rubber particles fills the interior of EPUC with tiny elastic structures and effectively optimizes the interface bonding between aggregate and polyurethane. In addition, EPUC has good mechanical properties and excellent fatigue resistance; the fatigue life of EPUC at a room temperature of 600 με can grow by more than two million times, and it also has a longer service life and reduced disease frequency, as well as fewer maintenance requirements. This paper will provide a theoretical and design basis for the fatigue resistance design and engineering application of building materials. Meanwhile, the new EPUC material has broad application potential in terms of roads, bridges and green buildings.
