Abstract:Liquid desiccant air conditioning system presented in this paper realizes independent humidity control, avoids energy loss in the freezing dehumidification process and has a higher efficiency than any other desiccant cooling systems. It can be driven by low-grade heat source (90 degreesC - 60 degreesC) with high energy efficiency, and it seems to be no satisfied methods for other existing technologies to use such low temperature heat source. The equipment can realize optimized heat and mass transfer process. Simulation results show that this system has good performance. This new system can be applied in CHP systems, and it's an effective mode to optimize urban energy supply system.

Abstract:A novel hybrid system of adiabatic absorption two-stage liquid desiccant and CO2 transcritical cycles is proposed,where LiCl solutions are used as desiccants. Dissipated heat of the transcritical cycle is used to regenerate LiCl solutions, and the heat could be utilized efficiently with large temperature decrease. From insight of thermodynamics, model of the hybrid system is built. Based on the calculation results, temperatures of the utilized heat could range from 120℃ to 50℃. In addition, temperature and humidity independence control could be conducted by the hybrid system and its evaporation temperatures could be obviously lifted. From the analysis, the dehumidification rate of the first dehumidifier increases when the moisture contents of ambient air increases. COP of the two-stage liquid desiccant cycle could be lifted when the temperature of LiCl solutions decreases and the concentration of LiCl solutions increases at the inlet of first dehumidifier. Available dissipated heat and evaporation temperature are closely related of the hybrid system. There is a critical evaporation temperature that makes the available dissipated heat to fully meet the need for regeneration of the hybrid system. Comparing with cooling dehumidification by a conventional CO2 transcritical cycle, under the same dehumidification capacity, COP of the transcritical cycle could be improved by 5.6％ and compression work could be decreased by 29％.

Abstract:A new kind of air-conditioning system, the humidity independent control system based on the liquid desiccant air processor has presented in the present study, through the problems analysis on current air-conditioning systems. The operating principle of the liquid desiccant air processor and the configuration of the new system have been described in detail. The advantages and special features have been discussed such as the improvement on IAQ, as well as the benefit on energy saving. It is concluded that the liquid desiccant system can reduce the mold and dust from the air effectively. Humidity and temperature can be controlled individually through different terminals by different means, which will greatly improve IAQ and thermal comfort. Due to the dehumidification has done by the desiccant, chilled water is not necessary for drying the air, only 15 similar to 18 degrees C water is needed to absorb heat during the dehumidification process and the sensible heat.

Abstract:The developments on liquid desiccant air-conditioning systems were illustrated and summarized in this paper. In order to obtain a better dehumidification (or humidification) performance, liquid desiccant should be cooled (or heated) rather than air. Two fundamental modules were proposed, including basic spray module with extra heat exchanger and total heat recovery device, which could be combined to set up various kinds of liquid desiccant air processors. The operating principle of heat pump-driven outdoor air processor as well as heat-driven outdoor air processor was analyzed. The COP air of the heat pump (or power)-driven outdoor air processor could be as high as 5.0 both in summer and in winter operating conditions. The COP air of the hot water-driven processor (65°C–80°C) was 1.19 and 0.93, respectively, using evaporative indoor exhaust air or cooling water to cool the dehumidification process. The liquid desiccant air processor-based temperature and humidity-independent control air-conditioning system could save 20%–30% operating energy compared with the conventional air-conditioning system.

Abstract:Liquid desiccant air conditioning system has beendeeply concerned and gradually applied in engineering projects forits outstanding performance in such aspects as improving indoor airquality, using waste heat, storing energy with high efficiency andcontrolling temperature and humidity independently etc. Taking theheat pump driven liquid desiccant air conditioning system adopted ina Shanghai ecological example building as an example, this paperintroduces the work principle of the system, and sets up a mathemati-cal model simulated the system. Abstract:Desiccant cooling and drying systems have attracted considerable attention in recent years because they can enhance the quality of dried products and reduce the use of conventional source of energy. Calcium chloride (CaCl2) aqueous solution is the cheapest and most readily available liquid desiccant that could be used in desiccant cooling and drying systems, but it has the disadvantage of being instable depending on the inlet air conditions and the concentration of the desiccant in the solution. CaCl2 + LiCl (1:1 mass) and CaCl2 + Ca(NO3)(2) (5:2 mass) mixtures are thought to be the two most potential liquid desiccants with their relatively high performance and high economic efficiency. The main purpose of this research is to obtain the basic thermodynamic properties (isobaric heat capacities) of the aqueous solutions of CaCl2 and its two specially composed mixtures. The measurements were carried out at temperatures range from 308 to 348K and different concentrations determined under consideration of the working conditions of the liquids in systems. Scanning calorimetry was applied and a specialized experimental unit for heat capacity measurements of liquids was used in this research. Based on the results, semiempirical equations as functions of temperature and solute concentration were obtained. The deviation between the equations and experiment values showed good agreements, which confirmed the capability of these equations to be used in engineering applications.

Abstract:A novel hybrid system of liquid desiccant and CO2 transcritical cycles is proposed, where LiCl solutions are used as desiccants. More notablely, dehumidification efficiency of the hybrid system (COPhs') could be increased from 15% to 30% compared with dehumidification efficiency of cooling dehumidification by CO2 transcritical cycle (COPcs). Abstract:Liquid desiccant air conditioning (LDAC) system realizes independent humidity control (IHC) which can be driven by low-grade heat source (90degreesC-60degreesC) with high efficiency. Such IHC system is composed of LDAC as dehumidifying method and chiller as cooling method. The principle and performance of the system are presented in this paper and its comparison with conventional vapor compression refrigeration system is also conducted under similar conditions. The results show that IHC air conditioning system has higher energy efficiency than vapor compression refrigeration system when the ratio of electricity and heat price is more than 2.4. The LDAC system can be applied in CHP systems and it is an effective mode to optimize urban energy supply system.

Abstract:Potential option to replace the traditionally used vapor compression system with desiccant based dehumidification and cooling to overcome the problems in VCR use like as substantial consumption of high grade electrical energy and to eliminate the use of the CFC based refrigerants which are responsible for the depletion of ozone layer. The desiccant cooling can be proved to be an efficient in highly moist atmosphere to handles the latent cooling load of the conditioned space. The present overview explains about the detailed ideas for making use of various chemicals as the desiccant solution for their optimum cost and characteristics. The desiccant cooling can handle both humidity and temperature separately and effectively to produce necessary thermal comfort within the conditioned space. The desiccant cooling can find optimum use of renewable solar energy in air conditioning by applying them for desiccant regeneration to lower the consumption of electricity which produced mostly by fossil fuel based power plants which leads to problem of pollution subsequently. The present review provides the direction for effective use of the desiccant based cooling for separable control over temperature and humidity in case of both residential and industrial use to ameliorate the dual - energy and cost saving.

Abstract:Air-conditioning industry is facing important environmental and regulatory challenges, such as the phaseout of CFCs refrigerants, the requirement of higher ventilation rates and improved air quality by new design standards. The result is the development of technology to supplement or even replace traditional vapor compression cycles. Evaporative cooling systems are environment-friendly and however are usually restrained to climates with low average levels of relative humidity. However, the development of both liquid and solid desiccant systems has significantly widened the range of application of such cycles. Accordingly, the present work aims at describing the fundamentals of desiccant systems, as well as a variety of arrangements for solid desiccant-assisted evaporative cooling cycles and its applications. In addition, the use of solid desiccants to assist vapor compression systems in the handling of the latent component of the thermal load is also discussed.

Abstract:Saving energy consumption of air-conditioning systems is becoming increasingly important in industrial buildings. In this study, measurements were conducted to reveal on-site performance of a full fresh air-conditioning system based on liquid desiccant applied in an industrial factory. Operating the system, temperature and humidity independent control (THIC) can be realized. The results reveal that the THIC system requires higher-temperature chilled water and no reheating process because of the adoption of a liquid desiccant dehumidifier, compared with the conventional vapor compression air-conditioning system. Therefore, a competitive system's coefficient of performance of 3.6 can be realized under the THIC system and an annual electricity-saving ratio of 23.3% can be achieved. In this system, the process air is divided into two parts, and the flow rate ratio of these two parts is discussed to further improve the system's performance. An optimal range of the ratio is determined in this study. When adjusting the ratio from the current 0.72 to 0.5, annual electricity consumption of the THIC system can be further saved by 5.4%. This study would provide valuable experience and reference for energy conservation of industrial air-conditioning systems.

Abstract:In some automatic workshops, pharmaceutical warehouses, etc., there are control requirements for indoor air temperature and humidity, yet almost no occupants or no fresh air demand in the rooms. In this study, a hybrid liquid-desiccant air-conditioning (LDAC) system is proposed for the unoccupied rooms without fresh air demand. In the proposed system, the liquid dehumidifier and regenerator are cascaded, and the regeneration process is creatively moved to indoors. Two systems are selected as the reference systems, i.e., conventional vapor compression system (reference system I) and conventional LDAC system using outdoor air for regeneration (reference system II). The simulation results reveal that, under the typical summer condition in Guangzhou of China, the coefficients of performance (COPsys) of the proposed system, reference system I, and reference system II are 2.6, 1.8, and 2.3, respectively, when the air is dehumidified from 13.0 to 7.7 g/kg. Compared to the reference system I, the reheating process can be avoided, and higher-temperature chilled water at 16 degrees C can be used in the proposed system. Compared to the reference system II, using indoor air for regeneration helps to reduce the regeneration temperature. Thus, the proposed system demonstrates energy and space advantages than the reference systems.

Abstract:Abstract The present paper deals with the experimental study of the liquid desiccant air conditioning system using the single storage solution tank. The novelty of the system is that the dehumidification and regeneration are carried out in a single compact unit. The regeneration of solution is done using the marquise-shaped solar collector. The liquid desiccant solution used here is calcium chloride and water. The moisture removal rate (MRR), moisture, and enthalpy effectiveness are used as the performance parameters. The effects of mass flowrate of solution, solution temperature, inlet air temperature, and relative humidity (RH) on the performance are investigated. The experimental outcome shows that when the solution flowrate is increased from 0.263 to 0.437 kg/s, the MRR is improved from 5.08 to 7.82 g/kg and when the RH is increased from 70% to 92%, the MRR is enhanced from 5.56 to 12.45 g/kg. The new correlation for moisture effectiveness is developed based on the experimental values and depending parameters, and also another correlation is developed based on Chung’s correlation (Chung, T.-W., 1994, “Predictions of Moisture Removal Efficiencies for Packed-Bed Dehumidification Systems,” Gas Sep. Purif., 8(4), pp. 265–268).

Abstract:The hot and humid air containing marine aerosols on tropical islands or coastal areas always leads to serious equipment corrosion and affects the living comfort of residents. Conventionally, an air-conditioning system can only provide cool dry air, and the marine aerosol removal process consumes expendable materials. To simplify the procedure and reduce the energy consumption, a novel hybrid air-conditioning system combined with marine aerosol removal is proposed in this paper. The novel system achieves multiple functions based on the characteristics of liquid-desiccant dehumidification and phase transitions of the ternary solution system, and it can be driven by a low-temperature heat source. Simulation and thermodynamic analysis of the combined system are presented, and the results show that the humidity ratio of the supply air can reach 6.83 g/kg (dry air), with a temperature of 21.14 °C. Compared with the conventional cooling dehumidification system utilizing vapor compression refrigeration driven by power, the power saving ratio (PSR) and the equivalent power generation efficiency (ηeq) of the proposed system can reach 93.11% and 9.8%, respectively. Further, exergy analyses are carried out, and the results show the air handling process of the novel system has a considerable energy saving potential. Besides, a crystallization experiment is conducted to verify the feasibility of the key NaCl separation process. Finally, economic analyses are carried out, which indicate that the novel system achieves competitive economic performance. This study provides a new hybrid air-conditioning technology for simultaneous cooling, dehumidification and marine aerosol removal by using low-temperature heat.

Liquid Desiccant Total Heat Recovery System with Single-Stage Spray Unit for Outdoor Air Handler

Abstract:In air conditioning system, an increased outdoor air flow rate improves the indoor air quality but also increases the energy consumption of the fan. This paper describes a liquid desiccant total heat recovery device combined with a single-stage sprayed module for an outdoor air handling unit. The liquid desiccant total heat recovery device has higher efficiency and avoids cross contamination of the air streams. Average electrical and thermal coefficient of performance (COP) of the air processor are 9.4 and 3.0 in summer with an average thermal COP of 2.2 in winter. With the current energy prices in Beijing, the operating cost of the new outdoor air handler is about 75% of the cost of a conventional outdoor air handler in the summer and 25% of that in the winter.

Abstract:The liquid desiccant air conditioning system is drawing more and more attention due to its advantages in energy saving and environmental friendliness. The dehumidifier is one of the essential parts of the system, which affects the whole system performance severely. This paper experimentally studies the performance of the cross flow dehumidifier, which has been less studied than the counter flow dehumidifier, although it is more applicable in practice. Celdek structured packings were used in the dehumidifier, and a LiBr aqueous solution was used as the liquid desiccant. The moisture removal rate and dehumidifier effectiveness were adopted as the dehumidifier performance indices. The effects of the dehumidifier inlet parameters, including air and desiccant flow rates, air inlet temperature and humidity ratio and desiccant inlet temperature and concentration, on the two indices were investigated. Correlations are proposed to predict the cross flow dehumidifier performance, which give results in good agreement with the present experimental findings.

Abstract:Some industrial buildings demand more accurately control of indoor temperature, humidity ratio as well as indoor air quality, comparing with commercial buildings. The energy consumption performance of new kind of liquid desiccant air-conditioning system (LDCS) applied in industrial building is compared with the conventional air-conditioning system. The systematic coefficient of performance COPs is 5.42 and 2.94 for LDCS and conventional air conditioning system respectively. The LDCS shows better energy-saving potential in the industrial buildings.

Abstract:The desiccant air conditioning system has multiple advantages (e.g., no use of ozone-depleting refrigerants, highly efficient moisture control, easy regenerative integration) over traditional vapor-compression refrigeration systems, thus increasingly attracting more research interest. Recently, several studies have been conducted that primarily aimed to enhance the overall performance of desiccant air conditioners by innovating new desiccant materials, innovating new system configurations and improving system designs and controls, and integrating different hybrid energy sub-systems technologies. Therefore, this paper provides a comprehensive review of the studies mentioned earlier. The present comprehensive review dealt with several axes: first, an overview of the importance of using desiccant air conditioners and their operations, and performance indicators. Second, a summary statement for desiccant materials that includes: the new innovative desiccant materials and the most important composite desiccant materials. Third, detailed information on the newest innovative designs and configurations of desiccant air conditioning systems and their control systems. Fourth, a detailed statement on the most important hybrid energy sub-systems technologies integrated with desiccant air conditioners. Based on the latest developments in desiccant air conditioning systems, this study presents discussions of urgent issues and recommendations for future work that can help focus necessary efforts to find solutions to critical and pending problems, which lead to further improvements in the overall performance of desiccant air conditioners.
