Abstract:Wastewater sampling and pretreatment are necessary steps in the conventional water quality monitoring methods.A new novel monitoring method based on microbial electrochemical principle has been deceloped recently because of its unique convenience. The output voltage or current of the microbial fuel cell (MFC) can be affected by the substrate without any pretreatment or external energy input, therefore MFCs have been used by some researchers to monitor toxic substances in the wastewater.By comparing the results and conclusion from different references,it was found that the toxicants had different responses in MFCs,and opposite results were obtained in different studies related to the same toxic substance. This article briefly introduced the advantages of using MFCs as a monitoring method for water quality changes, and reviewed the changes in current or voltage produced by MFCs before and after the addition of toxic substances in different research systems. The specific response of each toxic substance in MFCs system under different conditions was compared and analyzed,it is believed that when MFCs are used to monitor toxic substances in water, the system structure, operating conditions, and the characteristics of the toxic substances of the MFCs all have a great influence on the response results.Researchers should conduct in-depth systematic research on specific problems, and eventually promote the research process of practical application of water quality monitoring of microbial electrochemistry principle.
