Abstract:Owing to the low conductivity, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tends to accumulate surface charge which is caused by various factors, e.g. friction, space charge carriers, cosmic rays, etc. Additionally, the decay of surface charge takes long time. It is certainly significative to investigate the role of surface charge on influencing the surface breakdown behavior. This work endows PTFE sample films with variable surface-charge density by needle-plate corona-charging electrodes. Negative DC surface breakdown voltage was then measured on all samples at atmospheric pressure and in vacuum. Experimental results show that the surface charge density is tailorable by needle voltages; however, the negative corona accumulates surface charge faster than the positive corona. The positive surface charge benefits to reduce negative DC surface breakdown voltage, while negative surface charge slightly leads to an opposite way, i.e. enhancing the surface breakdown voltage for a certain extent. Additionally, the influence of space charge on the breakdown voltage in vacuum is weaker than that at atmospheric pressure.
