Abstract:In recent years, the micro air vehicle (MAV) technology develops very fast due to the military necessity. In fact, MAV is a complex multi-purposed MEMS, which can fly in the sky, and now it becomes smaller and smaller in size. A brief description of the new developments of MAV technology is given.

Abstract:Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) designed for reconnaissance and difficult to reach missions have excellent potential utility and are of interest for military and civilian applications as flight platforms for optical, acoustic, electronic and chemical sensors for operation in hazardous sites with aerial access. They are autonomous or semiautonomous airborne vehicles, measuring less than 200 meters in any dimension and weighing about 150 grams, accomplishing a useful mission at an affordable cost. Nominal performance goals include real-time imaging, navigation, and communications capabilities, a range of up to 5 kilometers, and a top speed of up to 60 kph, during missions lasting 10 mins to 1 hrs. MAVs may be regarded as six-degree-of-freedom sensor platforms that will enable a broad spectrum of small-unit and special operations. There are two prominent features of MAVs flight: (i) low operating Reynolds number (Re: 10(4)-10(5)), resulting in unfavorable aerodynamic conditions to support controlled flight, and (ii) small physical dimensions, resulting in certain favorable scaling characteristics including structural strength, reduced stall speed, and low inertia. Owing to the low Reynolds number, the aerodynamic performance of all lifting surfaces is degraded. The small scales and speeds also mean that atmospheric turbulence has a severe effect, and small thermal cycle engines that could profit from the high energy densities of fossil fuels are unavailable. It is thus difficult to obtain good flight performance.As the rapid development of microelectronics and Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology, MAVs become a feasible concept. MEMS are extremely small machines in which electronic and mechanical components are combined on a single silicon chip using micromachining techniques. Development of Low Reynolds number aerodynamics design and MEMS-based autopilot system techniques are the near term object. Progresses in sensor, in control and in navigation technologies offer completely new opportunities. This paper deals with MAVs, which are the flying carriers of these advanced sensors. The developments of MAVs around the world, particularly on potential applications, wing model concepts, and onboard avionics, are reviewed at first. The bottleneck and the current situation for the integrated navigation, guidance and control system design in MAVs are then analyzed. The question of whether MEMS can help improve the performance of futuristic MAVs is also pondered.

Abstract:This paper presents the development of two electrically powered micro air vehicle (MAV) prototypes with wingspans of 380 and 360 mm, respectively. A miniature flight control system is constructed using small and light components. A vision system consisting of a micro radio frequency (RF) transmitter and a miniature vision-receiving antenna with a low-noise amplifier is designed, which exhibits advantages over commercial ones. The aerodynamics of several airfoil sections at low chord Reynolds numbers are theoretically analyzed, for the layout of on-board components and the airfoil design. A small-sized propulsion/power testing setup is developed to measure and analyze the static performance of the motor/propeller/battery combination used for MAV prototype. The materials and methods used to build MAV prototypes are also presented. Two MAV prototypes, TH380 and TH360, have been successfully tested in the flight, where TH360 MAV with a payload of a home-made micro vision system can acquire the images of objects and transmit them back to the ground station.

Abstract:This paper presents the development of an electrically powered micro air vehicle (MAV) with a wingspan of 360 mm. A miniature flight control system including a self-made micro video image system especially suitable for MAV is developed. The aerodynamic performance of several airfoil sections at low chords Reynolds number is analyzed in order to find an optimum airfoil section for the MAV prototype. A small-sized propulsion testing setup is built to measure the performance of the motor-gear-propeller-battery combination so that an efficient propulsion system can be obtained. The TH360 MAV with a payload of a self-made micro color video image system has been successfully tested in the real-time flight, where the real-time images of the ground target can be transmitted from the onboard video camera to the ground.

Abstract:This paper presents an electrically powered micro air vehicle (MAV) with a flexible wing integrated with on-board electronic components that is built at Tsinghua University. The low aspect ratio wing, adopting the airfoil of S5010 and Zimmerman shape, is made up of a flexible printed circuit membrane (FPCM) that covers a thin carbon fiber skeleton. The real MAV prototype is tested in a low-speed wind tunnel in order to evaluate its aerodynamic characteristics. The comparing experiments are conducted on the flexible wing and its rigid counterpart with the same size and the same wing shape to illustrate the aerodynamic advantages of the flexible wing. The results of the wind tunnel experiments indicate that the flexible wing has a larger angle of stall, bigger maximum lift coefficient than the rigid one. However, the lift-drag ratio of the flexible wing varies in a complex way because the flexible wing also increases the drag with the lift growth. The FPCM functions as both the skin of the aircraft wing and the supporting substrate for the electronic components, such as micro hot-film flow speed sensors that are used to determine 3 fundamental flight parameters: air speed, angle of attack and sideslip angle. In addition, most of the signal processing circuits is distributed on the FPCM, which remarkably reduces the autopilot load. The dimensions of a homemade autopilot that is separately installed in the fuselage are 35times20times12 mm with the weight of 6 g. Through experiments of real flights, the turning, climbing, maneuverability and wind resistant ability of the MAV are tested. The flight results show that the MAV can fly with good stability and maneuverability.

Abstract:The current status of research and development of Micro Air Vehicles (MAV) is reviewed in the present paper. The main technical difficulties in the practical application of MAV are analyzed with emphasis on low Reynolds number aerodynamics, aerodynamic configuration with high lift to drag ratio and intelligent flight control. Based on previous experience and theory it can be said that it is almost impossible to design MAV with good flying performance using conventional design method when MAV's main scale is less than 15 cm. Biomimatics must be considered for the design. The major issues related to biomimatic design of MAV, such as high lift mechanism, intelligent high maneuverability, resistance to disturbance and energetics, are discussed in the present paper.

Abstract:This paper presents a microphotography and wireless transmission system for use in micro aerial vehicles (MAVs). The surveillance devices in MAVs must be carefully designed because of their quite limited payload capability. The developed system is small and lightweight but with high performance. This paper describes the system components in the microphotography unit, the radio frequency unit and the reception station. The parts in the MAVs weigh 16 g (including the camera and the antenna) with a size of 30 mm×40 mm×5 mm. The system can transmit and receive real-time video and has a practicable distance of 1 km (line of sight). The system provides a reliable, light microphotography, and wireless transmission system for MAVs with 320 mm wingspan.

Abstract:The aerodynamic modeling of the orthoptera insect with wing length about fifteen centimeters and weight about twenty to sixty gram under low Reynolds number was studied, the system structure of flapping-wing Micro Aerial Vehicle was detailedly analyzed and discussed, the mathematics modeling of flapping-wing MAV was established through simulation software, and simulation studying was performed, so it offers the academic warrant for the study of flapping-wing Micro Aerial Vehicle.

Abstract:A miniature wirelessdata communication system was developed for use in a micro air vehicle (MAV). This paper focuses on the attitude detector system which is small, light and accurate. The digital communication can provide better security, higher transmission rate and better quantity. Compared with traditional communication systems, this miniature wireless data communication system has better disturbance resistance and lower error probability (10-6) for distances up to 1 500 m. The communication system integrated with a miniature microelectromechanical system (MEMS) azimuthlevel detector was tested on a 3axis simulator which can simulate the real movement of an MAV. The results show that the miniature wirelessdata communication system reliably measures and transmits the attitude which can be used to control the MAV.

Abstract:This paper presents development of an electrically powered Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) prototype based on aerodynamic analysis in wind tunnel and water tunnel tests. Two airframe models in triangle and square wing planforms, each with a wingspan of 100mm, are analyzed with a small-scale low speed wind tunnel to examine the practical characteristics at the low Reynolds number. The test in a water tunnel is further carried out to investigate the relationship between the vortex aerofoil design and turbulences created. The testing results show that the triangle wing aerofoil appears greater maximum lift coefficient and little occurrence of vortex and turbulences. Based on the verified wing planform in the tunnel tests, a MAV prototype was further designed and fabricated, with successful tests in the real flight.

Abstract:Micro Air Vehicles (MAV) are of great interest of military and civilian applications. In this paper, one newly-designed prototype Micro Air Vehicle TF380 with the span of 380 millimeters, the speed of 20-30 mph, and the weight of 5 ounces and radio remote control at Tsinghua University is introduced. Comparisons and analyses of the aerodynamics for MAV TF380 associated with several airfoils at Low Reynolds number (<1/2 millions) are investigated in details, Based on the computational performances, an airfoil-optimized MAV TF380 is obtained. The maiden flight-testing of MAV TF380 is successful.

The paper discusses recent Asian research in the development of FMAV and summarizes two major strands of research divided by insect-like FMAVs and bird-like FMAVs. Abstract:In this article, we present a comprehensive design and implementation for a micro aerial vehicle (MAV) that is able to perform 3-D autonomous navigation and obstacle avoidance in cluttered and realistic unknown environments without the aid of global positioning system and other external sensors or markers. To achieve these autonomous missions, modularized components are developed for the MAV, including visual–inertial odometry, 3-D occupancy mapping, and motion planning. The proposed system is implemented to run on a small embedded computer in real time. It is demonstrated to be robust in both simulation and real flight experiments. Aerodynamics of an Adaptive Wing for MAVs

Abstract:An adaptive airfoil wing was developed to improve the maneuverability and stability of micro air vehicles(MAVs) flying at low Reynolds numbers.The wing can be adaptively deformed by a set of compact high-efficiency crank-slider devices so that the wing provides the optimum aerodynamic efficiency at different angles of attack.Simulations and wind tunnel tests show that the adaptive wing greatly improves the MAV maneuverability and stall characteristics with better performance than conventional fixed wings.
Developing Smart MAVs for Autonomous Inspection in GPS-denied Constructions

Abstract:Smart Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) have transformed infrastructure inspection by enabling efficient, high-resolution monitoring at various stages of construction, including hard-to-reach areas. Traditional manual operation of drones in GPS-denied environments, such as industrial facilities and infrastructure, is labour-intensive, tedious and prone to error. This study presents an innovative framework for smart MAV inspections in such complex and GPS-denied indoor environments. The framework features a hierarchical perception and planning system that identifies regions of interest and optimises task paths. It also presents an advanced MAV system with enhanced localisation and motion planning capabilities, integrated with Neural Reconstruction technology for comprehensive 3D reconstruction of building structures. The effectiveness of the framework was empirically validated in a 4,000 square meters indoor infrastructure facility with an interior length of 80 metres, a width of 50 metres and a height of 7 metres. The main structure consists of columns and walls. Experimental results show that our MAV system performs exceptionally well in autonomous inspection tasks, achieving a 100\% success rate in generating and executing scan paths. Extensive experiments validate the manoeuvrability of our developed MAV, achieving a 100\% success rate in motion planning with a tracking error of less than 0.1 metres. In addition, the enhanced reconstruction method using 3D Gaussian Splatting technology enables the generation of high-fidelity rendering models from the acquired data. Overall, our novel method represents a significant advancement in the use of robotics for infrastructure inspection.

Autonomous Hovering Control and Test for Micro Air Vehicle

Abstract:This paper presents an investigation of autonomous hovering flight control of micro air vehicles (MAVs). The control system consists of an onboard section with a self-made micro azimuth gradienter sensor and a ground station. An open-loop control strategy named teaching-by showing based control is proposed by stimulating a skilled human operator's manipulation of the aircraft, with the objective of learning operator's manipulation and then generating a set of command data to control MAV's hovering. A feedforward plus a PD feedback control is further employed to control the aircraft using the command data generated in the open-loop control. The PD control gains are tuned automatically according to the attitude of the vehicle by fuzzy logic theory. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is validated in autonomous hovering flight experiments conducted on a one-meter sized aircraft.

Abstract:A three-wing Flapping Wing Rotor Micro Aerial Vehicle (FWR-MAV) which can perform controlled flight is introduced and an experimental study on this vehicle is presented. A mechanically driven flapping rotary mechanism is designed to drive the three flapping wings and generate lift, and control mechanisms are designed to control the pose of the FWR-MAV. A flight control board for attitude control with robust onboard attitude estimation and a control algorithm is also developed to perform stable hovering flight and forward flight. A series of flight tests was conducted, with hovering flight and forward flight tests performed to optimize the control parameters and assess the performance of the FWR-MAV. The hovering flight test shows the ability of the FWR-MAV to counteract the moment generated by rotary motion and maintain the attitude of the FWR-MAV in space; the experiment of forward flight shows that the FWR-MAV can track the desired attitude.

An Attitude Estimation Method for MAV Based on the Detection of Vanishing Point

Abstract:For Micro Aerial vehicles (MAV) flying low in the city, an attitude estimation method based on machine vision is presented. First, the method detects the straight edge lines using Hough transform from the downward looking images captured. Then, a voting scheme that uses pixels as accumulators is applied to simultaneously evaluate the vertical edge lines of buildings and the vanishing point at which they converge. Finally, the attitude of UAV is calculated according to single view geometry. The experiment results indicate that the method detects the vanishing point reliably, and estimate the attitude precisely.

Abstract:This research aims at developing a flapping wing micro air vehicle model. The development of micro air vehicle model is a complex project involved with micro power transmission system design, low Reynolds number aerodynamics analysis, wind tunnel experiment, flight control algorithms and energy supply etc. This research focus on the field of flapping mechanism design and optimization, the aerodynamic layout of wing and tail design was also involved. The finally designed model was fabricated using traditional machining process with a total 14.88 g including the electronic module. Initial experiments showed that the spatial flapping mechanism based FMAV model provided a symmetric and steady flapping motion.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the development of our latest flapping-wing micro air vehicle (FW-MAV), named Explobird, which features two wings with a wingspan of 195 mm and weighs a mere 25.2 g, enabling it to accomplish vertical take-off and hover flight. We devised a novel gear-based mechanism for the flapping system to achieve high lift capability and reliability and conducted extensive testing and analysis on the wings to optimise power matching and lift performance. The Explobird can deliver a peak lift-to-weight ratio of 1.472 and an endurance time of 259 s during hover flight powered by a single-cell LiPo battery. Considering the inherent instability of the prototype, we discuss the derivatives of its longitudinal system, underscoring the importance of feedback control, position of the centre of gravity, and increased damping. To demonstrate the effect of damping enhancement on stability, we also designed a passive stable FW-MAV. Currently, the vehicle is actively stabilised in roll by adjusting the wing root bars and in pitch through high-authority tail control, whereas yaw is passively stabilised. Through a series of flight tests, we successfully demonstrate that our prototype can perform vertical take-off and hover flight under wireless conditions. These promising results position the Explobird as a robust vehicle with high lift capability, paving the way towards the use of FW-MAVs for carrying load equipment in multiple tasks.
