Abstract:Objective To appraise the characteristics of the aged patients with coronary disease undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in clinical presentations, operative morbidity and hospital mortality. Methods Data were collected as a part of a prospective registry of all CABGs performed between September 2001 and January 2003. Comparison between the 2 age groups: ≥70 years(n=106) and 70 years(n=231) were performed using chi-square tests. Results The aged patients were more likely to have diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and renal dysfunction. There were no significant differences between the two groups in the operative morbidity and hospital mortality. Logistic regression analysis showed that low left ventricular ejection fraction, re-exploration were related to the operative mortality. Conclusion The operative mortality and morbidity are equivalent in those ≥70 and 70 years of age. Age is not the main factor determining the operative outcome.
