Abstract:China produced a number of stalk wastes and their total yield reached 0.7 billion tons per year.Anaerobic digestion provided a viable alternative for the disposal of those stalk wastes. When considering their high carbon content, stalk waste may also be used as potential co-substrates of anaerobic digestion of swine manure.Although co-digestion of manure wastes with many crop residues was frequently studied, the optimal mixing ratios of co-substrates obtained in different studies were different. And the mechanism on the improvement of process performance by using co-digestion was not well understood. In the present, effect of carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio on co-digestion of swine manure (SM) with stalk wastes was studied.Higher daily biogas production and biogas yield was recorded from digestion of corn stalk than those in the cotton stalk with higher lignin content. In co-digestion of SM with stalk wastes,a longer lag phase were observed at a C/N of 15,while the performance in terms of biogas production rate and yield was enhanced at C/N of 20~25.At a higher C/N of 30,daily biogas production peaked earlier, but lower biogas yield was obtained.During co-digestion of SM with corn and cotton stalk,a C/N ratio of 25 was found to be the best and the highest biogas yields reached 397 and 289 mL/g TS,which were 128% and 180% of those in the control, respectively. The present study provides a promising avenue for co-digestion of manure with stalks wastes by adjusting the mixing ratio of wastes to reach an ideal C/N ratio.
