Abstract:Microwave assisted with alkaline (MW-A) condition was applied in the pretreatment of swine manure, and the effect of the pretreatment on anaerobic treatment and biogas production was evaluated in this study. The two main microwaving (MW) parameters, microwaving power and reaction time, were optimized for the pretreatment. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to investigate the effect of alkaline microwaving process for manure pretreatment at various values of pH and energy input. Results showed that the manure disintegration degree was maximized of 63.91% at energy input of 54 J/g and pH of 12.0, and variance analysis indicated that pH value played a more important role in the pretreatment than in energy input. Anaerobic digestion results demonstrated that MW-A pretreatment not only significantly increased cumulative biogas production, but also shortened the duration for a stable biogas production rate. Therefore, the alkaline microwaving pretreatment could become an alternative process for effective treatment of swine manure.

Abstract:The combined fermentation of sludge from the secondary sedimentation tank of municipal wastewater treatment plants and food waste enables not only waste reduction, but also the acquisition of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) for the biosynthesis of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). To better understand variables influencing the production of VFAs and PHAs, this study considered anaerobic fermentation of VFAs under different pH conditions. The production of VFA was the highest at an initial pH of 9.0, reaching 25,934 ± 1,485 mg COD/L and a VFAs/S COD ratio of 0.61 ± 0.04. When the fermentation liquid was used as a carbon source for PHA biosynthesis, continuous pulsed feeding resulted in the highest PHA synthesis rate of 64.5 ± 1.8%, while the culture receiving a one-time feeding had the lowest rate of only 51.5 ± 2.0%.

Abstract:Laboratory-scale reactors, in which the pH could be auto-adjusted, were employed to investigate the mesophilic methane fermentation with pig manure (7.8% total solids) at pH 6.0, 7.0, and 8.0. Results showed that the performance of anaerobic digestion was strongly dependent on pH value. Biogas production and methane content at neutral pH 7.0 were significantly higher (16,607mL, 51.81%) than those at pH 6.0 (6916mL, 42.9%) and 8.0 (9739mL, 35.6%). Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis fingerprinting and Shannon's index indicated that the samples contained highly diverse microbial communities. The major genus at pH 7.0 was Methanocorpusculum, compared with that was Methanosarcina at both pH 6.0 and 8.0. Our research revealed that cultures maintained at pH 7.0 could support increased biogas production, which has significant implications for the scale-up biogas engineering.

Abstract:Long-term semi-continuous experiments were carried out under three feedstock conditions to study the effects of mixing ratio and total solids (TS) content on temperature-phased anaerobic codigestion of rice straw (RS) and pig manure (PM). The results showed that biohythane only produced from the mixture with 6% TS content and its average content were 12.83 ± 1.19% (hydrogen) and 23.68 ± 1.12% (methane). Increasing mixture TS content and decreasing its RS ratio increased biohythane production and organic matter removal by creating a suitable process pH and increasing the anaerobic reaction rates. The highest biohythane production of the mixture reached 73.09 ± 3.03 ml/g VS (hydrogen) and 235.81 ± 9.30 ml/g VS (methane) at a mixing ratio of 5:1 and TS content of 6%. A variety of hydrogen-producing bacteria were found in the thermophilic reactor and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1 played an important role. Butyric acid fermentation is the main hydrogen-producing pathway. Methanobacterium and Methanosaeta were dominant archaea in the mesophilic reactor.

Abstract:Due to the large quantity and wide range of solid wastes of the biomass, and the dual characteristics of pollution and resource utilization, the energy utilization of anaerobic fermentation can promote its pollution control, so the mixed fermentation technology of solid wastes of agricultural biomass was studied. Corn straw, pig manure, and kitchen waste were selected as solid wastes of agricultural biomass. A system including a temperature control device, a fermentation device and a gas gathering device is used to measure the content and pH value of biogas and methane. Physical, chemical, and biological pretreatment methods were used to strengthen the anaerobic reference of biomass, and the mixed fermentation of different biomass was used to complete the anaerobic fermentation of a variety of solid wastes of agricultural biomass. The results showed that pig manure and corn straw were suitable for medium temperature fermentation at 30°C, while cow manure and corn straw were suitable for high temperature fermentation at 60°C. In the process of anaerobic fertilization, when the ratio of cow dung to sludge is 2:1, 3:1, and 4:1 respectively, the methane content is shown as follows: (1) The first 130 days are relatively stable and then slowly decreased; (2) The first 120 days are slowly increased, and then it rises to the maximum value at 140 days and then remains unchanged; (3) It remains at 2% all the time. After the mixture of cow manure and sludge, the higher the proportion of cow manure is, the higher the pH value in the initial stage of anaerobic fertilization is. The higher the basicity of methanogens in the fermentation liquid inside the fermentation tank is, the higher the pH value of the system is, and the basicity of methanogens has a significant positive correlation with the crude protein content of biomass.

Abstract:Effects of initial pH (3-12) on mesophilic hydrolysis and acidification reactions of swine manure was studied. The initial pH changed the microbial community in the suspension so as to affect hydrolysis and acidification reactions on swine manure. At pH 10-12 the Clostridium alkalicellum and/or Corynebacterium humireducens were enriched and the soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD), total volatile fatty acids (VFAs), proteins and carbohydrates from manure were increased in quantities. In particular, at pH 10 the VFA concentration peaked at 13,600 mg-COD/L, with acetate and propionate accounting for 71.8% of the total VFAs. Acidic environment facilitates release of ammonium from manure. The Butyricimonas sp. was found existing at initial pH 5 which led to accumulated quantities of butyrate. Initial pH adjustment was revealed to be an effective way to manipulate rates and end products of hydrolysis and acidification of swine manure. (C) 2013 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:A comparative analysis study of pH and temperature effects on the anaerobic digestion process of different agricultural wastes was carried out during the production of biogas. The investigation was in two phases. Phase one involved the use of a single substrate of cow dung, cassava peels, yam peels and pineapple peels while the second involved co-digestion of the substrates with cow dung. The composition of gas produced by a single substrate and a mixture of these substrates were determined. The feedstock for each experiment was a 1:1 mixture of the substrates with water. For the co-digestion, one part of the substrate and one part of cow dung were used with two parts of water, making the ratio 1:1:2. Routine measurements of pH and temperature of the feedstock were taken and the composition of the produced biogas was determined. It was deduced that cow dung co-digested with cassava peels gave a higher yield with methane content of 65.3% followed by cow dung only, co-digestion of cow dung and yam peels, cassava peels only, yam peels only and pineapple peels with 63.4%, 51.4%, 46.2%, 42.3% and 0.0%, respectively. Therefore co-digestion, with cow dung and cassava peels is most efficient for biogas production.
Implications of urine-to-feces ratio in the thermophilic anaerobic digestion of swine waste.

Abstract:Thermophilic anaerobic digestion of swine manure represents a potential waste treatment technology to address environmental concerns, such as odor emissions and removal of pathogenic microorganisms. However, there are concerns relative to the stability of this process when swine manure is the sole substrate. In this study, the potential of biogas production from swine manure as the sole substrate under thermophilic (50 degrees C) conditions was investigated in the laboratory, to determine whether separation of urine and feces as part of the waste collection process would benefit anaerobic digestion. Effluent from a continuously stirred tank reactor was used as the inoculum for batch tests, in which the substrate contained three different concentrations of urine (urine-free, as-excreted urine-to-feces ratio and double the as-excreted urine-to-feces ratio). Inocula were acclimated to these same urine-to-feces ratios to determine methane production. Results show that both urine-free and as-excreted substrates were not inhibitory to anaerobic inocula. Anaerobic microorganisms can be readily acclimated to substrate with double the as-excreted urine concentration, which contained nitrogen concentrations up to 7.20 g/L. Cumulative methane production reached similar levels in the batch tests, regardless of the substrate urine concentration.
Anaerobic Co-digestion of Rice Straw and Swine Feces

Abstract:Under mesophilic condition (35 ℃), a bench-scale experiment based on anaerobic co-digestion process of rice straw and swine feces was conducted in a fed-batch single phase reactor. Changes of daily biogas production, cumulative biogas production, methane content, pH, VFAs, NO3-N and NH3-N during digestion process were studied. The results indicated that the anaerobic digestion of rice straw could successfully progress when swine feces was added, 330.14 L of biogas production per kg VS added was obtained and the average methane content was up to 62.88%. The cumulative biogas production, removal of VFAs and TOC were not significant, but it is buffering to acid accu- mulation during anaerobic digestion process. The results of the accumulation efficiency of NO3-N showed that swine feces improved the accu- mulation of NO3-N, increasing by 34.53% compared to rice straw alone, it was efficient to increase the fertilizer value of anaerobically digested effluent.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to optimize the process parameters for the anaerobic co-digestion of cabbage waste and cattle manure, with the objective of maximizing methane production. Batch experiments were conducted using five different mixing ratios (1:0, 3:1, 1:1, 1:3, and 0:1), and continuous experiments were run at six different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 25, 20, 15, 10, 8, and 5 days. The results indicate that the co-digestion displayed a synergistic effect, as evidenced by a cooperative index greater than 1. Additionally, an appropriate cabbage waste to cattle manure ratio of 3:1 yielded a maximum methane production of 440 mL/g-VS. During the continuous study, the highest methane production rate of 1.55 L/(L·d) was achieved at 10-day HRT. Efficient methane yields in the range of 322–336 mL/g-VS were obtained at HRTs of 25, 20, and 15 days. Methane yield decreased when HRTs were shortened to 10 or 8 days due to the accumulation of volatile fatty acids and the loss of methanogens. At an HRT of 4 days, methane production nearly ceased. These results provide insights for the optimization of anaerobic co-digestion of cabbage waste and cattle manure, leading to higher methane production.

Abstract:Anaerobic digestion and codigestion are processes that may aggregate economic value to the organic waste, not only through the production of biogas, as the main product, but also with a by-product, the digestate. The production of biogas (renewable and sustainable energy source) reduces GEE emissions, as well as the impact caused by waste disposal from the agribusiness sector. The present work aims at the potential optimization biogas production in rice residues (rice straw) in different proportions along with bovine residues (waste), under the effect of temperature increase (from 36 to 60 °C). Preliminary investigation consisted of sampling and drying the residues with analytical tests (TS, VS, COD, TOC, N, P, pH, moisture), which allowed the determination of the proportions to be used in experimental research. Then, anaerobic bench reactors (A, B, C, Control) in different proportions were monitored by means of BMP tests, in order to evaluate the potential of methane production in a period of 60 days. During this period, different temperatures were tested, varying from 36 to 60 °C, gradually increased by 2 to 2 °C, every three or 5 days, in order to adapt the anaerobic microorganisms, present in the waste mass. The three reactors presented different biogas production, which can be explained by the different temperatures proposed. Reactors A (ratio 1:1) and C (ratio 1:10) did not reach the proposed objective as their production level was below the production of the control reactor. The B reactor (3:1 ratio) was the one that presented the highest accumulated biogas production during the test period, with 76.95 NmL and the rice straw contribution of 7.55 NmL. As regarding to temperature, all reactors showed to adapt to the two conditions tested: mesophilic and thermophilic fact that demonstrates synergism among the residues tested. Despite the verified adaptability, the mesophilic condition was defined as the most favorable for biogas production because of its greater stability and lower energy cost. The BMP test has proven them to be a viable, easy-to-use, and inexpensive operational tool to monitor and determine biogas production potential for the waste used.

Abstract:To determine the optimal co-digestion conditions for four mixed vegetable crop residues (including cucumber, tomato, eggplant, and pepper, mixed in equal parts by mass) with pig manure, we conducted a study using response surface methodology (RSM). The interaction effects of parameters, such as manure-to-mixed vegetable residue ratios (M/S), initial pH, and organic load (OL) with respect to cumulative methane yield, were investigated. The results showed that the influence of each factor on the CMY is in the following order: initial pH > M/S > OL. The highest cumulative methane yield was calculated to be 380.50 mL/g VS at an initial pH of 7.3, OL of 18.8 g VS/L, and M/S of 3.9:1. Comparison and verification experiments showed that under optimized conditions, the co-digestion process showed increased methane yield and had practical application value. The microbial analysis showed that the relative abundances of bacterial taxa, such as Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, Fastidiosipila , and Terrisporobacter , were all highest in the co-digestion samples under optimized process conditions (PV). Different types of methanogenic archaea taxa in PV samples were richer than in other samples, which showed higher relative abundances of Methanogenium , Methanobrevibacter , Methanoplanus , Methanospirillum , and Methanobrevibacter . Thus, the co-digestion system of a mixture of vegetable residues and pig manure can enrich different types of methanogenic archaea taxa, which leads to increased digestion performance and may strengthen process stability. Importantly, pig manure and mixed vegetable residues can be included in anaerobic digestion applications through co-digestion, thus enabling the valorization of these substantial residues and engineering for applications.

Effects of Pyrogenic Carbonaceous Materials on Anaerobic Digestion of a Nitrogen-Rich Organic Waste—Swine Manure

Abstract:Anaerobic digestion of nitrogen-rich organic wastes as the sole feedstock does not only have low efficiency in methane production due to its inherent carbon deficiency (low carbon/nitrogen ratio) but also requires an acclimation period during the startup phase. This study investigated the effects of pyrogenic carbonaceous materials (PCMs), namely, activated carbon and biochar, on dynamic changes in anaerobic microbial diversity and corresponding digestion performance in anaerobic digestion of swine manure during the startup phase of the reactors. The results showed that both activated carbon and biochar changed the microbial communities and enhanced the microbial communities of Archaea, unclassified Bacteroidetes, Bacteroidetes, and YC-E6. Correspondingly, such changes stabilized the digestion of swine manure faster and significantly enhanced digestion performance. The digestion with activated carbon demonstrated better performance than the digestion with biochar due to the larger surface area of activated carbon. Maximum biogas productions were observed in the AD reactors containing 0.25% activated carbon (1134 mL/g VS loaded) and 1% biochar (655 mL/g VS loaded) under the conditions of 20-day HRT. The methane content of the biogas formed was 71% (v/v) in all AD reactors. The results showed that activated carbon and biochar have significant impacts on microbial communities, which help alleviate inhibition from H2S and ammonia and improve biogas production. Abstract:This study aimed to investigate potential methane production through anaerobic co-digestion of rice straw and digested swine manure with different total solids. The research was carried out in bench scale with utilizing batch system. To evaluate the stability of anaerobic co-digestion process, the experiment was run in triplicate. The anaerobic co-digestion process was operated in 500 mL batch digesters under constant agitation speed and temperature. The agitation speed was maintained at 270 r/min. Temperature of the batch system was set and maintained at 35 degrees C. Digested swine manure utilized in this experiment was obtained from semi-continuous digesters run at steady state condition, with 25 days of hydraulic retention time under mesophilic condition. Rice straw (RS) generated the highest methane production at 3% total solids (TS) which was around (1814 +/- 47.43) mL, where in this concentration, it had C:N ratio at 10.6:1. Rice straw obtained the highest methane yield at 3% TS, which was around (141.4 +/- 3.70) mL CH4/g volatile solids (VS) added. Rice straw also had the highest chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and VS reduction at 3% TS which were around (52.97%+/- 1.46%) and (61.81%+/- 1.04%), respectively.

Abstract:Swine manure contains large amount of organic resource, turning to be a favorable substrate for volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production. Alkaline treatment has demonstrated an effective way to enhance VFAs production. To optimize the alkaline treatment pattern, swine manure fermentation under initial pH 10.0 and continued pH 10.0 conditions was carried out in batch experiments, to evaluate their efficiency on hydrolysis and acidogenesis. The results showed that compared with continued pH 10.0 adjustment, initial pH 10.0 pretreatment achieved similar VFAs production at 11939 mg-COD/l within shorter period. Kinetic analysis demonstrated the rate-limiting step for fermentation under alkaline adjustment was acidogenesis not hydrolysis. High throughput sequencing was applied to investigate microbial community, showing that new non-spore-forming Lachnospiraceae and Porphyromonadaceae enriched during initial pH 10.0 fermentation, while spore-forming Bacillaceae and Sporolactobacillaceae dominated at constant pH 10.0 condition. With lower chemical dosage and higher acidogenesis rate, initial pH 10.0 pretreatment is more favorable than continued pH 10.0 adjustment for swine manure fermentation. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Impact of Thermal Treatment on Biogas Production by Anaerobic Digestion of High-solid-content Swine Manure

Abstract:Livestock manure is a kind of waste with high organic content and sanitation risk. In order to investigate the impact of thermal treatment on the anaerobic digestion of high-solid-content swine manure, 70 degrees C thermal treatment was conducted to treat raw manure (solid content 27.6%) without any dilution. The results indicated that thermal treatment could reduce the organic matters and improve the performance of anaerobic digestion. When the thermal treatment time was 1d, 2d, 3d, 4d, the VS removal rates were 15.1%, 15.5%, 17.8% and 20.0%, respectively. The methane production rates (CH4/VSadd) were 284.4, 296.3, 309.2 and 264.4 mL x g(-1), which was enhanced by 49.7%, 55.9%, 62.7% and 39.2%, respectively. The highest methane production rate occurred when the thermal treatment time was 3d. The thermal treatment had an efficient impact on promoting the performance of methane production rate with a suitable energy consumption. On the other hand, thermal treatment could act as pasteurization. This showed that thermal treatment would be of great practical importance.

Abstract:Rice straw and swine wastewater are abundant, easy to obtain, and inexpensive biomass materials. Anaerobic digestion of rice straw and swine wastewater effectively regulates the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio and also improves methane production efficiency. The dense lignocellulosic structure, unsuitable carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, and light texture of rice straw hinder its application in anaerobic digestion. Effective pretreatment technologies can improve degradation efficiency and methane production. Our study is the first to apply domesticated paddy soil microbes to enhance the efficiency of hydrolytic acidification of rice straw and swine wastewater at varying temperatures and times. The results show that the highest total organic carbon (1757.2 mg/L), soluble chemical oxygen demand (5341.7 mg/L), and organic acid concentration (4134.6 mg/L) appeared in the hydrolysate after five days of hydrolytic acidification at 37 °C. Moreover, the use of hydrolysate produced 13% more gas and reduced the anaerobic digestion period by ten days compared to the untreated control. This suggests that using domesticated paddy soil microbes as a pretreatment might be a sustainable and cost-effective strategy for improving the degradation efficacy and methane production from lignocellulosic materials.

Abstract:This study characterized dynamic behaviors of batch anaerobic digesters treating food waste in terms of methane production, organics destruction and process stability under different organic loads (OLs), substrate to inoculum (S/I) ratios [on volatile solid (VS) basis] and initial pH. The results showed that OL, S/I ratio and initial pH significantly affected batch anaerobic process. Methane yield was proved to be inversely proportional to OL and S/I ratio. Digester with lowest OL (5 g VS/L) obtained greatest methane yield (551.4 mL/g VS), highest organics removal (94.1%) and good stability. Enhancing OL to 10 g VS/L was recommended for satisfactory stability and higher volumetric methane productivity. When OL was designated as 10 g VS/L, digester with low S/I ratio (1/2) achieved satisfactory methane yield (539.3 mL/g VS), high organics removal (923%) and stable performance. When OL was relatively high (20 g VS/L), adjusting initial pH to 7.5 contributed to stable performance via enhancing buffering capacity against volatile fatty acids (WA) disturbance. Strong VFA inhibition occurred under high OL (40 g VS/L) or great S/I ratio (2/1) or acidic initial pH (6.5). In this case, acetate was dominant VFA, followed by butyrate. However, when digester was stable, acetate was main VFA, followed by propionate. This study provided practical guidance on process configurations for batch digesters of food waste needed to achieve satisfactory performance and stability. Abstract:Anaerobic digestion could treat organic wastes and recovery energy. Dry anaerobic digestion had advantages of low heating energy, small digester and less digestate, but its methane production was poor. In this study, an enhanced dry anaerobic digestion of swine manure (thermal treatment + dry anaerobic digestion) was proposed, and its feasibility was investigated via semi-continuous experiment. Results showed that methane production rates were 314.6, 416.0, 298.0 and 69.9 mL CH4/g VS at solid retention time (SRT) of 41 d, 35 d, 29 d and 23 d. Volatile solids (VS) removal rate and methane production rate could reached 71.4% and 416.0 mL CH4/g VS respectively at SRT of 35 d. Methane production rate of the enhanced dry anaerobic digestion was 390% higher than that of dry anaerobic digestion. Microbial study indicated that hydrogenotrophic methanogens predominated with the abundance of 90.2%, while acetoclastic methanogens were not detected. This process was feasible, and was of great practical importance.

Abstract:Links between carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio, synergy and microbial characteristics of anaerobic co-digestion of food waste (FW), cattle manure (CS) and corn straw (CS) were investigated. Digesters with 100% CS, 25% FW + 75% CS, 25% CM + 75% CS suffered acid inhibition, in close association with unbalanced C/N and the resulting recessions of Syntrophomonadaceae and Methanosaeta. Co-digestion overcame C/N imbalance and achieved multiple synergies. Process performance had a positive correlation with Syntrophomonadaceae. Digester with 75% FW + 25% CS had most Syntrophomonadaceae (26.7%) and methane yield (467.3-507.6 mL/g VS) among co digestion trials. Synergy was greater under higher load and exhibited a good correlation with C/N ratio. Co digestion of FW, CM and CS (2:2:1) with suitable C/N ratio (20.79) obtained the greatest synergistic rate (14.6%). Unstable systems were improved by adjusting C/N ratio to 30 via urea, which stimulated Methanosarcina growth therefore enhanced methanogenic pathway diversity and ensured powerful methanogenic functions.
