Abstract:The existing methods for watershed zoning have tended to be very subjective in China.This is especially true for the zoning of the water pollution control-unit,resulting from the lack of unified zoning methodologies and regulations.Aiming at this problem,a three-level zoning system or the watershed-control regions-control units system is proposed in the study.The system adopts a combined approach of qualitative and quantitative methods for the zoning study of watershed pollution control.An Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) model will be constructed at the control-unit level,which is the central piece of the system.Based on four factors,i.e.catchment characteristics,urban distribution,industrial distribution and agricultural distribution,a watershed is divided into various control units according to the main direction of various discharge sources.The system is applied to the Songhua River watershed as a study case.The whole watershed is ultimately divided into three control regions and thirty-three control-units.It is noted that ten counties including Morin Dawa Daur Autonomous Banner,are divided into two or more control units.The proposed system for the zoning study of watershed pollution control in China is based on the nature of basin catchments and fully embodies the focus and direction for the management of watershed pollution control.It sets up the implementing targets and spells out the responsibilities and missions for local governments.It thus could provide the basis and guarantee for scientifically planning and implementing watershed pollution control plans in China.

Abstract:Watershed models play an important role in modern water resource management, increasingly demanding a robust hydrologic data framework to estimate watershed hydrochemical processes. The Generalized Watershed Loading Function (GWLF), a typical watershed model with modest data requirements, has been applied to watershed-scale hydrochemical estimation worldwide. However, while it generally successfully estimates flows in humid regions, the model suffers from a weakness in hydrologic estimation during low-flow periods, which are projected to continue increasing with global climate change in many places. To address this issue, three algorithms describing functional responses of flows to saturated Water storage, the segment function approach, linear function approach, and exponential function approach, have been proposed in this paper, integrated with a previous leakage mechanism for unsaturated water storage used in two earlier GWLF versions, and applied to a case study of Shuai Shui River watershed in China. Comparisons of this version, including new algorithms or algorithm linkages, with the earlier GWLF versions, show that all the new algorithms improve model accuracy in low-flow months; the linear function approach linking the leakage process has the best effect. This work refines the framework of GWLF model to address both humid and arid conditions that can be used as alternatives for future applications. These new functional dynamic responses should also have potential application in other similar watershed models. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Coupling Watershed Environmental Model with Optimizing Method to Provide Least Cost Alternatives in Environmental Planning and Management

Abstract:Watershed environmental models were very important tools for studying water blackening and smell, eutrophication and many other problem of water pollution. Watershed environmental models comprised of pollution load models, water quality models, and aquatic-land coupling models, either mechanistic or empirical. Mechanistic models focus on characterizing hydrodynamics and transformation, and calibrating parameter through measured data of localization, empirical models focus on statistical rule for large quantities of data. Models comprehensively qualified the internal complex pollution process within entire watershed system. Pollution load models usually estimated load from pollution sources, and calculated load of pollutant discharged into rivers. Water quality models often simulated transporting and degrading processes of several pollutants in rivers, lakes, etc. Conventionally, watershed models have been widely used to evaluate non-point source pollution and analyze water quality impacted by environmental management strategies, such as emission trading. Nowadays models have been further expanded to couple with economic model for designing and optimizing environmental policy. In this paper, the coupling model of water quantity and water quality were applicated in water resource management and water environment management policy, which including water resource allocation, effect of emission trading, trade-off in cost & benefit analysis were reviewed. Finally, development and prospect of watershed environmental models were carried out. We should compare environmental impact by both the target strategy and environmental capacity strategy, which will be more meaningful. Uncertainty of model problems may also need emphasized if we continue to dig deep. Most of the researchers always set the approach of optimizing as a deterministic situation, actually, far from it. Uncertainty and risk associated with the quantification and prediction of waterborne pollutant loads and abatement effects. It may be very important practical significant to enhance the effectiveness of scientific environment planning and management.

Abstract:Understanding the effect of landscape characteristics on water quality can provide insight into mitigating water quality impairment. However, there is no consensus about the key controlling factors influencing water quality. This paper examined the combined effects of land use and topography on water quality across multi-scale, and identified the key controlling factors determining water quality variation in the headwater watershed of the Hengxi reservoir in Eastern China. Water quality impairment (WQI), expressed as a composite variable, was established to measure the overall water quality. We used the partial least squares (PLSR) method to explore the combination of landscape metrics and identify the key controlling factors. Results showed that the optimal PLSR model at 50-m, 100-m, and 150-m buffer scales and catchment scale explained 77%, 63%, 60%, and 56% of variability in WQI, respectively. At catchment scale, patch density, the percentage of paddy field, and hypsometric integral were the key controlling factors impacting water quality. At buffer scales, the slope gradient, the percentage of forest land, and topographic wetness index were more effectively determined WQI variation. Thus, the key controlling factors depend on spatial scales. Both spatial scales and corresponding key controlling factors should be considered in the adjustment of land use composition and planning of landscape configuration to better protect water quality.

Abstract:Understanding the relationship between landscape characteristics and water quality is critically important for estimating pollution potential and reducing pollution risk. Therefore, this study examines the relationship between landscape characteristics and water quality at both spatial and temporal scales. The study took place in the Jinjing River watershed in 2010; seven landscape types and four water quality pollutions were chosen as analysis parameters. Three different buffer areas along the river were drawn to analyze the relationship as a function of spatial scale. The results of a Pearson’s correlation coefficient analysis suggest that “source” landscape, namely, tea gardens, residential areas, and paddy lands, have positive effects on water quality parameters, while forests exhibit a negative influence on water quality parameters because they represent a “sink” landscape and the sub-watershed level is identified as a suitable scale. Using the principal component analysis, tea gardens, residential areas, paddy lands, and forests were identified as the main landscape index. A stepwise multiple regression analysis was employed to model the relationship between landscape characteristics and water quality for each season. The results demonstrate that both landscape composition and configuration affect water quality. In summer and winter, the landscape metrics explained approximately 80.7 % of the variance in the water quality variables, which was higher than that for spring and fall (60.3 %). This study can help environmental managers to understand the relationships between landscapes and water quality and provide landscape ecological approaches for water quality control and land use management.

Abstract:Quantifying watershed state is crucial for ecological management and sustainable development. Traditional methods, often based on multiple indicators and subjective weighting, struggle to objectively and comprehensively capture the inherent complexity of watershed ecosystems. Runoff, a key hydrological component, reflects watershed functioning, but most studies focus solely on runoff volume, limiting the ability to link runoff dynamics with surface conditions and broader system processes. This study introduced a novel approach that uses runoff complexity to represent watershed system-level state, bridging the gap between runoff dynamics and ecosystem functioning. The Hydrological Refined Composite Multiscale Entropy (Hydro_RCMFE) method was developed to quantify runoff complexity across various time scales. Combined with the Hydrological Complexity Transformer Model (HydroC_Trans) and Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP), this method explored interactions between runoff complexity and influencing factors. It was applied to the Yanhe Watershed in China’s Loess Plateau, known for severe soil erosion and large-scale ecological restoration. The results revealed significant fluctuations in runoff complexity after 2005. Vegetation cover from the Grain for Green Program enhanced self-organization, buffering climatic variability while introducing instability. Urbanization further amplified runoff complexity, while landscape factors, such as aggregation and hydrological connectivity, had spatially and temporally varied effects, highlighting the need for tailored management strategies. Upstream, efforts should enhance climate resilience, increase vegetation cover—particularly grasslands—and improve landscape aggregation. Midstream and downstream strategies should prioritize optimizing hydrological connectivity, limiting impervious surface expansion, and restoring ecological functions.

Abstract:Jianghuai Watershed is the watershed between the Yangtze River and the Huaihe River .But there exist different opinions in the literatures toward the exact area that this concept refers to .This paper addressed this problem . On a physical geography view , Jianghuai Watershed refers to the watershed between the Yangtze River and Huaihe River ,which extends from the joint area of the Yellow River , Yangtze River , and the Huaihe River to the East China Sea through the Funiu mountain ,Tongbai mountain ,Dabie mountain ,Jianghuai Hilly Area ,north bank of the Yangtze River .On a human geography view ,Jianghuai Watershed refers to "Comprehensive Management area at Jianghuai watershed "in Anhui province .The physical geography term and human geography term on the Jianghuai Watershed are quite different ,although there has close link between them .But for the convenience of making use , it is acceptable to replace the "Comprehensive Management area at Jianghuai Watershed"by a shortened one "Jianghuai Watershed".
A Feature Extraction Method Based on the Entropy-Minimal Description Length Principle and GBDT for Common Surface Water Pollution Identification

Abstract:To effectively prevent river water pollution, water quality monitoring is necessary. However, existing methods for water quality assessment are limited in terms of the characterization of water quality conditions, and few researchers have been able to focus on feature extraction methods relative to water pollution identification, or to obtain accurate water pollution source information. Thus, this study proposed a feature extraction method based on the entropy-minimal description length principle and gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT) algorithm for identifying the type of surface water pollution in consideration of the distribution characteristics and intrinsic association of conventional water quality indicators. To improve the robustness to noise, we constructed the coarse-grained discretization features of each water quality index based on information entropy. The nonlinear correlation between water quality indexes and pollution classes was excavated by the GBDT algorithm, which was utilized to acquire tree transformed features. Water samples collected by a southern city Environmental Monitoring Center were used to test the performance of the proposed algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate that features extracted by the proposed method are more effective than the water quality indicators without feature engineering and features extracted by the principal component analysis algorithm.

Abstract:Taihu watershed is a developed area in China, which is faced with serious water pollution, flood, seasonal and qualitatively water shortage. Among them water environment pollution is the main contradiction of the comprehensive control. In Taihu watershed, three key water problems are tightly related to each other, and water cycle is their common foundation. Therefore the settlement of water problems should be overall planned on the basis of water cycle, and resolved synthetically by combining two measures of the construction of water saving and antifouling society and the consummation of the water body circulation project system.

Abstract:With the development and progress of society,the problem of water environment pollution has become one of the topics which are cared and taken seriously by people.Higher requirements are brought forward to come up with the frequent and various water pollution events.The current used monitoring systems are difficult to meet the higher requirements referred before.How to monitor water quality effectively and to analyze the concentration of contaminants in water qualitatively during or after water pollution events have become arduous tasks for a water quality monitoring system.As it is known to all,there are lots of monitoring parameters in water quality detection,monitoring and information management system,and the evolution principles and changing trends of water quality are difficult to be obtained.The accuracy of water quality analysis and early-warning is hard to guarantee.Aiming to treat these problems,a new method for a water monitoring system is needed to study on.In this study,the rough set and Dempster-Shafer(D-S) evidence theories were researched,and the water quality analysis and early-warning algorithm based on rough set and D-S evidence theories were presented.The original monitoring water quality data was given(Table 1).The discretization in this paper was based on GB3838-2002,and the result of discretization was also given(Table 3).After discretization,the incomplete data and the conflicting data were deleted(Table 3).Moreover,in order to solve the problem of redundancy parameters,the rough set was used.After these steps,a minimal data list was acquired.Then,the data in the list was recovered to take the place of discrete value.Based on the function of basic probability assignment and the D-S rule of combination,the probability was assigned and the data was fused(Table 4),and the result of data fusion could reflect the water quality or the concentration of contaminants in the water qualitatively.Refer to the national standard,the value of CODMn and the water quality in different time points were acquired(Fig.4,5).The analysis results which were based on multistage function fitting and rough set theory were also given so as to compare with the result based on rough set and D-S evidence theories(Fig.2-3).Through the results of analysis,the method based on rough set and D-S evidence theories was proved to be feasible and well.Comparing to the result based on rough set and D-S evidence theories,the result based on multistage function fitting had larger deviation with the passage of time,and the result based on rough set theory had the case which could not be inferred by historical data.In conclusion,the method based on rough set and D-S evidence theories can reduce the influence of historical water data losses,conflicts and redundancy,and overcome the data shortage in practical systems.The reduction of water monitoring parameters which is based on rough set theory also reduces the calculation cost dramatically.

Abstract:Watershed ecology is an intersect discipline of hydrology, limnology, ecosystem ecology, landscape ecology, eco economics and eco management. Because of the watershed ecology's significance to watershed sustainable development, people attach importance to it increasingly. About watershed ecology, we should pay more attention to these theories and concepts as follows: society economy nature muti ecosystem, river continuum concept, ecotone theory, hierarchy theory, pattern process scale, and watershed information system. Now, the trends of watershed ecology concentrates on five points which are watershed physical process, bio service, structure and function of watershed ecosystem, watershed environment and watershed management. In East China, there is an important region, which is Taihu Lake basin. 10 percent of Chinese GNP comes from this 0.4 percent of Chinese territory. But frequent flood disaster and increasing water pollution confront regional sustainable development. Based on the deliberation watershed ecology, the significance of watershed ecology to flood disaster control, water pollution control and sustainable development in Taihu basin are discussed in this paper. It is suggested that the study and application of watershed ecology should be an effective approach to solve those problems, and that it is necessary to deepen the research.

Abstract:Trans-boundary water pollution disputes have seriously affected the regional environment security and social stability.Serious trans-boundary conflicts over water pollution have continued under the traditional slice-intersect management mode.Although coordination mechanisms have not been established in our cross-regional(basin) water disputes,some deficiencies were found after many useful explorations and practices in many areas had been conducted.Water environmental pollution has trans-boundary effects that need to be tackled multilaterally.Trans-boundary water treaties are evaluated using Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis(MCDA) to identify the most desirable treaty and suggested how existing treaties can be improved.More specifically,a flexible MCDA technique,called the Elimination Method,has been employed to analyze and compare three multilateral treaties and two bilateral trans-boundary treaties according to three main criteria,a total of 11 standards at four scales: cross state,provincial,municipal and watershed borders.The analytical results reveal limitations of these water policies with respect to conflict resolutions: ①the management policies in the absence of effective legal procedural legislation at all spatial scales;②lack of legal protection and support mechanisms,ineffective implementation;③lack of effective organizations,legal procedures and solutions through consultation mechanisms in dispute settlement mechanisms.We provide directions for the possible improvement in disputes coordination mechanisms and provide technical and policy support.

Abstract:Watershed delineation and flow direction representation are the foundations of streamflow routing in spatially distributed hydrologic modeling. A recent study showed that hexagon-based watershed discretization has several advantages compared to the traditional Cartesian (latitude–longitude) discretization, such as uniform connectivity and compatibility with other Earth system model components based on unstructured mesh systems (e.g., oceanic models). Despite these advantages, hexagon-based discretization has not been widely adopted by the current generation of hydrologic models. One major reason is that there is no existing model that can delineate hexagon-based watersheds while maintaining accurate representations of flow direction across various spatial resolutions. In this study, we explored approaches such as spatial resampling and hybrid breaching-filling stream burning techniques to improve watershed delineation and flow direction representation using a newly developed hexagonal mesh watershed delineation model (HexWatershed). We applied these improvements to the Columbia River basin and performed 16 simulations with different configurations. The results show that (1) spatial resampling modulates flow direction around headwaters and provides an opportunity to extract subgrid information; and (2) stream burning corrects the flow directions in mountainous areas with complex terrain features.

Abstract:What is the best way to divide a rugged landscape? Since ancient times, watersheds separating adjacent water systems that flow, for example, toward different seas, have been used to delimit boundaries. Interestingly, serious and even tense border disputes between countries have relied on the subtle geometrical properties of these tortuous lines. For instance, slight and even anthropogenic modifications of landscapes can produce large changes in a watershed, and the effects can be highly nonlocal. Although the watershed concept arises naturally in geomorphology, where it plays a fundamental role in water management, landslide, and flood prevention, it also has important applications in seemingly unrelated fields such as image processing and medicine. Despite the far-reaching consequences of the scaling properties on watershed-related hydrological and political issues, it was only recently that a more profound and revealing connection has been disclosed between the concept of watershed and statistical physics of disordered systems. This review initially surveys the origin and definition of a watershed line in a geomorphological framework to subsequently introduce its basic geometrical and physical properties. Results on statistical properties of watersheds obtained from artificial model landscapes generated with long-range correlations are presented and shown to be in good qualitative and quantitative agreement with real landscapes.

Abstract:Previously proposed discriminant methods cannot accurately identify water sources in a complex multiaquifer mine. Based on statistical analysis of the water chemistry of samples collected at the Xinji no. 2 multiaquifer coal mine, a comprehensive stepwise discriminant method was proposed for this purpose. Characteristic ion contrast and ion proportional coefficients were applied to aquifers with distinct chemical characteristics to establish a characteristic index discrimination system. Aquifers with small differences in water chemistry were identified by the Fisher discriminant method. Different methods (first simple ones, followed by more complex ones) were used to distinguish the water sources of different aquifers. This approach enabled us to identify water sources for the Xinji no. 2 mine and should be tried for other sites with similar hydrogeological conditions.

Abstract:A SWAT model of the Luxi watershed was used as an example with various levels of support data to evaluate the model results as a function of watershed subdivision size. The results show that the outputs are not always improved by finer subdivisions. Geostatistics tools were used to assess the spatial heterogeneity of the study areas with two sets of support data. Comparison of the model output to the watershed subdivisions shows that the correlation length, L, of the study area is the key factor determining how the watershed should be partitioned. A reasonable value of A, where A is the average areas of the sub-basins, should be larger than L/3 but less than L/2.

Abstract:The land utilization thematic and digital river networks are classified using remote sensing and GIS in basin scale.The landscape index and transfer matrix are applied to analyze digital river networks,landscape index and spatial-temporal heterogeneity between hydrological process variables in Huangnizhuang Basin.The result shows that the landscape pattern of underlying surface in Huangnizhuang Basin exist multi-scale features;drainage pattern has some orderliness and periodicity;arable land to grassland and bare landscape pattern have upward trend;the landscape average fractal dimension reflects that a watershed is less disturbed by human activities;the pattern of valley landscape adjustment is conducive to optimizing the hydrological processes and watershed management.

Considering the needs of water environmental protection at watershed scale, it is necessary to study how the type, pattern and spatial difference of landscape influence water pollution process. By reasonable allocation and complex design of landscape pattern, optimal landscape will change the distribution characteristics of pollution and stop the diffusion of pollution at spatial space. This will do good to water environmental protection and non-point pollution decrease. In order to realize this target, this paper constructs a conceptual framework for landscape pattern optimization concerning water environmental protection. This framework mainly considers four aspects as follows:(1) the feasible usage of 'Source' and 'Sink' landscape with spatial differences as optimization rules; (2) the key points in 'Source' and 'Sink' landscape pattern optimization; (3) some limits such as quantity, cost and other things that influence the change of 'Source' and 'Sink' landscape; and (4) the combination of the landscape quantity optimization with the landscape spacial optimization. On the basis of these results, this paper fulfills a conceptual framework of landscape optimization concerning the water environmental protection and non-point pollution decrease. According to an optimal combination of these four aspects, we could analyze the studying area characteristics, clear studying aims, confine optimal rules and carry out the research step by step. With some controlling methods of landscape ecology optimization, the landscape pattern optimization and water protection will be also realized. This study supplies not only a new view for resolving non-point pollution problem at watershed scale, but also a valid measure for decreasing the influence of landscape type and pattern on water quality.
