Abstract:The existing methods for watershed zoning have tended to be very subjective in China.This is especially true for the zoning of the water pollution control-unit,resulting from the lack of unified zoning methodologies and regulations.Aiming at this problem,a three-level zoning system or the watershed-control regions-control units system is proposed in the study.The system adopts a combined approach of qualitative and quantitative methods for the zoning study of watershed pollution control.An Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) model will be constructed at the control-unit level,which is the central piece of the system.Based on four factors,i.e.catchment characteristics,urban distribution,industrial distribution and agricultural distribution,a watershed is divided into various control units according to the main direction of various discharge sources.The system is applied to the Songhua River watershed as a study case.The whole watershed is ultimately divided into three control regions and thirty-three control-units.It is noted that ten counties including Morin Dawa Daur Autonomous Banner,are divided into two or more control units.The proposed system for the zoning study of watershed pollution control in China is based on the nature of basin catchments and fully embodies the focus and direction for the management of watershed pollution control.It sets up the implementing targets and spells out the responsibilities and missions for local governments.It thus could provide the basis and guarantee for scientifically planning and implementing watershed pollution control plans in China.

Abstract:Monitoring of changing lake and wetland environments has long been among the primary focus of scientific investigation, technology innovation, management practice, and decision-making analysis. Floodpath lakes and wetlands are the lakes and associated wetlands affected by seasonal variations of water level and water surface area. Floodpath lakes and wetlands are, in particular, sensitive to natural and anthropogenic impacts, such as climate change, human-induced intervention on hydrological regimes, and land use and land cover change. Rapid developments of remote sensing science and technologies, provide immense opportunities and capacities to improve our understanding of the changing lake and wetland environments. This special issue on Remote Sensing of Floodpath Lakes and Wetlands comprise featured articles reporting the latest innovative research and reflects the advancement in remote sensing applications on the theme topic. In this editorial paper, we review research developments using state-of-the-art remote sensing technologies for monitoring dynamics of floodpath lakes and wetlands; discuss challenges of remote sensing in inventory, monitoring, management, and governance of floodpath lakes and wetlands; and summarize the highlights of the articles published in this special issue.

Abstract:: Since ancient times, humans have lived near water, depending on water for survival and progress. There is a close link between the environmental quality of a lake or river basin and human activity, with the role of their ecological services being of vital importance to local communities. As an advanced technology, satellite remote sensing can monitor the spatial dynamics of the current situation, as well as look back to determine the temporal dynamics of aquatic environments. This allows, when combined with modeling, the possibility to project the future situation in order to improve planning and environmental management. Remote sensing can play an irreplaceable role for humans to understand, monitor, and manage basin environments for the present and future generations. This article focuses on the remote sensing of lake and river basins, exploring different research objectives, addressing the basic theoretical framework, analyzing the state-of-the-art in Chinese and international research programs, and pointing to priorities for future development.

Abstract:While there have been advancements in hydrological science and water resources management, the world continues to face a water‐supply crisis. In light of studies that report the missing links to be i) effective collaborations between researchers and practitioners and ii) interdisciplinary working, we promote the benefits of Watershed Science to address these gaps. Watershed Science incorporates basin hydrology, determines water resource thresholds, promotes water governance that forms partnerships between institutions, and enacts participatory decision making in water resources management. However, such partnerships must recognize the differential power and interests of different actors to ensure that outcomes are not skewed in favor of particular interests. It adds value to existing water management programs and has great potential for bringing disciplines and decision making together to address the global water crisis. Abstract:ABSTRACT Introduction : The application of remote-sensing techniques for water quality assessment has become increasingly popular in China. However, existing reviews are often limited to qualitative description and are quite fragmented. Outcomes : We conducted a quantitative systematic review to display current research status and identify the existing challenges and future directions. Our review revealed that the application of remote-sensing techniques in water quality research has expanded dramatically in China, but the spatial distribution is quite uneven. Second, the ground object spectrometer is the most widely applied data source. Water color indicators such as chlorophyll a and suspended solid are the most widely investigated in China. Third, semiempirical method is the most commonly used inversion method. Existing studies rarely considered the anthropogenic factors, which limited the model robustness and its application in human-dominated aquatic ecosystems. Discussion and Conclusion : We concluded that, in the past several decades, China has made notable progresses in monitoring and evaluation of water quality using the remote-sensing techniques (especially in inland lakes). We proposed that further improvements would be needed in terms of temporal and spatial coverage, indicator list, the incorporation of human–nature interactions, inversion accuracy, and model generalization.

Abstract:WATER experiment is a simultaneous airborne, satellite-borne and ground-based remote sensing experiment taken place in the Heihe river Basin, a typical inland river basin in northwest China. Many teams contributed to the WATER through their participation. In total, 28 institutions and more than 280 scientists,students,engineers and aircrews participated in the field campaigns of WATER. This paper in- troduces the research progresses since the intensive observation period of WATER, which was completed in 2008. The most important outcome of the WATER is its multi-scale,high-quality,and integrated observa- tional data sets,which was officially released and opened to public from July 2010. It offers supports for the development,improvement and validation of a series of ecological, hydrological, and quantitative remote sensing models. The designed objective to break through the data bottleneck in integrated -watershed study has been accomplished. In addition, the WATER has achieved abundant research resultS in ①retrieving snow parameters, surface soil freeze/thaw state, forest structure parameters, evapotranspiration, soil water content and biogeophysical parameters from remote sensing; ② hydrometeorology observation;③ and de- velopment of scaling methods, hydrological models and data assimilation system. The highlights of WA- TER include improvement of remote sensing models on estimating evapotranspiration, application of air- borne LiDAR,and development and application of a multi-angle thermal infrared remote sensing sensor. It is also illustrated that the airborne remote sensing is still playing an irreplaceable role in obtaining high- quality and high-resolution data.
A Review of Wetland Remote Sensing

Abstract:Wetlands are some of the most important ecosystems on Earth. They play a key role in alleviating floods and filtering polluted water and also provide habitats for many plants and animals. Wetlands also interact with climate change. Over the past 50 years, wetlands have been polluted and declined dramatically as land cover has changed in some regions. Remote sensing has been the most useful tool to acquire spatial and temporal information about wetlands. In this paper, seven types of sensors were reviewed: aerial photos coarse-resolution, medium-resolution, high-resolution, hyperspectral imagery, radar, and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data. This study also discusses the advantage of each sensor for wetland research. Wetland research themes reviewed in this paper include wetland classification, habitat or biodiversity, biomass estimation, plant leaf chemistry, water quality, mangrove forest, and sea level rise. This study also gives an overview of the methods used in wetland research such as supervised and unsupervised classification and decision tree and object-based classification. Finally, this paper provides some advice on future wetland remote sensing. To our knowledge, this paper is the most comprehensive and detailed review of wetland remote sensing and it will be a good reference for wetland researchers.

Abstract:The Watershed Allied Telemetry Experimental Research (WATER) is a simultaneous airborne, satellite-borne, and ground-based remote sensing experiment aiming to improve the observability, understanding, and predictability of hydrological and related ecological processes at a catchment scale. WATER consists of the cold region, forest, and arid region hydrological experiments as well as a hydrometeorology experiment and took place in the Heihe River Basin, a typical inland river basin in the northwest of China. The field campaigns have been completed, with an intensive observation period lasting from 7 March to 12 April, from 15 May to 22 July, and from 23 August to 5 September 2008: in total, 120 days. Twenty-five airborne missions were flown. Airborne sensors including microwave radiometers at L, K, and Ka bands, imaging spectrometer, thermal imager, CCD, and lidar were used. Various satellite data were collected. Ground measurements were carried out at four scales, that is, key experimental area, foci experimental area, experiment site, and elementary sampling plot, using ground-based remote sensing instruments, densified network of automatic meteorological stations, flux towers, and hydrological stations. On the basis of these measurements, the remote sensing retrieval models and algorithms of water cycle variables are to be developed or improved, and a catchment-scale land/hydrological data assimilation system is being developed. This paper reviews the background, scientific objectives, experiment design, filed campaign implementation, and current status of WATER. The analysis of the data will continue over the next 2 years, and limited revisits to the field are anticipated.
Research on Spatial and Temporal Heterogeneity of Watershed Landscape Pattern

Abstract:The land utilization thematic and digital river networks are classified using remote sensing and GIS in basin scale.The landscape index and transfer matrix are applied to analyze digital river networks,landscape index and spatial-temporal heterogeneity between hydrological process variables in Huangnizhuang Basin.The result shows that the landscape pattern of underlying surface in Huangnizhuang Basin exist multi-scale features;drainage pattern has some orderliness and periodicity;arable land to grassland and bare landscape pattern have upward trend;the landscape average fractal dimension reflects that a watershed is less disturbed by human activities;the pattern of valley landscape adjustment is conducive to optimizing the hydrological processes and watershed management.

Abstract:Bibliometrics was used to statistically analyze key zones within the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and national ministries over the past 20 years. This study determined that funds that derived from national ministries have mainly focused on issues related to environmental pollution, ecological security, technological water regulations, and river basin ecosystems, which offer a better understanding of the national requirements and the scientific knowledge of the YRB in combination with data from the NSFC. Under a background of bolstering the construction of green ecological corridors in the economic belt of the YRB, this study proposes future conceptual watershed research initiatives in this region as a study objective by reinforcing the implementation of the Chinese Ecosystem Research Network (CERN) and by emphasizing the use of new technologies, new methods, and new concepts for the prospective design of frontier research under the perspective of geoscience and earth system science. This study promotes large-scale scientific field and research objectives based on big science and big data.

Abstract:The water and carbon cycles are tightly linked and play a key role in the material and energy flows between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere, but the interactions of water and carbon cycles are not quite clear. The global climate change and intensive human activities could also complicate the water and carbon coupling processes. Better understanding the coupled water-carbon cycles and their spatiotemporal evolution can inform management and decision-making efforts regarding carbon uptake, food production, water resources, and climate change. The integration of remote sensing and numeric modeling is an attractive approach to address the challenge. Remote sensing can provide extensive data for a number of variables at regional scale and support models, whereas process-based modeling can facilitate investigating the processes that remote sensing cannot well handle (e.g., below-ground and lateral material movement) and backcast/forecast the impacts of environmental change. Over the past twenty years, an increasing number of studies using a variety of remote sensing products together with numeric models have examined the water-carbon interactions. This article reviewed the methodologies for integrating remote sensing data into these models and the modeling of water-carbon coupling processes. We first summarized the major remote sensing datasets and models used for studying the coupled water-carbon cycles. We then provided an overview of the methods for integrating remote sensing data into water-carbon models, and discussed their strengths and challenges. We also prospected the development of potential new remote sensing datasets, modeling methods, and their potential applications in the field of eco-hydrology.

Abstract:AbstractWatersheds are the basic unit of Earth's terrestrial systems and are therefore ideal units for the study of critical zones (CZs). However, grand challenges remain regarding the observation, modeling, and management of CZs and watershed systems. We synthesize the progress and breakthroughs associated with watershed science and CZ research in the Heihe River basin (HRB), a large‐scale endorheic river basin with unique mountain cryosphere‐oasis‐desert landscapes and prominent human‐nature competition for water resources. The HRB observation system consists of mountain cryosphere, agricultural oasis, and natural oasis observatories and is promoted by large‐scale comprehensive experiments to achieve multiscale observations. A watershed system model that couples ecohydrological models with socioeconomic models is developed to investigate the complex interactions among water, ecology, and socioeconomics in the HRB. The model is embedded in a decision support system to bridge science and decision‐making and to better serve river basin sustainability. Significant progress and breakthroughs have been made in CZ and watershed process research (e.g., cryospheric hydrological processes, ecological and hydrological interactions, and surface‐groundwater interactions) in the HRB. Nevertheless, observation and modeling of geochemical and geomorphological processes in the CZ have not been well addressed in integrated watershed studies of the HRB. In the future, new observation technologies, agent‐based models, machine learning, and data assimilation will benefit both watershed science and CZ science and help to address complexity and dynamics in the CZ at the river basin scale. Overall, the HRB has successfully demonstrated how an experimental river basin can link CZ science with watershed science.

Abstract:The Earth’s water cycle involves energy exchange and mass movement in the hydrosphere and thus sustains the dynamic balance of global hydrologic cycle. All water cycle variables on the Earth are closely interconnected with each other through the process of energy and water circulation. Observing, understanding and predicting the storage, movement, and quality of water remains a grand challenge for contemporary water science and technology, especially for researches across different spatio-temporal scales. The remote sensing observing platform has a unique advantage in acquiring complex water information and has already greatly improved observing, understanding, and predicting ability of the water cycle. Methods of obtaining comprehensive water cycle data are also expanded by new remote sensing techniques, and the vast amount of data has become increasingly available and thus accelerated a new Era: the Remote Sensing Big Data Study of Global Water Cycle. The element inversion, time and space reconstruction, and scale conversion are three key scientific issues for remote sensing water cycle in such Era. Moreover, it also presents a huge opportunity of capitalizing the combinations of Remote Sensing and Big Data to advance and improve the global hydrology and water security research and development, and uncork the new bottlenecks.
Improving on mapping long-term surface water with a novel framework based on the Landsat imagery series

Abstract:Surface water plays a crucial role in the ecological environment and societal development. Remote sensing detection serves as a significant approach to understand the temporal and spatial change in surface water series (SWS) and to directly construct long-term SWS. Limited by various factors such as cloud, cloud shadow, and problematic satellite sensor monitoring, the existent surface water mapping datasets might be short and incomplete due to losing raw information on certain dates. Improved algorithms are desired to increase the completeness and quality of SWS datasets. The present study proposes an automated framework to detect SWS, based on the Google Earth Engine and Landsat satellite imagery. This framework incorporates implementing a raw image filtering algorithm to increase available images, thereby expanding the completeness. It improves OTSU thresholding by replacing anomaly thresholds with the median value, thus enhancing the accuracy of SWS datasets. Gaps caused by Landsat7 ETM + SLC-off are respired with the random forest algorithm and morphological operations. The results show that this novel framework effectively expands the long-term series of SWS for three surface water bodies with distinct geomorphological patterns. The evaluation of confusion matrices suggests the good performance of extracting surface water, with the overall accuracy ranging from 0.96 to 0.97, and user's accuracy between 0.96 and 0.98, producer's accuracy ranging from 0.83 to 0.89, and Matthews correlation coefficient ranging from 0.87 to 0.9 for several spectral water indices (NDWI, MNDWI, ANNDWI, and AWEI). Compared with the Global Reservoirs Surface Area Dynamics (GRSAD) dataset, our constructed datasets promote greater completeness of SWS datasets by 27.01%–91.89% for the selected water bodies. The proposed framework for detecting SWS shows good potential in enlarging and completing long-term global-scale SWS datasets, capable of supporting assessments of surface-water-related environmental management and disaster prevention.

Abstract:This paper reviewed and summarized the progresses on the remote sensing-based inversion and estimation of hydrological and ecological variables/parameters,within the framework of the Watershed Allied Telemetry Experimental Research(WATER) project.We make progresses in remote sensing of hydrological variables as follows:The basin-scale precipitation observation with high accuracy are carried out with a truck-mounted dual polarized Doppler radar in the upstream and midstream of the Heihe River basin,aiming to obtain the quantitative relationship between the precipitation rate,radar reflectivity and its polarization information.The substantial developments and improvements of remote sensing estimation models of evapotranspiration are achieved with the aid of multi-source observations.A retrieval algorithm of snow depth in the mountainous area is developed by using the K and Ka band airborne microwave radiometry.The method to eliminate the influence of surface roughness on soil moisture remote sensing is proposed by using the multi-angles SAR data.We also succeed in the remote sensing estimation of ecological-process variables/parameters as follows:Fine land surface classification method is developed by combining information from airborne laser radar and high-resolution optical images.The C3/C4 vegetation functional type classification is realized by integrating the vegetation fluorescence under solar light condition extracted from the hyper-spectral airborne remote sensing images,and NDVI information.The methods using multi-angles and multi-spectrums remote sensing information to retrieve the LAI are improved,especially exploiting the potential of LiDAR to obtain the vegetation vertical structure,and the scale conversion of remote sensing based LAI is also explored.Other progresses include developing a new method to retrieve light-use efficiency using fluorescence information from hyperspectral data,proposing an inversion model of FPAR taking the soil reflectance and canopy structure into considerations,improving the remote sensing estimation model of ecosystem productivity and developing a method to obtain chlorophyll content and chlorophyll fluorescence intensity by using hyper-spectral remote sensing data.

Abstract:Watershed management is an ever-evolving practice involving the management of land, water, biota, and other resources in a defined area for ecological, social, and economic purposes. In this paper, we explore the following questions: How has watershed management evolved? What new tools are available and how can they be integrated into sustainable watershed management? To address these questions, we discuss the process of developing integrated watershed management strategies for sustainable management through the incorporation of adaptive management techniques and traditional ecological knowledge. We address the numerous benefits from integration across disciplines and jurisdictional boundaries, as well as the incorporation of technological advancements, such as remote sensing, GIS, big data, and multi-level social-ecological systems analysis, into watershed management strategies. We use three case studies from China, Europe, and Canada to review the success and failure of integrated watershed management in addressing different ecological, social, and economic dilemmas in geographically diverse locations. Although progress has been made in watershed management strategies, there are still numerous issues impeding successful management outcomes; many of which can be remedied through holistic management approaches, incorporation of cutting-edge science and technology, and cross-jurisdictional coordination. We conclude by highlighting that future watershed management will need to account for climate change impacts by employing technological advancements and holistic, cross-disciplinary approaches to ensure watersheds continue to serve their ecological, social, and economic functions. We present three case studies in this paper as a valuable resource for scientists, resource managers, government agencies, and other stakeholders aiming to improve integrated watershed management strategies and more efficiently and successfully achieve ecological and socio-economic management objectives.

Abstract:Watershed Allied Telemetry Experimental Research(WATER) is a simultaneous airborne,satellite-borne and ground-based remote sensing experiment conducted in the Heihe River Basin,a typical inland river basin in the northwest of China.To develop an open and free,multi-scale,high quality,and integrated dataset is one of the major objectives of WATER.After a data processing period lasting for two years from mid-2008 to mid-2010,the dataset is now available at http://westdc.westgis.ac.cn/water or http://rsdc.bnu.edu.cn for open access.As a preface of the WATER data special issue,we introduce the significance of the WATER data information system,datasets collected during WATER observation periods,data quality control,and data sharing policy.Researchers both in China and globally are invited to use the data in watershed hydrological and ecological modeling,quantitative remote sensing,and other research works.Feedbacks are invited in order to further improve the data quality.
