Abstract:Harnessing their excellent physical attributes, two-dimensional nanostructures have gained prominences as re-inforcements in polymer nanocomposites. Given the intricate structure of nanofillers and the varied interfacial connections, in-depth understanding of the strengthening mechanisms becomes pivotal for optimizing nano-composite design. By varying the GO's morphology, a notable divergence of approximately 30% is evident in the interfacial shear strength. This divergence is attributed to the mechanical interlocking effect instigated by the presence of -O-and-OH functional groups. Functionalizing with groups like-CH3-CH2-NH2 (-Ethylamine) and-(HOCH2)3CNH2 (-TRIS) enhances the mass density of PE polymers at the interphase, which changes the interface sliding (low-density interphase) to the cohesive sliding during the pull-out process. As a result, the maximum interfacial shear strength (204-223 MPa) of these two samples is much larger than that of the pristine GO/PE (149-151 MPa), and even comparable with the pure PE's tensile strength. Intriguingly, shorter or highly flexible functional group exhibit a comparatively weaker influence on the interfacial shear strength. Moreover, as the sliding surface shifts toward the cohesive zone, diminishing sample thickness (less than 60 angstrom) generally corre-sponds to augmented interfacial shear strength due to the boundary confinement effect. In summary, this work offers a comprehensively elucidation of GO/PE pull-out behavior, facilitating the design of nanocomposites with exceptional mechanical performance.
A Cross-Linking Graphene Oxide-Polyethyleneimine Hybrid Film Containing Ciprofloxacin: One-Step Preparation, Controlled Drug Release and Antibacterial Performance.

Abstract:A novel drug delivery system based on a graphene oxide film cross-linked by polyethyleneimine was prepared via a one-step preparation technique. Due to cross-linking, the stability of the film was significantly improved compared with the bare graphene oxide film and an extra drug-loading site was endowed to the film by PEI. The release behavior of ciprofloxacin, as a model drug, was investigated under various pH values in vitro, and the results exhibited slow drug release without an initial burst effect. Release kinetic models were employed to represent the drug release processes, and the release behavior of ciprofloxacin of the resulting cross-linking film was consistent with near zero-order kinetics. In comparison to a graphene oxide-polyethyleneimine hybrid film, the ciprofloxacin loaded hybrid film exhibited a significant antibacterial effect due to the ciprofloxacin release and diffusion from the film. This study provides insight into the design of suitable cross-linking GO hybrid films for biomedical field and many other applications.
Strong yet tough graphene/graphene oxide hybrid films

Abstract:Freestanding graphene films (GFs) have attracted extensive attention due to outstanding properties. Nevertheless, GFs show poor mechanical property because of lacking inter-laminar bonding although thermal conductivity is fascinating. Graphene oxide (GO), derivative of graphene, can act as glue to adhere different substrates depending on functional groups to boost connection between substrates. Here, we prepared GO/graphene hybrid films using GO to improve the strength by Meyer method. When GO concentration increases, the tensile strength is ever enhanced from 8 to 90 MPa, which was further increased after annealing at 1500°C. Meanwhile, the film shows excellent fracture toughness, the toughness was improved to 0.86 MJ/m3 when GO increases to 50 wt%. After 5000 cycles, the films still demonstrate excellent fatigue property and flexibility performance. Furthermore, the hybrid films show excellent electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (above 60 dB at 8-12 GHz). Although the annealing temperature is as low as 1500 °C, its thermal conductivity of the hybrid film with GO loading of 50wt% still remains 600 Wm-1K-1. Our hybrid strategy provides a new way to achieve multifunctional graphene films at low annealing temperature, which is promising in flexible device application.

Abstract:Transforming the microscopic graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets into macroscopic film materials holds significant promise for various applications. However, those GO films normally suffer from low tensile strength and poor toughness. Optimizing the assembly of GO nanosheets, especially in designing the interactions between adjacent nanosheets, remains challenging. Herein, inspired by mussels, we incorporated polymer rich in UPy functional units into GO films, namely GUPy films. The multiple hydrogen bonding between the UPy units and oxygen-containing groups on GO nanosheets resulted in highly stretchable and tough GO films. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the presence of UPy in the films, revealing tightly linked layered structures at the microscopic level. Macroscopically, the films displayed exceptional flexibility, withstanding folding and curling without damage. Tensile tests demonstrated the superior mechanical properties of the GUPy film, which boasts a Young's modulus of 1100.5 MPa, fracture strain of 24.0%, tensile strength of 183.5 MPa, and toughness of 19.5 MJ m −3 . These values are 2.3, 2.4, 6.0, and 12.2 times higher than those of pure GO films, respectively, and significantly exceed those of control films lacking UPy. Additionally, cyclic tensile tests confirmed the excellent energy dissipation capability of the GUPy film. This bio-inspired strategy offers a promising route for developing high-performance two-dimensional materials, expanding their potential applications.

Abstract:We reported herein a novel two-step method combining gel casting and surface crosslinking to fabricate mechanically robust films. Polymer-mediated graphene oxide (GO) films (GOFs) were initially prepared by castdrying gels containing GO and small amounts of rationally designed polymer, followed by surface crosslinking in EuCl3 solution. Multiple interactions including hydrogen bonds, pp interactions, and coordinative bonds were purposefully engineered among GOFs. The resulting GOFs exhibited high strength (112.1 MPa) and toughness (1.7 MJm(-3)). Moreover, chemical reduction endows these films with high electrical conductivity (21.2 Scm(-1)), and they could be used as flexible electromagnetic interference shielding materials with a shield effectiveness of 15.9 dB. This method for the fabrication of functional graphene-based films with strength-toughness balance is simple, environmentally friendly, and scalable to industrial levels.

Abstract:High strength polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) nanocomposite membranes were prepared via synergistic ionic complexation between graphene oxide/carbon nanotubes nanofillers (GO/CNT) and oppositely charged polyelectrolytes of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and poly(2-methacryloyloxy ethyl trimethylammonium chloride) (PDMC). Ultraviolet-visible, Raman spectroscopy and microscopies results demonstrated that the combination of one-dimensional CNTs and two-dimensional GO nanosheets lead to an integrated three-dimensional network through π-π interaction with GO distributed parallel to the surface of PEC membranes. Besides, CNTs and GO nanosheets are tightly encapsulated by PEC matrix through electrostatic interactions. The tensile strength of PEC/GO-CNT nanocomposite membrane containing 3wt% GO-CNT (1:1, w/w) was 155.4MPa, showing 2.3 and 1.6 times as high as that of PEC/CNT and PEC/GO membranes, respectively. Moreover, PEC/GO-CNT membranes showed improved separation performance and operation stability with introduction of the three-dimensional network constructed by GO and CNT.

Abstract:Polyimide/inorganics hybrid films fabricated by conventional approaches, including an in situ polymerization method, the sol-gel process, and a solution blending method, have a dramatic drop in malleability. In this work, a hydrogel strategy for preparing ductile polyimide/reduced graphene oxide (PI/rGO) nanohybrid films with internal porous structures has been proposed. The hydrogel strategy involved two steps. The polyamide acid carboxylate/GO (PAAC/GO) films were first prepared by tape casting, followed by a gelation process of the PAAC/GO aqueous solution; the PI/rGO films were then obtained after an imidization reaction of the PAAC/GO films. Interestingly, in this strategy, the PAA chains tended to self-assemble into microdomain crystalline structures assisted by their interactions with water, as revealed by XRD and Raman spectroscopy. The present PI/rGO films display more uniform microstructures, without aggregation of the rGO nanosheets. Furthermore, they exhibited an enhanced toughness property, with a high elongation at break of 37-55%. In addition, their dielectric property is more stable and less frequency-dependent due to the internal porous structure. This hydrogel strategy would appear to be a promising candidate for fabricating hybrid PI-inorganic composite materials, even other hybrid organic/inorganic composite materials with specific features.

Abstract:Exfoliated graphite oxide (GO) sheets with hydroxyl groups and amine groups on the surface were prepared by modification of graphite. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiator molecules were grafted onto the GO sheets by reactions of 2-bromo-2-methylpropionyl bromide with hydroxyl groups and amine groups. Poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) chains on the surface of GO sheets were synthesized by in-situ ATRP. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results all demonstrated that polymer chains were successfully produced. After grafting of PDMAEMA, the dispersity of GO sheets in solvents was improved significantly. Poly(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate-co-methacrylic acid) particles were deposited on GO sheets via hydrogen bonding between MAA units on polymer particles and amine groups of PDMAEMA. TEM and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the structure of the nanocomposites.
Strong and Ductile Poly(vinyl Alcohol)/graphene Oxide Composite Films with a Layered Structure

Abstract:We report the preparation of mechanically strong and ductile poly(vinyl alcohol)/graphene oxide (GO) composite films with a layered structure simply by vacuum filtration. The Young’s modulus and tensile yield strength of the composite film containing 3wt.% GO were measured to be 4.8GPa and 110±7MPa, respectively. Furthermore, it is flexible and exhibits a large elongation at break (36±4%). The high mechanical properties of the composite films are mainly due to the homogeneous dispersion and alignment of GO sheets in the polymer matrix and strong interfacial interactions between both components.

Abstract:The reinforcing effect of graphene oxide (GO) and its derivatives for polymer matrices highly depends on their dispersion therein. Thus, a facile method was developed to enhance the dispersibility of GO via compounding with γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GO–KH570). The interfacial interactions between GO and KH570, as well as the surface morphology, chemical composition and polarity, were investigated by molecular dynamics simulation combined with experimental methods. Findings indicate that KH570 can successfully graft onto the surface of GO nanosheets via the covalent bonding, and the polarity of the as-obtained GO–KH570 can be tuned by adjusting the dosage of KH570. Besides, the GO–KH570 was further used as the filler to improve performances of polyimide (PI) matrix. After using this GO–KH570 composite, the PI-based coating was endowed with excellent wear resistance and corrosion resistance properties. Particularly, PI/GO–KH570-2 coating with a GO–KH570-2 dosage of 0.5 wt% exhibits much higher hardness, showing promising potential as the candidate high-performance coating in aerospace and marine industries.

Abstract:Converting natural graphite to high-performance graphene films is very attractive due to graphite's abundance. However, this conversion is challenging to do inexpensively and under ambient conditions. One of the major challenges is how to design the interface between adjacent graphene nanosheets to integrate high strength, high toughness, and high conductivity into graphene films. Here, we demonstrate that a long-chain π-π bonding agent can bridge reduced graphene oxide nanosheets into ultrastrong, supertough, and highly conductive graphene films. The strain dependence of Raman frequency shift and molecular dynamics simulations together reveal the strengthening and toughening mechanisms. Additionally, the long-chain π-bridging induces substantial improvement in the graphene nanosheet alignment. The tensile strength and toughness are 1,054 MPa and 36 MJ/m3, surpassing those of reported graphene films. Meanwhile, the electrical conductivity reaches 1,192 S/cm, comparable with high-temperature annealed graphene films. The bioinspired strategy opens an avenue for the assembly of nanoscale building blocks into high-performance films.

Enhancement of thermal and mechanical properties of flexible graphene oxide/carbon nanotube hybrid films though direct covalent bonding

Abstract:The thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of graphene oxide/multiwalled carbon nanotube (GO/MWCNT) hybrid films with and without covalent bonding were examined. Chlorinated GO and amino-functionalized MWCNT were bonded covalently to fabricate chemically bonded GO/MWCNT hybrid films. Mixtures of surface-modified GO and MWCNT were filtered and then subjected to hot-pressing to fabricate stacked films. Examination of these chemically bonded hybrid films revealed higher thermal conductivity than in physically bonded hybrid films, because of the synergetic interaction of functional groups in GO and MWCNT in the films. However, the addition of excess MWCNT to the films led to an increased phonon scattering density and a decreased thermal conductivity. The hybrid films fabricated by the optimized process endured about 20000 bending cycles without rupturing or losing their thermal conductivity. The mechanical properties showed enhanced performance after increased MWCNT loading at elevated temperature due to the reinforcement effect of the MWCNT between GO layers.

Graphene Oxide-Driven Design of Strong and Flexible Biopolymer Barrier Films: From Smart Crystallization Control to Affordable Engineering

Abstract:Development of multifunctional, versatile biobased polymers can greatly benefit from the discovery and application of 2D sheet-like materials. For instance, the hybrid system integrating graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets with enantiomeric poly(lactic acid) (PLA) showcases several key properties that can address emerging multifunction needs such as good gas barrier and high thermal resistance. Here we revealed that large specific surface area and homogeneous dispersion of GO conferred the construction of interconnected networks in PLA even with relatively low GO contents (0.1 and 0.5 wt %). These well-extended GO nanosheets were ready to provide enormous and active platforms to nucleate preferentially the neighboring stereocomplex chains, prompting the prevailing development of stereocomplex crystals (SCs). The notable scenario associated with the GO distribution was imaged by 2D Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and was further elucidated by dynamic crystallization. More importantly, the nanosheets decorated with ordered PLA lamellae, in turn, contributed to the impressive enhancement in barrier and mechanical properties and chemical resistance. For example, a distinct decrease of 98.5% in oxygen permeability coefficient was observed for the composite films containing 0.5 wt % GO (6.264 × 10–17 cm3 cm cm–2 s–1 Pa–1) compared to the control sample crystallized at 150 °C (4.214 × 10–15 cm3 cm cm–2 s–1 Pa–1). The performance distinction was accompanied by the unusual combination of high tensile strength (73.5 MPa) and high elongation (13.6%), displaying an increase of 31.7% and 183.3% compared to the counterpart, respectively. This may provide a broader context for exploiting 2D nanosheets as robust cells to advance the function and property of PLA, which helps to outline the roadmap for fashioning high-performance, affordable bioplastics.

Realizing Spontaneously Regular Stacking of Pristine Graphene Oxide by a Chemical-Structure-Engineering Strategy for Mechanically Strong Macroscopic Films

Abstract:Mechanical-electrical properties of macroscopic graphene films derived from graphene oxide (GO) sheets are substantially restricted by their surface wrinkles and structural misalignment. Herein, we propose a chemical-structure-engineering strategy to realize the spontaneously regular stacking of modified GO (GO-m) with trace carboxyl. The highly aligned GO-m film delivers a fracture strength and modulus of nearly 3- and 5-fold higher than a wrinkled film with conventional Hummer's method derived GO (GO-c). The favorable assembly pattern of GO-m sheets is attributed to their decreased interfacial friction on the atomic scale, which weakens their local gelation capability for freer configuration adjustment during the assembly process. The chemical structure of GO-m can be further engineered by an epoxide-to-hydroxyl reaction, achieving a record high tensile strength of up to 631 MPa for the pristine GO film. By exploring the relationship between the surface terminations of GO and its stacking mode, this work proves the feasibility to realize high-performance macroscopic materials with optimized microstructure through the chemical modulation of nanosheet assembly.

Atomically Thin Polymer Layer Enhances Toughness of Graphene Oxide Monolayers

Abstract:During the last decade, two-dimensional (2D) materials have emerged as versatile building blocks for the next generation of engineered materials. However, the intrinsically brittle behavior of 2D materials has thus far delayed their adoption in applications such as sensors and structural materials. Herein, we demonstrate a strategy for toughening graphene oxide (GO) through synergistic interfacial interactions between GO monolayers and ultrathin layers of strongly interacting poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). By creating GO-PVA and PVA-GO-PVA nanolaminates, we demonstrate a 2-fold increase in GO toughness, which translates into dramatic increases in energy dissipation and piercing resistance. Atomistic simulations show that this remarkable behavior arises from a polymer chain crack-bridging mechanism, resulting from a synergistic combination of interdomain reinforcements across the GO monolayer and extensive GO-polymer interfacial hydrogen-bonding interactions. The reported findings highlight the potential for achieving engineered 2D materials with superior mechanical properties by incorporating deformation and failure-resistant mechanics arising from tailored chemical interactions between constituents.

Abstract:Taking advantage of the strong charge interactions between negatively charged graphene oxide (GO) sheets and positively charged poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA), self-assembled multilayer films of (GO/PDDA) n were created on hydroxylated silicon substrates by alternating electrostatic adsorption of GO and PDDA. The formation and structure of the films were analyzed by means of water contact angle measurement, thickness measurement, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Meanwhile, tribological behaviors in micro- and macro- scale were investigated by AFM and a ball-on-plate tribometer, respectively. The results showed that (GO/PDDA) n multilayer films exhibited excellent friction-reducing and anti-wear abilities in both micro- and macro-scale, which was ascribed to the special structure in (GO/PDDA) n multilayer films, namely, a well-stacked GO–GO layered structure and an elastic 3D crystal stack in whole. Such a film structure is suitable for design molecular lubricants for MEMS and other microdevices.

Ultrastrong Hybrid Fibers with Tunable Macromolecular Interfaces of Graphene Oxide and Carbon Nanotube for Multifunctional Applications

Abstract:Wet spinning with CSA facilitates the dispersion of CNT and GO and the orientation and packing of fibers. The microstructures are controlled by the dimensions and content ratio of the components. Desirable structuring dramatically improves the mechanical properties by improving the alignment, reducing voids, and maximizing interfacial contact. Extraordinary flexibility, surface and electrochemical properties make them attractive for multifunctional applications. Individual carbon nanotubes (CNT) and graphene have unique mechanical and electrical properties; however, the properties of their macroscopic assemblies have not met expectations because of limited physical dimensions, the limited degree of dispersion of the components, and various structural defects. Here, a state‐of‐the‐art assembly for a novel type of hybrid fiber possessing the properties required for a wide variety of multifunctional applications is presented. A simple and effective multidimensional nanostructure of CNT and graphene oxide (GO) assembled by solution processing improves the interfacial utilization of the components. Flexible GOs are effectively intercalated between nanotubes along the shape of CNTs, which reduces voids, enhances orientation, and maximizes the contact between elements. The microstructure is finely controlled by the elements content ratio and dimensions, and an optimal balance improves the mechanical properties. The hybrid fibers simultaneously exhibit exceptional strength (6.05 GPa), modulus (422 GPa), toughness (76.8 J g–1), electrical conductivity (8.43 MS m–1), and knot strength efficiency (92%). Furthermore, surface and electrochemical properties are significantly improved by tuning the GO content, further expanding the scope of applications. These hybrid fibers are expected to offer a strategy for overcoming the limitations of existing fibers in meeting the requirements for applications in the fiber industry.
