Abstract:We study the formation of singularity for the isothermal Euler-Poisson system arising from plasma physics. Contrast to the previous studies yielding only limited information on the blow-up solutions, for instance, sufficient conditions for the blow-up and the temporal blow-up rate along the characteristic curve, we rather give a constructive proof of singularity formation from smooth initial data. More specifically, employing the stable blow-up profile of the Burgers equation in the self-similar variables, we establish the global stability estimate in the self-similar time, which yields the asymptotic behavior of blow-up solutions near the singularity point. Our analysis indicates that the smooth solution to the Euler-Poisson system can develop a cusp-type singularity; it exhibits $C^1$ blow-up in a finite time, while it belongs to $C^{1/3}$ at the blow-up time, provided that smooth initial data are sufficiently close to the blow-up profile in some weighted $C^4$-topology. We also present a similar result for the isentropic case, and discuss noteworthy differences in the analysis.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the formation and propagation of singularities for the system for one-dimensional Chaplygin gas. In particular, under suitable assumptions we construct a physical solution with a new type of singularities called "Delta-like" solution for this kind of quasilinear hyperbolic system with linearly degenerate characteristics. By careful analysis, we study the behavior of the solution in a neighborhood of a blowup point. The formation of this new kind of singularities is due to the envelope of the different families of characteristics instead of the same family of characteristics in the traditional situation. This shows that the blowup phenomenon of solution for the system with linearly degenerate characteristics is quite different from the situation of shock formation for the system with genuinely nonlinear characteristics. Different initial data can lead to kinds of different Delta-like singularities: the Delta-like singularity with point-shape and Delta-like singularity with line-shape.

Nonlinear stability of shock profiles to Burgers' equation with critical fast diffusion and singularity

Abstract:In this paper we propose the first framework to study Burgers' equation featuring critical fast diffusion in form of $u_t+f(u)_x = (\ln u)_{xx}$. The solution possesses a strong singularity when $u=0$ hence bringing technical challenges. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the asymptotic stability of viscous shocks, particularly those with shock profiles vanishing at the far field $x=+\infty$. To overcome the singularity, we introduce some weight functions and show the nonlinear stability of shock profiles through the weighted energy method. Numerical simulations are also carried out in different cases of fast diffusion with singularity, which illustrate and confirm our theoretical results.

Abstract:For a wide class of nonlinear parabolic equations of the formut−Δu=F(u,∇u), we prove the nonexistence of global solutions for large initial data. We also estimate the maximal existence time. To do so we use a method of comparison with suitable blowing up self-similar subsolutions. As a consequence, we improve several known results onut−Δu=up, on generalized Burgers' equations, and on other semilinear equations. This method can also apply to degenerate equations of porous medium type and provides a unified treatment for a large class of problems, both semilinear and quasilinear.

Viscous shock waves of Burgers equation with fast diffusion and singularity

Abstract:In this paper, we study the asymptotic stability of viscous shock waves for Burgers' equation with fast diffusion $u_t+f(u)_x=\mu (u^m)_{xx}$ on $\mathbb{R} \times (0, +\infty)$ when $0<m<1$. For the proposed constant states $u_->u_+=0$, the equation with fast diffusion $(u^m)_{xx}=m\left(\frac{u_x}{u^{1-m}}\right)_x$ processes a strong singularity at $u_+=0$, which causes the stability study to be challenging. We observe that, there exist two different types of viscous shocks, one is the non-degenerate shock satisfying Lax's entropy condition with fast algebraic decay to the singular state $u_+=0$, which causes much strong singularity to the system in the form of $m\left(\frac{u_x}{u^{1-m}}\right)_x$, and the other is the degenerate viscous shock with slow algebraic decay to $u_+=0$, which makes less strong singularity to the system. In order to overcome the singularity at $u_+=0$, we technically use the weighted energy method and develop a new strategy where the weights related to the shock waves are carefully selected, while the chosen weights for the non-degenerate case are stronger than the degenerate case. Numerical simulations are also carried out in different cases to illustrate and validate our theoretical results. In particular, we numerically approximate the solution for different value of $0<m<1$, and find that the shapes of shock waves become steeper when the singularity $\left(\frac{u_x}{u^{1-m}}\right)_x$ is stronger as $m\rightarrow 0$, which indicates that the effect of singular fast diffusion on the solution is essential.

Abstract:We consider a class of dispersive and dissipative perturbations of the inviscid Burgers equation, which includes the fractional KdV equation of order , and the fractal Burgers equation of order , where , and the Whitham equation. For all , we construct solutions whose gradient blows up at a point, and whose amplitude stays bounded, which therefore display a "shock-like" singularity. Moreover, we provide an asymptotic description of the blow-up. To the best of our knowledge, this constitutes the first proof of gradient blow-up for the fKdV equation in the range , as well as the first description of explicit blow-up dynamics for the fractal Burgers equation in the range . Our construction is based on modulation theory, where the well-known smooth self-similar solutions to the inviscid Burgers equation are used as profiles. A somewhat amusing point is that the profiles that are less stable under initial data perturbations (in that the number of unstable directions is larger) are more stable under perturbations of the equation (in that higher order dispersive and/or dissipative terms are allowed) due to their slower rates of concentration. Another innovation of this article, which may be of independent interest, is the development of a streamlined weighted -based approach (in lieu of the characteristic method) for establishing the sharp spatial behavior of the solution in self-similar variables, which leads to the sharp Hölder regularity of the solution up to the blow-up time.

Abstract:The nature of the shock wave, governed by Burgers equation, is presented from viewpoint of saddle-node bifurcations. First, the inviscid Burgers equation is studied in detail, and the solution of the system with a certain initial condition is obtained. The solution in vector form is reduced into a Map in order to investigate the stability and bifurcation in the system. It has been proved that there exists a thin spatial zone where a saddle-node bifurcation occurs as time goes on, and the velocity of the fluid behaves as jumping, namely, the characteristic of shock wave. Further, the period-doubling bifurcation is captured, that means there exist multiple states as time increases, and the complicated spatio-temporal pattern is formatted. In addition to above, the viscous Burgers equation is further studied to extend to dissipative systems. By traveling wave transformation, the governing equation is reduced into an ordinary differential equation. Then, the instability or bifurcation condition is obtained, and it is proved that there are three singular points in the system as the bifurcation condition is satisfied. More, the velocity distribution is obtained with a certain initial condition. The results show that the discontinuity resulting from saddle-node bifurcation is removed with the introduction of viscousity, and another kind of velocity change with strong gradient is obtained. However, the change of velocity is continuous with sharp slopes. As a conclusion, all results can provide a fundamental understanding of the nonlinear phenomena relevant to shock wave and other complicated nonlinear phenomena, from viewpoint of nonlinear dynamics.

Abstract:The author studies the 2D isentropic Euler equations with the ideal gas law. He exhibits a set of smooth initial data that give rise to shock formation at a single point near the planar symmetry. These solutions to the 2D isentropic Euler equations are associated with non-zero vorticity at the shock and have uniform-in-time -Hölder bound. Moreover, these point shocks are of self-similar type and share the same profile, which is a solution to the 2D self-similar Burgers equation. The proof of the solutions, following the 3D construction of Buckmaster, Shkoller and Vicol (in 2023), is based on the stable 2D self-similar Burgers profile and the modulation method.

Locating complex singularities of Burgers' equation using exponential asymptotics and transseries

Abstract:Burgers' equation is an important mathematical model used to study gas dynamics and traffic flow, among many other applications. Previous analysis of solutions to Burgers' equation shows an infinite stream of simple poles born at t = 0^+, emerging rapidly from the singularities of the initial condition, that drive the evolution of the solution for t > 0. We build on this work by applying exponential asymptotics and transseries methodology to an ordinary differential equation that governs the small-time behaviour in order to derive asymptotic descriptions of these poles and associated zeros. Our analysis reveals that subdominant exponentials appear in the solution across Stokes curves; these exponentials become the same size as the leading order terms in the asymptotic expansion along anti-Stokes curves, which is where the poles and zeros are located. In this region of the complex plane, we write a transseries approximation consisting of nested series expansions. By reversing the summation order in a process known as transasymptotic summation, we study the solution as the exponentials grow, and approximate the pole and zero location to any required asymptotic accuracy. We present the asymptotic methods in a systematic fashion that should be applicable to other nonlinear differential equations.

Abstract:We study a general class of focusing L-2-critical nonlinear Schrodinger equations with lower order perturbations, in the possible absence of the pseudo-conformal symmetry and the conservation law of energy. In dimensions one and two, we construct multi-bubble Bourgain-Wang type blow-up solutions, which behave like a sum of pseudo-conformal blow-up solutions that concentrate at K distinct singularities, 1 = K < 8, and a regular profile. Moreover, we obtain the uniqueness in the energy class where the convergence rate is within the order (T - t)(4+), for t close to the blow-up time T. These results in particular apply to the canonical nonlinear Schrodinger equations and, through the pseudo-conformal transform, yield the existence and conditional uniqueness of non-pure multi-solitons, which behave asymptotically as a sum of multi-solitons and a dispersive part. Thus, the results provide new examples of the mass quantization conjecture and the soliton resolution conjecture. Furthermore, through a Doss-Sussman type transform, we obtain multi-bubble Bourgain-Wang solutions for stochastic nonlinear Schrodinger equations, where the driving noise is taken in the sense of controlled rough path.
On the stability of Type I self-similar blowups for the Keller-Segel system in three dimensions and higher

Abstract:We consider the parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel system in spatial dimensions $d\geq3$, which corresponds to the mass supercritical case. Some solutions become singular in finite time, an important example being backward self-similar solutions. Herrero et al. and Brenner et al. showed the existence of such profiles, countably many in dimensions $3\leq d \leq 9$ and at least two for $d\geq 10$. We establish that all these self-similar profiles are stable along a set of initial data with finite Lipschitz codimension equal to the number of instable eigenmodes. This extends the recent finding of Glogić et al. showing the stability of the fundamental self-similar profile. We obtain additional results, such as the possibility of the solutions we construct to originate from smooth and compactly supported initial data, their convergence at blow-up time, and the Lipschitz regularity of the blow-up time. Our proof extends the approach proposed in Collot et al., based on renormalizing the solution around a modulated self-similar solution, and using a spectral gap for the linearized operator in the parabolic neighbourhood of the singularity.

Abstract:Variable separation solutions are constructed.The lump (not lump-type) solutions are derived.Interactions between the lump and N-solitons are investigated.Interactions between the lump and other traveling waves are discussed.All the resulting solutions can be generalized to (N+1)-dimensional Burgers equation.Finding exact and analytic solutions of nonlinear system in high dimensions is a difficult but meaningful work. In this paper, by means of the symbolic package Maple, we investigate a Painlevé integrable (3+1)-dimensional generalized Burgers (gBurgers) equation. Starting from the Cole-Hopf transformation with different seed solutions, abundant localized solutions are provided, including new variable separation solutions, lumps, lump-"multiple-soliton" solutions and other interaction solutions. Specifically, the lump-two soliton solution and lump-soliton-periodic solution are depicted by the three-dimensional plots and contour plots at different times, respectively. The methods and all the resulting solutions presented in this paper can be generalized to the Painlevé integrable (<span class="math"><math>N+1</math></span>)-dimensional Burgers equation.

Our proof strategy draws upon the modulation method in Krieger, Lenzmann and Raphael [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 209 (2013), no. 1, 61-129] for the single-bubble case, and explores the localization techniques in Cao, Su and Zhang [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 247 (2023), no. 1, Paper No. 4] and Rockner, Su and Zhang [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 377 (2024), no. 1, 517-588] for bubbling solutions to non-linear Schr & ouml;dinger equations (NLS). However, unlike the single-bubble or NLS cases, different bubbles exhibit the strongest interactions in dimension one. In order to get sharp estimates to control these interactions, as well as non-local effects on localization functions, we utilize the Carlderon estimate and the integration representation formula of the half-wave operator, and find that there exists a narrow room between the orders |t|(2+) and |t|(3-) for the remainder in the geometrical decomposition. Based on this, a novel bootstrap scheme is introduced to address the multi-bubble non-local structure.

Abundant lump waves are constructed by taking the ansatz as a rational function. Furthermore, mixed solutions utilizing lump waves, rogue waves, and kink solitons are obtained by combining the rational function with an exponential function, resulting in fission and fusion phenomena.

Abstract: For the first order 1D $n\times n$ quasilinear strictly hyperbolic system $\partial_tu+F(u)\partial_xu=0$ with $u(x, 0)=\varepsilon u_0(x)$, where $\varepsilon>0$ is small, $u_0(x)\not\equiv 0$ and $u_0(x)\in C_0^2(\mathbb R)$, when at least one eigenvalue of $F(u)$ is genuinely nonlinear, it is well-known that on the finite blowup time $T_{\varepsilon}$, the derivatives $\partial_{t,x}u$ blow up while the solution $u$ keeps to be small. For the 1D scalar equation or $2\times 2$ strictly hyperbolic system (corresponding to $n=1, 2$), if the smooth solution $u$ blows up in finite time, then the blowup mechanism can be well understood (i.e., only the blowup of $\partial_{t,x}u$ happens). In the present paper, for the $n\times n$ ($n\geq 3$) strictly hyperbolic system with a class of large initial data, we are concerned with the blowup mechanism of smooth solution $u$ on the finite blowup time and the detailed singularity behaviours of $\partial_{t,x}u$ near the blowup point. Our results are based on the efficient decomposition of $u$ along the different characteristic directions, the suitable introduction of the modulated coordinates and the global weighted energy estimates.

Abstract:We construct finite time blow-up solutions to the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation (LLG) from ${\mathbb R}^2$ into $S^2$ \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} u_t= a(\Delta u+|\nabla u|^2u) -b u\wedge \Delta u &\ \mbox{ in }\ {\mathbb R}^2\times(0,T), u(\cdot,0) = u_0\in S^2 &\ \mbox{ in }\ {\mathbb R}^2, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $a^2+b^2=1,~a > 0,~ b\in {\mathbb R}$. Given any prescribed $N$ points in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and small $T>0$, we prove that there exists regular initial data such that the solution blows up precisely at these points at finite time $t=T$, taking around each point the profile of sharply scaled degree 1 harmonic map with the type II blow-up speed \begin{equation*} \| \nabla u\|_{L^\infty } \sim \frac{|\ln(T-t)|^2}{ T-t } \ \mbox{ as } \ t\to T. \end{equation*} The proof is based on the {\em parabolic inner-outer gluing method}, developed in \cite{17HMF} for Harmonic Map Flow (HMF). However, a direct consequence of the presence of dispersion is the {\em lack of maximum principle} for suitable quantities, which makes the analysis more delicate even at the linearized level. To overcome this difficulty, we make use of two key technical ingredients: first, for the inner problem we employ the tool of {\em distorted Fourier transform}, as developed by Krieger, Miao, Schlag and Tataru \cite{Krieger09Duke,KMS20WM}. Second, the linear theory for the outer problem is achieved by means of the sub-Gaussian estimate for the fundamental solution of parabolic system in non-divergence form with coefficients of Dini mean oscillation in space ($\mathsf{DMO_x}$), which was proved by Dong, Kim and Lee \cite{dong22-non-divergence} recently.
