Abstract:We study the formation of singularity for the isothermal Euler-Poisson system arising from plasma physics. Contrast to the previous studies yielding only limited information on the blow-up solutions, for instance, sufficient conditions for the blow-up and the temporal blow-up rate along the characteristic curve, we rather give a constructive proof of singularity formation from smooth initial data. More specifically, employing the stable blow-up profile of the Burgers equation in the self-similar variables, we establish the global stability estimate in the self-similar time, which yields the asymptotic behavior of blow-up solutions near the singularity point. Our analysis indicates that the smooth solution to the Euler-Poisson system can develop a cusp-type singularity; it exhibits $C^1$ blow-up in a finite time, while it belongs to $C^{1/3}$ at the blow-up time, provided that smooth initial data are sufficiently close to the blow-up profile in some weighted $C^4$-topology. We also present a similar result for the isentropic case, and discuss noteworthy differences in the analysis.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the formation mechanism of singularities in the isothermal Euler - Poisson system. Specifically, the authors study how the system develops singularities in a finite time starting from smooth initial values, especially whether such singularities are cusp - type singularities. In previous studies, although it has been proven that under certain conditions the solution will leave the \(C^1\) class in a finite time, these studies provide limited detailed information about the formation of singularities, for example, only some sufficient conditions for the formation of \(C^1\) singularities and the singularity growth rate in time can be given. To gain a deeper understanding of the singularity structure, the authors adopt the self - similar blow - up profile of the Burgers equation and analyze the asymptotic behavior near the singularity point by establishing global stability estimates. Their results show that if the initial data is close enough to the blow - up profile of the Burgers equation (in a weighted \(C^4\) topology), then the smooth solution of the Euler - Poisson system will exhibit \(C^1\) blow - up in a finite time, but belongs to the \(C^{1/3}\) class at the blow - up time. This indicates that the solution forms a cusp - type singularity rather than a shock - type discontinuity. In addition, the author also discusses similar results in the isentropic case and points out the main differences in the analysis of the two cases. This research not only provides detailed geometric information on the formation of singularities but also obtains the time rate of the simultaneous blow - up of the gradient, which is a conclusion that could not be obtained by previous methods.
