Abstract:A Ni–nano-CaO sorption complex catalyst was modified with ZrO2 to improve its stability for use in hydrogen production from steam methane reforming (SMR). Nano-ZrO2 was introduced into a support containing nano-CaCO3 and Al2O3. The sorption complex catalyst, ZrO2–Ni–nano-CaO, was prepared by infusing Ni into the ZrO2–nano-CaO support, followed by calcination. The catalyst was evaluated with a bench-scale fixed bed reactor under the following reaction conditions: a temperature of 600°C, a steam–carbon mole ratio of 4:1, a gas hourly space velocity of 1800h−1, and a regeneration temperature of 800°C. The reaction was performed under an atmosphere of nitrogen. The ZrO2-modified sorption complex catalyst could achieve 20 cyclic runs of ReSER hydrogen production, while the sorption complex catalyst without the ZrO2 modification rapidly deactivated after three cyclic runs. Brunauer–Emmer–Teller analysis showed that the catalyst surface area of the new catalyst had increased. Furthermore, the addition of ZrO2 could prevent the formation of NiAl2O4 in the sorption complex catalyst, which we believe to be the main cause of the improvement in the catalyst stability.

Abstract:There are many advantages for hydrogen production from the catalytic methane steam reforming reaction (MSR) using low water to methane ratios. However, conventional Ni based catalysts suffer from severe carbon deposition under these conditions. A typical supported Ni catalyst at water to methane ratios <1 at 800°C shows rapid deactivation (within few hours). Incorporation of CeO2 is known to offer a kinetic resistance to carbon deposition for many hydrocarbon oxidation reactions because of its facilitated redox activity. As a result, a study of blending ceria into a supported Ni catalyst by a number of deposition methods has been carried out. Catalyst characterization including DRIFTS, XRD, TPR, TGA, TEM and EDX suggests the prime importance of an intimate contact between Ni and CeO2 in reducing the extent of carbon deposition during the reforming reaction, which critically depends on the preparation method in catalyst synthesis. As a result, a stable and high level of hydrogen production with no significant carbon deposition for over 110h is demonstrated over the same Ni commercial catalyst pre-coated with ceria using a sol–gel method, which offers the best interface for the reaction.

Abstract:Methane steam reforming (MSR) plays a key role in the production of syngas and hydrogen from natural gas. The increasing interest in the use of hydrogen for fuel cell applications demands development of catalysts with high activity at reduced operating temperatures. Ni-based catalysts are promising systems because of their high activity and low cost, but coke formation generally poses a severe problem. Studies of ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS) indicate that CH4/H2O gas mixtures react with Ni/CeO2(111) surfaces to form OH, CH x , and CH x O at 300 K. All of these species are easy to form and desorb at temperatures below 700 K when the rate of the MSR process is accelerated. Density functional theory (DFT) modeling of the reaction over ceria-supported small Ni nanoparticles predicts relatively low activation barriers between 0.3 and 0.7 eV for complete dehydrogenation of methane to carbon and the barrierless activation of water at interfacial Ni sites. Hydroxyls resulting from water activation allow for CO formation via a COH intermediate with a barrier of about 0.9 eV, which is much lower than that through a pathway involving lattice oxygen from ceria. Neither methane nor water activation is a rate-determining step, and the OH-assisted CO formation through the COH intermediate constitutes a low-barrier pathway that prevents carbon accumulation. The interactions between Ni and the ceria support and the low metal loading are crucial for the reaction to proceed in a coke-free and efficient way. These results pave the way for further advances in the design of stable and highly active Ni-based catalysts for hydrogen production.

Abstract:Nickel-ceria has been reported as a very good catalysts for the reforming of methane. Here, the methanol steam reforming reaction on both powder (Ni-CeO2) and model (Ni-CeO2-x(111)) catalysts was investigated. The active phase evolution and surface species transformation on powder catalysts were studied via in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and diffuse reflectance infrared transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). Phase transitions of NiO → NiC → Ni and CeO2 → CeO2-x were observed during the reaction. The simultaneous production of H2/CO2 demonstrates that the active phase of the catalysts contains metallic Ni supported over partially reduced ceria. The DRIFTS experiments indicate that a methoxy to formate transition is associated with the reduction of ceria whereas the formation of carbonate species results from the presence of metallic Ni. A study of the reaction of methanol with Ni-CeO2-x(111) by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) points to the essential role of metal-support interactions in an oxygen transfer from ceria to Ni that contributes to the high selectivity of the catalysts.

Abstract:Inhibiting the aggregation of Ni particles and coke deposition on supported nickel catalysts has always been an enormous challenge in methane reforming to syngas. To address the problem, in this study, a Ce-Al-O supported Ni mesoporous catalyst (Ni/Ce-Al-O-A) was designed and synthesized by using evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) method and citric acid auto-reduction (AR) method, respectively. The prepared Ni/Ce-Al-O-A catalyst, without further reduction, was used for combined methane dry reforming comprising CO2 dry reforming of methane (DRM) and methane partial oxidation (MPO) to effectively produce syngas. Employing citric acid auto-reduction method for catalyst preparation directly led to the formation of metallic Ni by calcining the precursor of Ni/Ce-Al-O-A in argon atmosphere, with high dispersion and small particle size (at around 4.5 nm) of metallic Ni being obtained. The Ni/Ce-Al-O-A catalyst presented high catalytic activity, better than those of reference catalyst prepared by general impregnation method and the commercial alumina supported Ni catalyst synthesized by citric acid auto-reduction method. In a 250 h lifetime test, the Ni/Ce-Al-O-A catalyst exhibited an extremely catalytic stability and anti-coking ability, and no deactivation was observed. The excellent catalytic activity of Ni/Ce-Al-O-A catalyst was mainly attributed to the Ce-incorporated Ce-Al-O that facilitated the adsorption and activation of CO2 as well as the combined methane reforming (DRM-MPO) in which the existing oxygen could effectively inhibit the coke formation.

Abstract:Methane reforming with carbon dioxide (DRM) is one promising way to achieve carbon neutrality and convert methane to syngas for high-value chemical production. Catalyst development with better performance is the key to its potential large-scale industrial application due to its deactivation caused by carbon deposition and metal sintering. Hence, a Ni/CeO2 catalyst (Ni/CeO2-M) with higher CO2 conversion and better stability is prepared, supported on CeO2 precipitated via a novel microimpinging stream reactor. A series of ex-situ or in-situ characterizations, such as CO titration measurements, two-step transient surface reaction (two-step TSR), CO2 and CH4 temperature-programmed surface reaction (CO2-TPSR and CH4-TPSR), X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS), and in-situ Raman spectroscopy study, were used to investigate its structure and mechanism. In contrast to Ni supported on commercial CeO2 (Ni/CeO2-C), the Ni/CeO2-M catalyst with stronger lattice oxygen mobility and higher oxygen storage capacity enhances its CO2 activation ability and carbon deposition. The Ni particle size of the Ni/CeO2-M catalyst decreased, and a higher oxidation state was obtained due to the strong metal–support interaction. Besides the reaction performance improvement of the Ni/CeO2-M catalyst, the novel microimpinging stream reactor could achieve catalyst continuous production with a high preparation efficiency. This work provides a novel method for the high-performance catalyst preparation for DRM reaction and its mechanism study gives a deep insight into high-performance catalyst development via bottom-up study.

Abstract:Ni-Fe nanocatalysts supported on CeO2 have been prepared for the catalysis of methane steam reforming (MSR) aiming for coke-resistant noble metal-free catalysts. The catalysts have been synthesized by traditional incipient wetness impregnation as well as dry ball milling, a green and more sustainable preparation method. The impact of the synthesis method on the catalytic performance and the catalysts' nanostructure has been investigated. The influence of Fe addition has been addressed as well. The reducibility and the electronic and crystalline structure of Ni and Ni-Fe mono- and bimetallic catalysts have been characterized by temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR), in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy. Their catalytic activity was tested between 700 and 950 °C at 108 L gcat-1 h-1 and with the reactant flow varying between 54 and 415 L gcat-1 h-1 at 700 °C. Hydrogen production rates of 67 mol gmet-1 h-1 have been achieved. The performance of the ball-milled Fe0.1Ni0.9/CeO2 catalyst was similar to that of Ni/CeO2 at high temperatures, but Raman spectroscopy revealed a higher amount of highly defective carbon on the surface of Ni-Fe nanocatalysts. The reorganization of the surface under MSR of the ball-milled NiFe/CeO2 has been monitored by in situ near-ambient pressure XPS experiments, where a strong reorganization of the Ni-Fe nanoparticles with segregation of Fe toward the surface has been observed. Despite the catalytic activity being lower in the low-temperature regime, Fe addition for the milled nanocatalyst increased the coke resistance and could be an efficient alternative to industrial Ni/Al2O3 catalysts.

Abstract:Methane reforming with carbon dioxide provides an environmentally friendly route for converting methane to synthesis gas while consuming two greenhouse gases. Large-scale implementation of this process has been stalled by the lack of stable catalysts owing to the rapid deactivation caused by carbon deposition and sintering. Ni/Ce0.9Eu0.1O1.95 catalysts with better activity and enhanced stability are synthesized for dry reforming of methane. This reaction is believed to occur via the direct C-H bond dissociation of CH4 to form surface carbon intermediates on metal sites followed by the oxidation of carbon intermediates to CO. Compared with CeO2, Ce0.9Eu0.1O1.95 with stronger lattice oxygen mobility and higher oxygen storage capacity generates more mobile active oxygen species that participate in eliminating the carbon deposition. Moreover, the particle size of Ni species decreases and Ni shifts to higher oxidation state as a result of the strong metal-support interaction over Ce0.9Eu0.1O1.95. The more surface oxygen species are involved in the reaction, the more methane can be converted to CO rather than surface carbon. As a consequence, the balance between the rate of carbon generation (i.e., the direct C-H bond dissociation of CH4) and the rate of carbon consumption (i.e., the oxidation of formed carbon intermediates) can be achieved for dry reforming of methane over Ni/Ce0.9Eu0.1O1.95, leading to less coke accumulation and thereafter an improved overall catalytic performance.

Abstract:Steam methane reforming (SMR) is the most mature technology for hydrogen production in industry, and alumina supported nickel (Ni/Al2O3) is the most widely used catalyst. Herein, the key role of Ni valence state on the catalytic SMR performance of Ni/Al2O3 is reported. The ratio of Ni-0/Ni2+ on Ni/Al2O3 is individually and effectively tuned by changing the reduction temperature after wet impregnation. Catalytic performance of Ni/Al2O3 is greatly dependent on the surface concentration of Ni-0 and Ni2+. The catalyst reduced at 675 degrees C possesses balanced Ni-0 and Ni2+ sites and exhibits superior catalytic performance, on which 60 % of methane is stably converted at 600 degrees C. CH4-TPD and CO-TPD profiles demonstrate that appropriate Ni-0/Ni2+ ratio can promote the adsorption of CH4 and inhibit the moderate-strength adsorption of CO, which leads to increased SMR activity and selectivity.
Oxidative Steam Reforming of Methanol over Cu-Based Catalysts

Abstract:Several Cu and Ni-based catalysts were synthetized over Ce-based supports, either pure or mixed with different amounts of alumina (1:2 and 1:3 mol/mol). Different metal loadings (10–40 wt%) and preparation methods (wet impregnation, co-precipitation, and flame-spray pyrolysis—FSP) were compared for the oxidative steam reforming of methanol. Characterization of the catalysts has been performed, e.g., through XRD, BET, XPS, TPR, SEM, and EDX analyses. All the catalysts have been tested in a bench-scale continuous setup. The hydrogen yield and methanol conversion obtained have been correlated with the operating conditions, metal content, crystallinity of the catalyst particles, total surface area, and with the interaction of the metal with the support. A Cu loading of 20% wt/wt was optimal, while the presence of alumina was not beneficial, decreasing catalyst activity at low temperatures compared with catalysts supported on pure CeO2. Ni-based catalysts were a possible alternative, but the activity towards the methanation reaction at relatively high temperatures decreased inevitably the hydrogen yield. Durability and deactivation tests showed that the best-performing catalyst, 20% wt. Cu/CeO2 prepared through coprecipitation was stable for a long period of time. Full methanol conversion was achieved at 280 °C, and the highest yield of H2 was ca. 80% at 340 °C, higher than the literature data.

Abstract:Dry reforming of methane (DRM) can convert the greenhouse gases to more valuable and easy separated syngas, which is of industrial and environmental importance. However, the reaction suffers from catalyst deactivation arising from the carbon deposition. Herein, we developed a perovskite PrCrO3-δ-supported nickel catalyst with high conversion rates of CH4 (∼89 %) and CO2 (∼88 %), as well as excellent stability (>110 h) by a few Ce doping. The results demonstrated that surface oxygen vacancies played a crucial role in coking resistance. The prepared Ni@Pr1-xCexCrO3 has proven effective in converting the carbon rapidly into CO to suppress carbon deposition, improving the stability of the catalyst. This strategy provides a potential solution for the efficient conversion of the low calorific value fuels.

Robust and Coke-free Ni Catalyst Stabilized by 1–2 nm-Thick Multielement Oxide for Methane Dry Reforming

Abstract:Methane dry reforming, co-converting greenhouse gases CH4 and CO2 into chemically active syngas (H2/CO), affords a promising route for producing chemicals and fuels from carbon resources. Ni catalysts are the most active for this reaction but suffer from the dilemma of rapid deactivation caused by metal sintering at higher temperatures (>973 K) or coke accumulation at relatively lower temperatures (673–973 K). Here, we report a catalyst configuration—Ni particles (15 nm) confined by a 1–2 nm-thick multielement-oxide (MEO) layer—allows a stable operation at 873–1073 K with a stoichiometric CH4/CO2 ratio of 1.0, that is, the severe conditions for catalyst deactivation but of industrial interest for process efficiency and atomic economy. The in situ-evolved MEO layer resembles the property of high-entropy oxide, which stabilizes the Ni particles with appropriate size and high-index facets, even at 1173 K. Meanwhile, in situ TEM under near atmospheric pressure combining intelligent gravity analysis (IGA)-mass spectrometry (MS) characterizations prove that this unique structure balanced the activation of CH4 and CO2. Thus, the lifetime of the catalyst has been efficiently prolonged with nearly coke-free operations, even at 873 K, the most severe coking temperature. Oxygen Vacancy Induced Strong Metal-Support Interactions on Ni/Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 Nanorod Catalysts for Promoting Steam Reforming of Toluene: Experimental and Computational Studies.

Abstract:To develop an efficient Ni-based steam reforming catalyst for tar removal from the products of biomass gasification, Ni/Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 nanorods were designed. The Ni/Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 nanorod was used as a catalyst in steam reforming of toluene, which was regarded as a model compound of biomass gasification tar. At gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 24,000 h-1 and Ni loading of 5 wt %, the 5Ni/Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 nanorod catalyst achieved 100% of toluene conversion at 600 °C. After 10 h of operation, toluene conversion still reached 87.6%, and the carbon deposition rate was only 1.9 mg/gcat h-1. The experimental results demonstrated that the 5Ni/Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 nanorod catalyst showed much higher catalytic activity and coking resistance than other Ni-based catalysts reported in the literature. Through different characterization technologies and density functional theory calculations, it was confirmed that the excellent catalytic performance was attributed to the strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) between Ni and the {100} facet of Ce0.8Zr0.2O2. The special surface structure of {100} allowed Ni atoms to anchor to the surface oxygen vacancies and maintained its reduced state by electron transport between surface atoms. The anchored Ni facilitated oxygen vacancies formation and H2O dissociation on the support, while the support modulated the electronic structure of Ni, which promoted its ability to toluene activation.

Abstract:Catalytic steam reforming of long-chain hydrocarbons has drawn great attention for hydrogen production, which can be used for on-board/on-site fuel cell. In this study, a series of SBA15 supported Ni-Co bi-metal catalysts with different ceria loadings (denoted as NC-xCeO(2)/SBA-15) have been prepared via a facile ethylene-glycol route. Various techniques including XRD, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, H-2-TPR/O-2-TPO, TPH, TEM/SEM, TG/DTG and Raman spectra were employed to characterize the fresh and spent catalysts. Steam reforming of n-dodecane has been carried out to evaluate catalytic perform-ance of the obtained catalysts at high LHSV (24 ml/g(cat).h) and atmospheric pressure in a fixed-bed tubular reactor using the H2O/C ratio of 4. The catalyst with 6wt% CeO2 (NC-6CeO(2)/SBA15) exhibits the best activity and stability. The improvement of performance for n-dodecane steam reforming is ascribed to the strong interaction between metal and ceria, which would control metal growth and prevent metal sintering. Lamellar cross-linking Ni/CeO 2 as an efficient and durable catalyst for dry reforming of methane

Abstract:Dry reforming of methane provides a prospective process for converting greenhouse gases into syngas but suffers from the coking and sintering of catalyst at high operating temperatures. Here we report a lamellar cross-linking Ni/CeO 2 catalyst that shows durable performance with 73 % CO 2 and 60 % CH 4 conversions for DRM at 700 °C in a continuous operation of 50 h. The sintering of Ni particles is inhibited due to the confined migration and aggregation of Ni nanoparticles provided by the lamellar CeO 2 nanosheets. Meanwhile, the presence of these CeO 2 nanosheets facilitates the release of lattice oxygen and the formation of oxygen vacancies, thereby generating more reactive oxygen species, as revealed by the characterization of Raman, XPS, H 2 -TPR and O 2 -TPD. The catalyst characterization using TGA and N 2 -TP indicates that the reactive oxygen species can realize the in-situ gasification of carbon deposition, thus achieving a balance between the rate of coke formation and carbon gasification. Due to the dynamic balance of carbon deposits, no further accumulation of carbon deposition is observed during the DRM test from 10 h to 50 h.

Abstract:The sol–gel template technique makes it possible to synthesize a stable and efficient nickel catalyst based on magnesium-modified cerium oxide Ce0.5Mg0.5O1.5 for the combined steam and CO2 reforming of methane. To stabilize dispersed forms of the active component in the matrix of the support, the catalysts were synthesized by changing the support precursor (cerium acetate and chloride), the active component composition (Ni, NiPd) and the method of introducing nanoparticles. The relationship was established between the physicochemical and catalytic characteristics of the samples. The use of cerium acetate as a support precursor provided smaller pore and crystallite sizes of the support, a stabilization of the dispersed forms of the active component, and excellent catalytic characteristics. The introduction of Pd into the Ni nanoparticles (Pd/Ni = 0.03) increased the resistance of the active component to sintering during the reaction, ensuring stable operation for 25 h of operation. The increased stability was due to a higher concentration of defective oxygen, a higher dispersion of bimetallic NiPd nanoparticles, and the Ni clusters strongly interacting with the NiO-MgO solid solution. An efficient and stable Ni0.194Pd0.006Ce0.4Mg0.4O1.4 catalyst for the conversion of CO2 into important chemicals was developed. With the optimal composition and synthesis conditions of the catalyst, the yield of the target products was more than 75%.

Abstract:A series of nickel-based catalyst supported on silica (Ni/SiO2) with different loading of Ce/Ni (molar ratio ranging from 0.17 to 0.84) were prepared using conventional co-impregnation method and were applied to synthesis gas production in the combination of CO2 reforming with partial oxidation of methane. Among the cerium-containing catalysts, the cerium-rich ones exhibited the higher activity and stability than the cerium-low ones. The temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS) analysis revealed that the addition of CeO2 reduced the chemical interaction between Ni and support, resulting in an increase in reducibility and dispersion of Ni. Over NiCe-x/SiO2 (x = 0.17, 0.50, 0.67, 0.84) catalysts, the reduction peak in TPR profiles shifted to the higher temperature with increasing Ce/Ni molar ratio, which was attributed to the smaller metallic nickel size of the reduced catalysts. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) for the post-reaction catalysts confirmed that the promoter retained the metallic nickel species and prevented the metal particle growth at high reaction temperature. The NiCe-0.84/SiO2 catalyst with small Ni particle size exhibited the stable activity with the constant H-2/CO molar ratio of 1.2 during 6-h reaction in the combination of CO2 reforming with partial oxidation of methane at 850 degrees C and atmospheric pressure. Abstract:Three Ni-based catalysts, namely Ni/ZrO2/Al2O3, Ni/La–Ca/Al2O3 and Ni0.5Mg2.5AlO9 catalysts were prepared, tested and characterized for steam reforming of methane (SRM), especially at high space velocities. Experimental results demonstrated that Ni0.5Mg2.5AlO9 catalysts showed excellent catalytic activity, e.g., the high reaction performance (i.e., activity and stability) at a very short residence time of 20ms. For the accompanied water gas shift (WGS) reaction with the SRM at the steam to methane ratio of 3:1, the overall hydrogen yield depended on both the CH4 conversion and the CO2 selectivity. The results showed that CO2 selectivity had opposite trend compared with CH4 conversion in such a short-contact process. Catalyst characterizations by XRD, SEM-EDS, TEM and TGA suggested that the good performance of nickel catalysts was closely related with the good dispersion of the active component. The nano-sized nickel particles in strong interaction with the supports would lead to the good dispersion, thereafter having a slight tendency to sintering, and then to coking.
