Abstract:Vanadium-based materials have been extensively studied as promising cathode materials for zinc-ion batteries because of their multiple valences and adjustable ion-diffusion channels. However, the sluggish kinetics of Zn-ion intercalation and less stable layered structure remain bottlenecks that limit their further development. The present work introduces potassium ions to partially substitute ammonium ions in ammonium vanadate, leading to a subtle shrinkage of lattice distance and the increased oxygen vacancies. The resulting potassium ammonium vanadate exhibits a high discharge capacity (464 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1) and excellent cycling stability (90% retention over 3000 cycles at 5 A g-1). The excellent electrochemical properties and battery performances are attributed to the rich oxygen vacancies. The introduction of K+ to partially replace NH4+ appears to alleviate the irreversible deammoniation to prevent structural collapse during ion insertion/extraction. Density functional theory calculations show that potassium ammonium vanadate has a modulated electron structure and a better zinc-ion diffusion path with a lower migration barrier.

Abstract:Ammonium‐ion batteries, leveraging non‐metallic ammonium ions, have arisen as a promising electrochemical energy storage system; however, their advancement has been hindered by the scarcity of high‐performance ammonium‐ion storage materials. In this study, w e propose an electrochemical phase transformation approach for the in‐situ synthesis of layered VOPO4·2H2O (E‐VOPO) with predominant growth on the (200) plane, corresponding to the tetragonal channels on (001) layers. O ur findings reveal that these tetragonal in‐layer channels not only furnish NH4+ storage sites but also enhance transfer kinetics by providing rapid cross‐layer migration pathways. This crucial aspect has been largely overlooked in previous studies. The E‐VOPO electrode exhibits exceptional ammonium‐ion storage performance, including significantly increased specific capacity, enhanced rate capability, and robust cycling stability. The resulting full cell can be stably operated for 12500 charge‐discharge cycles at 2 A g−1 for over 70 days. The proposed approach offers a new strategy for meticulously engineering electrode materials with facilitated ion storage and migration, thereby paving the way for developing more efficient and sustainable energy storage systems. Abstract:Aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) have received extensive attention and study owing to environmental pro-tection and intrinsic safety, in which ammonium vanadate (NH4V4O10) with possessing stable bi-layered struc-ture and high theoretical quality capacity is regarded as a potential cathode material. Nevertheless, the excessive ammonium ions located in the interlayer largely limit the Zn2+ diffusion efficiency. Herein, acid treatment was employed to remove part of ammonium ions from the interlayer of NH4V4O10 to prepared NH4+-deficient ammonium vanadate (NVO2), which can enlarge the interlayer distance and enhance the Zn2+ diffusion efficient. The experimental result demonstrates that the NVO2 electrode exhibits a high specific capacity of 472.5 mAh/g at 0.1 A/g and excellent rate performance of 195.5 mAh/g with current density increasing 100 times. Subse-quently, some ex-situ characterization methods were utilized to analyze the Zn2+ storage mechanism in NVO2. In addition, flexible NVO2/CNT membrane electrode was prepared by vacuum filtration and further assemble the quasi-solid-state flexible zinc ion batteries with employing polyacrylamide hydrogel, which exhibits a favorable electrochemical performance and mechanical stability as well, revealing its huge application prospect for flexible electronics.

Abstract:This study explores the enhancement of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) using ammonium-enhanced vanadium oxide cathodes. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations reveal that NH4+ incorporation into V6O16 lattices significantly facilitates Zn2+ ion diffusion by reducing electrostatic interactions, acting as a structural lubricant. Subsequent experimental validation using (NH4)2V6O16 cathodes synthesized via a hydrothermal method corroborates the DFT findings, demonstrating remarkable electrochemical stability with a capacity retention of 90% after 2000 cycles at 5 A g−1. These results underscore the potential of NH4+ in improving the performance and longevity of AZIBs, providing a pathway for sustainable energy storage solutions.

Abstract:Layered manganese dioxide is a promising cathode candidate for aqueous Zn-ion batteries. However, the narrow interlayer spacing, inferior intrinsic electronic conductivity and poor structural stability still limit its practical application. Herein, we report a two-step strategy to incorporate ammonium ions into manganese dioxide (named as AMO) nanosheets as a cathode for boosted Zn ion storage. K+ -intercalated δ-MnO2 nanosheets (KMO) grown on carbon cloth are chosen as the self-involved precursor. Of note, ammonium ions could replace K+ ions via a facile hydrothermal reaction to enlarge the lattice space and form hydrogen-bond networks. Compared with KMO, the structural stability and the ion transfer kinetics of the layered AMO are enhanced. As expected, the obtained AMO cathode exhibits remarkable electrochemical properties in terms of high reversible capacity, decent rate performance and superior cycling stability over 10000 cycles.

Abstract:Aqueous rechargeable batteries hold the potential for the application in large-scale energy storage system due to low cost, environmentally friendliness, and high safety. In the past several decades, tremendous research efforts have been devoted to the batteries with metal ions as charge carriers. However, little attention is paid to the non-metal charge carriers, such as ammonium ions. In this work, layered iron vanadate nanosheets are first introduced as ammonium ion storage electrode. In comparison with the Na+ and K + storage performance, iron vanadate nanosheets show a much improved pseudocapacitance behavior with NH4 + as charge carriers. In this way, at the high current density of 5 A/g, the FVO nanosheets in aqueous (NH4)2SO4 electrolyte display the highest specific capacity of 72.5 mAh/g for 500 cycles, compared with the FVO nanosheets in Na2SO4 (64.7 mAh/g) and K2SO4 (17.3 mAh/g). The difference is attributed to the dirctional H-bondings between the intercalated NH4 + ions and the host iron vanadate nanosheets. This work provides a new direction to expand aqueous batteries with ammonium ion as charger carriers.

Abstract:Ammonium vanadate (NVO) is regarded as one of the most promising cathodes for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) by virtue of its favorable theoretical capacity and comparatively stable layered structure. Nevertheless, the crowded NH4+ cation in the interlayer would partially occupy the transfer routes of Zn2+, and the strong electrostatic interaction contributed by the excessive NH4+ would further lower the mobility of Zn2+, thus resulting in the sluggish kinetics of Zn2+ and inferior rate performances. Herein, cation-modulated engineering is proposed and achieved via a facile thermal-treatment process. By modulating the number of NH4+ cations, the interlayer spacing of NH4V3O8 is significantly broadened and the migration barrier of Zn2+ is effectively reduced. As a result, the proposed NH4V3O8 cathode with moderate NH4+ removal exhibits the favorable capacity of 375 mAh g(-1) at 2 A g(-1), while similar to 363 mAh g(-1) could be maintained after 1000 cycles, corresponding to a superior capacity retention of similar to 97%, suggesting the significantly boosted electrochemical properties contributed by the cation-modulated engineering. Moreover, the related ex-situ characterizations substantiate the Zn2+/H2O co-intercalation mechanism of the proposed NVO cathode. This work sheds light on the potential of the cation-modulation strategy on accelerating the kinetics of zinc-ions and improving the electrochemical properties of ammonium vanadate-based cathodes and further broadens the application potentials of vanadium-based cathodes in rechargeable AZIBs.

Abstract:The cathode material plays a crucial role in the performances of aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (ZIBs). Herein, we report an ammonium vanadate (NH4V4O10∙0.28H2O, NHVO) aqueous ZIB cathode material. The obtained NHVO microflowers manifest high discharge capacity (410 mAh g‐1 at 0.2 A g‐1), long‐term durability (76 % capacity retention over 500 cycles) as well as ideal rate performance (112 mAh g‐1 at 10 A g‐1). The impressive electrochemical performance can be attributed to the ammonium ion and crystal water co‐assisted Zn2+ intercalation/de‐intercalation, which has been demonstrated by various ex‐situ and in‐situ characterizations. 3D Orbital Electron Tunning and Crystal Engineering Enables High-Capacity Vanadium Oxide for Aqueous Ammonium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) has shown great potential as the electrode for aqueous ammonium ion batteries (AAIBs) owing to its good electrochemical reversibility and high theoretical capacity. However, the electrochemical performance of V2O5 is seriously limited by the weak NH4+ adsorption capability and insufficient active sites of vanadium oxide originated from the unsuitable 3d orbital electron state. Herein, the strategy of a 3d orbital electron tunning and crystal engineering is used to increase the ammonium ion storage capacity of V2O5 electrode. The experimental results show that the modified 3d orbital state of V4+ (t2g1) can effectively increase the active sites of V2O5. Therefore, the as-prepared N-VO exhibits a high specific capacity of 249.3 mA h g−1 at 1.0 A g−1 and 69.5 mA h g−1 at 10.0 A g−1, superior to other reported anode material for AAIBs. Noticeably, the prepared resultant quasi-solid-state ammonium ion battery can display considerable cycling stability with capacity retention of 87.9% after a long cycle life of 10 000 cycles at 1 A g−1 and impressive mechanical flexibility with no capacity decay after cycling at different bending angles.
Quantitative Regulation of Interlayer Space of NH4V4O10 for Fast and Durable Zn2+ and NH4+ Storage

Abstract:Abstract Layered vanadium‐based oxides are the promising cathode materials for aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (AZIBs). Herein, an in situ electrochemical strategy that can effectively regulate the interlayer distance of layered NH4V4O10 quantitatively is proposed and a close relationship between the optimal performances with interlayer space is revealed. Specifically, via increasing the cutoff voltage from 1.4, 1.6 to 1.8 V, the interlayer space of NH4V4O10 can be well‐controlled and enlarged to 10.21, 11.86, and 12.08 Å, respectively, much larger than the pristine one (9.5 Å). Among them, the cathode being charging to 1.6 V (NH4V4O10‐C1.6), demonstrates the best Zn2+ storage performances including high capacity of 223 mA h g−1 at 10 A g−1 and long‐term stability with capacity retention of 97.5% over 1000 cycles. Such superior performances can be attributed to a good balance among active redox sites, charge transfer kinetics, and crystal structure stability, enabled by careful control of the interlayer space. Moreover, NH4V4O10‐C1.6 delivers NH4+ storage performances whose capacity reaches 296 mA h g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 and lifespan lasts over 3000 cycles at 5 A g−1. This study provides new insights into understand the limitation of interlayer space for ion storage in aqueous media and guides exploration of high‐performance cathode materials.

Abstract:It is accepted that the performance of batteries is dominated by the properties of their electrode materials. However, this maxim is built from the practice that the majority of research efforts have been directed toward batteries that use metal ions as the charge carriers. Herein, we show that the use of NH4+ results in battery performance governed by the chemical nature of the ion-electrode interaction. Specifically, we show that H bonding between NH4+ and a bi-layered V2O5 electrode is coupled with prominent pseudocapacitive behavior. The importance of the H bonding is demonstrated by comparing the storage of NH4+ in V2O5 with storage of K+. In addition to having a higher capacity and longer life of 30,000 cycles, NH4+ storage is overwhelmingly more pseudocapacitive than the K+ storage. Furthermore, first-principle calculations reveal an intriguing ion rotation-diffusion mechanism of NH4+ inside the V2O5 structure, akin to swinging on monkey bars.
High Performance of Co-Doped V2o5 Cathode Material for Ammonium Ion Battery

Abstract:Aqueous ammonium-ion batteries have the advantages of abundant resources, eco-friendliness, and fast diffusion, which have been reported in recent years. Vanadium pentoxide (V 2 O 5 ) with layered frame is a good electrode material. In this work, in order to improve the slow ionic diffusion kinetics and low conductivity of V 2 O 5 , a Co-doped V 2 O 5 cathode with good reversibility, cyclic stability and rate performance was prepared by hydrothermal method, and the saturated V 2 O 5 (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 solution was used as the electrolyte of ammonium ion battery. In pure V 2 O 5 and V 2 O 5 samples with different cobalt doping levels, V 2 O 5 -2Co samples with 2% cobalt doping showed a maximum capacity of 172mAh g -1 and coulombic efficiency of 61.6% after 500 cycles at current density of 1.0A g -1 , indicating good cyclic reversibility. According to the effective mass of the two electrodes, the high energy density is ~152Wh kg -1 , and it has a good cycle life in 1000 cycles, and the capacity retention rate is 49.2%. Based on these results, it is expected that Co-doped V 2 O 5 nanoparticles may help enhance electronic conductivity and provide an effective way for rapid electron transfer.
Electrochemical Storage of Ammonium Versus Metal Ions in Bimetallic Hydroxide for Sustainable Aqueous Batteries

Abstract:Electrochemical performances of a bimetallic hydroxide are systematically studied with different charge carriers in aqueous electrolytes, including nonmetal NH4+, and conventional K+ and Na+ ions. NH4+ exhibits stronger adsorption on the electrode surface and a lower solid‐state diffusion barrier in the electrode, leading to a higher discharge plateau and faster electrode reaction kinetics. Aqueous batteries with high safety and cost efficiency usually employ metallic cations as charge carriers. Recently, ammonium (NH4+) ion batteries using the nonmetal NH4+ as a charge carrier exhibit distinct electrochemical features from conventional aqueous batteries. Herein, the electrochemical performances of a bimetallic hydroxide material are systematically studied with different charge carriers in the electrolytes, including NH4+, as well as the conventional monovalent metallic cations K+ and Na+, respectively. Electrochemical results indicate that the charge storage process using NH4+ as the working ions exhibits a higher discharge plateau, smaller electrochemical polarization, and larger discharge capacity than that using conventional metallic charge carriers. Experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations suggest that the strong interaction between NH4+ and the electrode material, as well as the low NH4+‐ion diffusion barrier lead to these superior electrochemical features. The assembled NH4+‐ion battery exhibits a good energy density of 123 Wh kg(cathode+anode)−1 at the power density of 480 W kg(cathode+anode)−1. These fundamental findings are important for developing good safety, low‐cost, and high‐energy aqueous batteries with sustainable NH4+ charge carriers.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) have garnered ongoing scientific and technological interest for safe and eco-friendly energy storage. However, one of the critical challenges is to explore advanced cathode materials for stable and robust zinc ion diffusion. Herein, we demonstrate a simple hydrothermal method to synthesis a new model cathode material of (NH4)2V7O16•3.6H2O. A systematic experimental and theoretical work is carried out to uncover the advantages of ammonium insertion in V7O16 layers. Specifically, the ZIB delivers a reversible capacity of 465 and 214 mAh g−1 at current densities of 0.1 and 5.0 A g−1, respectively. Also, it enables an outstanding long-term stability after 1000 cycles at 5A g−1. Combination of electrochemical investigation and DFT calculations reveals that the unique interlayer structure of (NH4)2V7O16•3.6H2O endows the favorable Zn2+ diffusion with suitable adsorption energy and low diffusion energy barrier. This work may pave the way for constructing other high-performance cathode materials for ZIBs and other metal ions batteries.

Abstract:Non‐metallic ammonium ions (NH4+) have spurred great research interest in the field of aqueous batteries, but the host materials for NH4+ storage are still limited. Herein, an oxygen vacancies MnO2–x cathode is introduced for ammonium ion storage by a simple chemical reduction process. The as‐synthesis electrode displays satisfactory electrochemical performance. Ammonium ions (NH4+), as non‐metallic charge carriers, are attracting attention in aqueous batteries due to its low molar mass, element sufficiency, and non‐toxicity. However, the host materials for NH4+ storage are still limited. Herein, an oxygen defects‐rich manganese oxide (MnO2–x) for NH4+ storage are reported. The oxygen defects can endow the MnO2–x sample with improved electric conductivity and low interface activation energy. The electrochemical reaction mechanism is also verified by using ex situ X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR), demonstrating the insertion and extraction of NH4+ in the MnO2–x by formation/breaking of a hydrogen bond. As a result, MnO2–x delivers a high capacity of 109.9 mAh g−1 at the current density of 0.5 A g−1 and retention of 24 mAh g−1 after 1000 cycles at the current density of 4 A g−1, outperforming the pristine MnO2 sample.

Abstract:Aqueous ammonium-ion batteries are eco-friendly and abundant systems that exhibit diffusion. These systems have been reported in recent years. Vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) with a layered structure is a good electrode material. A Co-doped V2O5 cathode characterized by good reversibility and rate performance was prepared using the hydrothermal method to improve the ionic diffusion kinetics characterizing the systems and address the issue of low conductivity of V2O5. Saturated V2O5 (NH4)2SO4 solution was used as the electrolyte to fabricate the ammonium ion battery. Pure V2O5 and V2O5 samples with varying levels of cobalt dopants, V2O5-2Co samples doped with 2 % cobalt exhibited a maximum capacity of 172 mAh g–1 and coulombic efficiency of 61.6 % after 500 cycles at the current density of 1.0 A g–1. This indicated good cyclic reversibility. The high energy density was established to be ~152 Wh kg–1, and the capacity retention rate was 49.2 % after 1000 cycles. These results indicate that Co-doped V2O5 nanoparticles can potentially help in improving the electronic conductivity of the system and provide an effective pathway for rapid electron transfer.

Investigating the Role of Structural Water on the Electrochemical Properties of $α$-V$_2$O$_5$ through Density Functional Theory

Abstract:The $\alpha$ polymorph of V$_2$O$_5$ is one of the few known cathodes capable of reversibly intercalating multivalent ions such as Mg, Ca, Zn and Al, but suffers from sluggish diffusion kinetics. The role of H$_2$O within the electrolyte and between the layers of the structure in the form of a xerogel/aerogel structure, though, has been shown to lower diffusion barriers and lead to other improved electrochemical properties. This density functional theory study systematically investigates how and why the presence of structural H$_2$O within $\alpha$-V$_2$O$_5$ changes the resulting structure, voltage, and diffusion kinetics for the intercalation of Li, Na, Mg, Ca, Zn, and Al. We found that the coordination of H$_2$O molecules with the ion leads to an improvement in voltage and energy density for all ions. This voltage increase was attributed to the extra host sites for electrons present with H$_2$O, thus leading to a stronger ionization of the ion and a higher voltage. We also found that the increase in interlayer distance and a potential "charge shielding" effect drastically changes the electrostatic environment and the resulting diffusion kinetics. For Mg and Ca, this resulted in a decrease in diffusion barrier from 1.3 eV and 2.0 eV to 0.89 eV and 0.4 eV, respectively. We hope that our study motivates similar research regarding the role of water in both V$_2$O$_5$ xerogels/aerogels and other layered transition metal oxides.
MnAl Layered Double Hydroxides: A Robust Host for Aqueous Ammonium‐Ion Storage with Stable Plateau and High Capacity

Abstract:It is found that MnAl‐layered double hydroxide (LDHs) can serve as a robust cathode host for NH4+ ion storage, which leads to both high capacity (183.7 mAh g−1) and stable working voltage (0.2 V) simultaneously. An amorphization conversion during the first charge process is revealed in this LDH series. Rechargeable aqueous batteries based on ammonium‐ions shows great potential in low‐cost energy storage systems owing to their prominent superior characteristics, including ultrafast kinetics, long‐term lifespan, and environmental friendliness. Nevertheless, their development is severely challenged by the fact that the as‐reported cathode materials generally fail to satisfy the requirements on high capacity and stable working voltage simultaneously. Herein, the first NH4+ storage behavior in a MnAl layered double hydroxide (LDH) series is reported. Intriguingly, stable working voltage at 0.2 V is observed in the optimized Mn3Al1‐LDH sample with a high discharge capacity of 183.7 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1. When assembling the rocking‐chair battery using a 3,4,9,10‐perylenetetracarboxylic diimide anode, the full battery delivers a high energy density of 45.8 Wh kg−1, surpassing most of its recently reported counterparts. A rapid amorphization conversion of the LDH cathode during the first charge process is revealed, which should be beneficial to NH4+ isotropic transport accompanied by a highly reversible building/breaking process of hydrogen bonds. The results realize a novel layered inorganic cathode material with superior performance for aqueous ammonium‐ion batteries, and the amorphization conversion to facilitate ion storage provides new insight into electrode design for aqueous batteries.
