Abstract:Raman fiber lasers (RFLs) have been widely utilized in long-haul optical transmission systems as pump sources for distributed Raman amplification (DRA) to increase transmission distance and capacity. However, RFLs with relatively large temporal intensity fluctuations would deteriorate signal quality due to the transfer of relative intensity noise (RIN). In this Letter, a low-noise high-order RFL common cavity pumped by an ytterbium-doped random fiber laser (YRFL) is proposed and demonstrated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Stable 4th-order random Raman lasing operating at 1365 nm is generated with 8.9 W of output power, without use of a multi-stage master oscillation power amplification system. Thanks to the YRFL common-cavity pumping where a wavelength division multiplexer (WDM)-assisted fiber-loop mirror is used to generate stable 1090 nm ytterbium-doped random lasing and cascaded random Raman lasing simultaneously, the RIN of the 1365 nm RFL is suppressed as low as -120dB/Hz without any peak over a 0-100 MHz span. Furthermore, the output power and lasing wavelength of this RFL can be flexibly tuned by adjusting the laser diode pump power, high-reflectivity fiber Bragg grating center wavelength, and single-mode fiber length. Hence, such a low-noise high-order RFL paves a way for the development of novel tunable RFLs with stable temporal output, leading to potential replacement of conventional RFLs for DRA in long-haul optical transmission systems to achieve better performances.

Abstract:An over 200 W high-power first-order random Raman fiber laser (RRFL) at 1238 nm is demonstrated. The laser is based on a half-open cavity with a piece of 30 m phosphosilicate fiber. This RRFL is pumped by a conventional 1064 nm Yb-doped fiber laser. After suppressing the silica Raman component, a maximum output power of 206.7 W is obtained with a full width half-maximum linewidth of 7.1 nm at a pump power of 346.3 W, corresponding to an optical-to-optical efficiency of 59.7%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest reported output power of RRFL on the basis of phosphosilicate fiber with the shortest cavity length. (C) 2019 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Mode locking of a long-cavity Raman fiber laser pumped by a low-noise random fiber laser (RFL) is demonstrated experimentally, where tunable square-wave noise-like pulse (NLP) is generated through nonlinear polarization rotation technology. Pulse duration can be tuned from 26 to 134 ns by controlling the polarization state or pump power at a repetition rate of 93 kHz. A signal-to-noise ratio of 64 dB is obtained due to the low-noise characteristic of RFL. In addition, up to 24th high-order harmonic mode-locked square-wave NLP is observed, which has not been reported in mode-locked Raman fiber lasers with large normal dispersion. This approach not only provides a good temporal stable pump source for mode locking of Raman fiber lasers, but also enriches the methods of laser pulse generation and regulation.

Abstract:An up to 8th order cascaded Raman random fiber laser with high spectral purity is achieved with the pumping of a narrow linewidth amplified spontaneous emission source. The spectral purity is over 90% for all the 8 Stokes orders. The highest output power is 6.9 W at 1691.6 nm with an optical conversion efficiency of 21% from 1062.0 nm. As a comparison, with conventional FBG-based fiber oscillator as pump source, only 47% spectral purity is achieved at 8th order. The temporal stability of the pump laser is proved to play a key role, because the time fluctuation of pump laser is transferred directly to Raman outputs and results in power distribution among different Stokes orders.

Abstract:A low frequency-noise ring random fiber laser (RFL) based on random Bragg grating array (RBGA) feedback is proposed. A dual-cavity fiber Bragg grating Fabry-Perot (FBG-FP) filter, which matches the wavelength of RBGA, is specially designed. Due to the narrower bandwidth, flatter response and steeper rolloff, the dual-cavity FBG-FP filter can significantly suppress the competition-induced frequency jitter and undesired residual random lasing modes, and contribute to establish stable lasing and further reduce frequency noise of RFL. The frequency noise of the proposed RFL is 3 HzHz above 1 kHz, and the frequency jitter is 3.11 1011 over 10 s. The 3-dB linewidth is 490 Hz with a 40 dB of optical signal-to-noise ratio.

Abstract:Cascaded random Raman fiber lasers (CRRFLs) have been used as a new platform for designing high power and wavelength-agile laser sources. Recently, CRRFL pumped by ytterbium-doped random fiber laser (YRFL) has shown both high power output and low relative intensity noise (RIN). Here, by using a wavelength- and bandwidth-tunable point reflector in YRFL, we experimentally investigate the impacts of YRFL on the spectral and RIN properties of the CRRFL. We verify that the bandwidth of the point reflector in YRFL determines the bandwidth and temporal stability of YRFL. It is found that with an increase in the bandwidth of the point reflector in YRFL from 0.2nm to 1.4nm, CRRFL with higher spectral purity and lower RIN can be achieved due to better temporal stability of YRFL pump. By broadening the point reflector’s bandwidth to 1.4nm, the lasing power, spectral purity, and RIN of the 4th-order random lasing at 1349nm can reach 3.03W, 96.34%, and −115.19 dB/Hz, respectively. For comparison, the spectral purity and RIN of the 4th-order random lasing with the point reflector’s bandwidth of 0.2 nm are only 91.20% and −107.99dB/Hz, respectively. Also, we realize a wavelength widely tunable CRRFL pumped by a wavelength-tunable YRFL. This work provides a new platform for the development of ideal distributed Raman amplification pump sources based on CRRFLs with both good temporal stability and wide wavelength tunability, which is of great importance in applications of optical fiber communication and distributed sensing.

Abstract:Ultrafast Raman fiber lasers are wavelength-agile light sources for various scientific and medical applications. Pulse pumping is an efficient way to generate a high power ultrafast Raman fiber laser, which however requires real-time synchronization between the pump pulses and laser cavity. A pulse pumped Raman fiber laser with random distributed feedback is investigated. Under repetitive pulse pumping, compound cavities based on distributed Rayleigh scattering are formed automatically to synchronize with the pump pulse train. In a proof of principle experiment, self-synchronization is observed and a stable picosecond pulsed random laser is generated at 1120 nm with an average power of 170 mW. Raman gain and random distributed feedback are spatially separated in the present pulse pumped laser configuration. This allows a direct characterization of the random distributed feedback and a comparison between random lasing and amplified spontaneous emission, which is not possible in previous continuous wave pumped random Raman fiber lasers.

Abstract:A high-power multi-transverse modes random fiber laser (RFL) is investigated by combining a master oscillator power-amplifier (MOPA) configuration with a segment of extra-large mode area step-index multimode fiber (MMF). Spatial coherence of the high-power multi-transverse modes RFL has been analyzed, which shows that speckle contrast is reduced dramatically with the output power increasing. In this way, considerably low speckle contrast of ~0.01 is achieved under high laser power of ~56 W, which are the records for multi-transverse modes RFLs in both spatial coherence and output power. This work paves a way to develop high-power RFLs with very low spatial coherence for wide-range speckle-free imaging and free-space communication applications.

Abstract:Low noise laser sources with narrow linewidth and low intensity noise are key tools in a broad range of applications such as optical sense, microwave photonics, coherent optical communications and so on. The report gives an introduction about our research progress of the narrow-linewidth single frequency DFB fiber lasers. An internally developed DFB fiber laser is developed. The noise characteristic of laser output is studied in detail. The frequency noise in low Fourier frequency is reduced via using the low noise pump and intracavity optical negative feedback. Furthermore, an injecting lock scheme is used to reduce the intensity noise. A fiber laser output with low frequency noise and low intensity noise has been demonstrated.

Abstract:Raman fiber lasers with high spectral purity and simple structure are essential for the high-power fiber lasers beyond the conventional emission band of active dopants. In this paper, we demonstrate a compact random Raman fiber laser (RRFL) oscillator with spectral purity of over 99%. The RRFL is generated in a full-open cavity which is counter-pumped by a random ytterbium-doped fiber laser with half-open cavity. They share the same piece of passive fiber to form the cavity, a fiber Bragg grating separates the signal light and pump light for the output. This configuration promises the compactness and high spectral purity of the RRFL. Leveraging the spatiotemporal gain-modulation, the RRFL can provide both continuous-wave output and stable pulsed output through adjusting the pump power. The output laser of continuous-wave operation and pulsing operation exhibits spectral purity of 99.4% and 99.5% around 1134 nm, respectively. This work offers a simple and robust solution for high-spectral-purity Raman fiber lasers of both continuous-wave operation and pulsed operation of hundred-watt level.

Abstract:Low–coherence laser is regarded as the key to mitigating laser–plasma instability (LPI) in laser–driven inertial confinement fusion (ICF), where LPI can decrease the laser energy coupled to the target. With the merits of low coherence, high spectral stability, and flexible output characteristics, the Raman random fiber laser (RRFL) is considered to be a candidate light source in ICF. In this paper, the 1054 nm RRFL with high slope efficiency is achieved for the first time. In the RRFL pump source design section, we have optimized the ytterbium–doped fiber (YDF) length by simulation and amplified the power by Master Oscillator Power Amplifier (MOPA) to realize a 1011 nm YDF laser with 47.3 dB optical signal–to–noise ratio (OSNR). In terms of RRFL cavity design, a fiber loop mirror and Rayleigh scattering in the HI 1060 Flex fiber provide wideband point feedback and random distributed feedback, respectively. Based on this system, we achieve an RRFL output with 0.4 nm half–maximum full width, 182% slope efficiency, and 41.3 dB OSNR. This work will provide guidance for the application of RRFL in high–energy–density physics research.

Abstract:In this paper, we make a comprehensive study on a highly efficient half-open cavity design for high power random fiber laser (RFL). With the theoretical analysis, we optimize the cavity's fiber length for getting higher output power within the scheme, i.e., shorter fiber length is preferred for efficiently harvesting the first order random lasing at the open end of the cavity. As the verification of the theory, we experimentally demonstrate a high output power (7 W), highly efficient (70% optical conversion efficiency) RFL working at 1140 nm, using 10W 1090 nm laser as the pump source and only 1 km standard single-mode fiber as the distributed cavity.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate the power scalability in a novel random Raman fiber laser (RRFL) with localized random feedback provided by an ultrashort low-reflection random fiber grating (RFG). The RFG is composed of a randomly distributed sub-grating array, and is directly written by a femtosecond laser with point-by-point inscription approach. The fabricated RFG has a total length of only 1.86 mm and thus has relatively broad reflection peaks. A narrow-band high-reflection fiber Bragg grating at the end of the Fabry-Perot cavity can easily implement spectral filtering to ensure that the RRFL only lases at the wavelength of the highest reflection peak of the RFG due to the large wavelength separation between adjacent reflection peaks in RFG. The RRFL has a low threshold of 2.16W and a high slope efficiency of 91.56, and the optical signal-to-noise ratio is 55 dB. Moreover, the spectral broadening of this RRFL is proved to be turbulence-induced square-root broadening.

Abstract:In this letter, we numerically study and experimentally achieve a low-threshold, high-efficiency random fiber laser, featuring a linear output as well. The lasing cavity incorporates a section of standard single-mode fiber and a band-selective point reflector placed at the far end of the fiber. The numerical result indicates that most energy is further pushed toward the pump side comparing with the open cavity scheme, producing a high-efficiency output. Then, we analyze the dependence of threshold and slope efficiency on cavity length and pumping wavelength. Most importantly, shorter cavity length would yield higher efficiency, and for different pumping wavelengths, there will be different cavity lengths corresponding to the lowest lasing threshold. Finally, we deliberately choose the parameters and experimentally achieve an 1145-nm random fiber laser with 7.13-W output and >90% slope efficiency (with 10-W pump), while the slope efficiency is almost constant above the 2-W lasing threshold. This letter provides a comprehensive guideline for designing such random fiber lasers with tailored performance.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a narrow linewidth, low frequency noise Er-doped fiber ring laser with resonant feedback in a femtosecond laser induced random medium of deep refractive index modulation in three dimensions. Eight concatenated single-mode fiber segments about 1 cm long, each carry a total of 8 × 500 randomly spaced laser-written-planes. Numerous low-finesse spectral filters are formed to significantly suppress sub-cavity modes, ensuring single-mode operation within a wavelength-locking range. The linewidth of the laser is 2.1 kHz with 58 dB side-mode-suppression-ratio. The frequency noise is ∼1 Hz/Hz1/2 above 1 kHz, and the frequency jitter is ∼1.8 × 10−12 over 100 s.
