Abstract:Silicone rubber (SR) composite insulators have been widely used in overhead lines because of their numerous advantages compared with the traditional porcelain and glass insulators. However, the SR shed and housing of these insulators often exhibits different degrees of ageing after years of service. Chalking is a typical type of ageing phenomena found on the surface of SR composite insulators, and has been noticed in different countries and regions. The chalking phenomenon has led to widespread concern about long-time performance of composite insulators by the utilities, so systematic and deep research is needed. Hardening and chalking on the surfaces of composite insulators have been found for a long time and a number of studies have been carried on. However, the existing researches mainly concentrate on analyzing of chalking characteristics and changes of performances caused by chalking. The in-depth study on the mechanism of chalking is relatively rare at present. In this research, a SR composite insulator with chalking on its surface was investigated. The differences of the chalking and the virgin samples were analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (PGC-MS). It was found that the chalking of SR is caused by oxidative degradation of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) chain segment. Fractured siloxane fragments were generated by the degradation of PDMS, which destroyed the cross-linked structure of SR. The residual fillers together with the fractured siloxane formed the chalking layer.
