Abstract:We present the direct observation of four-wave mixing over a detuning range of more than 3 THz in an InGaAs/AlInAs strain-compensated quantum cascade laser (QCL) amplifier emitting at 4.3 μm by simultaneous injection of a single mode QCL and a broadly tunable source. From its intensity, we determine a χ(3) of 0.9 × 10−15 m2 V−2, in good agreement with transport model simulations based on the density matrix approach. This four-wave-mixing mechanism is an important driving factor in mode proliferation occurring in connection with the recent demonstration of comb generation in broadband QCLs.

Abstract:We theoretically present and experimentally demonstrate all-optical wavelength multicasting based on cascaded four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fibers only using a single pump. The cascaded FWM effect is analyzed based on the sum amplitude method, which overcomes the limitation of the number of analyzed idlers, and the performance of the wavelength multicasting is evaluated. By using a continuous wave pump and a pulse train as the signal, multiple-order idlers are experimentally generated and the patterns of 6 multicasting channels are measured. Regardless of the dynamic region of the tunable filter, this method has the potential to realize more multicasting channels, especially when higher pump and signal powers are used.

Abstract:Four wave mixing (FWM) is an important way to generate supercontinuum and frequency combs in the mid-infrared band. Here, we obtain simultaneous synthetic FWM in the visible and mid-infrared bands by cascading quadratic nonlinear processes in a periodically poled lithium niobate crystal (PPLN), which has a 110dB(at 3000nm) higher conversion efficiency than the FWM directly generated by third-order susceptibilities in bulk PPLN crystals. A general model of this process is developed that is in full agreement with the experimental verifications. The frequency difference between the new frequency components can be freely tuned by changing the frequency difference of the dual pump lasers. Furthermore, by increasing the conversion bandwidth and efficiency of the cascaded processes, it is feasible to generate frequency combs in three bands the visible, near-infrared and mid-infrared bands simultaneously through high-order cascaded processes. This work opens up a new avenue toward free-tuning multiband frequency comb generation with multi-octaves frequency spanning, which will have significant applications in fields such as mid-infrared gas sensing, lidar and precision spectroscopy.

Abstract:Injecting a weak narrow-linewidth CW trigger to control the picosecond pulse pumped supercontinuum (SC) generation in a highly nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber (HNL-DSF), the Raman soliton at 2 μm is experimentally observed. We demonstrate that the cascaded four-wave mixing (FWM) caused by the weak CW trigger accelerates soliton fission and collision, and the large red-shift by the Raman effect in fibers induces obvious Raman soliton occurring in the long wavelength range of SC. A reduced effect on spectral modification on the SC spectrum at higher pump powers is also observed in the experiment. Simulations of the spectral evolution and spectrogram are carried out to verify the experimental observation. Both experiment and simulation results show the SC characteristics in the mid-infrared region can be greatly improved by the triggering effect.

Abstract:Abstract We theoretically study the four-wave mixing (FWM) response in a quantum dot-cavity coupling system, where a two-level quantum dot (QD) is placed in an optical cavity while the cavity mode is coupled to the nanomechanical resonator via radiation pressure. The influences of the QD-cavity coupling strength, the Rabi coupling strength of the QD, and the power of the pump light on the FWM intensity are mainly considered. The numerical results show that the FWM intensity in this hybrid system can be significantly enhanced by increasing the QD-cavity coupling strength. In addition, the FWM intensity can be effectively modulated by the Rabi coupling strength and the pump power. Furthermore, the effects of the cavity decay rate and the cavity-pump detuning on the FWM signal are also explored. The obtained results may have potential applications in the fields of quantum optics and quantum information science.

Abstract:We propose a tunable on-chip micromaser using a superconducting quantumcircuit (SQC). By taking advantage of externally controllable statetransitions, a state population inversion can be achieved and preserved for thetwo working levels of the SQC and, when needed, the SQC can generate a singlephoton. We can regularly repeat these processes in each cycle when thepreviously generated photon in the cavity is decaying, so that a periodicsequence of single photons can be produced persistently. This provides acontrollable way for implementing a persistent single-photon source on amicroelectronic chip.

Abstract:We demonstrate almost octave-spanning cascaded four-wave mixing (CFWM) in optical microfibers. Pumped by two synchronized picosecond lasers at about 850 nm, microfibers with a length of 10-20 cm can generate CFWM spanning from a few hundred nanometers to almost one octave, depending on the diameter of the microfibers and the detuning between the two pumps. CFWM in microfibers, which has the advantages of easy fabrication, highly efficient coupling, relatively short length, and easy integration with fiber systems, can be used for applications in widely tunable multiline phase-sensitive amplification, multiwavelength coherent sources, and ultrashort pulse synthesis.
Coherent competition and control between three-wave mixing and four-wave mixing in superconducting circuits

Abstract:Exploring intermixing and interplay between different frequency-mixing processes has always been one of the interesting subjects at the interface of nonlinear optics with quantum optics. Here we investigate coherent competition and control between three-wave mixing (TWM) and four-wave mixing (FWM) in a cyclic three-level superconducting quantum system. In the weak control-field regime, strong competition leads to an alternating oscillation between TWM and FWM signals and this oscillation is a signature of strong energy exchange between these two nonlinear processes. In particular, such oscillation is absent from conventional multi-wave mixing in atomic systems. Surprisingly, synchronous TWM and FWM processes are demonstrated in the strong control-field regime and, at the same time, their efficiencies can be as high as 40% and 45%, respectively. Our study shows that these competitive behaviors between TWM and FWM can be manipulated by tuning the control-field intensity.

Abstract:We experimentally and numerically study the supercontinuum (SC) generation with dense interference fringes by two-soliton bound state picosecond lasers based on the soliton fission and self-phase modulation. The simulations are consistent with the experimental results. The bandwidth, flatness and modulation depth of SC can be improved through detailed dispersion optimization. The simulation results suggest that the interference fringes depend on the two-soliton bound state and their modulation period can be adjusted by changing its pulse separation. We found that a smaller pulse duration helps to strengthen the modulation depth of SC. Increasing the pulse duration and amplifier gain will cause the deterioration of the modulation depth and coherence of SC, which indicates the necessity of reducing noise in the system. This work provides an interesting and novel method to study the mechanism of SC generation.

Abstract:We investigate the femtosecond supercontinuum generation and compression in layered Kerr media. The condition for extending the setup in a sustainable way is revealed, with characteristic spectral and temporal features. We demonstrate tenfold pulse compression in a single-stage multiplate setup by including 14 layers of the thin medium.

Abstract:An ultrabroadband supercontinuum (SC) is demonstrated in a pure silica photonic crystal fiber (PCF) pumped by quasi-continuous wave nanosecond-long pulses at 1,064 nm. The generated SC spectra extending from 450 to at least 2,400 nm have the salient feature of a short wavelength regime below the pump wavelength, which is much higher in intensity than the long-wavelength over the pump wavelength. The influence of pump power and repetition rates on SC generation (SCG) is explored. Results suggest that this pump source has both the advantages of short-pulse and continuous-wave pumps for SCG.

Abstract:Compact chip-scale comb sources are of significant interest for many practical applications. Here, we experimentally study the generation of supercontinuum (SC) in an axially varying integrated waveguide. We show that the local tuning of the dispersion enables the continuous blue shift of dispersive waves thanks to their trapping by the strongly compressed pump pulse. This mechanism provides new insight into supercontinuum generation in a dispersion varying integrated waveguide. Pumped close to 2.2 $\mu$m in the femtosecond regime and at a pulse energy of $\sim$ 4 pJ, the output spectrum extends from 1.1 $\mu$m up to 2.76 $\mu$m and shows good coherence properties. Octave-spanning SC is also observed at input energy as low as $\sim$ 0.9 pJ. We show that the supercontinuum is more robust against variations of the input pulse parameters and is also spectrally flatter in our numerically optimized waveguide than in fixed-width waveguides. This research demonstrates the potential of dispersion varying waveguides for coherent SC generation and paves the way for integrated low power applications, such as chip-scale frequency comb generation, precision spectroscopy, optical frequency metrology, and wide-band wavelength division multiplexing in the near-infrared.

Abstract:We analyze a four-wave mixing enhancement scheme based on a specific lifetime-broadened four-level atomic configuration. The enhancement can mainly be controlled through the time-dependent propagation dynamics of the applied pulse fields, but it is also found to depend on the sample density and spontaneous emission of the levels involved. A systematic analysis, that illustrates how the applied pulses dynamics, density, and spontaneous emission affect the mixing conversion efficiency, is carried out, anticipating substantially large efficiencies for realistic atomic parameters and short weak laser pulses.
