Abstract:The analytical solutions of the coupling equations were given with any arbitrary complex coefficient based on the stead state coupling equations of photorefractive two-wave mixing (TWM) of high speed amplitude modulated beams. The effect of the complex coupling coefficient on photorefractive TWM was discussed. Both the theoretical analysis and the numerical computation show that the effects of the real part and the imaginary part of the complex coupling coefficient on the direct component, the alternating component and the average amplifications are quite different.

Abstract:We analytically solve the steady-state coupling equations of photorefractive two-wave mixing with a rapidly phase modulated signal for an arbitrary complex coupling constant without the undepleted pump assumption. It shows that the imaginary part of the coupling constant also contributes to the energy transfer in photorefractive two-wave mixing though the time average output intensity is only determined by the real part of the coupling constant. The energy transfer may exist even when the real part of the coupling constant is zero. The photorefractive two-wave-mixing with high-speed sinusoidal phase modulation is discussed in detail.

Abstract:The mixing of two sets of mutually coherent beams, termed double two-beam mixing, is considered. At low modulation depth, combination gratings of the primaries are analyzed theoretically and show that the internal electric fields in photorefractive media also have cross components with wave vectors K-1 +/- K-2 in addition to the primary components K-1 and K-2 and higher orders of 2K(1) and 2K(2), where K-1 and K-2 are wave vectors of two fringes. Each component is given in the form of an analytical solution, and the coupling behavior is studied for all relations between K-1 and K-2. The results show that the coupling behavior depends not only on the primary gratings but also on the combination grating K-1 and K-2 and the high-order grating 2K(1) or 2K(2). These features can be employed theoretically in phase-intensity transform and wavelength conversion. (C) 1996 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:. We present the numerical results of the photorefractive two-wave mixing in the presence of an incoherent beam by considering the influence of the ratios of the intensities and the light-excitation cross sections of the incoherent beam to the coherent beams on the space-charge field and the effective coupling coefficient. The results show that the incoherent beam can control the intensity of the coherent beams effectively. The experimental results agree with the theory well. One application is demonstrated to obtain the positive and negative coherent replicas of an incoherent image. The coherent images have a resolution of 80.6 line pairs/mm.

Abstract:A slowing down of light pulses using backward-wave four-wave mixing is achieved in photorefractive crystals with different coupling strength. The delay and width of the output pulse are studied as a function of the input pulse width and pump intensity ratio for the amplified transmitted beam and for the phase-conjugated beam. The delay characteristics are compared with those of the two-beam coupling. It is demonstrated that the four-wave mixing process ensures a larger slowing down of short pulses (pulses with width shorter than the photorefractive response time) as compared to the photorefractive two-beam coupling scheme and guarantees the elimination of forerunners. The delay of long pulses in the four-wave mixing configuration is almost the same as the one that can be reached with two-beam coupling. The effect of absorption on the nonlinear shape transformation of the output pulses is discussed qualitatively.

Abstract:Theoretical and experimental studies of phase-modulation effects in degenerate four-wave mixing are presented in this paper. Our experiments and analysis show that phase-modulation effects change the phase-matching condition and lead to a decrease in signal output and a degradation in conjugation fidelity.

Abstract:An analytical solution of the dynamic coupled wave equations as a function of time in a photorefractive medium at large modulation depths is presented by using the empirically corrected function introduced by Kawk et al. [Optics Commun. 105 (1994) 353–358]. The expiression for the response time of two-wave coupling at large modulation depths is also presented. It shows that the response time is dependent on both the material parameters and experimental parameters. The dynamic two-wave mixing gain for large modulation index is developed. The theoretical analysis shows good agreement with the experimental results in the doped KNSBN crystal for the whole range of modulation m.

Most of the previous works in this area are on wave mixing with mutually coherent waves.1 It is known that partial temporal coherence may affect the strength of the grating and the coupling.2 Two-wave mixing with partially coherent waves has been studied recently for the case of transmission grating interaction4-5. In this paper, we present the results of our theoretical and experimental investigation for the case of reflection grating interaction.

Abstract:We theoretically present and experimentally demonstrate all-optical wavelength multicasting based on cascaded four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fibers only using a single pump. The cascaded FWM effect is analyzed based on the sum amplitude method, which overcomes the limitation of the number of analyzed idlers, and the performance of the wavelength multicasting is evaluated. By using a continuous wave pump and a pulse train as the signal, multiple-order idlers are experimentally generated and the patterns of 6 multicasting channels are measured. Regardless of the dynamic region of the tunable filter, this method has the potential to realize more multicasting channels, especially when higher pump and signal powers are used.

Abstract:Four-wave mixing process with a large group index difference of the signal and idler pulses in a nonlinear optical fiber is theoretically investigated when the pump is continuous light. We prove that in the four-wave mixing process, the signal and idler waves would finally propagate in a common group velocity in spite of their different group indices. When the effective phase mismatch in four-wave mixing is not zero, their carrier frequencies shift in different directions. The asymptotic result of the signal and idler shape and carrier frequency shift are obtained. The theoretical prediction is validated by the numerical simulation.

Abstract:We propose a universal approach to provide wide-band multimode four-wave mixing independently of the intrinsic dispersion of the involved waveguide modes. Concepts from quantum mechanics and subwavelength engineering are adopted to design an effective lateral confinement photonic well, i.e., with a graded potential along the waveguide cross section providing flexible control over the modes' confinement. The self-adaptive nature of the waveguide boundary allows different spatial modes with equi-spaced frequencies and shared propagation wavevector, thus automatically fulfilling both energy conservation and wavevector phase matching conditions. Capitalizing on this concept, we show phase-matching among modes separated by 400 nm (bridging from telecom wavelengths to almost 2 mu m), with less than 5% deviation in a remarkably large bandwidth exceeding 300 nm. Furthermore, we also show the flexibility of the proposed approach that can be seamlessly adapted to different technology platforms. This strategy opens a new design space for versatile on-chip nonlinear applications in which the manipulation of energy spacing and phase matching is pivotal, e.g., all-optical signal processing with four-wave mixing, mid-infrared supercontinuum or frequency comb light generation, or Brillouin scattering with selectable phonon energy.

Abstract:Four wave mixing (FWM) is an important way to generate supercontinuum and frequency combs in the mid-infrared band. Here, we obtain simultaneous synthetic FWM in the visible and mid-infrared bands by cascading quadratic nonlinear processes in a periodically poled lithium niobate crystal (PPLN), which has a 110dB(at 3000nm) higher conversion efficiency than the FWM directly generated by third-order susceptibilities in bulk PPLN crystals. A general model of this process is developed that is in full agreement with the experimental verifications. The frequency difference between the new frequency components can be freely tuned by changing the frequency difference of the dual pump lasers. Furthermore, by increasing the conversion bandwidth and efficiency of the cascaded processes, it is feasible to generate frequency combs in three bands the visible, near-infrared and mid-infrared bands simultaneously through high-order cascaded processes. This work opens up a new avenue toward free-tuning multiband frequency comb generation with multi-octaves frequency spanning, which will have significant applications in fields such as mid-infrared gas sensing, lidar and precision spectroscopy.

Abstract:Employing optical sources with different wavelength as the input optical signals of WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) system, the phenomenon of four wave mixing in the experiment was analyzed. The amplitudes of four wave mixing in different optical fiber chains were compared. In order to decrease the four wave mixing effect, the fiber with zero dispersion wave close to the signal optical pulse should be put far away from Er-doped fiber amplifier in each amplifier spacing.

Abstract:Phase-conjugate (PC) reflectivity is one of the most important parameters that characterize the four-wave mixing process in photorefractive (PR) materials. In this paper, the effect of the crystal thickness, modulation ratio and pump intensity ratio on the PC reflectivity of four-wave has been studied in case of the degenerate four-wave mixing process in PR materials. Also, the influence of photoconductivity and dielectric constant of PR materials on the PC reflectivity of the four-wave has been analyzed in case of the non-degenerate wave mixing process of PR materials. It has been found that the reflectivity of the PC wave for BGO and BSO have shown almost similar behavior like LiNbO3 with the peak values observed at 1.21 pS/cm and 1.69 pS/cm. The present results showed that the reflectivity of the PC wave is different for all the materials of dielectric constant 32 (LiNbO3), 40 (BGO) and 56 (BSO) and is higher for higher value of dielectric constant, suggesting that the reflectivity of the PC wave not only depends on the dielectric constant of the photorefractive materials but also strongly depends upon the photoconductivity of the materials. For lower value of coupling coefficient, it is observed that the peak intensity of reflectivity of PC wave occur at higher thickness and for higher values of coupling coefficient it is observed at lower crystal thickness. The enhancement in the reflectivity of the optical phase-conjugate wave would greatly improve the performance of the devices based on the four wave mixing process. Such devices find applications in the areas like optical memories, information processing, real-time processing, beam steering, beam combining, resonators and pattern formation.

Abstract:In the present article, we derive optimal spatially varying control fields, which maximize the four-wave mixing efficiency in a four-subband semiconductor asymmetric double quantum well, following analogous works in atomic systems. The control fields coherently prepare the medium, where a weak probe pulse is propagated and eventually converted to a signal pulse at the output. The optimal fields, which maximize the conversion efficiency for a given propagation length, are obtained by applying optimal control theory to a simplified form of propagation equations but are tested with numerical simulations using the full set of Maxwell–Schrödinger equations, which accurately describe the propagation of light pulses in the medium. For short propagation distances, the proposed optimal scheme outperforms a simpler spatially changing control protocol that we recently studied, while for larger distances, the efficiency of both protocols approaches unity. The present work is expected to find application in frequency conversion between light beams, conversion between light beams carrying orbital angular momentum, and nonlinear optical amplification.

Abstract:We study theoretically the fidelities of output coherent images in incoherent-to-coherent conversion based on photorefractive two-wave mixing in the presence of an incoherent image-bearing beam. A vector version of the whole beam split step method is developed. The dependencies of the fidelities of output coherent images on geometric and physical parameters such as the incident direction of the beams, the intensity ratios between the beams, and coupling coefficients are investigated in detail.
