Abstract:Numerical wavefield simulation such as commercial simulation software enables an optimal design of an ultrasound computed tomography (USCT) system for clinical purpose of before prototyping. Such simulator, not developed for optimal design though, can provide rapid implementation for acoustic wave propagation but may lead to unexpected errors during the establishment of numerical model. Here, we propose an auto-tuning numerical method (ATNM), aiming to optimize physical parameters (e.g. grid size, Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) number, perfectly matched layer (PML) absorption coefficient, etc) such that the enumerated wavefield computed on those converges to the corresponding analytical solution derived from acoustic scattering theory. We use genetic algorithm (GA) to automatically calibrate numerical wavefield. Our preliminary test is to investigate the best design of PML absorption coefficient for USCT to minimize mean relative error (MRE) between the k-Wave simulation and the analytic model and show its efficacy. The experimental results verify our hypothesis that this calibrated numerical simulator on a simple physical domain is generalizable to any other domains.

Abstract:In this article, a large-scale electromagnetic-thermal-mechanical co-simulation solver is implemented, to simulate complex radio frequency components by using a high performance computing framework. The proposed solver integrates the frequency-domain electric field simulation, with time-domain thermal and thermal-induced stress simulations, via a multiphysics coupling iterative process. In order to speed up the cosimulation, a Krylov subspace method with a domain decomposition method (DDM) preconditioner is used. First, the developed multiphysics solver is verified with the commercial software COMSOL Multiphysics. Then, the parallel performance of our cosimulation solver, with different ghost mesh thicknesses, is tested on a supercomputer. Finally, some multiphysics results of filters and a real-world system-in-package (SiP) are obtained with our proposed solver.

Abstract:The surface acoustic wave (SAW) propagating in a sample of steel is simulated by using finite element method (FEM). The waves are excited by a load function with propagation properties such as phase velocity dispersion and wide bandwidth. A two-dimensional model consisting of surface defects loaded with a wideband 50–200 MHz and short time 0.1 μs displacement function is investigated in the time and frequency domains. By transient dynamic analysis, Fourier transform and dispersion calculation, snapshots of propagating wave and responses from sensing points are presented. It is indicated that this supervision approach is sensitive to the surface cracks and reflections.

Abstract:This paper discusses the applicability of a single precision computation with a graphics processing unit for the finite elements method simulation of surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices using the hierarchical cascading technique (HCT). The HCT simulation is performed in both single and double precision, and the required computational time, memory size and accuracy are compared. Three SAW device structures are discussed; (a) a synchronous resonator on 42 degrees YX-LiTaO3 (42-LT), (b) a double mode SAW (DMS) filter on 42-LT, and (c) a synchronous resonator on 42-LT/Si bonded wafer. Abstract:In this paper, a hybrid full-wave analysis of surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices is proposed to achieve accurate and fast simulation. The partial differential equation (PDE) models of the physical system in question and graphics processing unit (GPU)-assisted hierarchical cascading technology (HCT) are used to calculate acoustic-electric characteristics of a SAW filter. The practical solid model of the radio frequency (RF) filter package is constructed in High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) software and the parasitic electromagnetics of the entire package is considered in the design process. The PDE-based models of the two-dimensional finite element method (2D-FEM) are derived in detail and solved by the PDE module embedded in COMSOL Multiphysics. Due to the advantages of PDE-based 2D-FEM, it is universal, efficient and not restricted to handling arbitrary materials and crystal cuts, electrode shapes, and multi-layered substrate. Combining COMSOL Multiphysics with a user-friendly interface, a flexible way of modeling and mesh generation, it can greatly reduce the complicated process of modeling and physical properties definition. Based on a hybrid full-wave analysis, we present an example application of this approach on a TC-SAW ladder filter with 5° YX-cut LiNbO3 substrate. Numerical results and measurements were calculated for comparison, and the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method were verified.

Abstract:This paper proposes a reduced 1D model for the full wave simulation of SAW in high speed with improved accuracy. Simplifications underlying the traditional coupling-of-modes model are introduced to the full wave analysis of the device structure supporting the Bleustein-Gulyaev-Shimizu wave. Then a 1D equation with respect to the surface charge to be solved is derived. The synchronous IDT structure is analyzed. In the case, the strip admittance is given in a closed form, and it can be reduced into a form given by Koskela, et al, which is known to offer good accuracy for the simulation of SH-type SAWs.

Abstract:Numerical simulations based on the Finite Volume Method (FVM) solve the wave equation directly to provide highly accurate predictions of the sound field in ocean waveguides without model simplification and loss of generality. However, the huge computational complexity severely limits the application range of direct numerical solvers for underwater acoustic waves. In this paper, a highly scalable parallel algorithm for solving acoustic models using the cell-centred finite volume method was proposed, and a corresponding direct numerical solver was developed and validated. The paper has three main findings as follows. Firstly, the acoustic solver was implemented based on a generic framework for solving partial differential equations (PDEs), so that more complicated models such as fluid–sound coupling and sound–structure coupling could be easily extended. Secondly, the large spatial scales of underwater sound propagation can be efficiently calculated by parallel computing. Thirdly, our approach demonstrated high computational accuracy and the ability to support complex scenarios. We verify the accuracy and efficiency of the solver through experiments, and prove the solving ability of the solver in large-scale, complex structures and complex configurations.

Abstract:A novel boundary element method based on subdivision surfaces is applied to simulate wave scattering problems governed by the Helmholtz equation. The Loop subdivision scheme widely used in the CAD (computer aided design) field is applied to represent the geometric model and approximate physical field variables. The novelty of this work is that it is the first time to apply the fast multipole method for subdivision surface boundary element method to accelerate the solution of the system of equations. It is demonstrated that the subdivision surfaces boundary element method based on the Loop subdivision scheme performs well in terms of accuracy, and automatically provides multiresolution subdivision hierarchy models to meet the requirements of different precision. This approach is then applied to several real-world applications to illustrate the potential for integrated engineering analysis.

Abstract:This paper proposes a simplified boundary element method (BEM)for fast and accurate simulation of surface acoustic wave (SAW)devices where acoustic scattering at structural discontinuities is taken into account. The method is based on a formalism proposed by one of the authors but is expanded to a convolution integral form between the Green function and surface charge like BEM for the analysis of finite structures with arbitrary electrode configurations. Another significant merit is compatibility of the parameters required for the analysis with those for the coupling of modes analysis which have already been established for SAW device design.

Abstract:This paper proposes an application of a general purpose graphic processing unit (GPGPU) to the finite element method analysis based on the hierarchical cascading technique (HCT). It is proved that GPGPU can accelerate the HCT significantly, especially for large scale problems. Thanks to significant acceleration, full three-dimensional simulation is possible for practical surface acoustic wave (SAW) device structures. Besides admittance curve, the displacement field is calculated. Abstract:In order to optimize the time-consuming of hierarchical cascade technique (HCT) during finite-length surface acoustic wave (SAW) device simulation, an improved HCT simulation method was proposed. To improve the stability of calculation and accelerate the simulation, the system matrix is preprocessed by combining column scaling and equilibrium pretreatment technology, which can reduce the condition number and meet the single-precision numerical calculation requirement. An improved mirror cascade method was used to decrease the number of basic unit blocks, which can be extended to rotary cascade to reduce the number of cascade operations. A search tree was designed to find the optimal cascade sequence and make the number of cascading operations to be the minimum. The numerical experiments were carried out that the simulation speed of the proposed HCT simulation method for finite-length SAW devices was 30%–80% faster than that of mirror cascade and single-precision HCT method and 2–3 times faster than that of traditional HCT simulation. A Quartz resonator was manufactured to further testify the feasibility of the proposed method. The experimental results showed that the simulated Y11 is close to the measured Y11, while the speed of the proposed HCT method was 2.16 times faster than the traditional HCT. The experimental results verify that the proposed method can accelerate the SAW device simulation process.

Abstract:This work uses a finite volume method to investigate three-dimensional acoustic streaming patterns produced by surface acoustic wave (SAW) propagation within microdroplets. A SAW microfluidic interaction has been modelled using a body force acting on elements of the fluid volume within the interaction area between the SAW and fluid. This enables the flow motion to be obtained by solving the laminar incompressible Navier-Stokes equations driven by an effective body force. The velocity of polystyrene particles within droplets during acoustic streaming has been measured and then used to calibrate the amplitudes of the SAW at different RF powers. The numerical prediction of streaming velocities was compared with the experimental results as a function of RF power and a good agreement was observed. This confirmed that the numerical model provides a basic understanding of the nature of 3D SAW/liquid droplet interaction, including SAW mixing and the concentration of particles suspended in water droplets.
A finite element method for modelling electromechanical wave propagation in anisotropic piezoelectric media

Abstract:We describe and evaluate a numerical solution strategy for simulating surface acoustic waves through semiconductor devices with complex geometries. This multi-physics problem is of particular relevance to the design of quantum electronic devices. The mathematical model consists of two coupled partial differential equations for the elastic wave propagation and the electric field, respectively, in anisotropic piezoelectric media. These equations are discretized by the finite element method in space and by a finite difference method in time. The latter method yields a convenient numerical decoupling of the governing equations. We describe how a computer implementation can utilize the decoupling and via object-oriented programming techniques reuse independent codes for the Poisson equation and the linear time-dependent elasticity equation. First we apply the simulator to a simplified model problem for verifying the implementation, and thereafter we show that the methodology is capable of simulating a real-world case from nanotechnology, involving surface acoustic waves in a geometrically non-trivial device made of Gallium Arsenide.

Engineering Analysis with Boundary Elements

Abstract:This paper firstly combines the Burton-Miller-type singular boundary method (BMSBM) with the Loop subdivision surfaces (LSS) for the acoustic simulation of 3D complicated structures. As a modern modeling technique, the LSS provides a flexible and simple means to represent model surfaces by controlling meshes and subdivision rules. Thus, it can achieve arbitrary topology and multi-resolution structures. As a semi-analytical and boundary-type meshless technique, the BMSBM using the fundamental solutions is simple, accurate, and straightforward for solving acoustic radiation and scattering problems. The new approach constructs a geometry model using a subdivision scheme, and therefore can create a multi-resolution hierarchical model meeting various accuracy requirements without a repetitive meshing procedure. The proposed method effectively breaks through the technical bottleneck that the BMSBM makes it difficult to collate boundary nodes of complex structures and achieves a seamless integration between CAD and CAE. The numerical results of three examples demonstrated the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method for acoustic simulation. The present study provides an innovative idea for the subsequent optimization of materials and shapes of acoustic structures, which has the potential to enhance precision and efficiency significantly.

Abstract:Strategically reducing the speed of waves, which greatly improves both the energy density and information capacity of carrier signals in space, is a key enabling factor for signal-processing devices. Among these devices, especially in the prosperous wireless communication industry, surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices based on interdigital transducers (IDTs) currently hold an essential status. However, velocity reduction in traditional IDT-based SAW devices can be achieved only by using specific substrate materials that are generally of lower hardness, which inevitably leads to an increase in device size and less-optimal electromechanical coupling coefficients. Here, we demonstrate a technological means of realizing slow on-chip SAWs that is relevant for practical rf signal processing, gyrometers, sensing, and transduction. This method takes advantage of the gradual flattening of a Rayleigh-type dispersion band due to the spatial lattice evolution of a surface phononic crystal. In our experiment, the speed of an ultraslow SAW is measured to be approximately 200 m/s, which is even slower than the speed of sound in air and equivalent to 1/17.4 of the speed of the original Rayleigh waves in LiNbO3. Such ultraslow SAWs may have promising applications in time-dependent SAW modulation, high-sensitivity SAW sensors, and SAW nonlinear even quantum-dynamic systems. Additionally, our technique can be similarly applied to a broad range of other two-dimensional or quasi-two-dimensional wave structures, e.g., in electronic, optical, acoustic, and thermal systems.

Abstract:Surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices form an important class of acoustofluidic devices, in which the acoustic waves are generated and propagate along the surface of a piezoelectric substrate. Despite their wide-spread use, only a few fully three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulations have been presented in the literature. In this paper, we present a 3D numerical simulation taking into account the electromechanical fields of the piezoelectric SAW device, the acoustic displacement field in the attached elastic material, in which the liquid-filled microchannel is embedded, the acoustic fields inside the microchannel, as well as the resulting acoustic radiation force and streaming-induced drag force acting on micro- and nanoparticles suspended in the microchannel. A specific device design is presented, for which the numerical predictions of the acoustic resonances and the acoustophoretic repsonse of suspended microparticles in 3D are successfully compared with experimental observations. The simulation provides a physical explanation of the the observed qualitative difference between devices with an acoustically soft and hard lid in terms of traveling and standing waves, respectively. The simulations also correctly predict the existence and position of the observed in-plane streaming flow rolls. The presented simulation model may be useful in the development of SAW devices optimized for various acoustofluidic tasks.

An Efficient Sylvester Equation Solver for Time Domain Circuit Simulation by Wavelet Collocation Method.

Abstract:The Fast Wavelet Collocation Method (FWCM) is a recently proposed circuit simulation approach, which is very promising in achieving uniform error distribution and handling singularities in high-speed circuits, compared with conventional time domain simulation methods. In this paper, we aim to extend the wavelet collocation method to the simulation of large-scale circuits, where a large dimension Sylvester equation needs to be solved. The performance of the wavelet simulator is dominated by the time and memory consumption of the Sylvester equation solver. In order to improve the simulation efficiency, we propose a direct method to solve the Sylvester equation by Schur decomposition. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed simulator can achieve higher computation speed and higher simulation accuracy as well as more robust convergence than SPICE.
