Abstract:We demonstrate that optical microfibers integrated in Yb-doped fiber lasers boost broadband noise-like pulse (NLP) generation via dispersion and nonlinearity management, with an optical spectrum spanning from below 1000 nm to beyond 1600 nm when the diameter of the optical microfiber is 1.2 µm. Numerical simulations show that dispersion and nonlinearity management provided by the optical microfiber is responsible for the broadband NLP generation. Furthermore, it is shown experimentally that dispersion and nonlinearity management via optical microfibers can also bring the highest optical rogue waves along with the broadest optical spectrum.

Abstract:We investigate the average power scalability of all-normal-dispersion fiber integrated lasers with a nonlinear amplifying loop. This laser generates 34 ps pulses at a repetition of 8 MHz and spectral width of 30 rim when increased to the highest power. The laser operates on a single-pulse train regime and can be de-chirped as short as 200 fs. The 60 mW output power which can be maintained while operating with low Raman effect is the highest average power achieved for this type of laser in the sub-200 fs regime. The laser becomes unstable due to the strengthening of the Raman-Stokes pulse. Output pulses show great stability in testing.
Energy Scalability of the Dissipative Soliton in an All-Normal-dispersion Fiber Laser with Nonlinear Amplifying Loop Mirror

Abstract:We numerically and experimentally report on a high-energy all-normal-dispersion Yb-doped fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) acting as the mode-locker. Numerical simulations of the dynamic evolution of dissipative solitons in this structure indicate that the position of gain fiber in the loop mirror plays a key role in promoting pulse energy. Without significant Raman scattering effect, pulse trains with energy and average output power of 22 nJ and 191 mW, respectively, whose duration can be de-chirped to 195 fs, were experimentally obtained from the all-PM-fiber cavity. In addition, the multi-pulsing phenomena at different positions of gain fiber in the loop mirror limits the further increasing of the pulse energy. In this paper, both simulation and experiment are in good qualitative agreement, which provides a method for the mode-locked fiber laser with NALM to control and improve the output properties.

Abstract:We demonstrate a nonlinearity optimization method by altering distribution of passive fibers in a dissipative-soliton mode-locked fiber laser to level up output parameters. In the numerical simulation, we found that the passive fiber segment after gain fiber characterizes the highest average B-integral among fiber segments. By reducing the length of this fiber section and keeping the total passive fiber length as constant, the output pulse energy can be effectively scaled up while maintaining a short dechirped pulse duration, resulting in boosting peak power. With this method, 37-nJ pulses are generated from a dissipative-soliton mode-locked cladding pumped ytterbium-doped single-mode fiber laser in the experiment. The pulse can be dechirped to 66 fs with 350 kW peak power. Moreover, the pulse pedestal is suppressed by a vector-dispersion compressor.

Abstract:We report on a femtosecond nonlinear amplification fiber laser system using a vector-dispersion compressor, which consists of a transmission grating pair and multipass cell based Gires-Tournois interferometer mirrors. The mirror is designed with nearly zero group-delay dispersion and large negative third-order dispersion. As a result, the third-order dispersion of the compressor can be adjusted independently to compensate the nonlinear phase shift of amplified pulses to reduce the pulse pedestal. With this scheme, the system outputs 44 fs laser pulses with little wing at 26.6W output average power and 531 nJ pulse energy, corresponding to 10.8MW peak power. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Noise-like pulses (NLP) are extremely sought after in many fields. Here, we experimentally and numerically investigated the generation of noise-like pulses in an all-normal-dispersion fiber laser with weak spectrum filtering. With the insertion of the grating as a tunable spectrum filter, the laser operates at a stable dissipative soliton state with a 3.84 ps duration. Replacing the grating with a mirror, NLPs with double-scale intensity autocorrelation trace is ultimately attained. Numerical simulations are performed in detail and demonstrated that with the absence of a spectrum filter, the stable state cannot be established but form the random pulse cluster. The random pulse cluster achieves dynamic stability with suitable feedback, and the NLP is ultimately generated. The NLP here is directly evolved by the initial noise, and no other states occur during its evolution. These explorations could deepen the understanding of NLP and enrich the complex dynamics of the ANDi ultrafast fiber laser.

Abstract:Nanosecond (similar to 10 ns) laser pulses with high peak power of 8MW and high energy of 100 mJ are reported, which are generated by a cascaded pulsed Yb-doped fiber amplifier system working at a repetition frequency of 10 Hz. The peak power that is higher than the self-focusing threshold for Gaussian beams is achieved for the first time in the fiber lasers. To analyze the selffocusing threshold for multimode lasers in fibers, a novel mode decomposition based on the beam quality measurements is introduced. Based on the mode decomposition and nonlinear laser propagation simulations, the threshold of self-focusing for our case is estimated.

Abstract:We report on an environmentally stable mode-locked all polarization maintaining fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) at a ultralow repetition rate. Experimentally, using different cavity lengths we have achieved stable mode-locking at different repetition rates. By carefully adjusting the length of the total fiber of NALM, we achieve stable broadband pulse trains with a repetition rate as low as 140 kHz. The pulses can be further amplified up to 27 mu J and compressed down to 1.16 ps. The laser system has potential application for industrial application.
Stable noise-like pulse generation from a NALM-based all-PM Tm-doped fiber laser

Abstract:An all-polarization maintaining (PM) noise-like pulse (NLP) generation from a Tm-doped fiber oscillator based on nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) that incorporated with a phase shifter and a chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) is experimentally demonstrated. The 3 dB bandwidth of the output spectrum is 25 nm at the central wavelength of 1950 nm, and the maximum output average power is 13.6 mW with the repetition rate of 3.25 MHz. The noise performances of the NLP are for the first time systematically examined, and it shows an improving tendency with the increasing of the output power. At an integration frequency range from 1 kHz to 1 MHz, the minimum estimated timing jitter and the rms RIN is 139 ps and 0.58%, respectively. In addition, the long-term stable operation of the laser is verified through monitoring the output spectrum and average power.

Abstract:Applications of mode-locked fiber lasers benefit from robust and self-starting mode-locking, spectral tuning, high pulse energy and high average power. All-polarization-maintaining (PM) fiber lasers mode-locked with a phase-biased nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) have been shown to be very robust and reliably self-starting, and provide either spectral tuning or high pulse energy, but not both. We report on a simple method for concurrent spectral tuning and nanojoule-level pulse energy scaling of an all-PM phase-biased NALM mode-locked Yb:fiber laser, which we demonstrate over a 54 nm tuning range, reaching up to 1.67 nJ pulse energy and 126 mW average power. Unlike other laser configurations, our results show that net normal dispersion is not necessary or optimal for scaling the pulse energy of this type of mode-locked fiber laser.

Abstract:Transition from a gain-guided soliton (GGS) to a fully developed noise-like pulse (NLP) is numerically demonstrated in fiber lasers operated in the normal dispersion regime, which explains well the experimental observation of spectrum evolution that the bottom of the averaged spectrum gradually broadens with pump power increasing. Numerical results suggest that the transition could also happen under the condition of cavity linear phase delay bias change with fixed pump power. It is demonstrated that the peak power clamping effect and the normal dispersion are the key factors leading to the spectrum evolution. In addition, intermittent meta-stable states between GGS and NLP can be obtained when the cavity dispersion is chosen at small normal dispersion.

Abstract:Noise-like pulses (NLPs) are relatively long (nanosecond or sub-nanosecond) wave packets exhibiting a fine inner structure of sub-picosecond pulses with varying amplitude and duration. The spectral domain of the NLPs has a wide wavelength envelope that exhibits highly variable wavelength emission intensity. An optical spectrum analyzer provides pseudo-stable, low-coherence, flat, and broadband spectral information of NLP, which then superimposed recording hundreds of thousands of NLP spectra. Therefore, NLPs can be widely applied in optical metrology, low-coherence spectral interferometry, spectral-domain optical coherent tomography, optical sensing and measurement, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy and ablation threshold analysis, micro machining, and supercontinuum. This report mainly introduces some recent achievements in NLP fiber lasers. The research mainly includes the influence of reverse saturable absorption on the formation of NLPs, the generation of wide-spectrum NLP, the splitting of NLP, and the controllable generation of NLPs.

Abstract:We report on a 13.2 W, 474 fs, 31.12 MHz, all-polarization-maintaining (PM), 1560 nm fiber laser system based on the chirped-pulse amplification (CPA). The home-built seed laser with the nonlinear amplified loop mirror (NALM) can deliver two trains of laser pulses. Two stages of cascaded all-PM Er:Yb co-doped fiber (EYDF) amplifiers were employed in scaling up the average power. The corresponding numerical simulation and experimental investigations were implemented in optimizing the power amplification process. To our knowledge, this is the highest output power ever reported for the 1560 nm femtosecond all-PM fiber laser systems.

Abstract:We report the construction of a cascaded fiber amplifier where a 40-μm-core-diameter photonic crystal fiber is utilized in the main amplifier stage. Single-transverse-mode, linearly-polarized, 7.5ns pulses with 1.5mJ energy, 123kW peak power and 10nm spectral bandwidth centered at 1062nm are generated. To our knowledge, the pulse energy we obtain is the highest from 40-μm-core-diameter photonic crystal fibers, and also the highest for long pulses (>1ns) with linear polarization and single transverse mode.

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-normal-dispersion mode-locked fiber laser based on a piece of large-core Yb-doped multi-mode fiber. High order modes are suppressed by coiling the gain fiber to produce large loss for the high modes but low loss for the fundamental mode. Mode-locking is self-starting by exploiting a combination of a grating-aperture based spectral filter with a nonlinear polarization evolution effect. The laser directly delivers 1.1 ps, 107 nJ pulses at a repetition rate of 76.7 MHz, with an average power of up to 8.2 W. The pulses can be compressed externally to 210 fs with a peak power of up to 350 kW.

Abstract:We report a mode-locked high-power all-polarization-maintaining Er/Yb-doped large-mode-area fiber oscillator based on a bias nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM). The oscillator can generate ∼1-nJ femtosecond pulses without dispersion compensation. By inserting a Martinez-type compensator to provide normal dispersion, it can generate >10-nJ picosecond dissipative solitons (DSs). The measured M2 factors are below 1.5, indicating a good beam quality. When the cavity dispersion is tuned to be ∼0.704 ps2, the oscillator can deliver chirped DSs with an average power as high as 690 mW at a repetition rate of 49.86 MHz, corresponding to a pulse energy of ∼13.8 nJ. The pulse after compression has a near Fourier-limited width of ∼2 ps. Successful demonstration of this laser provides a robust scheme for improving the performance of ultrafast fiber lasers in average power and pulse energy.

Abstract:In this manuscript, we demonstrate the generation and real-time dynamics of noise-like pulses (NLPs) in a 1.7 μm ultrafast thulium-doped fiber laser with all-fiber structure. NLPs with a central wavelength of ∼ 1742.5 nm and a 3-dB spectral width of ∼ 10.95 nm could be observed with pulse energy up to 4.19 nJ. The dynamic characteristics of NLPs were explored by using time-stretch dispersive Fourier transformation technology, which shows that the NLPs actually consist of many chaotic small pulse envelopes with random and changeable energies. These experimental results indicate that NLPs are the intrinsic features of fiber lasers and hold significant importance for further academic research, which can contribute to the development and application of 1.7 μm fiber laser in fields such as biomedicine and short-range remote sensing.

Abstract:A pulsating soliton exists in various passively mode-locked fiber lasers. Versatile categories of pulsating solitons have been investigated in a steady regime. However, the formation dynamics of pulsating solitons have not been fully revealed. Herein, we experimentally captured both single pulsating soliton and two pulsating soliton formation processes in an all-normal-dispersion laser. With the help of the time-stretch dispersion Fourier transform technique, the real-time temporal and spectral evolutions of pulsating solitons, during the buildup process, were investigated. It is found that pulsation directly derives from the background noise. In addition, both types of pulsations experience several characteristic stages, including an unstable Q -switch, spectral shaping, broadening, oscillating, and narrowing, which might be induced by the transient non-balance between the gain and loss of the cavity. We anticipate that the work in this Letter can improve the understanding of pulsating behaviors and bring new insights into the dynamic phenomenon of nonlinear optical systems.
