Abstract:This work comprehensively studied the effect of layer charge density of montmorillonite (MMT) and the dosage of Octadecyl Trimethyl Ammonium Chloride (OTAC) on the micro-structure and gel property of the prepared OTAC-MMT. The results show that when the layer charge density of MMT is low, the OTAC horizontally distribute in the inter-layers, the No (N in OTAC) respectively coordinates with Ot (O in tetrahedron) and Ow (O in water) at 4.5 Å away from the central axis, with the increase of layer charge density, the coordination strength of No and Ot increases, the arrangement of OTAC in inter-layers changes from layered to inclined winding, and under this condition, both the apparent viscosity and colloidal ratio of OTAC-MMT in xylene significantly decrease. With the increase of the dosage of OTAC, the arrangement of OTAC changes from layered to inclined winding, and finally evolves into a stacking arrangement. When the dosage of OTAC is less than 1.0CEC, the apparent viscosity and colloidal ratio increase gradually, when the dosage is 1.25CEC, the apparent viscosity reaches the maximum value, however, the colloidal rate continues to rise, with the further increase of the dosage of OTAC, the colloidal rate can rise to 100 %.
