Abstract:Because of the high index contrast, current silicon photonics based optical phased arrays cannot achieve small beam divergence and large field-of-view simultaneously without increasing fabrication complexity. To resolve the dilemma, we propose an ultra-long waveguide grating antenna formed by placing subwavelength segments within the evanescent field of a conventional strip waveguide. Bound state in the continuum effect is leveraged to suppress the sidewall emission. As a proof of concept, we theoretically demonstrated a millimeter-long through-etched waveguide grating antenna with a divergence angle of 0.081° and a feature size compatible with current silicon photonics foundries.
Ultra-Long Grating Emitters For Optical Phased Array Leveraging Subwavelength Structures

Abstract:Silicon photonics optical phased arrays have been studied intensively in recent years. As the divergence angle of the light beam is inversely proportional to the size of optical antennas, developing long grating emitters is crucial to the implementation of large aperture optical phased arrays. However, because of the high refractive index contrast between silicon and cladding materials on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform and fabrication limitation, the grating strength of a conventional grating is so strong that the light can only propagate a short distance within the grating. Because of the capability to engineer the macro optical properties of materials, subwavelength structures have become important building blocks in integrated photonics. In this paper, we propose subwavelength silicon segments as a promising approach to form long grating emitters. Subwavelength segments are placed a distanced away from a conventional waveguide to assure that they only interact with the evanescent wave of the guided mode. The grating strength can be tailored to any values of interest by optimizing the dimensions and positions of subwavelength segments. As a proof-of-concept, a millimeter-long, through-etched grating and an apodized grating are designed and fabricated, which shows a divergence angle of 0.081 degrees and 0.079 degrees.

Abstract:Silicon photonic optical phased arrays are promising solutions for solid-state LIDAR. But the nonlinear absorption significantly saturates the optical power in the waveguides at 1.5-mu m wavelengths. Besides, the high refractive index contrast of silicon grating exhibits a strong diffraction strength of the antenna, which results in a limited aperture of the device. These ultimately place a limit on the detection accuracy and reach. Here, a shallow etched two-dimensional subwavelength grating structure is proposed to improve the efficiency and aperture of the waveguide antenna. A reduction of diffraction strength is achieved via nanohole structure instead of conventional grating lines. Thus, a millimeter-long optical antenna is demonstrated with a peak efficiency of 71%. The far-field diffracted beam width of 0.035 degrees and vertical field-of-view of 17.5 degrees are achieved within 100 nm wavelengths range from 1.95 mu m to 2.05 mu m. The operation at 2-mu m waveband also guarantees better eye-safety and significantly reduces the nonlinear absorption in silicon waveguide compared with conventional 1.5-mu m band.

Abstract:The development of millimeter-wave phased array based on the digital beamforming architecture needs to overcome a physical-level challenge due to the contradiction between the massively integrated TR devices and the compact volume for thermal dissipation. In this work, we demonstrate an analog beamforming solution based on a reconfigurable Fresnel-zone-plate (RFZP) antenna for 28-GHz phased array. The proposed RFZP including 16x8 unit cells based on active frequency selective surface (FSS) with varactor diodes to implement a continuous 180 degrees phase tunability. The measured scan ranges up to +/- 50 degrees and +/- 30 degrees at horizontal plane and vertical plane, respectively. The proposed RFZP antenna is an attractive solution for millimeter-wave beamforming.
High sensitivity and large scanning range optical antennas enabled by multi-casting ridge-waveguide subwavelength structure arrays

Abstract:With the rapid development of large-scale integrated photonics, optical phased array (OPA) is an effective way to realize highly integrated, stable and low-cost beam control system. Achieving a large field of view (FOV) in the longitudinal direction without increasing fabrication cost and system complexity is still a significant challenge in OPA antennas. Here, a high sensitivity and large scanning range antenna based on subwavelength structure array is proposed to enhance the longitudinal scanning and free-space radiating efficiency by using the ridge-waveguide structure and backward-emitting. A millimeter-long grating antenna with a far-field beam divergence of 0.13° and a wavelength sensitivity of 0.237°/nm is experimentally demonstrated. Furthermore, by using different sideband periods, we introduce a multi-casting grating antenna with a large scanning range up to 42.6°. The proposed devices show significant improvement in longitudinal wavelength sensitivity compared with the typical waveguide grating antennas.

Abstract:We demonstrate a 63-channel grating-lobe-free optical phased array, in which end-fire antennas were fabricated with a pitch of 775 nm to eliminate grating lobe. Phase mismatch was configured to suppress the optical crosstalk in the dense waveguides. Two-dimensional beam steering within 16°× 2.7° were presented by thermal phase shifting and wavelength tuning.

Abstract:We propose a highly directional waveguide grating antenna for an optical phased array, achieving high directionality of more than 97% by interleaving the trenches with different etching depths in the silicon nitride layer, and adopting a multilayered structure. Meanwhile, the multilayered structure re-duces the perturbation strength, which enables a centimeter-scale radiation length. The beam-steering range is 13.2 degrees, with a wavelength bandwidth of 100 nm. The 1-dB bandwidth of the grating is 305 nm. The multilayered grating structure has a large tolerance to the fabrication variation and is compatible with CMOS fabrication techniques.

Abstract:We compare the performance of silicon-based arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) with star couplers of Rowland and Confocal configurations, respectively, for both TE and TM polarizations. The star coupler with Rowland configuration and constant projection period for phased array waveguides on the tangent line at the grating pole shows sufficiently small aberration for all output channels of AWGs, achieving a better spectral performance compared to the Confocal configuration. The spectral performance of AWGs is also highly dependent on phase errors resulting from fabrication imperfections which are unavoidable in current fabrication technology, hence it is of significant importance to make the phase region of AWGs as small as possible. Using the optimized star coupler configuration, ultracompact large channel spacing AWGs employing a single bend with a different radius for each waveguide in the phase array and a S-shaped waveguide array, respectively, are fabricated and compared, together with high resolution (de)multiplexers utilizing the cascade of (N + 1) x (N + 1) AWGs and polarization combiner-rotator/rotator-splitter. High resolution ultracompact spectrometers using bidirectional (N + 1) x (N + 1) AWGs operating at TE and TM polarizations are also designed and fabricated. All the experimental results indicate that a smaller footprint for the phase region of AWGs contributes to an improved performance in their spectral responses. We also discuss the ways to reduce the size of phase region and suggest that decreasing the pitch of adjacent output waveguides on the imaging plane is an effective way. This paper provides design considerations for silicon-based AWGs towards various applications such as wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and spectroscopic analysis.

Abstract:An electronically steerable dielectric helical antenna phased array for millimeter wave applications is designed in this paper. The phased array consists of three dielectric helical antenna units, a coaxial probe feed port and two grounding ports with tunable capacitor. Its center frequency is 29.7 GHz, effective axial ratio bandwidth is 660 MHz, peek gain is 10.3 dBi, radiation efficiency is over 90% In addition, the phased array has beam scanning function of +/- 20 degrees at the center frequency. The simulation results show that the electronically steerable phased dielectric helical antenna array can be used in millimeter wave wireless communication system.

Abstract:In this article, we proposed a novel miniaturized phased array aperture antenna using a voltage‐controllable ferroelectric material with high dielectric constant. This antenna system combines the phase shifters and the radiating elements in a single structure, that could significantly simplify the complexity and the cost of the conventional phased array antenna systems. Abstract:A grating lobe-free silicon optical phased array with large field of view is demonstrated. Antennas with periodically bending modulation are spaced at half wavelength or less. The experimental results show that the crosstalk between adjacent waveguides is negligible at 1550 nm wavelength. Additionally, to reduce the optical reflection caused by the sudden change of refractive index at the output antenna of the phased array, tapered antennas are added to the output end face so that more light will be coupled into the free space. The fabricated optical phased array shows a field of view of 120° without any grating lobes.

Abstract:A novel structure of a subwavelength surface optical antenna for optical phased array is proposed in this paper. An asymmetric vertical grating structure is applied to achieve high emission efficiency (73% at 1550 nm). Optical antennas with large fabrication tolerances can also maintain a wide working bandwidth of 1 dB between 1350 and 1850 nm. The far-field scanning characteristics of 16-channel optical phased array are investigated in this study by employing the proposed antenna. The results show that the background suppression without considering side lobes caused by the antenna arrangement is −24.5 dB when the phase difference is 0 and when the scan range is as large as ±14.8° × 73.6°.

Abstract:We propose an on-chip Si photonics optical phased array based on a serial grating design which eliminates the use of directional couplers in previous designs. It significantly reduces overall phased array size especially when the number of the antenna is small which is often demanded in practice. The simulation results show our design reduces overall phased array size, increases optical power utilization while maintains comparable far field performance.

Abstract:Waveguide grating antenna with compact size and high diffraction efficiency remains a significant challenge in beam steering applications for integrated Optical Phased Arrays (OPA). Traditional waveguide grating antennas have large footprints, limiting antenna arrays' density. High diffraction efficiency is essential for effective signal transmission, making it a crucial aspect of antenna design. Optical antennas need higher diffraction efficiency, compact size, and broader field of view to achieve this. The proposed work aims to design a single-etch grating antenna on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform that emits light off-chip. The methodology combines the initial grating antenna designed using Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations and optimizes it with a genetic algorithm. The proposed design uses a transverse spliced grating, Bragg reflectors, and bottom reflector to achieve an impressive upward diffraction efficiency of nearly 88% operating in C -band centered at 1550 nm. The size of the proposed antenna is 2.8 μm and offers a wide far-field beam width of 38 ° x 136 °. This work enables new advancements in integrated waveguide grating antenna development, with potential applications in free-space optical interconnects and on-chip optical phased arrays.

An Efficient Compact Blazed Grating Antenna for Optical Phased Arrays

Abstract:Phased arrays are vital in communication systems and have received significant interest in the field of optoelectronics and photonics, enabling a wide range of applications such as LiDAR, holography, wireless communication, etc. In this work, we present a blazed grating antenna that is optimized to have upward radiation efficiency as high as 80% with a compact footprint of 3.5 {\mu}m \times 2 {\mu}m at an operational wavelength of 1.55 {\mu}m. Our numerical investigations demonstrate that this antenna in a 64 \times 64 phased array configuration is capable of producing desired far-field radiation patterns. Additionally, our antenna possesses a low side lobe level of -9.7 dB and a negligible reflection efficiency of under 1%, making it an attractive candidate for integrated optical phased arrays.

Abstract:Integrated optical antennas are key components for on-chip light detection and ranging technology (LIDAR). In order to achieve a highly collimated far field with reduced beam divergence, antenna lengths on the order of several millimeters are required. In the high-index contrast silicon photonics platform, achieving such long antennas typically demands weakly modulated gratings with lithographic minimum feature sizes below 10 nm. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a new, to the best of our knowledge, strategy to make long antennas in silicon waveguides using a metamaterial subwavelength grating (SWG) waveguide core loaded with a lateral periodic array of radiative elements. The mode field confinement is controlled by the SWG duty cycle, and the delocalized propagating mode overlaps with the periodic perturbations. With this arrangement, weak antenna radiation strength can be achieved while maintaining a minimum feature size as large as 80 nm. Using this strategy, we experimentally demonstrate a 2-millimeter-long, single-etched subwavelength-engineered optical antenna on a conventional 220 nm SOI platform, presenting a measured far-field beam divergence of 0.1° and a wavelength scanning sensitivity of 0.13°/nm.

Abstract:In this work, a compact sub-wavelength-pitch silicon waveguide array with low crosstalk is proposed and analyzed. The crosstalk is suppressed by periodic silicon nano-blocks symmetrically arranged along the silicon strip waveguides. The silicon nano-blocks are properly designed to work in the resonant region as a high-reflection boundary so that the evanescent fields of the silicon waveguide, which directly contribute to the coupling between waveguides, can be truncated. Meanwhile, the nano-blocks periodically perturb the evanescent fields to form a weak-radiating grating, leading to a millimeter-long effective radiation length required for highly directive optical phased arrays. Simulation results show that the crosstalk between the waveguides in the proposed design is at least 10 dB lower than traditional waveguide array with identical sizes within the 1500-1590 nm bandwidth. Furthermore, the proposed design achieves an effective radiation length up to 1.47 mm, resulting in a theoretical narrow beam width of 0.052°. Combining both the low crosstalk and the long effective radiating length, our design offers a promising platform for high-performance two-dimensional scanning optical phased array with a large field of view and a narrow beam width.
