Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy of aerosols is associated with large signal variability and lower sampling rates. In this study, aerosol ablation and signal variability associated with aerosol size were studied by size-resolved spectral and image analyses of submicron sized particles using a high-density stream of monodisperse liquid aerosols. The rise in the particle size from 0.16 mm to 0.96 mm for a similar aerosol mass concentration showed a size-dependent intensity increase. The initial increase in the analyte emission was due to the enhanced analyte concentration inside the plasma volume, whereas for larger aerosols, the stronger ablation of the larger liquid particles resulted in elevated emission intensity. The electron number density increased from 1.6 x 10(17) cm(-3) to 2.6 x 10(17) cm(-3) with an increase in the particle size; however, the temporal delay of number density was faster for the larger particles due to higher plasma-ambience interaction. The analyte signal variation reduced to 3%, calculated using ensemble averaging, for particles larger than 0.5 mu m. Plasma image analysis showed that the signal variation stemmed from inhomogeneity in the initial breakdown process and grew with the increasing delay. The variation in the plasma image area increased from 8% to 16% for 0.16 mu m particles and 12% to 28% for 0.96 mm particles at the respective delays of 0 and 3 ms. Thus, two different sources of signal variability were determined. For smaller particles, the major source of variation was the variable sample scarcity inside the plasma, whereas for larger particles, plasma variation contributed more to the analyte signal variability from the beginning.

Abstract:Suspension plasma spray (SPS) is an emerging coating process for making surfaces with superior properties. In this process, in-flight spray particle characteristics such as size, velocity, and temperature have a direct influence on the properties of the deposited coatings. Accordingly, online diagnostic tools to characterize the in-flight particles in the SPS are sought by research laboratories and industrial centers for process optimization and control. However, small particle size, high temperature, and radiation of the plasma make it challenging to carry out these measurements. In this study, we used a light diffraction (LD) approach to measure online the size of in-flight particles sprayed from a well-predefined size distribution. Laser beam refraction by the hot plasma/gas jet is one of the main sources of noise for such size measurement. Successful measurements were achieved by shielding the measurement section and filtering the plasma radiation to reduce the influence of the laser refraction and plasma radiation. Results showed that the LD method has the potential to be used to monitor online the size distribution of in-flight particles in the SPS process.

Abstract:A new approach has been developed for making near-real-time measurement of elemental composition of aerosols using plasma spectroscopy. The method allows preconcentration of miniscule particle mass (pg to ng) directly from the sampled aerosol stream through electrostatic deposition of charged particles (30-900 nm) onto a flat-tip microneedle electrode. The collected material is subsequently ablated from the electrode and monitored by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. Atomic emission spectra were collected using a broadband spectrometer with a wavelength range of 200-980 nm. A single-sensor delay time of 1.3 μs was used in the spectrometer for all elements to allow simultaneous measurement of multiple elements. The system was calibrated for various elements including Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Na, and Ti. The absolute mass detection limits for these elements were experimentally determined and found to be in the range of 0.018-5 ng. The electrostatic collection technique has many advantages over other substrate-based methods involving aerosol collection on a filter or its focused deposition using an aerodynamic lens. Because the particle mass is collected over a very small area that is smaller than the spatial extent of the laser-induced plasma, the entire mass is available for analysis. This considerably improves reliability of the calibration and enhances measurement accuracy and precision. Further, the aerosol collection technique involves very low pressure drop, thereby allowing higher sample flow rates with much smaller pumps-a desirable feature for portable instrumentation. Higher flow rates also make it feasible to measure trace element concentrations at part per trillion levels. Detection limits in the range of 18-670 ng m-3 can be achieved for most of the elements studied at a flow rate of 1.5 L min-1 with sampling times of 5 min.

An Investigation of Particle Injection and Resulting In-Flight Particle Behavior During Air Plasma Spraying

Abstract:In this article we present our studies on the role of particle injection on the in-flight particle characteristics in an external orthogonally injected air plasma spray system. The influence of carrier gas on the in-flight particle state has been investigated, experimentally and using simulation, for Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) thermal spray powder processed in an Ar-H2 plasma. Diagnostic tools such as IPP and SPT have been used to measure the plume characteristics and ensemble temperature while DPV-2000 has been used to measure the distributions of individual particle characteristics such as temperature, velocity and size, at the point of the maximum particle flux and at various points (square grid) in the plume cross-section. Three-dimensional simulations have been performed for the cases presented in the experiments. Specifically, the effects of carrier gas flow rate on the in-flight particle characteristics were studied at multiple stand-off distances. Simulation results agree well with the experimental observation that the particle velocity and temperature will increase with the plume angle and then decrease after reaching a maxima for a given process parameter combination and stand-off distance. This maxima has been observed at the same plume angle for different process parameter combinations. The results of this study are currently being used to 'optimize' the particle injection and trajectory, which enables better understanding of the influence of plasma forming and stabilizing parameters (gas flows and arc current) on the in-flight particle behavior.

Abstract:Signal stability is a fundamental requirement for an analytical spectroscopic technique. An auxiliary-flow based chamber is presented for emission signal stability in aerosol laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). The performance of the designed chamber was evaluated with the traditional aerosol LIBS scheme. Factors influencing optical emission including laser energy and particle size were carefully considered. Both intra-experiment and inter-experiment results exhibited excellent short-term and long-term stability of emission signals with the novel sampling scheme while traditional cross-chamber suffered 15% and 40% intensity decrease, respectively. The systematic air analysis before and after aerosol experiment determined that major cause of signal decrease in the cross-chamber was degraded optical transmission due to aerosol contamination on optical path which was eliminated in the auxiliary flow-based chamber. The proposed scheme can be used for the analysis of diverse aerosols types in various optical emission based analytical techniques.
Study to reduce laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy measurement uncertainty using plasma characteristic parameters

Abstract:Using standard brass alloy samples, an approach to reduce the laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy measurement uncertainty was tested and proved. Two important parameters for plasma characterization, the plasma temperature and the electron density, were applied to minimize the signal uncertainties due to uncontrollable experimental parameter variations. Results show that for the pulse-to-pulse analysis, the signal fluctuations can be significantly reduced by utilizing the plasma characteristic information. The major source for the single pulse fluctuations is the redistribution of the characteristic line at different temperatures according to the Boltzmann distribution under LTE. The change of the degree of ionization also contributes to the signal fluctuations. For the multi-pulse analysis, due to the nonlinear relationship between the plasma temperature and the line intensity, it is not applicable to utilize the Boltzmann distribution to reduce the influences of the plasma properties. However, normalization with the combination of the whole spectrum area and the ratio between the ion and atom number density of the same element can further increase the measurement accuracy.

Abstract:Abstract Instabilities and fluctuations of the plasma jet in a thermal spray process can have a significant influence on the particle in-flight temperatures and velocities, affecting the properties of resulting plasma-sprayed coatings. Presented in this paper is a novel method for capturing the effects particles are exposed to in the plasma spraying process. High-speed camera images of a plasma jet generated by a cascaded three-cathode plasma generator (TriplexPro-210) were recorded for varying operating conditions. The images are processed using the inverse Abel transform. This transformation accounts for the fact that the images represent a 2D projection of the 3D jet and generates more accurate intensity values that the sprayed particles would experience. These images are then combined with particle tracks resulting from CFD simulations of the plasma jet to match the particles path with the recorded plasma jet. This new method allows a precise description of the plasma intensity experienced by individual particles with a high temporal resolution. The results show a high sensitivity of the method, even detecting the influence on the particles of the plasma jet originating from the cascaded triple arc plasma generator, which is considered as rather stable.

Abstract:Relatively large measurement uncertainty severely hindered wide application for laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), therefore it is of great importance to understand the mechanism of signal uncertainty generation, including initiation and propagation. It has been found that the fluctuation of plasma morphology was the main reason for signal uncertainty. However, it still remains unclear what mechanism leads to laser-induced plasma morphology fluctuation. In the present work, we employed three fast-imaging cameras to capture three successive plasma images from a same laser-induced Titanium alloy plasma, which enables us to understand more clearly of the plasma evolution process especially for the early plasma evolution stage when plasma and surrounding gases interact drastically. Seen from the images, the plasma experienced an increasing morphological fluctuation as delay time increased, transforming from a “stable plasma” before the delay time of 100 ns to a “fluctuating plasma” after the delay time of 300 ns. Notably, the frontier part of plasma showed a significant downward motion from the delay time of 150 ns to 200 ns and crashed with the lower part of the plasma, making the plasma flatter and later even splitting the plasma into two parts, which was considered as a critical process for the transformation of “stable plasma” to “unstable plasma”. By calculating the correlation coefficient of plasma image pairs at successive delay times, it was found that the higher the similarity between two plasma at early stage, the more similar at later stage; this implied that the tiny plasma fluctuation earlier than the critical delay time (150–200 ns) was amplified, causing a large plasma fluctuation at the later stage as well as LIBS measurement uncertainty. The initiation of slight fluctuation was linked with Rayleigh-Taylor Instability (RTI) due to the drastic material interpenetration at the plasma-ambient gas interface at earlier stage (before 50 ns). That is, the uncertainty generation of LIBS was proposed as: plasma morphology fluctuation was inevitably trigged by RTI at the early stage and the tiny fluctuation was amplified by the back pressed downward process of plasma frontier material, leading to severe morphology fluctuation as well as LIBS signal uncertainty.

Abstract:An experimental study on the packing thickness (PT) dependent plasma emission caused by laser ablating thin-layer microgranular samples in air was conducted using three sets of size-selected copper grains (median size d50 = 53 μm, 72 μm, and 100 μm, respectively). For each size-selected case, the PT parameter was tuned from 0.15 to 1.00 mm through varying the amount of grains packed into a vessel with a steel bottom wall and the emission spectra of laser-induced plasma were measured at various PT. It is found that there is a striking threshold phenomenon in the measured behavior of PT-dependent plasma emission. Specifically, when PT is less than a threshold PTth, the emission intensity exhibits an exponential decreasing with incremental thickness; however, when it exceeds PTth, the emission intensity becomes almost constant. It is also found that the PTth slightly depends on grain size but the ratio of PTth to d50 seems to be size independent. Combining the mechanical fundamentals of granular materials, we interpreted the findings by considering a PT-dependent effect of the vessel's bottom on the formation circumstance of a laser-induced plasma. This work has practical significance in assessing a threshold thickness above which laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, as an analytical technique to quantify elements embedded in microgranular materials, is viable regardless of PT difference.

Abstract:— Two techniques for multielement analysis of liquid-droplet aerosol are compared, which are based on the spectral analysis of the radiation of a laser plasma generated in a laser breakdown (LIBS) or during laser pulse filamentation in a liquid droplet aerosol (R-FIBS). A liquid-droplet aerosol containing Na solution is used. It is shown that there are optimal delay times of the start of signal recording relative to the start of plasma generation, at which the signal-to-noise ratio is maximal, for both techniques. The dependence of the signal-to-noise ratio is derived for different laser radiation focusing deep into a liquid-droplet cloud for LIBS. The Na detection limits are determined for both methods.

Abstract:Abstract The present work represented to the new idea techinque of imaging material through X-ray emitted from laser produced plasma, here, the plasma intensity in uv-visible region spectrum was measurment from the interaction of the 1.06μm of nedumium-glass laser pulse duration of energy 4J, with five target laser: Al, Cu, C, Pb and Stainless Steel(St.St). Astudy of the X-ray emission intensity as a function of laser produced plasma density and surrouding pressure has been a complished using a high sensitive photon detection and counting technique assoicated with an X-ray intensifying screen whose function is based on X-ray florescence. the stainless –stell target was found to have the highest plasma emission intensity, and as a result it has higher X-ray emission intensity. the results show that the plasma X-ray emission intensity is increased with decreasing surrouding pressure, while this emission intensity is increased with increasing the laser power density. In order to study the spatial scanning of transmitted plasma X-ray intensity and study the factors affecting the x-ray imaging process, a special designed Cu specimen of varying thickness was used. The spatial scanning of transmitted x-ray emission intensity shows a comparative picture to the Cu specimen from the recorded x-ray intensity, in which it decreases at thicker region acorrding to lamberts absorbtion law.
Laser-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy of Liquid Solutions: a Comparative Study on the Forms of Liquid Surface and Liquid Aerosol.

Abstract:Liquid surface and liquid aerosol as the traditional liquid forms for laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP), respectively, have been used to analyze chromium (Cr) and cadmium (Cd) elements using LIBS in a liquid solution. The spectral differences, the effects of laser energy and laser frequency, the accumulated number of laser pulses, gate delay time, and the quantitative analyses for a liquid surface and a liquid aerosol were compared. The results showed that the liquid surface demonstrated a lower plasma threshold, higher optical emission intensity, and higher single-to-noise ratio. Moreover, the relative standard deviations (RSDs) of the intensities of the liquid aerosol are better than those of the liquid surface. Furthermore, the results of the quantitative analyses of Cr I 357.86 nm and Cd I 361.05 nm of the liquid surface are close to those of the liquid aerosol. The limit of detections of Cr and Cd of the liquid surface were 2.764 and 86.869 μg/mL, which were close to those of liquid aerosol, 2.847 μg/mL of Cr and 97.635 μg/mL of Cd. For both the liquid surface and liquid aerosol, the coefficient of determination R2 of the calibration curve for Cr and Cd were above 0.99, and the average RSDs of Cr and Cd of the liquid surface were 0.027 and 0.054, which were similar to the 0.020 of Cr and 0.042 of Cd of the liquid aerosol. These results suggest that both the liquid surface and aerosol have similar detection abilities for water quality monitoring.

Abstract:The work is concerned with the effect of a spatially fluctuating heating of Al 2 O 3 particles with diameters of 5–120 μm during a plasma spray process. A plasma jet is generated in a mixture of Ar (40 NLPM) and H 2 (14 NLPM) and in pure Ar at an electric current of 600 A. The tracing of the injected particles in the plume region of the plasma jets is considered in the framework of a three-dimensional model taking into account a turbulent fluid flow. It is shown that the heat source for the injected particles exhibits a well pronounced spatially fluctuating structure due to the enhancement of the thermal conductivity resulting from dissociation and ionization of the molecular gas in the temperature range of 2500–4000 K and 13,000–14,000 K, respectively. During their travel towards the substrate, the particles are therefore repeatedly heated in the gas mixture in contrast to the case of pure argon. Particles injected in the gas mixture reach the substrate with a higher average temperature and velocity.

Acoustic characteristics of laser-induced plasmas from the forming dynamics perspective

Abstract:The acoustic signal has demonstrated its capabilities in assisting laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) measurements. In this study, the acoustic characteristics of laser-induced plasmas (LIPs) under different levels of energy deposition were analyzed, and their correlation with LIP forming dynamics was investigated. In the deposited energy space, two zones in the acoustic pressure and duration were observed, featuring a clear transition point in 100 mJ. The analysis based on self-emission spectra and images suggested that this transition is a result of the change in plasma forming dynamics. Above 100mJ, the plasma temperature and electron density were saturated; thus, any further increase in deposited energy only contributes to the plasma size. In this regime, the acoustic wave from the significantly elongated plasma no longer satisfied the ideal spherical assumption. The observation was also strengthened by the analysis in the frequency domain. Moreover, the correlation between acoustic and radiation signals was also changed significantly with plasma forming dynamics. This study offers a systematic analysis of LIP acoustic signals on the deposited energy space. The potential of using acoustic measurement to interpret the plasma forming dynamics was demonstrated, which could be beneficial for the successful implementations of acoustic-aided LIBS.

Abstract:The creation and characterization of laser-generated plasma are affected by laser irradiance, representing significant phenomena in many applications. The present work studied the spectroscopy diagnostic of laser irradiance effect on Zn plasma features created in the air by a Q-switched Nd: YAG laser at the fundamental wavelength (1064nm). The major plasma parameters (electron temperature and electron density) have been measured using the Boltzmann plot and the Stark broadening methods. The value of electrons temperature ranged from 6138–6067 K, and the electron density in the range of 1.4×1018 to 2×1018 cm-3, for laser irradiance range from 2.1 to 4.8×108 (W/cm2). The McWhirter criterion for preserving a local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) condition is confirmed in this study. Furthermore, other fundamental plasma parameters, such as Debye length (λD), number of particles in Debye sphere (ND), and plasma frequency (ωp), were measured. We found that all plasma parameters are affected by laser intensity.

Abstract:To understand the effect of in-flight particle behavior so as to improve the coating quality, an accurate description of transport phenomena of particles is essential. For supersonic plasma spraying (SAPS), a three-dimensional computational model is developed to describe the plasma jet coupled with the injection of carrier gas and particles. The heating and melting processes of single particle were also studied by a numerical method. The model treats the particles in the flow as discrete Lagrangian entities that exchange mass, momentum, and energy with the gas. The governing equations for the Reynolds averaged flow parameters were solved using FVM method and the continuity and momentum equations are coupled using the PISO algorithm. The velocity and temperature of the in-flight particles were measured by SprayWatch-2i, and the morphology of particles was observed by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Numerical and experimental results showed that, the velocity and temperature of the in-flight particles were reached maximum at the spraying distance of 80–100mm. Particles were melted and broken into small child particles by plasma jet. The small child particles were accelerated to higher in-flight velocity by gas flow. Particles were completely melted when the spraying distance about of 95mm at the time of 0.35ms. Numerical results were compared with the experimental measurements and a good agreement has been achieved.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser filament-induced plasma spectroscopy (FIPS) demonstrates great potentials in the remote sensing for identifying atmospheric pollutant molecules. Due to the widespread aerosols in atmosphere, the remote detection based on FIPS would be affected from both the excitation and the propagation of fingerprint fluorescence, which still remain elusive. Here the physical model of filament-induced aerosol fluorescence is established to reveal the combined effect of Mie scattering and amplification spontaneous emission, which is then proved by the experimental results, the dependence of the backward fluorescence on the interaction length between filament and aerosols. These findings provide an insight into the complicated aerosol effect in the overall physical process of FIPS including propagation, excitation and emission, paving the way to its practical application in atmospheric remote sensing.

Abstract:We present temporal information obtained by mass spectrometry techniques about the evolution of plasmas generated by laser filamentation in air. The experimental setup used in this work allowed us to study not only the dynamics of the filament core but also of the energy reservoir that surrounds it. Furthermore, valuable insights about the chemistry of such systems like the photofragmentation and/or formation of molecules were obtained. The interpretation of the experimental results are supported by PIC (particle in cell) simulations.

Abstract:Laser-generated aerosols in helium, argon and nitrogen were directly compared using a nitrogen microwave inductively coupled plasma in combination with a mass spectrometer. An increased surface darkening of the sample was observed during ablation in nitrogen, suggesting a more pronounced particle deposition in comparison to helium, but only 30 % lower sensitivities were obtained for nitrogen. Crater depth measurements proved that these variations were not the consequence of a difference in ablation rate (271 ± 17 nm/pulse for He vs. 267 ± 12 nm/pulse for N 2 ). Particle size measurements and electron microscopy images indicated that the aerosol generated in nitrogen or argon tends to form smaller agglomerates in comparison to helium. This dependence in agglomeration however appeared to be dependent on the ablation cell used. Furthermore, the fluence of the 193 nm laser system used for the experiments significantly influenced the temporal stability of the signals (e.g. 238 U + / 232 Th + ). Finally, the quantification capabilities of nitrogen as ablation environment and carrier gas were studied and compared to helium generated aerosols transported in nitrogen. A selection of samples (NIST SRM 612, USGS BCR-2G, USGS GSD-1G and GSE-1G) were quantified using NIST SRM 610 as external standard. The potential of nitrogen as an alternative carrier gas was highlighted with deviations from the reference values calculated between -13 % and +16 % in comparison to the deviations between -15 % and +17 % obtained with helium in a cylindrical ablation cell for the majority of the elements in the different reference materials analyzed.
