Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a promising multi-elemental analysis technique and has the advantage of rapid measurement with minimal sample preparation. However, due to the short lifetime of laser-induced plasma and the very small ablation mass, the detection sensitivity of LIBS is low and the signal uncertainty is relatively high. These issues severely hinder the large-scale application and commercialization of LIBS. A flame-assisted plasma modulation method is used to reduce signal uncertainty and simultaneously enhance signal intensity, based on the uncertainty generation mechanism of LIBS. During the plasma evolution, the ambient high-temperature combustion gases can provide an environment with high local sound speed, which reduces the crash between the lower part of plasma and the back-pressed frontier material. Therefore, the generated plasma morphology is stable and the signal uncertainty is lowered. Moreover, a hotter surrounding gas environment can benefit sample ablation mass and reduce heat loss of the plasma, therefore leading to higher signal intensity. The flame-assisted plasma modulation method is tested on brass samples. It reduces the relative standard deviation (RSD) from 10% to 6% approximately and shows an enhancement factor of about 2 for Cu spectral lines, which shows that the proposed method is effective to improve the raw signal quality for LIBS. Detailed analysis of the mechanisms for uncertainty reduction and intensity enhancement was further investigated for a deeper understanding.

Abstract:A single-beam-splitting approach was used to enhance the signal intensity of LIBS under the extreme conditions of laser beam grazing of the surface of non-flat samples. Time-resolved spectra show that the laser-ablated plasma presents a stronger spectral intensity and a slower plasma decay in the split beam mode because of the higher laser irradiance. The temporal evolutions of signal enhancement factors indicate that the enhancement effect first rises and then drops with delay time and the maximum enhancement factor of Al plasma comes later than that of Cu plasma under the same laser energy. The mechanisms behind it are discussed. It is also found that the electron density exhibits a faster decay with delay time in the split beam mode, mainly due to the faster plasma expansion. And a slower increase of electron density with laser energy is observed in the split beam mode because of the plasma shielding effect.

Abstract:Abstract The plasma shielding effect is one of the major weaknesses of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) as it causes non-linearity in signal strength. Although LIBS is typically carried out in constant laser energy, this non-linearity causes a reduction in sensitivity. In this work, we systematically examine laser-induced plasma, formed by two different excitation source modes, i.e. single pulse (SP)-excitation and single-beam-splitting double-pulse (SBS-DP)-excitation over Zr-2.5% Nb alloy. The two most important plasma parameters influencing the emission line intensity, plasma temperature ( T e ) and electron density ( N e ) were studied and compared for both modes of laser excitation. Comparison of the results conclusively demonstrates that due to the splitting of the laser energy in the SBS-DP mode, the plasma shielding effect is significantly reduced. The reduced plasma shielding translates to an increased laser–sample coupling under SBS-DP mode. Temporal imaging of the total intensity of the laser-induced plasma in both excitation modes was also studied. The study shows how the plasma shielding effect can be reduced to improve the analytical quality of the LIBS methodology.

Abstract:Spark discharge has been proved to be an effective way to enhance the LIBS signal while moderate cylindrical confinement is able to increase the signal repeatability with limited signal enhancement effects. In the present work, these two methods were combined together not only to improve the pulse-to-pulse signal repeatability but also to simultaneously and significantly enhance the signal as well as SNR. Plasma images showed that the confinement stabilized the morphology of the plasma, especially for the discharge assisted process, which explained the improvement of the signal repeatability.

Abstract:The simplicity and low-cost way to improve qualitative and quantitative analytical performance has always been a crucial concern for laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), and many scientists have been engaged in this evolving research direction. In this review, we investigated an update on recent developments in light-field modulated operation in LIBS. It covered a brief description of LIBS, optical polarization, and beam shaping. Here, the optical polarization is divided into laser beam polarization and plasma polarization. In addition, the methodology and development of light-field modulated LIBS were summarized and discussed. Finally, the existing problems with light-field modulated LIBS were presented, along with some of their own insights and the future direction of their development. This review will provide a guideline for LIBS researchers with basic knowledge, which is very useful in the signal optimization of LIBS research and applications.

Abstract:This work presents progress in experimental investigations of laser-induced breakdown in the vicinity of micro-particles and the effects on optical emission for aerosol sensing applications. Micro-particles are trapped and constrained, or levitated, using an electrodynamic balance in a double-ring, double-disc configuration. With the ability to precisely position the focal point of a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser relative to the micro-particle, various laser-particle and plasma-particle configurations may be studied. This work concentrates on plasma parameter measurement in the direct irradiation configuration. For the first time, stereoscopic hyperspectral Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) is used to quantify the spatial and view-angle variation of optical emission and electron temperature and electron number density. Furthermore, implementation of a simultaneous stereo high-speed imaging system is shown to provide information on subsequent particle motion that has proved useful in evaluating the breakdown event.

Abstract:The relatively low repeatability of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) severely hinders its wide commercialization. In the present work, we investigate the optimization of LIBS system for repeatability improvement for both signal generation (plasma evolution) and signal collection. Timeintegrated spectra and images were obtained under different laser energies and focal lengths to investigate the optimum configuration for stable plasmas and repeatable signals. Using our experimental setup, the optimum conditions were found to be a laser energy of 250 mJ and a focus length of 100 mm. A stable and homogeneous plasma with the largest hot core area in the optimum condition yielded the most stable LIBS signal. Time-resolved images showed that the rebounding processes through the air plasma evolution caused the relative standard deviation (RSD) to increase with laser energies of > 250 mJ. In addition, the emission collection was improved by using a concave spherical mirror. The line intensities doubled as their RSDs decreased by approximately 25%. When the signal generation and collection were optimized simultaneously, the pulse-to-pulse RSDs were reduced to approximately 3% for O(I), N(I), and H(I) lines, which are better than the RSDs reported for solid samples and showed great potential for LIBS quantitative analysis by gasifying the solid or liquid samples.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a promising technique for in situ chemical analysis in ocean observation. Extensive experimental investigations were carried out to understand the plasma-ambient pressure interaction mechanism in a liquid environment. Results shows that plasma temperature and electron density increase with increasing pressure. Under elevated pressure conditions, the electron density increases at the late plasma stage. Abstract:Dual-beam laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is more sensitive than conventional single-pulse LIBS. A combined configuration of Nd:YAG and CW- CO2 lasers is used to improve the emission intensity of LIBS. The plasma of Al sample was observed under CW-CO2 laser and Nd:YAG laser excitation. The enhancement radiation was obtained from dual-beam LIBS rather than single LIBS, which indicated that IR preheating can cause significant enhancement of plasma. The effects of CO2 laser spot size, laser irradiation time and laser power on plasma emission intensity were investigated. And on this basis, the variation of electron temperature and electron density of plasma with delay time is obtained.

Abstract:Plasma morphology fluctuation is the primary source for signal uncertainty of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). This study has investigated the plasma morphology fluctuation due to stochastic particle ablation in LIBS particle flow analysis. K-means clustering was employed to analyze a large set of spectral data, identifying four plasma patterns: weak, moderate, air-prominent, and extreme plasma. As the excitation probabilities of four plasma patterns differed, the analytical signal statistic concerning the particle ablation deviated from the Gaussian distribution but aligned with the generalized extreme value distribution. For each plasma pattern, the pulse-to-pulse plasma morphology fluctuation in terms of plasma length and center position was investigated by time-resolved imaging. The dominant particle ablation process was evaluated through particle distribution images. Weak plasma with the most fluctuated plasma length and moderate plasma with the most fluctuated center position contributed to considerable signal uncertainty. Air-prominent and extreme plasma presented more repeatable signals due to less plasma morphology fluctuation. The pulse-to-pulse relative standard deviations of particle emission for the weak, moderate, air-prominent, and extreme plasma were 60.68%, 41.75%, 38.62%, and 22.20%, respectively. All these results suggest a plasma modulation pathway for particle flow analysis.

Abstract:Collinear long and short dual-pulse laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (DP-LIBS) was employed to clarify the emission characteristics from laser-induced plasma. The plasma was sustained and became stable by the long pulse-width laser with the pulse width of 60 μs under free running (FR) conditions as an external energy source. Comparing the measurement results of stainless steel in air using single-pulse LIBS (SP-LIBS) and DP-LIBS, the emission intensity was markedly enhanced using DP-LIBS. The temperature of plasma induced by DP-LIBS was maintained at a higher temperature under different gate delay time and short pulse-width laser power conditions compared with those measured using short SP-LIBS. Moreover, the variation rates of plasma temperatures measured using DP-LIBS were also lower. The superior detection ability was verified by the measurement of aluminum sample in water. The spectra were clearly detected using DP-LIBS, whereas it cannot be identified using SP-LIBS of short and long pulse widths. The effects of gate delay time and short pulse-width laser power were also discussed. These results demonstrate the feasibility and enhanced detection ability of the proposed collinear long and short DP-LIBS method.

Abstract:A collinear long-short dual-pulse laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (DP-LIBS) method was employed to enhance and stabilize the laser-induced plasma from steel sample. The long-pulse-width laser beam with the pulse width of 60μs was generated by a Nd: YAG laser which was operated at FR (free running) mode. The comparative experiments were carried out between single pulse LIBS (SP-LIBS) and long-short DP-LIBS. The recorded results showed that the emission intensities and the temperature of plasma were enhanced by long-short DP-LIBS. The plasma images showed that the plasma was bigger and had a longer lifetime in long-short DP-LIBS situation. Through the calculation of time-resolved plasma temperature and intensity ratio, it can be concluded that the plasma was stabilized by the long-pulse-width laser beam. The long-short DP-LIBS method also generated the stable plasma condition from the samples with different initial temperatures, which overcame the difficulties of LIBS in the online measurement for steel production line.

Abstract:Improved spectral resolutions were achieved in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) through generation of high-temperature and low-density plasmas. A first pulse from a KrF excimer laser was used to produce particles by perpendicularly irradiating targets in air. A second pulse from a 532 nm Nd:YAG laser was introduced parallel to the sample surface to reablate the particles. Optical scattering from the first-pulse plasmas was imaged to elucidate particle formation in the plasmas. Narrower line widths (full width at half maximums: FWHMs) and weaker self-absorption were observed from time-integrated LIBS spectra. Estimation of plasma temperatures and densities indicates that high temperature and low density can be achieved simultaneously in plasmas to improve LIBS resolutions.

Abstract:Abstract In the field of dual-pulse laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (DP-LIBS) research, the pursuit for determining pulse interval and other parameters quickly and conveniently in order to achieve optimal spectral signal enhancement is paramount. To aid researchers in identifying the optimal signal enhancement conditions and more accurately interpreting the underlying signal enhancement mechanisms, theoretical simulations of the spatiotemporal processes of coaxial DP-LIBS plasma inducing have been established in this work. By means of a model based on laser ablation and two-dimensional axisymmetric fluid dynamics, plasma evolution during aluminum-magnesium alloy laser ablation under single pulse and coaxial dual pulse excitations have been simulated. The influence of factors such as delay time, laser fluence, plasma temperature, particle number density, etc., on the DP-LIBS spectral signals are investigated. Under pulse intervals ranging from 50 to 1500 ns, the time evolution of spectral line intensity, dual-pulse emission enhancement relative to the single-pulse results, laser irradiance, spatial distribution of plasma temperature and species number density, as well as laser irradiance shielded by plasma have been obtained. The study indicates that the main reason behind the radiation signal enhancement in coaxial DP-LIBS induced plasma is attributed to increased species number density and plasma temperature caused by the second laser, and it is inferred that the shielding effect of the plasma mainly occurs in the boundary layer of the stagnation point flow over the target surface. This research provides a theoretical basis for experimental research, parameter optimization, and signal enhancement tracing in DP-LIBS.

Abstract:It is still challenging to apply laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to slurry on-stream analysis due to the moisture in slurry samples causing the low spectral intensity. In this work, a high-frequency pulsed fiber laser was proposed to quickly remove the moisture in slurry samples at the detection point for the first time. The spectral emission intensity and line broadening due Stark effect were investigated for the dual-pulse of fiber laser assisted LIBS (FL-LIBS) mode and signal-pulse LIBS (SP-LIBS) mode. It found that the spectral intensities of Fe and Ca elements were enhanced, while the matrix elements of H and O elements were decreased. Moreover, the currently available spectroscopic diagnostics of plasma, such Boltzmann plot have been used to measure the plasma temperature, while the hydrogen line broadening have been used in the characterization of electron densities. It reveals the type of higher-temperature and lower-density plasma was obtained. The experimental results demonstrated that the fiber laser had the potential to improve LIBS signal intensity and spectral resolution for aqueous matrix samples.

In order to improve the detection sensitivity of LIBS, many methods have been proposed to improve the spectral intensity of LIBS. It has been proved that the intensity of femtosecond LIBS spectra of metal can be enhanced by using circularly polarized laser as excitation source. In this paper, the effect of polarization of laser beam on emission intensity of nanosecond LIB S was investigated. The spectral intensity of nanosecond LIB S of brass was enhanced with circularly polarized laser excited.

Abstract:In our previous work, we found that there was great potential to improve the pulse-to-pulse signal repeatability using a moderate cylindrical cavity confinement. However, the improvement was achieved only with certain experimental parameters; while under other conditions, there was no improvement or even worse repeatability. In the present work, the experimental configuration was redesigned and unexpected uncertainty from the variation of the laser and cavity alignment and the laser ablated aerosols were avoided. With these two improvements, we demonstrated that the cavity can always increase the signal repeatability. In addition, image taken by ICCD verified that the confinement improved the stability of the plasma morphology as expected.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been shown to be a useful technique in elemental analysis with many advantages including rapid analysis, simultaneous multi-element detection, in-situ or stand-off analysis capability. To evaluate the potential application of LIBS for quantitative analysis, some experimental investigations into the laser induced plasma process were undertaken with brass alloy sample, in the laboratory. The plasma was generated by a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser operating at 532 nm with pulse width of 10ns and repeat frequency of 10 Hz. The LIBS signal was coupled to the spectrometer and recorded with OMA system and a PMT in conjunction with a computer controlled Boxcar integrator. The temporal characteristic of the plasma was investigated with the emission line of Cu atom at 324.75 nm, 327.40 nm and the emission line of Zn atom at 330.25 mn. The optimum delay time range for 324.75 nm from Cu atoms and 330.25 nm from Zn atoms is from 300 to 600 ns. The self-absorption of Cu atomic lines at 324.75 run and 327.40 nm can be reduced by increasing the laser energy and recording the spectra in the early stage of the plasma formation. The experimental results are effective for improving the slope of calibration curve.
