Abstract:In the past few decades, significant progress in block copolymer self-assembly has been achieved in many fields, and with the development of nanoscience and nanotechnology, more and more complex situations need block copolymer self-assembly based nanoplatforms having more complex structures for specific multimodal or multiplexed applications. Through the combination of emulsification and self-assembly of the block copolymer, different materials with exotic architectures and functions could be combined within an entity, such as controlled vesicles, Janus particles, and composite particles which are more like ideal nanoplatforms. Various designs can show their different desired properties depending upon the application situation, including molecular delivery, surfactants, and multicolor encoding. This review will provide a complete summary of the optimization and the synthesis method for the recently designed emulsion confined block copolymer assemblies, and also the challenges and limitations this method faces, and the potential solutions in this field.

Abstract:The polymerization of amphiphilic self-assemblies is a promising method to synthesize nano-structured materials with novel properties. These materials have many attractive features for their application in biomedical area and materials science, such as catalysis, separation, surface modification, and therapeutics areas. A general review on the polymerization of lipids and surfactant self-assemblies to amphiphilic self-assemblies is given in this paper with 49 references. The polymerization and the subsequently resulted structure of lipids in different morphologies are summarized. The polymerization of polymerizable surfactants (surfmers) in emulsion and liquid crystalline phases are also discussed. The potential application of new nano-porous materials is briefly described.

Abstract:Block copolymers can self-assemble into a variety of shaped nanoparticles and ordered nanomaterials either in solution or in bulk,which has great potential applications in areas of nanomaterial and nanotechnology.For further development of these areas,functionalization of the self-assembled nanoparticles was eagerly wanted.To mediate the structures,shapes and functions of these nanoparticles,well-defined functional block copolymers for self-assembly need to be synthesized with controlled polymerization.In this review,development on self-assembly of block copolymers is summarized based on related research progress in this group.Reactive block copolymers were synthesized by controlled radical polymerization first,then shaped core-shell polymer nanoparticles were prepared by self-assembly of reactive block copolymers either in solution or in bulk.After chemical or physical crosslinking,the morphologies of the nanoparticles can be fixed and then novel methods for preparation of core-shell polymer nanoparticless were obtained.

Abstract:Recently the crystallization-driven self-assembly of block copolymers into semicrystalline micelles in the selective solvent has been paid increasing attention due to the good controllability. In this paper we first review some factors controlling the morphology and size of the semicrystalline micelles of block copolymers, including solvent quality, structure of block copolymers, and crystallization temperature. The living growth of semicrystalline micelles with time and formation of "block co-micelles" using micelles as building blocks are also introduced. Finally, currently existing problems and outlook in this field are discussed.

Abstract:We report a general solid-phase synthesis strategy for a novel class of DNA block copolymer amphiphiles. The assembled spherical micelle structures exhibit recognition properties defined by their DNA sequences and can be used to build higher-ordered structures through hybridization with materials that possess complementary DNA. This work is an important step toward creating DNA modified structures that can act as phase transfer agents and carriers of nanovesicles.

Abstract:Amphiphilic copolymers that can assemble into core-shell micelles in aqueous media have potential application as drug carriers for controlled-release. In this article an amphiphilic triblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(lactic acid)-block-poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PEG-b-PLA-b-PHEMA) was synthesized by ring-opening reaction and atom transfer radical polymerization. The polymers were characterized by H-1 NMR, FT-IR and gel permeation chromatography. In aqueous solution, PEG-b-PLA-b-PHEMA can self-assemble into micelles. Characterized by DLS and TEM, micelles are found to be spherical with uniform size. Large numbers of hydroxyl groups on the PHEMA chain offer reaction sites for subsequent functional modification, which make it a promising platforms for drug delivery systems.

Abstract:Micelles formed through the aggregation of amphiphilic block copolymers are ideal drug nanocarriers. Despite their importance in nanomedicine, the detailed mechanisms through which micelles form and copolymers encapsulate the target nanomaterials are unclear. Here, using in situ liquid cell transmission electron microscopy imaging, we capture both the dynamics of micelle formation and their encapsulation of gold nanoparticles (NPs) in an aqueous solution. Our observations reveal that the amphiphilic block copolymers aggregate and rearrange to form a micelle with a hydrophobic and rigid core, surrounded by a corona of hydrophilic blocks that extend into the solution. These micelles are stable against coalescence, and once mature, they do not merge. We also show that the encapsulation of hydrophobic NPs is a self-limiting process, which occurs through gradual adsorption of block copolymers; the growth of a polymeric shell around the NPs, shielding them from water, ceases when the NPs are fully covered by the adsorbed copolymers. The insights from these observations are of fundamental importance for the design of biocompatible soft materials.

Abstract:The self-assembly of polymeric micelles and colloidal dispersions into intricate structures represents a transformative approach in contrast to traditional fabrication methods for creating new functional materials. Despite remarkable advancements in the field, there exists substantial potential for further progress. In the past two decades, scientists have innovated and applied sophisticated methods for synthesizing nanocrystals of diverse geometries and polymeric materials with varying molecular characteristics. These synthetic pathways play a pivotal role in the facile fabrication of a multitude of nanostructures, which also greatly facilitates our understanding of the governing principles of meso and nano object self-assembly. This review focuses on the complex packing structures of block copolymer micelles and colloidal particles, with a particular emphasis on the Frank-Kasper phase. A comprehensive exploration of the recent theoretical and experimental advances in this interdisciplinary field is presented. By drawing parallels between the self-organized formation of both hard particles and soft micelles, this review aims to provide a fundamental understanding of the underlying physics and chemistry that contribute to the emergence of complex packing behavior. This knowledge is instrumental in the design and engineering of structures tailored to specific applications, fostering further innovation in the realm of nanomaterials.

Abstract:In this work, an amphiphilic block copolymer (PS-b-PSN2+) composed of PS and PS-based polymeric diazonium salts was synthesized. The diblock precursor polymer (PS-b-PSNHBoc) consisting of PS block and Boc-protected poly(p-vinylaniline) block was prepared by RAFT polymerization. After the deprotection and diazotization, an amphiphilic block copolymer with diazonium salt pendant groups was obtained. The block ionomer would then self-assemble into nano-sized micelles in selective solvents, which was verified by TEM and dynamic light scattering measurements. The diazonium groups in the corona of the polymeric micelles could not only serve as the major role for colloidal stability but also allow an efficient post-modification. Azobenzene moieties could be easily introduced into the self-assembled micelles by azo coupling reaction between the polymeric diazonium salts and N,N-dimethylaniline.

Abstract:“Self-assembled nanostructure” is a prevalent phrase in chemistry in recent years. Blockcopolymers in a selective solvent can be self-assembled to micelles. Polymer micelles may eventuallyprove to have important technological applications. We have studied interpolymer complexationthrough specific interactions for years. However, the complexation usually does not lead to well-defined structures. Our new approach is: when polymer A is dissolved in a good solvent and added toa solution containing polymer B in a nonsolvent for A, the precipitation of A can be prevented due tothe specific interaction between A and B, and instead, micelles with A core and B corona are formed.Similarly, it is also possible to prepare “graft copolymer” between A and B in a common solvent viahydrogen bonding first, then mix it with a selective solvent to form A-B micelles. This kind of micellediffers from the conventional block copolymer micelles, in which the corona and the core arechemically bonded. This paper summarizes our major recent results on this new approach to severaldifferent kinds of systems, either in organic or in aqueous media.

Abstract:Nanoparticle morphology significantly affects the application of nanometer-scale materials. Understanding nanoparticle formation mechanisms and directing morphological control in nanoparticle self-assembly processes have received wide attention. Herein, a series of brush-like amphiphilic liquid crystalline block copolymers, PChEMA m- b-POEGMA n, containing cholesteryl mesogens with different hydrophobic/hydrophilic block ratios were designed and synthesized. The self-assembly behaviors of the resulting PChEMA m- b-POEGMA n block copolymers in different solvents (tetrahydrofuran/H2O, 1,4-dioxane/H2O, and N, N-dimethylformamide) were investigated in detail. Desirable micellar aggregates with well-organized architectures, including short cylindrical micelles, nanofibers, fringed platelets, and ellipsoidal vesicles with smectic micellar cores, were observed in 1,4-dioxane/H2O with an increasing hydrophobic block ratio. Although both amphiphilicity and smectic order governed the self-assembly, these two factors were differently balanced in the different solvents. This unique supramolecular system provides a new strategy for the design of advanced functional nanomaterials with tunable morphologies.

Abstract:Shape amphiphiles with distinct shapes and amphiphilic properties can be used as fundamental building blocks in the fabrication of novel structures and advanced materials. In this research synthesis and self-assembly of monotethered single-chain nanoparticle shape amphiphiles are reported. Poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)-block-polystyrene (PDMAEMA-b-PS) was synthesized by two-step reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The PDMAEMA blocks were intramolecularly cross-linked by 1,4-diiodobutane (DIB) at significantly low concentrations, and PS-tethered PDMAEMA single-chain nanoparticles were prepared. Gel permeation chromatograph, H-1 NMR and transmission electron microscopy results all indicated successful synthesis of the structures. The controlled self-assembly of the shape amphiphiles in selective solvents was investigated. Depending on the size of the single-chain nanoparticles, the shape amphiphiles self-assemble into strawberry-like micelles, a structure with single-chain nanoparticles in the corona and PS in core, or vesicles in aqueous solutions. Similar to the self-assembled structures in aqueous solution, the morphology of aggregates in methanol changes from micellar structure to vesicular structure with the decrease of the PDMAEMA single-chain nanoparticles size. In cyclohexane, the shape amphiphiles self-assemble into bunchy micelles with single-chain nanoparticles in the cores and linear PS in the coronae.

Abstract:Control of polymer assemblies in solution is of great importance to determine the properties and applications of these polymer nanostructures. We report a novel co-self-assembly strategy to control the self-assembly outcomes of a micelle-forming amphiphilic block copolymer (BCP) of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate] (PTMSPMA), PEO114-b-PTMSPMA228. With a reactive and hydrophobic additive tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), the assembly nanostructures of PEO114-b-PTMSPMA228 are tunable. The swelling of the PTMSPMA block by hydrophobic TEOS increases the hydrophobic-to-hydrophilic ratio that enables a continuous morphological evolution from spherical micelles to vesicles and eventually to large compound vesicles. TEOS that co-hydrolyzes with the PTMSPMA block can further stabilize and fix these hybrid nanostructures. Abstract:At the end of the last century, Professor Jiang Ming et al. succeeded in fabricating regular nanostructures through localizing interactions in the systems of polymer complexes. Through continuous expansion and deepening of this principle and method, a new strategy of macromolecular self-assembly was established. This review summarizes recent developments and applications of non-covalently connected micelles (NCCMs), including: Introducing of new driving forces such as supramolecular interactions to drive the formation of NCCMs, providing the resultant NCCMs with new features and functions; Applying the principle to the self-assembly of biological macromolecules, thereby developing an entirely green route to self-assembly of macromolecules; Also, through localizing covalent crosslinking reaction of one block of a diblock copolymer, we realized micellization of the block copolymer in its common solvent induced by the crosslinking reaction, resulting in highly efficient fabrication of core-stabilized micelles as well as a new pathway for controlling the kinetics of polymer micellization, the structures and the properties of the polymeric micelles.

Abstract:Block copolymer-nanoparticle composite nanomaterials provide exciting opportunities as they may display distinctive properties from constituents that are desired in applications including biomedicine, photoelectric materials, and catalytic materials, etc. Block copolymers can self-assemble to various nanoscale structures. The successful distribution of nanoparticles in a particular location of the block copolymer matrix can improve the functional properties of nanoparticles. In this review, the methods for fabricating block copolymer-nonaparticle composite nanomaterials are introduced. Experimental and theoretical progress in the description of these nanostructured block copolymer based hybrid materials is represented. Furthermore, precise assembly and localization of nanoparticle in block copolymer assemblies are of great importance in realizing the formation of nano-hybrids with high performance. The properties and applications of the nanocomposites depend not only on those of individual building blocks but also on their spatial distribution within different morphological aggregates at different length scales. This review also discussed the effect of nanoparticle size, shape and surface chemistry on the selective localization of nanoparticle within block copolymer aggregates. Those factors manipulate the balance between enthalpic and entropic contributions, which provides an opportunity to precisely control the spatial distribution of nanoparticles in block copolymer aggregates. In the end, the self-assembly of block copolymer-nanoparticles in theoretical simulation is introduced. Theoretical and computational simulations offer a unique approach not only to study the evolution and formation of nanostructures,but also to investigate structure-property relationship of hybrid nanocomposites.

Abstract:Colloidal molecules constructed from polymers and nanoparticles (NPs) have recently emerged as a novel class of building blocks for assembling functional hybrid materials. Particularly, self-assembly of amphiphilic block copolymer (BCP)-tethered NPs (BNPs) has shown great promise in the nanoscale design of functional hybrid materials. On the one hand, structurally the BNPs can be considered as molecular equivalents that are capable of self-assembly at multiple hierarchical levels. On the other hand, the assembly of BNPs shows significant differences from molecular assembly due to their large dimension, complex geometry, and multi-scale interactions involved in the assembly process. The manipulation of BCPs localized near the surface of the NPs offers an effective tool for engineering the interactions between NPs and hence the complexity of NP assembly. In this Feature Article, recent progresses on the self-assembly of BNPs into functional materials are summarized. First, major strategies for assembling amphiphilic BNPs are highlighted. Secondly, the application of hybrid nanostructures (e.g., vesicles) assembled from BNPs in the field of biomedical imaging and delivery is discussed. Finally, current challenges and perspectives at this frontier are outlined.

Abstract:<p>Since the foundation of macromolecular science by Staudinger, advances in polymer chemistry have unveiled enormous avenues for controlling chemical structures at the molecular scale. As a typical self-assembling polymer covalently linked by chemically distinct polymer blocks, amphiphilic block copolymers (BCPs) spontaneously form a variety of nanostructures with diverse functional applications, especially in the fields of nanomedicine and biomaterials. Self-assembling processes could occur at single chain level (i.e., intrachain folding) or involve multiple chains with similar and dissimilar chemical structures (i.e., interchain association). This review article discusses recent trends concerning solution self-assembly of BCPs, including the formation of inverted mesophases, self-folding into single-chain nanoparticles (SCNPs), compartmentalized nanoparticles with sophisticated functions, and nanostructures of amphiphilic copolymers with precise chain lengths and predetermined sequences, by highlighting selected examples.</p>
