Abstract:Miniemulsion polymerization with an amphiphilic poly(acrylic acid)- block-polystyrene reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer agent as a surfactant and polymerization mediator is used to synthesize highly uniform nanocapsules. The nanocapsules with uniform structures, which include particle size, shell thickness, and shape symmetry, could be achieved by the post-addition of a small amount of sodium dodecyl sulfate. Although the solid particles seem unavoidable, the 'pure' uniform core-shell structures are easily collected by centrifugation.

Abstract:We report an unprecedented assembling performance of amide-containing, homo-structured poly(N-alkylacrylamide)s, through which they can assemble into discrete spherical particles with size ranging from tens of nanometres to several micrometres. For a specific polymer, a facile control over topology and scale of assembled structures can be accomplished via solvent conditions. Assembling using appropriate solvent gives rise to capsule-like assemblies. The molecular structure of polymers, such as the side chain chemistry and topology display striking impact on the size and morphology of resulting assemblies. These polymers might function as novel model systems for investigating complex functions performed by amide moieties in proteins, while this assembling offers a simple, facile but powerful and cost-effective manufacturing route for nano- or microstructured materials that may find great potential in diverse applications varying from cosmetics, drug delivery, nanomedicine, to biotechnology.

Abstract:A series of pH-sensitive and thermosensitive amphiphilic pentablock copolymers, PNIPAM(x)-b-P(tBA-co-AA)(90)-bPPO(36)-b-P(tBA-co-AA)(90)-PNIPAM(x) (x-DH) with different lengths x of PNIPAM blocks (x = 58, 95, and 111) and various degrees of hydrolysis of PtBA blocks (DH approximate to 10, 60, and 100%), were prepared and self-assembled into micelles in dilute aqueous solutions. By dynamic light scattering (DLS) and UV-vis spectrophotometry characterizations, at pH = 2, x-DH micelle aqueous solutions show an irreversible thermosensitive process due to the hydrogen (H) bonding between PNIPAM blocks and protonated AA groups. At pH = 12, x-DH micelle aqueous solutions show a reversible thermosensitive process when the DH is low (10%) but are thermoinsensitive when the DH is high (similar to 60 and 100%) due to the electrostatic repulsion between deprotonated AA groups. The morphologies and structures of x-DH micelles are directly visualized by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) at 20 degrees C. Under acid conditions, with increasing hydrophilicity, the transformation of x-DH micelles from large compound micelles (LCMs) with a bent corona, through LCMs with extended corona, core-corona irregularities, core-shell-corona spheres, coexistence of core-shell-corona spheres and core-corona cylinders, core-corona cylinders, and coexistence of core-corona spheres and core-corona cylinders, to core-corona spheres is identified. Under alkaline conditions, the deprotonated AA groups introduce electrostatic repulsion into micelles, and four nanostructures of x-DH micelles, i.e., LCMs with an uneven surface and inhomogeneous core, core-corona spheres, core-corona cylinders, and core-shell-corona spheres, are observed.

Abstract:A series of linear amphiphilic pentablock terpolymer PAAx-b-PS48-b-PEO46-b-PS48-b-PAAx (AxS48O46S48Ax) with various lengths x of the PAA block (x = 15, 40, 60, and 90) were synthesized via a two-step atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using Br-poly(ethylene oxide)-Br (Br-PEO46-Br) as the macroinitiator, styrene (St) as the first monomer, and tert-butyl acrylate (tBA) as the second monomer, followed with the hydrolysis of PtBA blocks. The AxS48O46S48Ax pentablock terpolymers formed micelles in dilute aqueous solution, of which the morphologies were dependent on the length x of the PAA block. Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and zeta potential measurement were employed to investigate the morphologies, chain structures, size, and size distribution of the obtained micelles. The morphology of AxS48O46S48Ax micelles changed from spherical vesicles with ordered porous membranes to long double nanotubes, then to long nanotubes with inner modulated nanotubes or short nanotubes, and finally, to spherical micelles or large compound vesicles with spherical micelles inside when x increased from 15 to 90. The hydrophobic PS blocks formed the walls of vesicles and nanotubes as well as the core of spherical micelles. The hydrophilic PEO and PAA block chains were located on the surfaces of vesicle membranes, nanotubes, and spherical micelles. The PAA block chains were partially ionized, leading to the negative zeta potential of AxS48O46S48Ax micelles in dilute aqueous solutions.

Abstract:We report a general solid-phase synthesis strategy for a novel class of DNA block copolymer amphiphiles. The assembled spherical micelle structures exhibit recognition properties defined by their DNA sequences and can be used to build higher-ordered structures through hybridization with materials that possess complementary DNA. This work is an important step toward creating DNA modified structures that can act as phase transfer agents and carriers of nanovesicles.

Abstract:A series of linear thermosensitive amphiphilic pentablock terpolymers PNIPAM(x)-b-PtBA(90)-b-PPO36-b-PtBA(90)-b-PNIPAM(x) (N(x)T(90)o(36)T(90)N(x)) with various lengths x of PNIPAM block (x = 111, 107, 95, 58, 33, and 26) were synthesized via a two-step atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using modified poly(propylene oxide) (PPO36) as the macroinitiator, tert-butyl acrylate (tBA) as the first monomer, and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) as the second monomer. The NxT90O36T90Nx pentablock terpolymers form micelles in dilute aqueous solution, whose structure and morphology are dependent on the length x of PNIPAM block and solution temperature. At 14 degrees C, below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of PNIPAM block, the morphology of NxT90O36T90Nx micelles changes from core corona spherical micelles with homogeneous hydrophobic core to rodlike micelles, core-shell-corona spherical micelles with clear boundaries, core shell corona spherical micelles with blurry boundaries, and finally large compound spherical micelles with embedded hydrophilic chains in the hydrophobic region when x decreases from 111 to 26. This morphology change might be attributed to the different stretching factors of hydrophobic PPO and PtBA blocks in the micelles, which varied differently with length x of PNIPAM block and hence resulted in the change of compatibility of the two hydrophobic blocks. A scaling relationship between the length L-0 of hydrophilic corona and the length x of PNIPAM block is found to be L-0 similar to x(0.77 +/- 0.08), which falls in the range 0.5-0.86 theoretically predicted for the micelles of diblock copolymers. The size of hydrophobic regions increases with decreasing x. At 60 degrees C above the LCST of PNIPAM block, all NxT90O36T90Nx pentablock terpolymers form spherical micelles with uniform structure and size distribution in aqueous solution regardless of the length x of PNIPAM block.

Abstract:The amphiphilic reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer(RAFT) agent with multi-carboxylic acid groups was used as the surfactant precursor to prepare the miniemulsion of styrene and paraffin by chemical shearing method. It was found that the sub-micrometer particles could be prepared by chemical shearing, and the compositions and structures of the RAFT agents had significant influence on the formation of miniemulsions. The poly(AAm-b-Stn)RAFT and poly(MAAm-co-Stn)RAFT showed better emulsifying ability. The well-defined nanocapsules of paraffin(core-structure nanocapsule particles) could be obtained using the two RAFT agents by interfacial miniemulsion polymerization, and the polymerization was more stable using the first RAFT.

Abstract:Biocompatible polymersomes are prepared from amphiphilic block copolypeptoids with aggregation-induced emission, where the hydrophobic block P(TPE-NAG) is a tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-modified poly(N-allylglycine) and the hydrophilic block is polysarcosine. These nanoparticles are non-cytotoxic and show strong fluorescence emission in aqueous solution.

Abstract:In this work, an amphiphilic block copolymer (PS-b-PSN2+) composed of PS and PS-based polymeric diazonium salts was synthesized. The diblock precursor polymer (PS-b-PSNHBoc) consisting of PS block and Boc-protected poly(p-vinylaniline) block was prepared by RAFT polymerization. After the deprotection and diazotization, an amphiphilic block copolymer with diazonium salt pendant groups was obtained. The block ionomer would then self-assemble into nano-sized micelles in selective solvents, which was verified by TEM and dynamic light scattering measurements. The diazonium groups in the corona of the polymeric micelles could not only serve as the major role for colloidal stability but also allow an efficient post-modification. Azobenzene moieties could be easily introduced into the self-assembled micelles by azo coupling reaction between the polymeric diazonium salts and N,N-dimethylaniline.

Abstract:We present a facile approach toward straightforward synthesis of Janus nanoparticles (NPs) of poly(4-vinylpyridine)-based block copolymers by solvent evaporation induced assembly within emulsion droplets. Formation of the Janus NPs is arisen from the synergistic effect between solvent selectivity and interfacial selectivity. This method is robust without the requisites of narrow molecular weight distribution and specific range of block fraction of the copolymers. Janus NPs can also be achieved from mixtures of copolymers, whose aspect size ratio and thus Janus balance are finely tunable. The Janus NPs are capable to self-assemble into ordered superstructures either onto substrates or in dispersions, whose morphology relies on Janus balance.

Abstract:We report on a robust approach to the size-selective and template-free synthesis of asymmetrically functionalized ultrasmall (<4 nm) gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) stably anchored with a single amphiphilic triblock copolymer chain per NP. Directed NP self-assembly in aqueous solution can be facilely accomplished to afford organic/inorganic hybrid micelles, vesicles, rods, and large compound micelles by taking advantage of the rich microphase separation behavior of the as-synthesized AuNP hybrid amphiphilic triblock copolymers, PEO-AuNP-PS, which act as the polymer metal polymer analogue of conventional amphiphilic triblock copolymers. Factors affecting the size-selective fabrication and self-assembly characteristics and the time-dependent morphological evolution of NP assemblies were thoroughly explored.

Abstract:We present the synthesis and self-assembly behavior of a new semi-fluorinated amphiphilic triblock copolymer. A series of perfluorocyclobutyl aryl ether-based amphiphilic ABA triblock copolymer containing hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) segment as the middle block were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). ATRP of 4-(4'-p-tolyloxyperfluorocyclobutoxy)benzyl methacrylate was initiated by PEG-based bifunctional macroinitiators with different molecular weights to obtain the desired copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (M-w/M-n <= 1.30) and the number of perfluorocyclobutyl linkage can be tuned by the feed ratio and the conversion of the fluorine-containing methacrylic monomer. The critical micelle concentrations of these amphiphilic ABA triblock copolymers in aqueous media were determined by fluorescence probe technique. Abstract:Biocompatible amphiphilic nanoparticles (NPs) with tunable particle morphology and surface property are important for their applications as functional materials. However, previously developed methods to prepare amphiphilic NPs generally involve several steps, especially an additional step for surface modification, greatly hindering their largescale production and widespread applications. Here, a versatile one-step strategy is developed to prepare biocompatible amphiphilic dimer NPs with tunable particle morphology and surface property. The amphiphilic dimer NPs, which consist of a hydrophobic shellac bulb and a hydrophilic poly(lactic acid) (PLA) bulb with PLA-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) on the bulb surface, are prepared in a single step by controlled co-precipitation and self-assembly. Amphiphilic PLA-PEG/shellac dimer NPs demonstrate excellent tunability in particle morphology, thus showing good performances in controlling the interfacial curvature and emulsion type. In addition, temperature-responsive PLA-poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM)/shellac dimer NPs are prepared following the same method and emulsions stabilized by them show temperature-triggered response. The applications of PLA-PEG-folic acid (FA)/shellac dimer NPs for drug delivery have also been demonstrated, which show a very good performance. The strategy of preparing the dimer NPs is green, scalable, facile and versatile, which provides a good platform for the design of dimer NPs with tunable particle morphology and surface property for diverse applications.
Controlled Nanoparticles Formation by Self-Assembly of Novel Amphiphilic Polyphosphazenes with Poly (N-Isopropylacrylamide) and Ethyl Glycinate As Side Groups

Abstract:Novel amphiphilic graft polyphosphazenes (PNIPAm/EtGly-PPPs) bearing poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) as a hydrophilic segment and ethyl glycinate (EtGly) as a hydrophobic group were synthesized via ring-opening polymerization and subsequent substitution reaction. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of copolymers was investigated by turbidity method using UV–Vis spectroscopy. Copolymers show their LCSTs in the range of 18.5–33°C, depending on the mole ratio of the substituents. The self-assembly characteristics of copolymers in aqueous solution was studied by using fluorescence technique, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and TEM. The critical association concentration (CAC) of copolymers varied from 0.112 to 0.0309g/L, was related with the mole ratio of PNIPAm to EtGly. The TEM images showed self-assembled nanoparticles with a spherical shape at about 30°C, while network-like aggregates were observed for copolymer with high PNIPAm content at relatively low temperature. The particle size of nanoparticles, depending on copolymer compositions, was in the range of 80–900nm at 25°C. These copolymers may be used as injectable drug carriers for the delivery of hydrophobic compounds.

Abstract:Control of polymer assemblies in solution is of great importance to determine the properties and applications of these polymer nanostructures. We report a novel co-self-assembly strategy to control the self-assembly outcomes of a micelle-forming amphiphilic block copolymer (BCP) of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate] (PTMSPMA), PEO114-b-PTMSPMA228. With a reactive and hydrophobic additive tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), the assembly nanostructures of PEO114-b-PTMSPMA228 are tunable. The swelling of the PTMSPMA block by hydrophobic TEOS increases the hydrophobic-to-hydrophilic ratio that enables a continuous morphological evolution from spherical micelles to vesicles and eventually to large compound vesicles. TEOS that co-hydrolyzes with the PTMSPMA block can further stabilize and fix these hybrid nanostructures. Abstract:Amphiphilic copolymers that can assemble into core-shell micelles in aqueous media have potential application as drug carriers for controlled-release. In this article an amphiphilic triblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(lactic acid)-block-poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PEG-b-PLA-b-PHEMA) was synthesized by ring-opening reaction and atom transfer radical polymerization. The polymers were characterized by H-1 NMR, FT-IR and gel permeation chromatography. In aqueous solution, PEG-b-PLA-b-PHEMA can self-assemble into micelles. Characterized by DLS and TEM, micelles are found to be spherical with uniform size. Large numbers of hydroxyl groups on the PHEMA chain offer reaction sites for subsequent functional modification, which make it a promising platforms for drug delivery systems.

Abstract:A linear amphiphilic multiblock copolymer (PNIPAm-PtBA-PNIPAm)m was successfully synthesized by a two-step reversible addition–fragmentation transfer (RAFT) polymerization in the presence of a cyclic trithiocarbonate as RAFT agent. The micelle behavior of (PNIPAm-PtBA-PNIPAm)m multiblock copolymer in aqueous solution was then investigated by means of normal TEM, cryo-TEM, static and dynamic light scattering. The morphology, size, and size distribution of (PNIPAm-PtBA-PNIPAm)m micelles were found to be dependent on the initial concentration of multiblock copolymer in THF. Spherical micelles, associated aggregates of spherical micelles, cage-like micelles, layered structures, and vesicular micelles were experimentally observed, which were in good agreement with the prediction of theory and simulations on linear amphiphilic multiblock copolymer in selective solvent. The (PNIPAm-PtBA-PNIPAm)m micelles also exhibit thermo-sensitive behavior in aqueous solution because of the PNIPAm blocks.

Abstract:We have found that not only block copolymers but also ionomers can self-assemble in a selective solvent to form surfactant-free nanoparticles. The self-assembly can be induced by chemical reaction, polymer-polymer complexation, and microphase inversion in addition to the temperature. A recently developed microwave method for the preparation of uniform surfactant-free polymeric nanoparticles is also reviewed. Our results have revealed that for a given dispersion, the particle surface area occupied per stabilizer (surfactant, polymer chains, and ionic groups) is close to a constant.

Abstract:Self-assembled nanostructures of amphiphilic block copolymers hold great promise for applications in nanomedicine. Blending polymers provides all effective way to produce multi functional drug delivery vesicles at micro- and nanoscales. Here we investigate the self-assembly of homopolymer and diblock copolymer blends in a selective solvent by using the self-consistent field method. It is fund that self-assembled nanostructures of different sizes and shapes (e.g., vesicles, circle- and line-like micelles, and their mixtures) can be obtained by varying the concentration and composition of the diblock copolymer. As the chain length or concentration of the homopolymer changes, morphological transitions may occur among the different nanostructures. Oil the basis of a number of simulations under various conditions, a phase diagram of aggregate morphologies is Constructed with respect to the mixture ratio and the homopolymer chain length. The theoretical method presented here Could be used to design novel nanomedicine carriers and to optimize their sizes and shapes for specific biomedical applications.
