Abstract:We demonstrate 32-channel dispersive optical phased arrays on a Si3N4-on-SOI integration platform. The phase difference is introduced by the arrayed waveguide. Beam steering in phased-array direction with an aliasing-free range of 22.4 degrees and free spectrum ranges of similar to 60 nm and similar to 6 nm is achieved. Meanwhile, the main lobe is deflected simultaneously by 19.67 degrees in the other direction by tuning the wavelength from 1500 nm to 1630 nm. Measurement results show that the dispersive optical phased array provides a compact, low-power and massively parallel solution for LiDAR applications.

Abstract:The realization of high-speed, low-power optical phased array (OPA) on thin-film lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) is considered an ideal solution for the next generation of solid-state beam steering. Most reported on-chip two-dimensional optical phased arrays suffer from issues such as large antenna spacing, high power consumption and complex wiring due to independent control of array elements. To address these challenges while fully utilizing the benefits of the LNOI platform, we propose a two-dimensional beam-scanning OPA based on lithium niobate (LN) waveguides. We design a multi-layer cascaded domain engineering structure inside the LN waveguide, combined with wavelength tuning, to enable two-dimensional beam scanning with single electrode controlling the OPA. Through simulation, we achieve a 42°×9.2° two-dimensional beam steering. Compared to existing on-chip integrated OPAs, this work offers significant advantages in increasing integration, simplifying control units and reducing power consumption.

Abstract:We demonstrate a 63-channel grating-lobe-free optical phased array, in which end-fire antennas were fabricated with a pitch of 775 nm to eliminate grating lobe. Phase mismatch was configured to suppress the optical crosstalk in the dense waveguides. Two-dimensional beam steering within 16°× 2.7° were presented by thermal phase shifting and wavelength tuning.

Abstract:Optical beam-steering devices are crucial components of complex optical control systems, which are widely used in diverse information-processing applications. Optical phased arrays (OPAs) as the promising beam-steering devices, have proven to alleviate current performance limitations in beam steering devices for ultra-small solid-state light detection and rangings (LiDARs) and free-space communication systems. The high electro-optic (EO) coefficient (γ_33=30.9 pm/V) of lithium niobate (LiNbO3, LN) can be a useful platform for phase tuning of the OPAs, which is conducive to enable phase shifting for non-mechanical beam steering with high-speed and low power consumption. The design, configurations and LN-OPA corresponding performances are discussed in this paper. The OPA consisting of different waveguides array is optimized with a side lobe suppression lower than -10 dB at the wavelength of 1.55 μm. Meanwhile, the OPA with grating emitters or adding silica cavity further improves the deflection quality of the beam. Then optical beam steering with an angle of 50° in one dimension controlled by the LN-OPA has been demonstrated. The proposed OPA on the LN platform in this work might hold significances for advanced LiDAR schemes based on EO tuning.

Abstract:Optical phased arrays (OPAs) with high speed, low power consumption, and low insertion loss are appealing for many applications, such as light detection and ranging, free-space communication, image projection, and imaging. These OPAs can be achieved by fully leveraging the high electro-optic modulation speed, low driving voltage, and low optical loss of integrated lithium niobate (LN) photonics. Here we present an integrated LN OPA operating in the near-infrared regime, demonstrating a 24 * 8° two-dimensional beam steering, a far-field beam spot with full-width at half-maximum of 2 * 0.6°, and a side lobe suppression level of 10 dB. Additionally, our OPA's phase modulator features a half wave voltage of 6 V. Our OPA opens the door of high speed, low power-consumption, and low loss integrated LN OPAs for various applications.

Abstract:An on-chip optical phased array(OPA)is considered as a promising solution for next generation solid-state beam steering.However,most of the reported OPAs suffer from low operating bandwidths,making them limited in many applications.We propose and demonstrate a high-speed 2D scanning OPA based on thin-film lithium niobate phase modulators with traveling-wave electrodes.The measured modulation bandwidth is up to 2.5 GHz.Moreover,an aperiodic array combined with a slab grating antenna is also used to suppress the grating lobes of far-field beams,which enables a large field of view(FOV)as well as small beam width.A 16-channel OPA dem-onstrates an FOV of 50°× 8.6° and a beam width of 0.73°× 2.8° in the phase tuning direction and the wavelength scanning direction,respectively.

Abstract:A waveguide-based multi-beam steering device is proposed for light detection and ranging (LIDAR). The device integrates binary gratings with an optical phased array (OPA), thus enabling a single-chip LIDAR system. The device can provide an N×M beam array that covers a wide angular range while phase shifters help realize steering over a narrow angle range between the beams. The antenna structure for 1D beam splitting is realized by combining the design of a grating coupler and a beam splitter grating, and a uniform beam splitting is achieved along the other dimension using non-uniformly distributed antennas. To illustrate the design, an OPA with an 11×11 beam array is designed at a wavelength of 905 nm. The OPA achieves a wide total field of view (FOV) of 68.8° × 77° with a narrow beam-array-steering angle of 6.5°, enabling a wide-FOV 3D sensing with a high frame rate.

Abstract:A high-resolution 64-channel arrayed-waveguide-grating-assisted silicon-nitride integrated optical phase array is demonstrated for 2-D beam steering. A field of view of 5° ×25° with 0.3° vertical resolution is achieved over a wavelength range of 100 nm with a single optical input. Higher vertical resolution can be attained by utilizing all the inputs of the OPA.

Abstract:We demonstrate dispersive optical phased arrays based on the Si3N4-on-Si platform. Two-dimensional beam steering across a 45.6 °× 10 °FOV with a beam width of 1.45 °× 0.032 °is achieved by wavelength tuning alone. Besides, FMCW ranging operation at a target distance of 10 m are experimentally performed.

Abstract:We present a two-dimensional (2D) optical phased array (OPA) with 8 x 8 elements in which light is electro-optically controlled by silicon phase modulators. The randomly distributed initial phases are calibrated through an interference technique to achieve a beam divergence of 0.92 degrees x 0.32 degrees and a scanning range of 8.9 degrees x 2.2 degrees. A bandwidth of 324 MHz and beam steering at a point-to-point speed of 20 MHz was realized on the fabricated chip. Systematic analysis revealed that the 2D electro-optical OPA is promising and feasible for many applications ranging from optical communication to light detection and ranging (LiDAR).

Abstract:Free-space beam steering plays an important role in ultrafast switching and scanning applications. Optical phased array (OPA) is commonly used for this function. Here we propose an alternative method to realize two-dimensional large-angle beam steering for single-wavelength light on Si platform. The steerer consists of an electrically controlled 1×N cascaded add-drop ring resonator and N off-chip emitters. Each output of the resonator connects with one emitter to emit light to free space at a certain direction. Single-wavelength light coupled in the input bus waveguide of the cascaded ring resonator can be switched among these N outputs by means of tuning the refractive index of the cascaded rings electrically and then be emitted to different directions in far field, which behaves as beam steering apparently. The steering can be one- or two-dimension, depending on the arrangement of these N off-chip emitters on the chip. Moreover, the proposed steerer can be combined with the conventional OPA for more precisely beam steering. A 1×9 cascaded ring resonator was fabricated on hydrogen amorphous silicon platform for proof of concept demonstration.

Abstract:A polarization-independent nonmechanical laser beam steering scheme is proposed to realize continuous two-dimensional (2D) scanning with high efficiency, where the core components are two polarization-dependent devices, which are called liquid crystal optical phased arrays (LC-OPAs). These two one-dimensional (1D) devices are orthogonally cascaded to work on the state of azimuthal and elevation steering, respectively. Properties of polarization independence as well as 2D beam steering are mathematically and experimentally verified with a good agreement. Based on the experimental setup, linearly polarized beams with different polarization angles are steered with high accuracy. The measured angular deviations are less than 5 mu rad, which is on the same order of the accuracy of the measurement system. This polarization-independent 2D laser beam steering scheme has potential application for nonmechanical laser communication, lidar, and other LC-based systems.

Abstract:An optical phased array (OPA) on a chip, as a novel non-mechanical beam steering technique, has attracted much attention in various applications. However, due to the challenges in fabrication and the limited transparency window of the material for visible wavelengths, current OPAs are mainly focuses on the infrared wavelengths. Despite the progress, the visible light OPAs remain the challenges to not only simultaneously work in blue, green and red light, but also implement beam steering in two dimensions for the single-wavelength. In this paper, an 8-channel broadband OPA is demonstrated, which enables two-dimensional beam steering in visible light. Along the longitudinal direction, the beam steering angle of 0.7° at 585 nm is achieved by tuning phase shifts. Along the transverse direction, the demonstrated OPA implements beam steering angle of 4.49° at 585 nm by tuning polarization degrees and 25.97° at 488–610 nm by tuning wavelengths. Therefore, the demonstrated OPA holds significant promise for commercial applications such as visual projection and free-space optical communications.

Abstract:This paper reports on large field-of-regard, high-efficiency, and large aperture active optical phased arrays (OPAs) for optical beam steering in LIDAR systems. The fabricated 5 mm-long silicon photonic OPA with a 1.3 μm waveguide pitch achieved adjacent waveguide crosstalk below -12dB. A relatively large and uniform emission aperture has been achieved with a low-contrast silicon nitride assisted grating (~20 dB/cm) whose emission profile can be further optimized using an apodized design. The fabricated silicon-photonic OPA demonstrated > 40° lateral beam steering with no sidelobes in a ± 33° field-of-regard and 3.3° longitudinal beam steering via wavelength tuning by 20 nm centered at 1550 nm. We have fully integrated the silicon photonic OPA device with electronic controls and successfully demonstrated 2-dimensional coherent optical beam steering of pre-planned far-field patterns. Future improvements include placement of a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) underneath the grating emitter in order to achieve nearly a factor of two improvement in emission efficiency.

Abstract:We demonstrate an optical beam steering setup based on a liquid crystal-optical phased array (LC-OPA) with high angular resolution and low beam divergence, due to the use of double-grating configuration to enhance the corresponding angular resolution of LC-OPA. The introduction of two nonparallel blazed gratings with a special included angle can achieve multiple diffractions for the incident light, leading to the realization of angular compression. Numerical simulation results show the angular compression ratio can be optimized by selecting the appropriate grating constant and the included angle of double-grating. Experimental results verify that the steered angle of the incident light can be compressed so that the angular resolution of the steered beam can correspondingly be improved more than six times. In addition, when the beam is multiply diffracted within the double-grating configuration, the divergence angle becomes smaller as the beam size is enlarged. Therefore, both the microradian steering resolution and the narrow beam divergence can be simultaneously obtained with our proposed setup. The efficiency of the steering where the beam diffracted four times within the double-grating configuration is 80%.

Abstract:In this work, we present a multi-layer optical phased array (OPA) designed for dual-axis beam steering on a silicon (Si) platform, utilizing only wavelength tuning. Our design eliminates the need for grating couplers, commonly required for dual-axis beam steering, thereby reducing energy losses due to substrate leakage. It also features the unique capability of achieving a positive or negative phase slope profile. This three-dimensional architecture enhances output efficiency by emitting light from the device edge, providing greater flexibility and improved performance in beam steering. This approach opens up new possibilities for on-chip photonic systems, enabling faster, more accurate, and broader beam steering range.
