Abstract:A gas sensing method based on quartz-tuning-fork enhanced photothermal spectroscopy (QEPTS) is reported in this paper. Unlike usually used thermally sensitive elements, a sharply resonant quartz-tuning-fork with the capability of enhanced mechanical resonance was used to amplify the photothermal signal level. Acetylene (C2H2) detection was used to verify the QEPTS sensor performance. The measured results indicate a minimum detection limit (MDL) of 718 ppb and a normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient (NNEA) of 7.63 × 10-9 cm-1W/√Hz. This performance demonstrates that QEPTS can be an ultra-high sensitive technique for gas detection and shows superiority when compared to usually used methods of tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) and quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS). Furthermore, when compared to an optical detector, especially a costly mercury cadmium telluride (MCT) detector with cryogenic cooling used in TDLAS, a quartz-tuning-fork is much cheap and tiny. Besides, compared to the QEPAS technique, QEPTS is a non-contact measurement technique and therefore can be used for standoff and remote trace gas detection.

Abstract:A trace gas detection technique of quartz-enhanced photoacoustic-photothermal spectroscopy (QEPA-PTS) is demonstrated. Different from quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) or quartz-enhanced photothermal spectroscopy (QEPTS), which detected only one single kind of signal, QEPA-PTS was realized by adding the photoacoustic and photothermal signals generated from two quartz tuning forks (QTFs), respectively. Water vapor (H2O) with a volume concentration of 1.01% was selected as the analyte gas to investigate the QEPA-PTS sensor performance. Compared to QEPAS and QEPTS, an enhanced signal level was achieved for this QEPA-PTS system. Further improvement of such a technique was proposed.

Abstract:A multi-quartz-enhanced photothermal spectroscopy (M-QEPTS) based trace gas detection method is reported for the first time. Different from traditional QEPTS sensor employing a single quartz tuning fork (QTF) as a photothermal detector, two QTFs were used in M-QEPTS to increase the signal amplitude by adding the generated piezoelectric signals. The coating film of the QTFs was removed in order to improve the laser absorption and transmission. Acetylene (C2H2) was chosen as the target analyte. Wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) and 2nd harmonic detection were utilized for the concentration detection. Limit of detection (LoD) of 0.97 ppm was achieved with a 1 second integration time for the M-QEPTS sensor, which realized a 1.51 times signal enhancement compared to a traditional QEPTS sensor employing a single QTF. By using an Allan deviation analysis approach, LoD of 0.19 ppm for an optimum integration time of 200 s was obtained.

Abstract:For this invited manuscript, an in-plane single-quartz-enhanced dual spectroscopy (IP-SQEDS)-based trace gas sensor was demonstrated for the first time. A single quartz tuning fork (QTF) was employed to combine in-plane quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (IP-QEPAS) with light-induced thermoelastic spectroscopy (LITES) techniques. Water vapor (H2O) was chosen as the target gas. Compared to traditional QEPAS, IP-SQEDS not only allowed for simple structures, but also obtained nearly three times signal amplitude enhancement.

Abstract:This invited review paper summarizes and discusses developments of QTF based state-of-the-art quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) and quartz-enhanced photothermal spectroscopy (QEPTS) gas sensing techniques over the past 3 years. Due to the merits of a high quality factor, a narrow resonance frequency band, a low cost, a small volume, and immunity to the laser wavelength, a QTF is widely used as a sensitive detector in sensing photoacoustic spectroscopy and photothermal spectroscopy based gas. The review also presents prospects in the development of QEPAS and QEPTS based gas sensing techniques.

Abstract:Gas sensors are important for multiple application scenarios, such as chemical substance detection and environmental pollution monitoring. The developments of quartz tuning fork (QTF) based quartz-enhanced photoacoustic and photothermal spectroscopy (QEPAS/QEPTS) in our research group was reported. With respect to QEPAS, a novel QTF-embedded off-beam QEPAS (E-OB-QEPAS) spectrophone configuration was used to improve sensitivity and the strength of acoustic coupling, and decrease the difficulty in assembly process and alignment process. Based on E-OB-QEPAS spectrophone, a sensitive methane sensor system and a double-gas methane/acetylene sensor system were developed. With respect to QEPTS, an all-fiber QEPTS configuration was used to solve the problems of huge size, optical light path alignment and integration process in free-space QEPTS. Then, a wavelength-locked QEPTS-based methane sensor system was proposed by utilizing a fiber-coupled sensing probe for long-distance in-situ gas sensing. At last, a double spot-ring Herriott-cell was used to realize a wide detection range and high detection sensitivity simultaneously in QEPTS-based gas sensor system.

Abstract:Trace-gas sensors have a wide range of potential applications such as environmental monitoring, climate research, agriculture, workplace safety, medical diagnostics, and industrial process control. A recently introduced technique called quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) is described. QEPAS use a quartz tuning fork as an acoustic transducer for a photoacoustic signal induced in an absorbing gas by modulated optical radiation. Advantages of the QEPAS compared to conventional photoacoustic spectroscopy include immunity to environmental acoustic noise and ultra-small sample volume. Trace gases of \(\hbox {CH}_{4}, \hbox {H}_{2}\hbox {O}\), and \(\hbox {NO}_{2}\) were monitored with a novel off-beam QEPAS approach and are described in detail.

Abstract:A sensitive trace gas sensor platform based on quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) is reported. A 1.395 μm continuous wave (CW), distributed feedback pigtailed diode laser was used as the excitation source and H2O was selected as the target analyte. Two kinds of quartz tuning forks (QTFs) with a resonant frequency (f0) of 30.72 kHz and 38 kHz were employed for the first time as an acoustic wave transducer, respectively for QEPAS instead of a standard QTF with a f0 of 32.768 kHz. The QEPAS sensor performance using the three different QTFs was experimentally investigated and theoretically analyzed. A minimum detection limit of 5.9 ppmv and 4.3 ppmv was achieved for f0 of 32.768 kHz and 30.72 kHz, respectively.

Abstract:This paper describes a micro-quartz crystal tuning fork (M-QCTF) hermetically sealed in a vacuum environment for the development of low-cost, high-sensitivity photothermal detectors. Compared with conventional QCTF-based photothermal detectors exposed to air, the M-QCTF detector with the approximate stable characteristic resonance frequency (∼32763 Hz) has a small size and high quality factor of 19840. Utilizing the M-QCTF detector and direct absorption spectroscopy (DAS) technology, a gas detection system has been successfully implemented. NO 2 was selected as the target gas for evaluating the performance of the M-QCTF based gas sensor. The results indicate a strong linear relationship between the normalized absorbance amplitude of the M-QCTF and the gas concentration, achieving an optimal measurement precision of 117 ppb with an integration time of 230 s. Furthermore, the vacuum packaging structure of the M-QCTF provides advantages such as easy system integration, low cost, and robust anti-interference capability.

Abstract:Trace gas detection technology is an important approach widely used in the field of air pollution monitoring, industrial production and national security. Quartz enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS), a highlighted focus of trace gas detection technology, has the potential of toxic and harmful gas detection due to its features of strong anti-interference, small scale and high sensibility. This paper briefly summarizes the fundamentals of QEPAS technology, presents the main performance of QEPAS technology developed in the recent years, and finally discusses the prospects of QEPAS technology according to the current requirement.

Abstract:A multi-quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (M-QEPAS) sensor system for trace gas detection is reported. Instead of a single quartz tuning fork (QTF) as used in QEPAS technique, a dual QTF sensor platform was adopted in M-QEPAS to increase the signal strength by the addition of the detected QEPAS signals. Water vapor was selected as the target analyte. M-QEPAS realized a 1.7 times signal enhancement as compared to the QEPAS method for the same operating conditions. A minimum detection limit of 23.9 ppmv was achieved for the M-QEPAS sensor, with a calculated normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient of 5.95 × 10−8 cm−1W/√Hz. The M-QEPAS sensor performance can be further improved when more QTFs are employed or an acoustic micro-resonator architecture is used.
Trace Gas Detection System Based on All-Optical Quartz-Enhanced Photoacoustic Spectroscopy

Abstract:An all-optical quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy system (QEPAS) with quadrature point stabilization for trace gas detection was reported. The extrinsic interferometry-based optical fiber Fabry–Perot sensor with quadrature point self-stabilization for detection of quartz prong vibration was used to replace the conventional one. The optimal coefficient of the modulation depth was ∼2.2 theoretically and experimentally, corresponding to the modulation depth of ∼0.1795 cm −1 at an acetylene (C 2 H 2 ) absorption line of 6534.36 cm −1 . Furthermore, the enhancement of QEPAS signal was obtained by using different microresonators. The minimum detectable limit of ∼580 parts per billion by volume (ppbv) was obtained. A normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient for C 2 H 2 of 2.95 × 10 −7 cm −1 ·W·Hz –1/2 was obtained. The detection sensitivity was enhanced by a factor of ∼2.1 in comparison to the conventional QEPAS system. The linear correlation coefficient of the QEPAS signal response to the C 2 H 2 concentration was 0.998 within the range from 10 parts per million by volume (ppmv) to 500 ppmv. Finally, the long-term stability of the QEPAS system was evaluated using Allan deviation analysis, and the ultimate detection limit of ∼130 ppbv was reached for an optimum averaging time of ∼108 s at atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature.

Abstract:Quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) is an improvement of the conventional microphone-based photoacoustic spectroscopy. In the QEPAS technique, a commercially available millimeter-sized piezoelectric element quartz tuning fork (QTF) is used as an acoustic wave transducer. With the merits of high sensitivity and selectivity, low cost, compactness, and a large dynamic range, QEPAS sensors have been applied widely in gas detection. In this review, recent developments in state-of-the-art QEPAS-based trace gas sensing technique over the past five years are summarized and discussed. The prospect of QEPAS-based gas sensing is also presented.

Abstract:Laser spectroscopy based techniques have the advantages of high sensitivities, high selectivities, non-invasiveness and in situ, real-time observations. They are widely used in numerous fields, such as environmental monitoring, life science, medical diagnostics, manned space flight, and planetary exploration. Owing to the merits of low cost, compact volume and strong environment adaptability, quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) based sensing is an important laser spectroscopy-based method of detecting the trace gas, which was invented in 2002. Detection sensitivity is a key parameter for gas sensors because it determines their real applications. In this paper, focusing on the detection sensitivity, the common methods for QEPAS are summarized. High power laser including amplified diode laser by erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), and quantum cascade laser are used to improve the excitation intensity of acoustic wave. The absorption line of gas molecules located at the fundamental bands of mid-infrared region is adopted to increase the laser absorption strength. Micro-resonator is employed to enhance the generated acoustic pressure by forming a standing wave cavity. Quartz tuning forks (QTFs) with low resonant frequency are used to increase the accumulation time of acoustic energy in itself. Multi-pass strategy is utilized to amplify the action length between laser beam and target gas in the prongs of QTF. The advantages and disadvantages of the above methods are discussed respectively. For the issues in real applications, the all-fiber strucure in near-infared region and mid-infrared region and miniaturization using three-dimensional(3D) printing technique for QEPAS sensor are summarized. A QEPAS technique based multi-gas sensor is used to quantify the concentration of carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), and hydrogen chloride (HCl) for post-fire cleanup aboard spacecraft, which is taken for example for the real application.Finally, the methods of further improving the sensitivity of QEPAS sensor are proposed.

Abstract:A gas sensing method based on quartz-enhanced photothermal spectroscopy (QEPTS) demodulated by quartz tuning fork (QTF) sensing acoustic wave is reported for the first time. Different from traditional QEPTS, the method proposed in this paper utilizes the second QTF to sense acoustic wave produced by the first QTF owing to the vibration resulted from photo-thermo-elastic effect. This indirect demodulation by acoustic wave sensing can avoid QTF being irradiated by laser beam and therefore get less noise and realize better detection sensitivity. Four different sensing configurations are designed and verified. Acetylene (C2H2) with a volume concentration of 1.95 % is selected as the target gas. A model of sound field produced by the first QTF vibrating is established by finite element method to explain the variation trend of signal and noise in the second QTF. The measured results indicate that this technique had an enhanced signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 1.36 times when compared to the traditional QEPTS. Further improvement methods for such technique is proposed.

Abstract:A gas sensor based on off-beam quartz enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy was developed and optimized. Specifically, the length and diameter of the microresonator tube were optimized, and the outer tube shape is modified for enhancing the trace gas detection sensitivity. The impact of the distance between the quartz tuning fork and an acoustic microresonator on the sensor performance was experimentally investigated. The sensor performance was evaluated by determining the detection sensitivity to H2O vapor in ambient air at normal atmospheric pressure. Abstract:Combining the merits of non-contact measurement and high sensitivity, the quartz-enhanced photothermal spectroscopy (QEPTS) technique is suitable for measuring acid gases such as hydrogen chloride (HCl). In this invited paper, we report, for the first time, on an ultra-highly sensitive HCl sensor based on the QEPTS technique. A continuous wave, distributed feedback (CW-DFB) fiber-coupled diode laser with emission wavelength of 1.74 μm was used as the excitation source. A certified mixture of 500 ppm HCl:N2 was adapted as the analyte. Wavelength modulation spectroscopy was used to simplify the data processing. The wavelength modulation depth was optimized. The relationships between the second harmonic (2f) amplitude of HCl-QEPTS signal and the laser power as well as HCl concentration were investigated. An Allan variance analysis was performed to prove that this sensor had good stability and high sensitivity. The proposed HCl-QEPTS sensor can achieve a minimum detection limit (MDL) of ~17 parts per billion (ppb) with an integration time of 130 s. Further improvement of such an HCl-QEPTS sensor performance was proposed.
