Abstract:In this paper, some refinements of norm equalities and inequalities of combination of two orthogonal projections are established. We use certain norm inequalities for positive contraction operator to establish norm inequalities for combination of orthogonal projections on a Hilbert space. Furthermore, we give necessary and sufficient conditions under which the norm of the above combination of orthogonal pro jections attains its optimal value.

Abstract:In this paper, we present various inequalities regarding the linear combinations of orthogonal projections. These results aim to generalize and refine well-known inequalities, such as those due to Buzano and Ostrowski. Additionally, we investigate a specific case of these linear combinations and introduce new refinements of the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality. Furthermore, we establish some findings related to the covariance and variance of bounded linear operators. Moreover, as applications of some of our results, we establish several inequalities involving the product of three operators, one of which is a linear combination of an orthogonal projection and the identity operator. Finally, we introduce a new positive operator construction in terms of an orthogonal projection and the identity operator, and we derive some norms and numerical radius inequalities involving it.

Abstract:In this paper we come up with a dual version of the Furstenberg problem and obtain partial results via $L^p$ estimates of orthogonal projections. Examples are also discussed. Moreover, compared with general sets, we find that special structure like Cartesian product has better $L^p$-behavior. This leads to improvement on some discretized sum-product estimates.

Abstract:A term called the quasi-projection pair $(P,Q)$ was introduced recently by the authors, where $P$ is a projection and $Q$ is an idempotent on a Hilbert $C^*$-module $H$ satisfying $Q^*=(2P-I)Q(2P-I)$, in which $Q^*$ is the adjoint operator of the idempotent $Q$ and $I$ is the identity operator on $H$. Some fundamental issues on quasi-projection pairs, such as the block matrix representations for quasi-projection pairs and the $C^*$-morphisms associated with quasi-projection pairs, are worthwhile to be investigated. This paper aims to make some preparations. One object called the semi-harmonious quasi-projection pair is introduced in the general setting of the adjointable operators on Hilbert $C^*$-modules. Some related operator theories on the common similarity of operators and a norm equation associated with the Friedrichs angle are dealt with.

Abstract:If $\H$ is a Hilbert space, $A$ is a positive bounded linear operator on $\cH$ and $\cS$ is a closed subspace of $\cH$, the relative position between $\cS$ and $A^{-1}(\cS \orto)$ establishes a notion of compatibility. We show that the compatibility of $(A,\cS)$ is equivalent to the existence of a convenient orthogonal projection in the operator range $R(A^{1/2})$ with its canonical Hilbertian structure.

Abstract:We introduce the concept of n-OU and n-OO matrix sets, a collection of n mutually-orthogonal unitary and real orthogonal matrices under Hilbert-Schmidt inner product. We give a detailed characterization of order-three n-OO matrix sets under orthogonal equivalence. As an application in quantum information theory, we show that the minimum and maximum numbers of an unextendible maximally entangled bases within a real two-qutrit system are three and four, respectively. Further, we propose a new matrix decomposition approach, defining an n-OU (resp. n-OO) decomposition for a matrix as a linear combination of n matrices from an n-OU (resp. n-OO) matrix set. We show that any order-d matrix has a d-OU decomposition. As a contrast, we provide criteria for an order-three real matrix to possess an n-OO decomposition.

Abstract:We give an upper bound on the number of exceptional orthogonal projections of a small set of points in a plane over a prime order field, which makes progress toward a conjecture of Chen (2018). This theorem relies on a new upper bound on the number of incidences between an arbitrary set of lines and a set of points contained in a reasonably small pencil of lines. We also prove a new upper bound on the number of incidences between points and lines when both are Cartesian products in an appropriate sense.

Abstract:Orthogonal projections onto closed subspaces of $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ of the form $\varphi H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ for inner functions $\varphi$ on $\mathbb{D}^n$ are referred to as inner projections, where $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ denotes the Hardy space over the open unit polydisc $\mathbb{D}^n$. In this paper, we classify pairs of commuting inner projections. We also present two seemingly independent applications: the first is an answer to a question posed by R. G. Douglas, and the second is a complete classification of partially isometric truncated Toeplitz operators with inner symbols on the polydisc.

Abstract:Consider the $n!$ different unitary matrices that permute $n$ $d$-dimensional quantum systems. If $d\geq n$ then they are linearly independent. This paper discusses a sense in which they are approximately orthogonal (with respect to the Hilbert-Schmidt inner product) if $d\gg n^2$, or, in a different sense, if $d\gg n$. Previous work had shown pairwise approximate orthogonality of these matrices, but here we show a more collective statement, quantified in terms of the operator norm distance of the Gram matrix to the identity matrix. This simple point has several applications in quantum information and random matrix theory: (1) showing that random maximally entangled states resemble fully random states, (2) showing that Boson sampling output probabilities resemble those from Gaussian matrices, (3) improving the Eggeling-Werner scheme for multipartite data hiding, (4) proving that the product test of Harrow-Montanaro cannot be performed using LOCC without a large number of copies of the state to be tested, (5) proving that the purity of a quantum state also cannot be efficiently tested using LOCC, and (6, published separately) helping prove that poly-size random quantum circuits are poly-designs.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the superposition invariance of unitary operators and maximally entangled state respectively. Furthermore, we discuss the set of orthogonal maximally entangled states. We find that orthogonal basis of maximally entangled states can be divided into k subspaces. It is shown that some entanglement properties of superposed state in every subspace are invariant.

Abstract:We give an interpretation of the Hirota relations for the τ-functions of hierarchies of integrable equations in terms of intertwining operators. This gives the possibility of generalizing the relations to the case of finite-dimensional Lie algebras and quantized universal enveloping algebras. An example of Uq(sl2) is presented.

Abstract: Motivated by Barr{\'\i}a-Halmos's \cite[Question 19]{barria1982asymptotic} and Halmos's \cite[Problem 237]{Halmos1978A}, we explore projections in Toeplitz algebra on the Hardy space. We show that the product of two Toeplitz (Hankel) operators is a projection if and only if it is the projection onto one of the invariant subspaces of the shift (backward shift) operator. As a consequence one obtains new proofs of criterion for Toeplitz operators and Hankel operators to be partial isometries. Furthermore, we completely characterize when the self-commutator of a Toeplitz operator is a projection. This provides a class of nontrivial projections in Toeplitz algebra.
Indistinguishability of bipartite states by positive-partial-transpose operations in the many-copy scenario

Abstract:A bipartite subspace $S$ is called strongly positive-partial-transpose-unextendible (PPT-unextendible) if for every positive integer $k$, there is no PPT operator supporting on the orthogonal complement of $S^{\otimes k}$. We show that a subspace is strongly PPT-unextendible if it contains a PPT-definite operator (a positive semidefinite operator whose partial transpose is positive definite). Based on these, we are able to propose a simple criterion for verifying whether a set of bipartite orthogonal quantum states is indistinguishable by PPT operations in the many copy scenario. Utilizing this criterion, we further point out that any entangled pure state and its orthogonal complement cannot be distinguished by PPT operations in the many copy scenario. On the other hand, we investigate that the minimum dimension of strongly PPT-unextendible subspaces in an $m\otimes n$ system is $m+n-1$, which involves a generalization of the result that non-positive-partial-transpose (NPT) subspaces can be as large as any entangled subspace [N. Johnston, Phys. Rev. A 87: 064302 (2013)].

Dual forms of the orthogonality relations of some classical q-orthogonal polynomials

Abstract:In this paper, by introducing new matrix operations and using a specific inverse relation, we establish the dual forms of the orthogonality relations for some well-known discrete and continuous $q$-orthogonal polynomials from the Askey-scheme such as the little and big $q$-Jacobi, $q$-Racah, (generalized) $q$-Laguerre, as well as the Askey-Wilson polynomials. As one of the most interesting results, we show that the Askey-Wilson $q$-beta integral represented in terms of the VWP-balanced $\,_8\phi_7$ series is just a dual form of the orthogonality relation of the Askey-Wilson polynomials.

Abstract:We explore the uncertainty relation for unitary operators in a new way and find two uncertainty equalities for unitary operators, which are minimized by any pure states. Additionally, we derive two sets of uncertainty inequalities that unveil hierarchical structures within the realm of unitary operator uncertainty. Furthermore, we examine and compare our method for unitary uncertainty relations to other prevailing formulations. We provide explicit examples for better understanding and clarity. Results show that the hierarchical unitary uncertainty relations establish strong bounds. Moreover, we investigate the higher-dimensional limit of the unitary uncertainty equalities.
